We extend to the Class of 2014 our congratulations on their wonderful academic results. In 2014 the students received six OP 1’s, four OP 2’s, four OP 3’s, ten OP 4’s and ten OP 5’s, with 51% of the cohort achieving OP 1-10. These fine results reflect the aptitude and efforts of the girls themselves, the support from their families and the quality of the teaching they received.
We especially congratulate the following students on being awarded highly esteemed University Scholarships:
Sarah King and Rebecca Marshall both received University of Queensland Vice Chancellor’s Scholarships ($60,000 each over five years); and
Sarah Bryant received a Queensland University of Technology Science & Maths (STEM) Scholarship ($30,000).
Congratulations to Aislind Bell (Year 11) recipient of a QATSIF (Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Foundation) Scholarship.
Congratulations to Alex White and Taylor Whitewood, both Year 11, on winning the Premier’s Anzac Prize.
Alex and Taylor are each one of seventy students chosen, to participate from across the State in this year’s special Centenary Celebrations of Anzac Day. They will travel to Gallipoli and the Western Front in April as part of a two-week trip to mark this significant national occasion.

To Megan Cooper (Year 9) who was awarded two trophies at the Queensland Equestrian Eventing Awards for 2014. Megan won the Mark Meyers – Junior Rider, recognising her as the Queensland Junior Rider of the Year. Both Megan and her horse Kelecyn Bam Bam were also awarded with the title of Most Promising Horse and Rider Combination. We wish Megan continued success in 2015.

SCHOOL UNIFORM SUPPLIES On behalf of Wearco, supplier of Loreto’s College Uniforms, we offer our sincere apologies for the difficulties experienced by some families in completing their uniform purchases this year. The extraordinary and unprecedented demand due to the ‘double-intake’ caused unique supply and demand issues which Wearco tried to minimize. Regrettably, however, the service was less than we would like it to have been and for this we apologise unreservedly.

Parking around the College & Drop-Off / Collection of Students As we start the new school year, it is appropriate to remind parents and others of the need to act safely when driving around the College grounds and of the need to comply with parking restrictions that are in place. Brisbane City Council has advised that following on from the 2014 Parking Taskforce report, they will be working with schools to develop traffic management strategies with the aim of creating safer parking areas, implementing educational programs and conducting more parking enforcement. They are also looking at creating standardised, clearer signage for school drop off zones. In addition, BCC has advised that they will be rolling out a number of high-visibility traffic enforcement vehicles, which would be used for parking enforcement at schools experiencing traffic congestion, to improve compliance and safety. They advise that Council officers will be out in force with a very noticeable presence to encourage motorists to drive and park safely. BCC has listed 24 schools that will be targeted during Term 1, 2015 and Loreto College Coorparoo is on that list. As a result we can expect to see an increase in parking enforcement during that time. The College is fully supportive of the Council’s initiative and will continue to work closely with the Taskforce and the local Councillor, Ian McKenzie, to improve traffic and parking around the College with the aim of ensuring safety of students, staff and others. All members of our community are asked to assist in the safe movement of traffic and parking around the College by:
Complying with all parking restrictions including “No Standing” areas and 2 minute limits at drop off and pick up times;
Refraining from unsafe parking practices such as parking across intersections, double parking etc; and
Respecting the rights of residents in the area.
Clearly designated drop off/pick up areas currently exist on either side of the front driveway in Cavendish Road and behind the College in Lade Street. Your continued support of safe driving and parking around the College will be appreciated. Noel Williams, Business Manager

Administration Brisbane City Council - Lost Property Brisbane City Council’s Lost Property Office receive many school items that have been left on Council buses. Should any items be left behind we encourage the owner of the property to please contact Council on (07) 3403 8888. Lost Property can be claimed from our Lost Property Office located on Level 1, Brisbane Square, 266 George Street, Brisbane between the hours of 9.00am to 5.00pm Monday - Friday excluding Public Holidays.
Class, Individual and Sister Photos Class, individual, and sisters’ photos will be taken on Friday 6 February. A separate flyer/envelope has been sent home explaining the products available and payment methods. Each envelope has a unique code printed on it which is required for each student to place an order. If you wish to have a family photo taken, please collect a Sibling/Family Photo Envelope from Mrs Bongaarts at the College Office. Once completed you must ensure that each student returns her own envelope even if payment is made in the eldest child’s envelope. Envelopes are not to be placed inside other envelopes as they can often get missed. Please return these envelopes plus your individual photo order on the photo day Friday 6 February. Please do not return these to the College Office as it is not a collection point. Unfortunately, if envelopes are not brought on this day, orders will need to be made directly with the photographer (Advanced Life Photography 3216 8280) and a late fee will need to be paid with the order. Payments can be made with cash or by cheque. Please make cheques payable to Advancedlife. Complete bank name and cheque number on the Order Envelope. Write your name and address on the back of the cheque and allow 60 days for your cheque to be finalised. For the convenience of the school community Advancelife have now introduced ‘Online Ordering’. School photos can now be ordered and paid for using a secure online Web Portal. Please note: Photos can still be purchased using an envelope. To place your order visit www.advancedlife.com.au and enter the code—RNVLJWR1E. A full set of instructions can also be found printed on the envelopes supplied by advancedlife. All Online Orders should be placed on or before the day of photography. Please Note: Once orders are closed a LATE FEE will apply. All Online Orders placed through the Web Portal will be returned to school for collection.
Year 8 and Year 10 Vaccination Consent Forms All Year 8 students were given a consent form for Boostrix, Varicella (Chickenpox) and HPV Vaccinations on Wednesday 28 January. A free booster dose of adult / adolescent diphtheria-tetanus– pertussis (Whooping Cough) vaccine will be offered in the school based vaccination program for every Year 8 student. Year 8 will have their first dose of HPV and their Boostrix vaccinations on Tuesday 3 March at 9.00am, therefore it is imperative that students return the forms by 8.30am FRIDAY 6 February, otherwise they will miss the opportunity to have the vaccination. The Varicella dnd second HPV vaccinations will take place on Thursday 7 May at 1.30pm. The final HPV vaccination will be given on Monday 26 October. Please note that Year 8 students cannot have the 2nd or 3rd HPV vaccination unless the first one has been administered. Year 10 students were given a consent for Diphteria, Tetanus and Pertussis (Whooping Cough). It is very important these forms are completed and returned to the College Office by 8.30am FRIDAY 6 February. The Year 10 vaccination will be given on Tuesday 3 March and it is highly recommended that they receive this injection as a recent tetanus vaccination is a requirement to be able to attend the Year 10 Camp later this year. This is a free service provided by the Brisbane City Council. Parents are asked to sign and return these forms even if you do not wish your daughter to receive this vaccination. Curriculum and Year Level Reports Classroom Music Music Camp Tomorrow morning, 110 girls will leave school at lunchtime to go to Mapleton for the Annual Loreto/Villanova Music Camp. This year’s theme is “Dance Music” so we are looking forward to some particularly funky pieces, starting with Ray Charles’ “Shake A Tail Feather”. Come along to the Augustine Centre, Villanova College on Sunday at 4 pm to hear the music student’s first concert for the year as they perform some of the music they will learn this weekend. For students attending the camp, don’t forget to: carefully check your “What to Bring” letters so that you remember everything you need; come to school in respectable and appropriate free clothes on Friday; on arrival, drop your bags and instrument into room 711 (MWC); bring your Friday lunch in a disposable container so that you do not need to carry an empty lunchbox around all

weekend; and come to the MWC Mezzanine at the very start of lunch for roll marking and departure. Attending Music Ensemble Captains, you need to meet at Villanova College Sixth Avenue entrance at 6:30 am so that we can go up to the campsite early for our leadership activities. Private Tuition and Ensemble Rehearsals All lessons and ensemble rehearsals begin next week on Monday 2 February with the exception of Percussion Ensemble One and Symphony Orchestra. If you have signed up for Private Tuition, please check the Music Lesson Noticeboard outside the practice rooms as timetables for all tutors should be up by then. You tutor may also contact you directly to organise your first lesson. In a change from previous years, music lessons will now be held at set weekly times as much as possible. This change is the result of the academic timetable moving to a 7 day rotation and it is our intention that maintaining constant lesson times will stop students consistently missing any one academic class. Please take careful note of the Rehearsal Schedule that is published with this newsletter as some rehearsals have changed days since the draft was published late last year. eg: Sorelle will now be Tuesday morning at 7:15 am and Percussion Ensemble Two will now be on Wednesday mornings instead of Friday mornings! Ben Langford - Director of Music Music Tour In December, Mr Langford emailed all parents of students in Big Band and Chorale to offer them the chance to attend a fantastic Music Tour to Mt Gambier for the Generations in Jazz Big Band Awards. Imagine a festival the size of QCMF but focused completely on Big Bands and Vocal Jazz and this will give you some idea of what GiJ is like. Then add in daily concerts by James Morrison, Emma Pask, True North, Gordon Goodwin and the Big Phat Band, the GiJ Street Band, Vocal and Instrumental Scholarship Soloists, and you will realise just how fantastic this event is! Please be aware that there is absolutely no pressure on any parent or student to commit to this tour. However, planning for this opportunity cannot progress any further until parents respond to the email with an Expression of Interest, as without approximate numbers we are unable to judge the viability of this tour. If your daughter is in Big Band or Chorale and you did not receive an email at the end of last year, please contact the Music Office urgently so that we can give you the required information.
Year 12 Parent Information Night A Year 12 Parent Information Night will be held on Monday 2nd February commencing at 7.00pm in the Mary Ward Centre. On the night we will address many of the concerns you may have about study, socialising, commitment as members of the senior school, part-time work, career preparation and tertiary entrance. Honour Pockets If your daughter has one of the new style blazers and received an honour pocket at the end of last year I am now collecting blazers to have the embroidery done. All blazers need to be handed into the service are by the end of February so that they can be sent away to Ranier in Sydney who do the embroidery. Blazers need to be dry cleaned, have owners name clearly marked on them and the letter stating what embroidery is to be done attached . A table of costs is included in the newsletter. Payment details are still being finalised with Ranier and you will be notified as soon as this is available as to the payment options. Ranier will only accept blazers for embroidery twice a year in terms 1 & 4 so if your blazer is not handed in on time it will not be sent away till term 4. Any queries please contact me at school. Sports Department Loreto Sport for 2015 At the end of 2014 an email was sent to all parents regarding the changes to CaSSSA sport for 2015. Please see the following details for sport for Trimester 1. Loreto Tennis Championships All tennis players who would like to compete in the Tennis Competition this year and trialled at the end of 2014, and all new Year 8, 9, 10 ,11 and 12 students who would like to trial must compete in the Loreto Tennis Championships. Trophies will be awarded in each Age group. This event will be conducted at Brisbane Girls Grammar School Tennis Courts, 70 Gregory Terrace, SPRING HILL. The dates are as follows: Saturday 7 February 7.30am to 10.30am – Year 7 11.00am to 2.00pm – Year 8 2.00pm to 5.00pm – Year 9 Sunday 8 February 7.30am to 11.00pm – Year 10 12.00pm to 5.00pm – Year 11 and 12 All players need to sign up on Google Doc when they receive notification by Wednesday 4 February. When all girls have signed up a draw will be compiled. Trophies will be awarded for winners in each category, as well as awards for runners up. All players go into the draw to win a “Lucky Player Prize”. Hope to see lots of Loreto Tennis players there. Please bring: Tennis Racquet, PE Uniform, Cap, Sunscreen, Snacks and Water. All students will need to wear their PE uniform and bring hat, water bottle, sunscreen, sports shoes and a racquet. Please provide a healthy morning/afternoon tea to share as this is normally a practice for all our home games. Training for all teams begins on 9 February 2015. The Saturday fixtures run 14 February - 9 May. The tennis skirts are now available from the uniform shop. All players will be required to purchase the skirt prior to the competition starting. Girls must wear sports uniform to school and can change into house colours on arrival at school. Girls will need to change back into sports uniform before going home. All students will travel by bus to and from Chandler and should arrive at school no later than 8.25am. All buses will return to Loreto for a usual 3.20pm finish to the day. This is the first Interhouse Carnival of the year and all students are expected to attend and encouraged to compete and contribute to the House spirit on the day. This is a compulsory school day. Any student who cannot swim in events due to medical reasons should see Mrs Stevens in the Sports office prior to the carnival day to be allocated a job at the carnival. All competitors are to swim in one-piece togs, preferably Loreto togs. Each girl is encouraged to bring her own lunch and a drink as there will only be limited access to the canteen.
