Volume 33- 28 October, 2014 Dear Parents and Students Last Tuesday we welcomed to the College our new Year 8’s for next year and today we welcomed our new Year 7’s. It is lovely to have had this opportunity to introduce them and their parents to Loreto, albeit briefly, ahead of their commencement in January.
As I explained to the Year 11’s recently, 2015 will be a year of significant change for us in so many ways. In 2015, we will have one third of the students new to the College and we will have approximately twelve new staff, including two new Deputies. We also have a number of current staff who have been appointed to new positions. Additionally, we will be introducing a ‘7 Day’ cyclic timetable to allow the students in Year 9 and 10 the opportunity to study a greater number of electives. With all these changes we are mindful of the need to ensure that we remain true to the core values and essence of who and what we are as a Mary Ward School, and what it is that makes this Loreto Community such an extraordinary place of which to be a part. As we prepare for these changes and begin to welcome new members, we also take the time to thank and farewell those who will be leaving us.
RETIREMENTS Apart from our senior students whose time of leaving is fast approaching, this year we have five long-standing members of staff who will be retiring. Between them they have given an amazing 142 years of generous and loyal service. We thank them individually and collectively for their leadership and service and the significant difference for good they have each made to the lives of thousands of students. When speaking with Past Pupils I am frequently asked about these teachers who are remembered by generations of ‘students’ with genuine respect, appreciation and great warmth and affection.
Loreto thanks Mr Bryan Deveson, Mr Patrick Elsworthy, Dr Raimund Irmer, Mr William Kenny and Mrs Kerry Williams. Our hearts are filled with gratitude for the time you have each given in such loving and generous service. Your legacies will live on in the hearts and minds you have transformed and you will be remembered always with admiration and deep affection.
As a community we wish you every blessing for the future. May the future by joyful and gentle.

The Muggeridge family were certainly popping the bubbly last week, when they were drawn as the lucky winners of the Loreto 2015 tuition fee raffle. With two girls at the College and another enrolled to start Year 7 in 2016, mum and dad Daniel and Jeanita were thrilled to hear they had won! Jeanita, Sophie, Lauren and Ella eagerly excepted the congratulatory letter from the College Business Manager, Noel Williams. Whilst admiring our new building ‘Cruci’, Jeanita, a past pupil herself, expressed her admiration for the College in providing such a wonderful initiative. All proceeds from the raffle have been directed to stage one of the capital campaign, delivering exciting and innovative teaching spaces to the entire College. Art Department Year 12’s second Body of Work was completed in Term Three. They were required to develop their own focus in response to the concept ‘The human Condition- The Extrinsic’. The students are to be commended on the diversity of ideas investigated and their depth of thought in the exploration of imagery and their sensitivity in selecting appropriate media and techniques to communicate their ideas. Their ability to be flexible in their thinking, to be risk takers and to imagine “other” possibilities will be valued qualities in whatever path they choose. Career News CRE8 TAFE Queensland Brisbane’s annual event – Cre8 Brisbane 2014 – is being held on Thursday 6 November 2014 at our Southbank campus. This is a great opportunity for students interested in these fields to hear from ‘real people’ about the ins and outs of a career in Photography, Music and Graphic Design. German News On Thursday 16 October, the German students from Years 9 to 12 visited the RNA Showgrounds to participate in the “Oktoberfest for Teens”. It was organised by the Modern Language Teachers Association and attended by hundreds of primary and secondary students of German from Southeast Queensland. Authentic German food and drink (non-alcoholic!) were available for students to try and buy. The dancing, singing and music added to the festive nature of the day. Frau Stewart tried on a typical German dress, “Dirndl”, and fitted in well with the many girls and teachers who also donned national costume for the occasion. The boys were even braver in wearing “Lederhosen”. Many students bought funny hats and suspenders and joined in the fun of games like the “Gummibear” races and “Limo” (lemonade) drinking competition. It was a most enjoyable language experience for our German students. The day ended with each of them being given their own gingerbread heart from the MLTAQ as a reminder of the joy of language learning.
Parent Information Evening A reminder that the first parent information evening about the 2015 German Exchange Program will be held in Room 407 (Casket Building) this Tuesday, 28 October, at 7pm. Details about hosting a German student and then the return trip to Germany will be discussed. Peita Ward - German Exchange Coordinator
Drama News Next Monday and Tuesday nights, Year 10 Drama students present a public performance of their Collage Dramas in The Mary Ward Centre at 7pm each night. These performances each have a duration of 13 – 15 mins and have been written, directed and rehearsed by the students. This year topics such as Teenagers, Discover and Obsession will entertain an always enthusiastic audience of friends and family. Admission is by a gold coin and it promises to be a most entertaining evening. On Monday and Tuesday afternoons, students in that night’s show will remain at school rehearsing and will be provided with a pizza dinner. Also, on Sunday each group will spend 90 minutes rehearsing with a teacher, using full costume and lights. A letter has been sent home to parents outlining what is required of students in relation to the Collage Dramas. Come along and enjoy the shows!

Music News Music Night Concert – our annual end-of-year celebration of Loreto musical talent is Friday 31 October from 6pm to 9pm (that’s this week!) in the Mary Ward Centre. It is compulsory for all students in performing ensembles to attend this concert. Arrival times and venues are listed at the back of this newsletter, as are uniform requirements and supper information. As this is a formal concert, we would ask that parents assist with instilling in their daughters appropriate concert etiquette by reminding them of the following courtesies:
It is expected that audience members arrive in time for the start of the concert and stay until the end – students in the last performing group are the audience for those who are performing first, so it is only fair that those who perform early stay and watch the later performances;
A high standard of behaviour is expected. Quiet talking between performances is completely acceptable. BUT talking during performances is quite rude;
No mobile phones / tablets should be used during the concert at all – students in the audience are still participants in the concert;
Students should be either in the audience and listening to the performances, in their warm-up room warming up with their conductor, or backstage / onstage performing. No students should be waiting in the Mezzanine, outside the hall, or at the back of the hall at any time. This includes non-performing students who have come along to be audience members – please sit in the audience and enjoy the concert as that is what you came to do!
Ensemble Auditions – Thank you to all the staff and students who worked all day on Sunday attending auditions to prepare for our 2015 ensembles. Results of these auditions will be published soon (posted to incoming Year 6 & 7 students, on the Music Noticeboard for current students). Soon after this publication we will be able to send out Music Camp 2015 invites as well! If for any reason you intend to play/sing in a music ensemble next year and DID NOT AUDITION, then you should contact Mr Langford in the Music Office urgently! Mega-Raffle – All music students should now have sold and returned their booklet of tickets in the Mega-Raffle. The money raised from this raffle goes straight back to families who need and deserve assistance through the Music Support Group Scholarships, thereby raising the standard of music at Loreto for all involved. If you have not yet sold or returned your tickets, please do so by Wednesday of this week as the raffle will be drawn at the Music Night this Friday. Music Scholarships - A limited number of Music Tuition Scholarships (generally covering ¼ or ½ of tuition fees) are now being offered for 2015 to promising students at Loreto College. These scholarships are kindly funded by the Music Support Group. Criteria for the scholarships are as follows:
Currently having private music lessons at Loreto College
Demonstrated regular attendance at lessons and application to practice
Proven commitment to and involvement in extra-curricular musical activities within the College
Family financial circumstances
Application forms for Music Scholarships are now available from the Music Office and must be completed and returned by no later than Monday 3 November. Please note that late applications will not be considered, so to avoid disappointment, ensure that forms are submitted by the due date. nb The list of scholarships awarded remains confidential to the Music Department and the College Administration. Private Music Tuition Applications – All students who intend to take private lessons on any instrument/voice/music theory now needs to re-enrol for 2015. Forms are available from the Music Office and your Private Tutor and are due back by Monday 3 November. Senior Musicians “Dinner” – This has been re-scheduled to this Sunday 2 November, 4pm at Pancake Manor Garden City. All Year 12 Musicians are invited to attend, and there will be Loreto Music teachers and tutors in attendance between 4 pm and 5pm. Outside of this time, students will be unsupervised and transport arrangements must be made by students and their parents. Could all students please look online at www.pancakemanor.com.au/#!menu-pancake-manor/cn83 and then email your meal selection to Music Council Leader Abbey Martin (with such a large group attending it is important we are able to pre-order). Music Night 2014 Friday 31 October 6pm Attendance: It is compulsory for all students in performing ensembles to attend the Music Night in which their group is performing. TERM 4 Water Polo / Swim Squad Training All girls are invited to attend swim training sessions for the Water polo swim session as well as Swim Squad training at the Loreto pool in preparation for the 2014 season. These sessions are held on Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning from 6.30am to 7.45am. Please register at the sports notice board. There is no cost for the swim sessions. MAJESTIC PARK RUNNING Any girls are welcome to join the running training sessions with Clare Geraghty on Tuesday and Thursday afternoon at 3.30pm - 4.45pm. The group meets in the MWC in PE uniform. P & F News Looking back at 2014 If you have been unable to attend any meetings this year but want a better appreciation of what the P&F does then tonight is the time to attend. David Causer will look back on 2014 when he delivers his President’s Report at the AGM which begins at 7pm in room 605 on the bottom floor of the Gonzaga Barry Building. At the AGM which was rescheduled from last month the following roles will also be filled: President, Vice-President x 2, Treasurer and Secretary. There will be changes because some committee members are stepping down as their daughters finish Year 12. You can attend without feeling obliged to nominate for a role or even to speak. Coffee Club Christians WHERE: 2nd Floor Coffee Club @ Carindale WHEN: Weekly Thursday Afternoons 3:30pm - 4:30pm WHO: Year 11s, 12s and beyond Coffee Club Christians is a group of young people who have formed together in faith to catch up after school for coffee and friendship. This group aims to break away from the business of the week. Come and hang out with local teens and meet new people!

Mother & Daughter Sunday High Tea It has been a busy and hopefully rewarding year 8 experience for all. Come take some time out with us to indulge yourself and your daughter in a luxurious, chocolate high tea buffet at the beautiful Stamford Hotel. For something a bit different, this high tea buffet is served alfresco on The Brasserie’s river view terrace, offering a first class view and selection of savoury and chocolate delights, and a variety of teas including herbal/non-caffinated.

BOOKLIST - 2015 Loreto College book orders are to be placed on-line. Please go to the Symons Website: www.symondsed.com.au and follow the prompts. Our school code is LOR01 (LORZERO1). Orders can be placed from Wednesday 22 October 2014. When ordering on-line, payment must be made by credit card and will be processed immediately. ORDERS MUST BE PLACED ON-LINE BY: Tuesday 2 December 2014 You will receive a confirmation email once your order has been placed. Should you not receive confirmation and an Order Reference Number, please contact Symons Educational Supplies on info@symonsed.com.au, as your order has not been received.
OPTION 1: Home Delivery – Orders will be processed and delivered to your residential address between Monday 12 - Friday 23 January 2015. OPTION 2: Pre-packs will be available for collection in the MULWITH BUILDING on:

We will endeavour to place missing item notices in your pack. Should any item be discontinued by the suppliers, the amount will be deducted from your booklist and your invoice will show the CORRECT amount to be paid. Damaged items must be returned to Symons Educational Supplies no later than Tuesday 31 March 2015 with your daughter’s name, class and pre-pack number (refer to your invoice). Please order carefully as we do not accept returns for incorrect ordering. Prices on your booklist are correct at the date of printing and are subject to change by the distributor.
LATE ORDERS will be delivered to Loreto College at the earliest convenience. However, there is no guarantee it will arrive before school begins. Please place your order on time to ensure your daughter(s) will start the year with the correct text books and stationery.
