BLAZERS The new Blazers have arrived and been distributed to the students. This is a reminder that Blazers are a compulsory component of the Winter Uniform, to be worn when travelling to and from school from May 1st and whenever the students are in public. The Blazer is a compulsory item for all students in Years 7, 8, 9 and 10. (The Year 11 and 12 students do have an exemp on from this expecta on as they have an older version of the blazer which is not compulsory to be worn due to the heavy nature of the material which some mes makes it less appropriate to wear.)

Administration PARENT / STUDENT / HOME ROOM TEACHER INTERVIEWS On Tuesday 5 May we will be conducting interviews for each student and her parent/s with one of her Homeroom teachers. The purpose of this interview is to reflect on the student’s progress and to make positive and practical plans for the future. The interviews will have a slightly different focus depending on the student’s Year Level, eg Year 7’s and 8’s will reflect on the process of settling into secondary school and Year 11’s on their adjustment to senior schooling. The Year 10 interviews will begin to focus on the development of each student’s Senior Education Training Plan. Letters, Interim Reports and instructions for booking interview times on-line via Parent Lounge were distributed to students or posted to each family at the end of last Term. Please email Mrs Robyn McKeon mckeonr@loreto.qld.edu.au or telephone the school office as soon as possible if this material has not arrived. The deadline for making interview times on-line is tomorrow Wednesday 29 April at 6.00pm. Can parents please check their interview time as if parents mistakenly made two appointments, one has been cancelled. Interviews will be conducted between 1.30 pm and 6.30 pm and will be for approximately 15 minutes. Classes will conclude at 12.35 pm. Students may go home or be supervised at school until 3.20pm. This interview is in addition to the Parent/ Student/Subject Teacher interviews held in July when parents have the opportunity to talk with each of their daughter’s teachers about her progress in particular subjects. We hope this interview opportunity will enhance communication between families and the College and our ability to provide the very best for your daughters academically and pastorally. Curriculum and Year Level Reports Art News Year 11 Visual Art students have completed their first Experimental Folio that reflects ‘The Literal Representation of Objects’ within a variety of contexts. Their folio contained an Imitationalist, Formalist and Postmodern approach to the object. Through researching, developing, resolving and reflecting, students develop their understanding of communication through visual language; their work reflects the development of their own personal aesthetic. During the term the students had the opportunity to work with an artist , Henri van Noordentburg, in a two hour workshop as part of 2015 goa billboards Project. Anzac Day Commemoration Ceremony Last Thursday the Year 11 Class Captains Beth Kassulke, Georgia Williams, Laura Schenk, Frances Wong, Julia Beiers, Amanda Hansen, Chelsea Kuhl, Imogen Day, Lauren Michael and Sally Groffman went to the ANZAC Commemoration Ceremony for Students representing Loreto College. Up to 4,000 students from primary and secondary schools across south-east Queensland paid their respects to Anzac soldiers at a ceremony in Brisbane's Anzac Square. School captains and student representatives laid wreaths around the eternal flame. Two of our students met the Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk. Lest we forget. Mrs Dawes - French and Geography Teacher
Performing Arts Music On Thursday, 7 May Years 9 -12 classroom Music students will attend a concert by the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. “Lights, Cameras, Action!” features music from the stage, screen and TV presented like the students have never heard before and will feature classics from Star Wars, ET, familiar television themes and popular musicals. Year 7 Happenings New sports equipment has arrived for the Year 7s to use at lunchtime. Yesterday we held the “Grand Opening” of these lunchtime activities. Great enjoyment was had by all, as you can see by these photos. Even the Year 12 Big Sisters came to join in the fun. This will be a self-managed system with the year 7 students taking responsibility for the borrowing procedure and for maintaining a register of equipment. The girls have demonstrated a great deal of initiative and enthusiasm for this project. Our grounds staff allocated many hours over the holidays to create handball courts, an outdoor chess board, seating areas and a grassed area that the girls have nicknamed the “Bowling Alley.” They have also added a splash of colour to the exterior of our building. A new basketball ring should arrive shortly. NAPLAN The NAPLAN test will take place this term. The dates are 12, 13 and 14 May. NAPLAN tests are designed to assess the skills of Australian students in literacy and numeracy. The specific purposes are:
to collect data from the population of Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 students for reporting to parents/carers and schools for systematic reporting
to accommodate the assessment of students against national minimum standards
NAPLAN is a series of tests that assess areas of literacy and numeracy The following areas of literacy are assessed:
Language conventions - spelling, grammar and punctuation
Writing - knowledge and control of written language
Reading - comprehension
In numeracy, the content areas assessed are:

Measurement, chance and data
Space
Algebra, function and pattern (formal algebra for Year 9 only).
Format of the tests The program is conducted over three days from 12–14 May 2015. Usually students sit the tests in their own schools. Years 7 and 9 undertake five tests: Language Conventions, Writing, Reading, Numeracy-non-calculator and Numeracy - calculator allowed. For the Writing test, students will be given a stimulus and asked to write a response to the task in a maximum of three pages. The response formats for questions on all other test papers will be either multiple choice (shade a bubble to indicate the answer) or constructed response (write the answer in a box or on a line). Results from the tests will provide important information about children's progress in literacy and numeracy. Following the tests, schools and students will receive a statement of performance in relation to the national minimum standards. All eligible students in Years 3, 5, 7 or 9 enrolled at State, Catholic or Independent schools must sit the tests unless they are exempt or withdrawn by parents/carers. Co-Curricular Events
Our team shirts were distributed on Wednesday and worn that afternoon at training. By the time the big day arrives we plan to have them well warn. A big thank you goes to EDGE Orthodontics and Clark’s Lifestyle Centre for their sponsorship to purchase the team shirts and Stateside Promotional Merchandise for working with us through the design and production of the shirts. Our Saturday Anzac hike started with parents, teachers and students from Cavendish Rd SHS and Loreto College gathered round for a short Anzac Service under gum trees. Everyone huddled together in a small circle as teaching staff, from both schools, each read a short passage. The Last Post was played and a minutes silence was followed by the rouse on a mobile phone. Before teams were briefed and set forth on a 17km hike over some of the toughest tracks they had encountered so far. The weather was warm and the creeks were dry. The tracks were dusty and just as tough as they were last year. Even though warned, many found the tracks up Camp Mt and Leo’s Break challenging. Everyone completed the circuit and should be proud of their effort. Our next long distance hike will be on Saturday 9 May. It will be a 23km circuit which will include Leo’s Break and a loop around the notorious Hell Hole Break and Centre Rd. There are two creek crossings to negotiate on Hell Hole Break and the rise from the lowest point of Centre Rd offers no relief as it winds its way up the side of the mountain until you reach the top. The Wombats are continuing to forge ahead having raised $546 and are currently in third place on the fundraising ladder. Loreto Coorparoo Two have got their first donation and are working toward raising their minimum target. Well done! Loreto One and Loreto Coorparoo Four, on the other hand, are still to make a start. Teams have about seven weeks left to raise the minimum fundraising to be allowed to participate. Two of our teams are in desperate need of support. Keen to support them? Music News Music Tour – Good luck to all members of Chorale and Big Band, who will be in Mount Gambier this weekend competing at Generations in Jazz – the largest school Big Band festival in the southern hemisphere! Music Tour Meeting – Could all students please remember that we will meet at lunchtime on Wednesday 29 April to answer any last-minute questions and distribute any final information regarding the Music Tour. Please make sure you are available for this meeting so that we can finalise accommodation arrangements etc. Autumn Concert Series Information – We have run two very successful concerts so far and are gearing up for the final concert next week on Friday 8 May. This will be the biggest concert in terms of size of performing groups and number of people attending so could all parents and students please take careful note of the following information? * The concert will start at 6:30 pm and run without intermission to finish between 8 pm and 8:30 pm – students are expected to be in their warm-up venue preparing by 6 pm on the night. * From 6 pm until the start of the concert, parents are invited to have a light supper and are able to purchase beer/wine/soft drinks from the bar. Members of the Guitar Ensembles 1 & 2 are asked to bring a small plate of savoury snacks to the concert to supply this supper. * The program order for the event is as follows: Autumn Concert Three – Friday 8 May (Mary Ward Centre): Symphony Orchestra; Concert Band One; Concert Band Two; String Ensemble; Guitar Ensemble Two; Guitar Ensemble One * There will be no Big Band rehearsal on the day of Autumn Concert Three so that those students can go home and be able to return by 6 pm * Lastly, please carefully note the following College expectations, that have been published previously: Autumn Concert Expectations We ask that parents support us in the following expectations so that the concert experience for all is as successful as possible. 1.
Students are expected to attend the whole of a concert in which they perform – not arrive late or leave part-way through. When not in warm-up or on stage, students should sit in the nominated Student Seating area of the audience and listen to their friends and peers perform. The changes of format we are trialling in this series have been mainly introduced so as to make this participation possible for parents and students. If there is a specific reason that a student is unable to stay for a complete concert, parents should be now have contacted the Director of Music to make arrangements.

Students are expected to wear full Academic Day uniform (including stockings, not socks) for all performances. The only exception to this is members of Guitar Ensemble who will wear all black for their guitar performance and then change if involved with another group.

We would ask that during musical items no-one in the audience uses tablets or phones as this is disrespectful to the musicians on stage. Students using phones at any stage during the concert will have them confiscated by supervising teachers.

For Health and Safety reasons, beverages (especially glassware) cannot be taken into the seating area of the concert venues. Each venue will have designated areas near the bar where drinks and snacks can be consumed. Service at the bar will finish 5 minutes before the scheduled start of each concert.
Rehearsal Changes – Big Band – As Big Band will be leaving for their Music Tour on Friday 1 May, there will be no rehearsal on Friday this week. Additionally, due to the Autumn Concert on Friday 8 May, there will be no rehearsal that day either! See you all again on Friday 15 May (Mission Day). Rehearsal Changes – Concert Band One – There will be no rehearsal for Concert Band One on Thursday this week (30 April) as all Year 11s and Mr Langford will be away on Year 11 Retreat. Donations Please – The annual Loreto Trivia Night is almost upon us! Run by the Music Support Group as both a social evening and fundraiser, the Trivia Night is one of the group’s three main opportunities each year to raise the money necessary to continue to support the Beginner Ensembles Program. We are now looking for donations that could be used as prizes for the Trivia Night. Any small items that can be grouped to make prize boxes for tables of 8-10 people would be ideal and could be left at either the main College Office or the Music Office. Boxes of chocolate, $1 & $2 Scratchies, Movie / iTunes / Playstore gift cards or similar items are all fantastic ideas that would be most welcome! Music Support Group – The next meeting for the Music Support Group is on Wednesday night 13 May, where we will be finalising preparation for the Loreto Trivia Night, to be held on Saturday 23 May. Year 10 Marist Dancing Year 10 Marist Dancing starts next Tuesday 28 April for five weeks. Students who have elected to attend, need to be at the Loreto Service Area at 6.30pm each Tuesday evening. For the first four weeks of lessons, students will return to the College at 9.30pm. Please ensure your daughter has read the dress code attached to the original permission letter and that this is followed carefully. We have a small number of reserves to fill in for students if they are ill. If your daughter is absent from school on a Tuesday morning, please ensure you notify the school office to state whether she is attending the dancing that evening. Community Events Are you a parent of a child with type 1 diabetes? Every day, thousands of Australian children suffer the effects of type 1 diabetes and families struggle with illness management and children’s behavioural and emotional adjustment. Positive Parenting for Healthy Living is an adaptation of the successful Triple P- Positive Parenting Program offering practical ideas and support for parents of children with type 1 diabetes. This innovative group program is designed to help parents manage their child’s illness, assist children in coping with their illness and emotions, and prevent and manage difficult child behaviour. Over the next few months and for a limited time only, parents of 2-10 year old children with type 1 diabetes are able to access Positive Parenting for Healthy Living Triple P as part of a University of Queensland research project. Parents will be able to attend the program free of charge, and will be asked to complete 2 sets of assessment measures (questionnaire and family observation) over a 6 month period, as part of the study. Teen Triple P - Positive Parenting Program The Triple P: Positive Parenting Program is an Australian course backed by more than 30 years of research and success. In an Accoras Teen Triple P course, parents of teenagers learn about strategies for their situation, talk and share stories with other parents and refer to the comprehensive Teen Triple P manual provided to take home and keep.
