Volume 33 - 27 October, 2015 Dear Parents and Students Mary Ward was a woman of vision, courage and persistence. This is evident to us through her story of determination and tenacity. During my recent travels I was fortunate to visit the newly re-modelled Bar Convent Museum in York which houses a wonderful exhibition celebrating the inspiring life story and journey of Mary Ward, foundress of the IBVM. As we traverse the frantic months ahead let us be mindful of the many journeys taken by Mary and her companions to Rome in efforts to establish her Institute. From October 21st to December 24th, 1621 “With four companions, a maid, a priest, a gentleman and a serving-man, two horses, one to carry the baggage and another to ease who should be weary” (1) Mary Ward travelled from Liege to Rome on foot, across the Alps, to ask the Pope’s approval of the vision for her Institute. My thanks and congratulations also to playwright Victoria Carless for her significant contribution to this learning experience. Thank you to all involved. I also offer my special thanks to the P&F for the financial support and encouragement they provided for this venture as this enabled our enthusiastic Facilities team, led by Mr Bill Bradic, to transform the Drama area into a quality Theatre Studio which will serve us well in the years to come until we are eventually able to build our very own Performing Arts Centre as per the Masterplan vision we have.
To the staff and students for their magnificent fundraising efforts last Friday on Pink Day where the College raised $2500 in support of research into women’s cancers. As always this day was full of felicity and frivolity. I thank everyone for their wonderful generosity and support.

WORLD TEACHERS’ DAY This Friday we celebrate World Teachers’ Day. We are most fortunate at Loreto to have teachers of the highest quality. As Principal, I have the privilege of working with them daily and I am continually inspired by their passion, commitment and belief in our students. It is not an understatement to say that teachers transform lives; because, next to our parents, teachers have the greatest influence on one’s minds’ expansion. Let us give thanks to our teachers and never take them for granted. Dear Parents RE: ENTERPRISE BARGAINING PROCESS INDUSTRIAL ACTION I am writing to keep you informed about industrial action that will occur at our school on Thursday. This industrial action is linked to enterprise bargaining negotiations currently being undertaken within Queensland Catholic schools. The majority of teachers and staff at Loreto who are members of the Independent Education Union of Australia – Queensland & Northern Territory Branch, recently voted to take industrial action in the form of work stoppages.
I have been advised that on Thursday, 29 October, there will be one thirty minute stoppage (from 2.45pm to 3.15pm). However, most classes will continue as normal. Where this is not possible, the students will be supervised. It should also be noted for your information that industrial action within Catholic education is being taken on a school by school basis. Along with other Catholic school employers, I respect the right to employees to take appropriate industrial action. I invite you to contact me if you have any concerns or require further information. Year 8 Green and Red have been “Whistling while they Worked” in their first term of studying Art. Inspired by the work of contemporary artist Patricia Piccinini, they explored possible adaptions animals may require to survive in the Twenty First Century. As an added requirement of this task these imaginary creatures were to be made in the form of a whistle. Monday 9 November Last day of classes for Year 12. They are invited to breakfast in the MWC from 7.30am and will depart at approximately 12.30pm. Tuesday 10 November - Tuesday 17 November Exam Block. Music News Symphony Orchestra Are playing their final performance of the year at Villanova’s Band Finale Concert tonight (Tuesday 27 October)! Please arrive at Villa’s Augustine Centre by 7pm (you will be given instructions on where to go for warm-up at rehearsal on Monday). The concert begins at 7:30 pm and should be done by 9pm. Music Night Concert Our final department concert for the year will be held in the MWC this Friday night 30 October. Students should all arrive by 6:00 pm and go straight to their designated warm-up room to meet their conductor (warm-up rooms listed, below). Parents are invited to meet downstairs near the MWC canteen where you can enjoy light snacks, tea & coffee and a licensed bar. (Please remember that drinks cannot be taken into the seated area). Mega Raffle Tickets It is vital that all students return their sold or unsold Mega Raffle tickets to the Music Department by Wednesday this week. While we would obviously prefer that all tickets are sold, it is a legal requirement of this type of fundraising that all tickets are returned and accounted for, so if you have not been able to sell some or all of your tickets please send them back in to school asap. Ensemble Rehearsals After this week’s final concert, most rehearsals will wind down. Many conductors will hold one final “break-up” rehearsal to enable collection of music and a chance to farewell senior leaders so please make sure you check carefully with your conductors and are aware of which rehearsals are going ahead one more time. Please also note that Senior Choir, invited members of Junior Choir and selected instrumentalists will still be preparing for the Graduation Mass in November, our last significant ensemble event for 2015. Performing Arts Loreto College Drama students (Years 10 and 11) presented our production of Paper Moon last week over three consecutive nights. Opening night was full of nervous energy and the girls delivered an amazing performance to a full house. It was wonderful to see the ensemble support each other and celebrate their success together. It was also lovely to have our playwright, Victoria Carless, in the audience opening night. She said we “brought her script to life with such vitality and originality.” Each night the girls built upon their previous performance as their confidence developed and their nerves dissipated. It was obvious on closing night that they thoroughly enjoyed sharing their talents with a public audience. Thank you to our audience who were supportive of the girls. Your laughter, applause and sincere reactions to the sentiment of the story made it a very rewarding experience for our cast. Congratulations to the following girls for their involvement in Paper Moon: Beth Kassulke, Aislind Bell, April Lopez Vaquero, Aimee Conwell, Vanesa Everett, Elizabeth Winter, Anna McGuckin, Ruby Daly, Lucy Briggs, Isla Greenwood, Alice Downie, Zoe Schramm, Sophia Dabinett, Emma O’Brien, Emily Lowe, Alice Crawford, Emily Littleton, Isabella Kubler, Spencer Gauci and Catherine Cockerill. Timor Leste Immersion The day had finally arrived! We rose early on September 21, both excited and nervous, to meet at the Brisbane Airport where we would begin our adventure as part of Loreto’s first Timor Leste Immersion. Team Timor included seven Year 12 students and five Year 11 students who were accompanied by our two wonderful Loreto staff members, Mrs Diane Hanson and Ms Emma Beach. After five hours flying and practising our Tetun, we landed in the capital of Timor, Dili, where our Immersion experience began with Mr Mark Smith, our Catholic Mission team facilitator. Stepping out of the plane into a very dry heat, our surroundings were completely different from Brisbane and every person we encountered was extremely welcoming. We were met by our minibus driver Marcel, a Dili local, who drove us to our first destination, the Dominican Orphanage in Dili, managed by Sister Miller. Upon arrival, we were eager to play and interact with the children of the orphanage. This was such a special moment, singing songs with the kids while the sun set and establishing those early first connections with such welcoming and beautiful souls. After a generous meal from the orphanage, our mosquito nets were pitched and we made ready for the day ahead. We awoke to the sound of angels singing in the nearby chapel. The first couple of days in Dili gave us an opportunity to take in the history and culture of Timor, starting with the Resistance Museum. Founded in 2005, the museum has been established to preserve the memory of the heroic struggle of the East-Timorese people to achieve their independence. Next stop was Santa Cruz Cemetery where we paid our respects to those who passed away in the 1991 Massacre. We rounded off the afternoon with a magnificent walk and 500 stair climb, to the tourist attraction, Cristo Rei; a 27 metre high statue of Jesus located atop a globe in Dili, where we took time to reflect and appreciate our mission amidst the spectacular Dili sunset. Our second night was full of games and music with the children and many fond memories to cherish. Wednesday 22 September was our final morning at the orphanage. It was difficult to say farewell but the connections we made with the children of the orphanage will never be lost. Continuing on from Dili, we had a four hour bus ride to our next destination – Baucau. We were staying in the Melita Guesthouse, which had an amazing view of the ocean from the dining area. After a long day’s travel we indulged in an afternoon at the beach and continued to practice our Tetun with the locals. We really came to appreciate how amazing our group was and how fortunate we were to be in such an incredible country. The second day in Baucau marked our first encounter with the Loreto pre-school. The school is a bright blue building in Gari-uai, about 20 minutes outside of Baucau. Over the two days we spent with the Loreto sisters and the children they care for, our eyes were opened to the amazing work being done in Timor. The children were delightful and we cherished the time we spent with them; playing soccer, skipping, singing, praying, speaking English and Tetun and doing arts and crafts. The four ibvm Sisters are incredibly selfless in their work and their plans for the future of Gari-uai are incredibly exciting. We thoroughly enjoyed our time with Sr Diann, Sr Margie, Sr Francine and Sr Natalie and are proud of the connection we made with the community and fellow Loreto students. We hope to see the relationship between Loreto Coorparoo and Loreto Gari-uai flourish over the coming years. After Baucau, we continued to our final destination, the remote village of Laleia. Bernie Sullivan, a Catholic lay missionary was our host and shared with us her knowledge and love of Laleia, where she has been working to support the community for the past two years. Our sleeping quarters were in the Capuchin Friary, where we were fortunate to fall asleep to the sound of priests singing hymns. Our first afternoon in Laleia was spent walking around the different neighbourhoods, which highlighted the extreme poverty and lack of education in Timor. The next days we spent time at the Capuchin pre-school, playing and working with the children, a truly rewarding experience. To enhance on this experience, the entire group agreed that our last night in Laleia was by far one of the most special times on the trip. Thanks to great timing, we were fortunate to be in Laleia for the beginning of the feast of Our Lady. The festivities commenced with a special mass and we sat in awe watching the cultural event that was taking Mary down from her place in the Cathedral and placing her directly in front of the congregation. Drums were beaten, bugles blared and congas banged. We were completely overwhelmed yet fulfilled, and so incredibly content. Following mass, there was a huge celebration. Most of the town was there, hundreds of people of all ages. There was music playing, and a dance circle begun. It became larger and larger, and we were all invited by the Timorese to join in. It was a truly wonderful moment – dancing in a foreign country, with a Capuchin priest in one hand and an elderly Timorese woman in the other, being fully immersed and content with pure happiness. We’re certain none us will forget that night for the rest of our lives. The next day we returned to Dili for our final night, which included reflection on the fond memories of our 10 days in Timor. The 12 students, two staff and our Catholic Mission facilitator were all absolutely incredible throughout the entire experience. It truly was the trip of a lifetime, with memories made and friendships forged that won’t be forgotten for a very long time. ACHPHER (Australian Council of Physical Education and Recreation) Women in Breakfast The Women in Sport Breakfast was attended by over 680 students, teachers and corporate and Government representatives. Approximately 106 school girls were presented with awards in the Rising and Shooting Star categories. There were some very good guest speakers sharing their experiences and insights into their world of elite sport: Jess Jonassen, Katrina Gorry, Alyce Burnett, Madi Wilson, Katie Bickford and Belinda Wilson. Loreto College invited leaders of Sport and House Captains to attend the morning. Georgia Johnson from Loreto College was nominated for an awarded and received a Highly Commended Shooting Star Award . ACHPER QLD published an article on her on ACHPER face book and website. Congratulations to Georgia for her outstanding efforts in Sport. Loreto House and Sport Captains
Highly Commended Shooting Star Feature Student - Georgia Johnson, Loreto College, Volleyball Georgia is a budding superstar in the sport of volleyball. She was selected in the Qld U19 beach and indoor teams to compete at the Australian junior championships in 2015. As a result of her achievements in 2014 she was invited to the Australian Beach Junior women’s camp in January of this year. In 2014 she was a member of the Australian U17 women’s team that competed in the World Junior U17 Beach Championships in Acapulco, Mexico. She was also selected in the Australian Junior Women’s development squad that toured Thailand and the Australian Junior Women’s team that played at the Asian Indoor Youth Championships. Georgia has also enjoyed success in athletics, netball, cross country, and basketball. However, it is her talent for volleyball that has resulted in her inclusion in the QAS Volleyball squad. She credits her teachers, parents and close friends for their tremendous support and assistance in helping her to reach her full potential.
