Mary said: ‘My soul glorifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me – holy is his name. His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation’. Luke 1: 46‐50 Luke’s Gospel tells us that, as she was waiting for Jesus to be born, Mary visited her cousin, Elizabeth. This was the occasion on which Mary spoke the words of the Magnificat, a prayer which has resonated with Christians throughout the ages. It is called the Magnificat because that was the first word of the prayer in Latin. Older English translations used to begin ‘my soul magnifies the Lord’. Sometimes old words contain their own riches. The image of a soul magnifying God, a bit like a magnifying glass, is evocative. It is our job to help make God seem a bit larger in the lives of people. On behalf of the College Community I offer profound and hear elt thanks to the members of the College Council for their generous support, guidance and encouragement during 2012 as we focussed our energies on the development of a ‘blueprint’ for Loreto’s future in the form of a Master Plan. In par cular I offer my thanks to Mr Sean Reidy, Chair of Council, 2006 – 2012. A er seven years as Chair, Mr Reidy now concludes his term on Council. Both Ms Dunne and I thus wish to express our deep gra tude to Mr Reidy for the extraordinary service he has given to this community with par cular support and encouragement given to both of us as Principals. His wisdom, clarity and common‐sense stewardship will be greatly missed. Also concluding his term on Council is Mr Geoff McMahon, Chair of the Finance Commi ee and Council Member, 2007 – 2012. Mr McMahon too has given loyal and generous service giving par cular support through his financial exper se to the Business Manager, Noel Williams, and to the administra ve team at the College. We are most grateful to Mr McMahon for the countless hours given in careful stewardship. PLEASE SUPPORT US WITH THIS PETITION As many of you would be aware, a number of families have been significantly distressed by the closure of the Route 7 Bus Service. Consequently, the P & F have posted an e-pe
on on the Qld Parliament website.
This service previously provided a “one-bus” journey for students from Loganholme to Coorparoo passing through Rochedale, Mansfield and along the length of Cavendish Road. Because of its closure, students from Loreto, Seton and Villanova Colleges have been forced to catch up to three buses each way to and from school. This is not just a ma er of inconvenience and cost but most importantly it is a ma er of student safety. We therefore urgently seek the support of all community members in asking the Government to subsidise the service as a “Translink route” so that it can be re-instated. You can help even if your child does not use this service. We need as many votes as possible. Anyone who is a Queensland resident can click on the link to vote. \Vg axãá New Loreto Website At the present time we are working on a new Loreto College Website, which will provide lots of important information in a modern interface. We are aiming to launch this website in Term 1 of 2013.
Change of Venue for Year 10 Laptop Distribution In last week’s newsletter the venue for the Year 10 Laptop Distribution to be held on 5th February from 3.30pm to 6pm, was listed as the Mary Ward Centre but this has now been changed to the top floor of Mulwith.
ICT Upgrades In the holiday period there will be some significant upgrades to ICT systems and resources here at Loreto College. We are doing a major server replacement and virtualisation program to enhance all of our systems here at the College. This project has been in the planning stage for a couple of months and fortunately, with the aid of some Federal Government DER money, that project will be completed before Christmas. We are also doing some enhancements to our wireless infrastructure and preparing about 430 laptops which will be distributed to Years 8, 10 and 12 students when they return to the College in 2013. Staff are also receiving their new Tablet PCs early in the New Year as they have had their present machines for three years. The other major project that is occurring is the removal of all of the desktop computers from the IT rooms. Room 210 is undergoing a complete re-development while the other IT specific rooms will be fitted with large monitors, keyboards and mice which students will be able to connect their laptops to so as to access larger screens when doing ICT work. Much of our equipment is at the end of its life but any which is still serviceable has been offered free of charge to less well-equipped schools and charitable organisations for their use. The cost is $22 for normal cleaning, or $27 for a small mend or if the hat requires extra cleaning. Hats and bands are to be placed inside a plastic shopping bag with your name clearly marked on the hat, band and on the outside of the bag. Hats are to be handed into the school office on Friday 30th November BEFORE going to assembly. Payment is required on collection of hats from the second hand uniform shop on Monday 28th January 2013 from 9 am - 12 midday. `ÉäxÅuxÜ Earlier in the term the Caritas students set about supporting Men’s health and had the idea of a FUNraiser! They wanted to alert our girls to health issues that could adversely affect their fathers, brothers etc as opposed to focussing entirely on women’s health issues. The girls (mostly Year 9’s with the support of some Year 11’s) met and created moustache straws then set about selling them. These girls worked beautifully together and it was a delight to see them in action. They gave up lunchtimes to organise the product and then took the time to sell them. They were committed, organised and encouraging of each other. Not one girl attempted to overshadow another or to take credit for the activity. They raised over $160 in support of Prostate Cancer & Beyond Blue. Well done to the girls and in particular to Ms Gallen, who supported their initiative.
c9 Y axãá 2012 Achievements As the year draws to a close it is appropriate to reflect on the performance of the P&F in serving parents and students. So what have we done for you?
Drop Curtain Funds were raised from the voluntary levy and school dances for a ‘drop’ curtain which will allow Physical Education classes to operate simultaneously in the Mary Ward Centre. This was the major project of the year.
Route 7 Bus The State Government was lobbied to reinstate the number 7 bus route from Loganholme whose cancellation this year seriously inconvenienced many Loreto and other families. An e-petition was created on the Queensland Parliament website.
Support Groups The Sport Support Group was created to promote Loreto sport through activities including fund raising and volunteering. It follows in the footsteps of the highly successful Music Support Group which also benefits from P&F funding.
And more The P&F also made donations for a large screen TV for the gym, uniforms, the tuckshop and other worthy causes, organised the Dinner Dance and Father’s Day breakfasts, which were great successes, and worked with Brisbane City Council to improve parking, traffic and bus facilities along Cavendish Road.

Don’t let that special time pass without actively participating in their lives by playing a role at the school. You can do this in many ways, including nominating as a Parent Year Level Representative. Although the school year may be drawing to a close and thoughts turning to holidays, planning for next year is already underway. We are therefore now calling for nominations for 2013. What does it involve? Parent Year Level Representatives generate community spirit by organising events such as drinks by the pool, dinner and other social events. The girls have displayed a vast improvement and this was shown in each game played. Coach: James Duffy. U18’s The Loreto Warriors were defeated by Stuartholme 8 to 3. The Loreto Swim clinic program offers an opportunity for all girls to improve their stroke and fitness, in preparation for the 2013 competitive season. Competitive swimmers will benefit from a customised training program that aims to build on the success from the 2012 season. Social swimmers are welcome.
