BRISBANE CITY COUNCIL SCHOOL PARKING ENFORCEMENT
The College has been advised by Brisbane City Council (BCC) that they will be maintaining a presence around the College with a view to enforcing parking restrictions within the school zones. They have advised that the primary aim is to ensure the safety of students and of others and that PARKING FINES MAY BE ISSUED IN CASES WHERE ILLEGAL PARKING PRACTICES ARE OBSERVED. The College supports the BCC in this initiative and takes this opportunity to remind all who park around the College that the safety of students and respect for the local residents are paramount. Curriculum & Year Level Reports Art Department Year Eight Red have been exploring portraiture. This has involved students exploring portraiture from a range of historical periods and developing their understanding of how qualities of personality are expressed in a visual language. Students have worked with digital cameras and Photoshop to create portraits to explore their own identity. Music Department Year 8 Music All Year 8 girls are currently preparing for performance assessment on Guitar and Drumkit. Ask your daughter what level she has reached so far in Drumkit Karate! Year 9/10 Bands Should be working hard on their performances at the moment. All bands from both grades have been automatically entered into the Loreto Music Festival Bandslam section. They should be ready to perform for Mr Langford during their curricular classes next week! The Year 10 bands will then go to the Ghostgum Recording Studio to professionally record their songs for assessment the week after exams (June 17 – 19). Year 11 Students are currently working on their composition tasks (Final Submission next Monday 2 June) and Extended Response Task. Would you like to hear how your daughter is going? Ask her to load up her composition on Sibelius on her laptop and you can listen to her work - what a great way to be involved and show your interest! Year 10 Subject Selection For the remainder of this term and the first few weeks of Term Three, the Year 10 students will participate in the Subject Selection process for Year 11, 2015. The Deputy Principal of Curriculum, Mr Pat Elsworthy, will speak to the students during PD on Thursday 5 June and, at other allocated times, the Subject Coordinators will speak to the students about the subjects on offer in the Senior School. A Subject Selection evening will be held for parents and students on Monday 4 August. This will be a valuable opportunity to talk with Subject Coordinators and teachers of Year 11 and 12 subjects to gain more information about the Senior Courses on offer. Peer Mentors 2014 This year again, sixteen Year 11 students have completed the Peer Skills two day workshop to train them to become Peer Helpers at Loreto for the rest of Year 11 and on to Year 12. The program, which is under the auspices of LifeLine Australia, is consistent with and supports the Pastoral Care approach to the welfare of students at Loreto College. Peer Skills recognises that when young people have difficulties, they frequently, in the first instance, turn to their peers for support rather than approaching an adult. The purpose of the training is to develop personal strengths within the participants such as self-understanding and the fostering of positive supportive relationships, as well as cultivation of greater competence in problem solving, conflict resolution, goal setting and goal achievement so that the quality of support amongst students is enhanced. The Peer Skills program is an experiential learning workshop aimed at enhancing the peer support, problem solving and help-seeking of young people. The two day workshop builds upon the peer relations skills young people already have and use daily. The program is supported by LifeLine Community Care and the workshop is facilitated by our School Counsellor, Mrs Barb Davies, and Ms Mary Hardie. The group consists of Jessica Balzano, Leah Carey, Samantha Crawford, Grea Effeney, Lauren Effeney, Georgia Garrett, Preem Itthiboon, Rachel Larkin, Julia Logan, Emma Lorimer, Kate O’Sullivan, Tayla-Lea Schulz, Gabryela Sellars, Siobhan Setch, Eloise Sim and Rachael Stafford. Barb Davies - School Counsellor Year 12 Information Night - QCS A reminder of the Year 12 Information Evening, commencing at 7.00pm on Monday 2 June in the Mary Ward Centre. Mr Elsworthy will discuss the components of the QCS Test, SAIs, the scaling process and the calculation of OPs. Careers Counsellor Ms Rynne, will also be available to answer questions about QTAC applications and deadlines for this process. As you are aware, the QCS Test will take place on Tuesday 2 September and Wednesday 3 September, consisting of – Writing Task, Short Response Items and Multiple Choice Questions. Co Curricular Events Debating News The third round of the Queensland Debating Union competition has now finished. The results are shown below. 2014 Kokoda Challenge - We need your help! Well done to Austen, Charlotte, Isabella and Lucy for taking part in the 23km joint hike on Saturday, 17 May, with Cavendish Rd SHS. The longer hike posed new challenges and was a steep learning curve for all those who took part particularly, regarding the need to set a pace that is realistic and avoid the rush of the pack. The hike went over a six hour period across very steep terrain with deceiving inclines. To complete the course, participants needed to keep a careful eye on hydrating and energizing. Thank you to parents, Christy, Liz and Natalie, for doing a wonderful job as our support crew by ferrying water and medical supplies, as well as encouraging us to keep going. In a little less than two months, our Loreto teams will be tested both physically and emotionally as they trek the 48km Kokoda Challenge Track along the Gold Coast Hinterland. Before then they MUST raise funds as part of the challenge. We have two teams; Loreto’s Corrado Crew who have met their minimum fundraising and are well on their way to meeting their goal of $1500. A huge thank you to their supporters. Loreto’s Flying Foxes are still to meet their minimum target and need your support urgently. Time is running out! Co-Curricular Music Concert Bands One & Two and Big Band In Week 6 of this term Concert Band One will move their regular rehearsal to the afternoon of Friday 30 May (just for that one week Big Band will swap to Thursday 29 May). This one-off change will allow us to have a very special rehearsal that you do not want to miss! Members of Concert Band Two will also be invited to come along to this extra special rehearsal which will run from straight after school until 5:30 pm. I am not going to release details of exactly what will happen that day, but it will involve a guest professional band and lead towards some fantastic performance opportunities for later this year. All students in the Concert Bands should have received a letter regarding this event at their last rehearsal. Date Claimer Loreto has been asked to provide some music for the St Catherine’s Fete on Sunday 22 June (at some time between 11 am and 2 pm). We will be taking Sorelle, Exit Stage Left and the Big Band to this event, which is after exam block and prior to the next holidays. If students/parents involved with these ensembles could please add this date to their calendars (and contact Mr Langford if there are any problems or clashes that will affect your attendance) I will publish final details as soon as possible. CaSSSA Cross Country The CaSSSA Cross Country Meet will be held on Thursday 29 May at Redbank Plains Recreational Reserve, Redbank Plains. The girls must be at the College by 6.50am to meet Mrs Stevens. The girls have worked very hard his season and we wish them all the best on Thursday. A special thank you to Clare Geraghty and Andrew Lulham for their professional coaching and commitment to the team. Meg Stevens - Director of Sport CaSSSA Tennis Congratulations to all the girls who competed in the CaSSSA Tennis Competition. It was an outstanding effort from all the girls who competed on Sunday 25 May at the Qld Tennis Centre. Loreto College was awarded 2nd in the percentage trophy and 3rd overall in the competition. On Sunday morning our Year 8 and 9 teams competed with enthusiasm and school spirit. Congratulations to our E2 Tennis team who were awarded premiership with the E3 and D2 team runners up in their division. During the afternoon the Year 10, 11 and 12 teams had some challenging matches. The Loreto Division 1 for B and C team were awarded Premiership with B2 and C3 teams awarded runners up in their division. The final results from our others teams were as follows: B3 Team – 4th in their division, B4 Team - 3rd in the division, C4 Team – 3rd in their division, C5 Team – 6th in their division, D3 - 6th in their division, E 3 (2) – 8th in their division. Well done to all the girls who participated in the competition. A thank you to the coaches: Gary Stickler and Dalibor Bendzala, and the hardworking Court Coordinators, Charlotte McMahon, Emily Smallhorn and Taili Beausang.
