SPECIAL TRIBUTE In this final edition of the 2014 Newsletter I would like to pay a special tribute to Mr Pat Elsworthy on the significant occasion of his retirement. Loreto is proud to award Mr Elsworthy with an ‘Honour Pocket’ for Excellence in Leadership, Service to State & National Education and School Spirit. “Pat has held significant positions of Leadership at Loreto for twenty nine years. He has held the positions of Mathematics Coordinator, Curriculum Coordinator, Assistant to the Principal Curriculum and Deputy Principal Curriculum. The continuous length of service in these roles speaks volumes about his commitment, capability and dedication. Pat is highly regarded and respected for his expertise, experience and intellect. Pat’s leadership is not however limited to this Leadership at Loreto. Pat has also played a significant leadership role in education across the State and at the National level. He has Chaired State and District Review panels; represented the QCEC and QSA on Curriculum, Assessment and Moderation Committees; represented the RI Schools on the QCEC Curriculum Committee; Chaired the QCEC Education Committee; and represented QCEC on many and various QSA working parties. Pat has also held leadership positions in both the Association of Catholic Secondary Schools of Queensland and the Catholic Secondary Schools Deputy and Assistant Principals’ Association. As a member of the Australian College of Educators, he has held Presidential positions at local and state level and served on the National Council as Deputy Chair. In 2009 he was awarded the Australian College of Educators Fellowship. These extraordinary commitments are testament to a career devoted to leadership through service. This service has been well above and beyond the norm. Pat, we honour your outstanding contribution and thank you for your generosity and leadership and for your enduring commitment to Education and to Loreto most especially. This Honour Pocket for Excellence in Leadership, Service to State and National Education and School Spirit is well-earned and thoroughly deserved.”

FROM THE CHAIR OF SCHOOL COUNCIL In accordance with the operational guidelines issued by the Loreto Education Council (LEC), our Principal recently participated in the process of a Summative Review. The review was overseen by Mr Jeff Burn (National Education Director for the LEC, Mrs Madeline Sayer (Retired Principal of Brigidine College), Mrs Margaret Knox (Qld Catholic Education Commission) and myself as Chair of School Council. The process required Mrs Hamilton to submit a written reflection on various aspects of her Principalship. The results of the last Whole School Survey were considered. The Review Panel also interviewed a selection of Council members, staff, parents and students to gain their assessment of Mrs Hamilton’s Principalship. I am very pleased to report that the feedback gave an extremely positive assessment of Mrs Hamilton’s performance as Principal. There were noted strengths in the areas of the Loreto Charism, pastoral care of students and leadership in teaching and learning. On behalf of the school community, I congratulate Mrs Hamilton on the results of the review and thank her for for professional and dedicated stewardship of Loreto Coorparoo.

Art Department This semester the Year 9B Art class designed and produced a mural for the block wall near Mulwith. We worked with the theme Felicity to ensure the image created conveyed a feeling of energy and joy. Students began the task by exploring techniques used in Graffiti Art to create artworks using stencils. The focus was on group work as we investigated the meaning of Felicity, took photographs, manipulated them in Photoshop and explored numerous arrangements of the individual figures to create a unified work that captured the desired theme. This task was not only challenging as a design task; unexpected factors such as the unusual number of windy days and early hot weather added to the physical challenge. It was of great interest to passers-by as the work progressed from chalk outlines to white figures, followed by details in blue and grey and finally, the bubbles. French Trip We wish the 21 students and three teachers who are travelling to France on Thursday a safe and enjoyable three week exchange program. Yasmin, Ava, Lily, Grace, Lauren, Georgia, Phoebe, Isabella, Catie, Emma, Georgia, Maddie, Katie, Lauren, Tiarnee, Rubi, Natasha, Tayla-Lea, Halle, Rachael and Alex – have a wonderful time, enjoy every minute and speak lots of French! The semi- finals were well played though our Loreto Mulhall and Loreto Gold teams needed to start the game more focussed on defence. It was pleasing to note that both teams won the second half, proving that despite losing the game, they played in a determined manner through to the final whistle. Well done! Loreto Blue played a thrilling drop-off with three players on the field for four minutes. Eventually we scored to make it to the Grand-final this Thursday at 6.40pm on field 3. Congratulations! Season Summary: OPEN Barry – 4th in A division and lost the semi-final OPEN Mornane – 5th in C division 16 Mulhall - 2nd in B division and lost the semi-final 16 Ward-5th in C division 16 Deshon – 7th in D division 14 Mulwith – 6th in B division 14 Blue- 2nd in C Blue division, won the semi-final 2-1 and play the grand-final 27/11/14 14 Gold – 2nd in D Blue division and lost the semi-final Overall, the Loreto teams performed quite well in this trial season at White’s Hill. Special thanks to all coaches: Nick Dean, Sarah Pettiford, Paddy O’Donnell, Corey Rawding, Celia Lane, Tim Griffin, Georgia Dennis and Ashleigh and to managers Stephanie Coleman, Stephanie Nolan, Brian Beiers and Jan Wyatt. Your dedication to improving the skill level of all players is admirable. Thanks to Captain Wade Bilton for her assistance. Looking back on another successful year, we can proud of our activities and achievements including the welcome barbecue, welcome morning tea, student dances, Father’s Day breakfast and parent forum, cook book, and supporting the Live & Wired festival, year level social activities and Mary Ward Centre audio visual upgrade. Looking forward to 2015, a year in which we welcome Year 7 and 8 families, we plan to support the heating of the swimming pool, implement initiatives arising from the parent forum including holding information events for parents, and hold another forum.
