Volume 5 - 25 February, 2014 Dear Parents & Students Amidst the many curriculum changes that are currently under considera on at both State and Na onal level, it is pleasing to observe the enthusiasm and professionalism of our Loreto teachers in their commitment to teaching excellence.
As part of the con nuing emphasis being given to “Visible Thinking and Learning” which forms a vital part of Loreto’s Teaching and Learning Framework, this year our teachers are working in partnership with EDUCAA to further promote and develop a “Culture of Thinking” at Loreto in keeping with our philosophy “to be seekers of truth”. This requires our thinking to be cri cal, curious, reflec ve, discerning and challenging. The development of a culture of inquiry, deep thinking, engagement and crea vity will further enhance the learning of our students and our teachers.
“Making Thinking Visible” is our primary goal for 2014. In partnership with EDUCAA we seek to further develop in ourselves and our students thinking disposi ons that promote understanding, increase metacogni on and make thinking visible. During our staff days in January and again last Friday and Saturday, the teaching staff generously and enthusias cally gave their me to engage in professional discussion and reflec on about student thinking and learning at Loreto. Leading us in this were Ms Annelies Hoogland and Dr Bern Nicholls from EDUCAA and Mark Church (co‐author of Making Thinking Visible). Annelies Hoogland is an experienced school leader and educa onal consultant. Her passion and enthusiasm is the crea ve process of leadership for learning. Her most recent focus has been on the development of processes and systems that facilitate quality improvement in learning environments and reflec ve prac ces. Annelies has been involved with Project Zero (Harvard Graduate School of Educa on) ini a ves such as Teaching for Understanding, Visible Thinking and Cultures of Thinking since 2000. She has worked interna onally for twenty years and has served as Principal for interna onal schools in the Netherlands, Egypt and Thailand.

Dr Bern Nicholls is an educator with 25 years of teaching and leading in secondary Catholic schools across Australia. Her PhD was school ‐based with a focus on collec ng student data to inform innova ve ways to engage students in meaningful learning that leads to genuine and transforma ve learning experiences. Dr Nicholl’s thinking is informed by current research on the neurobiology of learning, mindsets and intrinsic mo va on. She has experience delivering professional learning workshops in schools that focus on teacher and leadership renewal and she is an accredited facilitator with the Centre for Courage and Renewal, Sea le, US, founded by Parker J Palmer.
Mark Church has been an educator for nearly twenty years and has par cular interest in helping teachers and school leaders think deeply about their efforts to cul vate thinking and learning opportuni es for students. He works with schools and districts, encouraging efforts to create rich communi es of prac ce for educators commi ed to being mindful students of those they teach and lead. Mark Church has taught elementary and middle school students in the United States, Japan, Germany and the Netherlands. He is a consultant for various Harvard University Project Zero Culture of Thinking and Teaching for Understanding ini a ves in the United States and abroad. Mark has also been a school district administrator in Michigan suppor ng professional growth and is currently pursuing doctoral studies in Educa onal Leadership & Policy Studies at the University of Washington in Sea le. It is a privilege for our teachers to be able to work with such highly regarded and world recognised leaders in Teaching, Thinking and Learning. I thank the teaching staff for their enthusiasm and commitment in being part of this exci ng project.

VtÜxxÜ axãá TSXPO The 33rd annual Tertiary Studies Expo (TSXPO) will be held on Saturday and Sunday, 19 & 20 July 2014 from 10am – 4pm at the Exhibition Building, RNA Showgrounds, Brisbane. Attend for your chance to win an apple iPad. A $2,000 bursary is also on offer. Admission to this event is free. TSXPO is an annual event held in Brisbane and is the largest and longest running tertiary studies expo in Australia. With more tertiary studies on offer each year and with constantly changing career opportunities and pathways, entry requirements and study options, it is hightly recommended students from Years 10, 11 and 12 attend. Next week Loreto will be celebrating Health & Physical Education Week. A number of activities have been planned during the lunch hours, encouraging staff and students to be ‘active’. On Monday the school will participate in a ‘mass’ fitness class. Students are encouraged to bring a towel and water bottle. Tuesday will be the annual Loreto Relay run. One person from each year level will represent her house in a relay through the school. Even staff will be in the mix, representing the houses. On Wednesday, the senior students will play against the undefeated staff in a game of dodgeball (good luck with that one girls, you are going to need it). On Thursday the final activity will be a ‘mass’ Zumba class in the MWC. I hope to see as many students as possible join in the activities and reap the benefits of a physically active lifestyle. Year 8 Beginner Ensembles Having received a large number of applications from students who are keen to take this opportunity to learn either Oboe, Strings or Brass, we are now in the process of finalising places in these groups. `âá|vtÄ ÂVÜtéç yÉÜ lÉâÊ The last week has seen over 16 hours of rehearsals and significant progress with sets, props and costuming. We have been overwhelmed with the response for old wooden chairs, cowboy boots, and other costuming requests so thank you to all for helping us source such specific requests for the musical. We are now in the final fortnight of rehearsals and it is important that all students in the musical are keeping on top of their studies, eating healthy, sleeping well and preparing for the busy weeks ahead. Last Sunday, the students in the musical demonstrated great professionalism, commitment and purpose throughout a long, challenging day. The musical staff are expecting this drive and energy to continue as we begin to ‘put the show together’ into entire acts this week. Ticket Sales Our Opening Night Wednesday 12 March performance is only 50% sold out - there are many great seats still available! Thursday 13 March is 60% sold out, Friday 14 March is 80% sold out and Saturday 15 March only has a few seats left. Thank you to the communities of both Colleges for purchasing tickets, but we are aiming for four full houses so please look to supporting our Opening Night and Thursday night performances. Rehearsals and crew ‘Bump-in’ This week we have rehearsals on Tuesday 25 Feb 4 - 8pm, Friday 28 Feb 4-8pm, and Sunday 9am - 5pm. Tuesday and Friday rehearsals finish at 8pm for all students in the cast, crew and orchestra. Loreto Seniors attending the Senior Retreat this week are strongly encouraged to attend this Friday’s rehearsal however, if they are unable to do so after such a busy week, can parents please confirm absences with Mr Jason Lane, Musical Producer, at Villanova College. This Sunday’s rehearsal is 9am - 5pm, with lunch and afternoon tea provided. The musical crew is bumping in audio/lighting this Saturday from 9am - 1pm (wear closed footwear only). Musical Catering Helpers Thank you to the musical parents who organised a very healthy lunch and afternoon tea for the musical students and staff last Sunday. For parents helping this Sunday, please arrive at the Villanova Tuckshop at 11am so we can begin to prepare lunches and afternoon tea. We will be finished by 1.30pm. câuÄ|v fÑxt~|Çz Lions Last Tuesday 18 February, Maddie Lloyd and Greta Carlson presented their prepared speeches and their impromptu speeches at the Runcorn Tavern. The girls were confident, articulate and passionate. They were given many compliments and were warmly received. Their prepared speeches were on Politics and Youth and Volunteering respectively. Last night, Rebecca Lloyd and Sarah King presented their topics on Social Media and Refugees respectively at the Coorparoo RSL Club. They too spoke with conviction and enthusiasm and delivered the impromptu speeches confidently. All four girls interviewed extremely well. As a result of the interviews and speeches, Maddie Lloyd was chosen from the Macgregor branch as the entrant to go forward to the next round of the Zone B Finals on Saturday 8 March. Congratulations, Maddie! From the Coorparoo branch, Rebecca Marshall was the winner of the evening. Congratulations, Rebecca! More news of their progress will follow! Swim Squad Meet The second Swim meet for the Swim Squad is St Peter’s Invitational Meet which will be held this Friday 28 February from 4.00pm - 7.00pm. Cross Country Training The Loreto Cross Country coaches Andrew and Clare, are starting the cross country training program for the season starting 3 March. Any interested runners need to sign up at the Sports office. The times for training are as follows: 3.30pm to 4.45pm on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. 6.45am to 8.00am on Tuesday and Thursday morning. Meet the coaches at the Mary Ward Centre 5 minutes prior to starting.
Swim for Fitness/Water Polo Players and Stroke Development The Swim for Fitness training is on Wednesday and Friday morning from 6.45am to 8.00am at Loreto College. Instructions on Viewing your Daughter’s Assessment Calendar 1. Viewing an Assessment Calendar is done through ‘Parent Lounge’ which is accessible to all parents via the Loreto College Website www.loreto.qld.edu.au. 2. From the Home page of the website click on the ‘My Loreto’ option at the right of the screen. Then go to ‘Parents’ and then finally ‘Parent Lounge’.
3. Once you have logged in to ‘Parent Lounge’ choose the ‘School Calendar’ option from the top menu.
4. Once you have clicked on ‘School calendar’ the entire school calendar for the current month will appear. To just see your daughter’s assessment calendar you should use the ‘Filter’ function, which is at the top left of the screen.
5. On this screen you should select the category of ‘Assessment’ and then the Year level that your daughter is in. Finally click ‘Go!’.
6. Now you will see that the calendar has been filtered to show only the assessment items in your daughter’s year level. Students are also able to access their assessment items on the calendar in ‘Student Café’.
