Winter Solstice Did I hear a groan today, or was it the ancient sigh of Earth turning slowly in her frozen winter bed, a momentary yawning before she re-enters sleep, snoring through the months â€˜til warm breezes stir her blood? An easy stillness sings beneath the snow, a canticle of acceptance plays upon the harp of frost, wind lullabyes terminal buds, while seeds of a past season lay locked in the deep slumber of a hushed and waiting soil. My heart understands this season and lately has learned to respond. She, too, climbs inside the cave, nestles close to silent seeds, she, too, presses her check to the hibernating dark while she dreams of transformation. By Joyce Rupp

STAFF LEAVE At the end of another busy term, I take this opportunity to thank the Loreto staff for their magnificent efforts on behalf of the students. I offer thanks to Ms Anne Foster and Mrs Anne Heathcote for being with us this term. I also wish to congratulate and thank Ms Stewart for her leadership of the Languages department these past twelve months whilst Ms Tilly has been on leave. This term we also farewell Ms Kastrissios from Loreto and wish her well for the future. Next term Mrs Cuskelly will be taking long service leave for the term and Ms Rynne will assume the responsibility for Workplace Learning. Mr Elsworthy will also be on leave for the initial three weeks of Term Three and Mr Lourigan will be the Acting Deputy Principal – Curriculum whilst Ms Cody assumes the responsibilities of Acting Science Coordinator during this time. Both Mrs Shaw and Dr Downey will also be on leave for the first two weeks of next term. BEST WISHES 

To Mrs Hada-Baxter, Mrs Hanson and the twelve students of Japanese who, during these holidays, will travel to Japan to visit Kanagawa Gakuen School for a cultural exchange. We wish them safe and happy travels and a wonderful and enriching experience.

To Georgia Johnson (Year 11) who will be representing Australia at the Under-17 Beach Volleyball World Championships in Mexico over the school holidays. Georgia will travel to California with the Australian team to participate in an intensive training camp before she heads south to the beautiful city of Acapulco, Mexico ,to compete against the best youth volleyball players around the globe from July 15 - 21. We wish Georgia a safe and successful journey.

New Cashless System is live! Loreto College is always seeking to make your interactions with the school more convenient and secure and that’s why we have engaged Flexischools (Australia’s leading school payment system) to provide a new cashless way to use the school tuckshop. This system allows parents or students to place an Online Order for the tuckshop from home, work or school at any time via the internet or your mobile device. Students can also use their Student Card to purchase items over the tuckshop counter. The cashless card system will be live at the beginning of Term 3, 2014. Student Card Payments Students can now use their student card to purchase goods at the tuckshop. Parents set up a Flexischools account online and pre-load their account with funds. Students can make purchases at the tuckshop by swiping their card at the cash register. Parents can view their daughter’s purchases online and can set a daily spending limit on the student’s card. The cards do not carry any financial information on them and connect to a secure database here at school. When a student makes a purchase her photo appears on the cash register screen ensuring another student’s card cannot be used. If a student loses a card, it can be disabled very quickly and a student issued with a new one. Once replaced with a new card, that old card cannot be used for purchases as part of the security process. Online Ordering From the beginning of Term 3, parents and students will be able to order from the tuckshop online up to 9:30am in the morning. The payment for this is also done online, so you no longer need to send cash or a paper order to school. As well as being convenient for parents, the online orders are more accurate and much faster for the tuckshop to operate.

Set Up Your Account Setting up an account for either Online Ordering or Card Payments is done online and only takes a minute. Simply go to www.flexischools.com.au and click Register. If you have a son or daughter in another school and have already set up a Flexischools account, you can simply add your daughter to your existing account. You will be sent an email with further instructions on how to complete the registration. Once registered, you can start placing orders immediately. You can activate the card payments during the online registration by entering your student card number indicated on the student card.

The system operates via a pre-paid account, so you donâ€™t need to scrounge for coins in the morning and can easily budget for your spending throughout the term. There are a variety of payment options supported, including Visa, MasterCard (credit and debit), PayPal and Bank Transfer. Some top-up methods have fees or restrictions â€“ please check online for details. What does it cost? Student Card payments at the canteen attract no transaction fee, but online pre-orders of food incur a 25c fee per order. Bank Transfers are free but cause a delay for the funds to reach us. Credit Card payments are online and immediate, but incur a 29c fee, which is similar for PayPal, but the fee is 35c. Athletics Carnival A reminder that students will be attending the Interhouse carnival on Friday 27June at the University of Queensland track. This is the last Interhouse sporting event for the year and all students are expected to attend. Magazines, ipod players, MP3 players and the like are NOT permitted. Students are to wear correct school sports uniform including normal sports runners and cap and can change into house colours once they arrive at school. Students will travel to and from the carnival by bus and will receive their reports when they return to school in the afternoon. If any student is not able to be here on Friday 27 June, her report will be posted home. Students who are unable to participate for medical reasons are to see Ms Carty with a note prior to the carnival date and will be issued with a job on the day. There will be limited canteen facilities but it is strongly advised that each student brings her own lunch. Students should ensure they have a Loreto Sports hat, sunscreen and water bottle. Students are asked to ensure that they come prepared for potentially overcast and windy weather conditions with warm clothes (Loreto Jumper), spare shoes, socks and shirt, rain jacket and/or umbrella. Brisbane City Council - Parking Review Taskforce We have been advised by our local Councillor, Cr Ian McKenzie, that the Brisbane City Council (BCC) has established a Task Force to review parking all around the city. While the Terms of Reference for the Task Force are quite broad, one particular aspect if parking behaviour around schools. Community members will be aware that the College has taken a number of steps over the years to improve parking behaviour around the College and to this end we support this BCC initiative. The Task Force is calling for submissions and there are a number of avenues available for having a say:   

Art Department “I am enough of an artist to draw freely upon my imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.” Albert Einstein Year Eight Art Students have certainly been developing their imagination as they worked to create a clay bust with a mixed media headdress to represent Habits of Mind that are of particular importance to Art. They explored Thinking Flexibly, Taking Responsible Risks, Responding with Wonderment and Awe, Gathering Data Through All Senses and Creating, Imaging and Innovating. A Year Twelve Art Student needs the “Clothing Swing Tags” which come on new garments, for her latest Body of Work. Year 10 Camp The Year 10 Camp for 2014 will occur in Week One of Term Four, from Wednesday 8 October to Friday 10 October. Loreto has had a long history with our camp providers, Meebunbia who operate as part of Camp Kokoda near Maroon Dam. A representative will be speaking with the Year 10 group during PD time this week to describe the camping and outdoor education experience and to address any questions from the students. Information for parents and forms will be distributed early in Term Three. We are looking forward to sharing a range of exciting and memorable experiences with the Year 10 group. Parking is available at the Wintergarden complex at a flat weekend rate of $10. Access to this carpark is via Elizabeth Street.



Professional photographers will be on-site from 6.30pm if parents wish to avail themselves of this service.

The girls have been fully briefed about expectations of behaviour for themselves and partners on the evening. We ask that parents support us by escorting their daughters and partners to the venue at 7.00pm and then picking them up at 11.30pm. No one will be allowed to leave the venue before this time. We again remind you that the girls do not need additional forms of transport to get them to and from the venue. As you are aware, the College does not support the girls attending ‘post parties’. We urge you to ensure planned and careful supervision so as to avoid any potential legal breaches and harm. The safety of the girls is paramount. We look forward to sharing this special occasion with you.

Music Department Music Support Group The Music Support Group is a fantastic group of parents who help at concerts (canteen, raffles), run social events (Trivia Night, Live & Wired Music Festival) and fundraise (Mega-raffle, Bar at concerts) to support Music Tuition Scholarships. The group’s next meeting on Wednesday 23 July is our AGM. At this meeting we will farewell our President, Mrs Jenny Hunter, and one of our Secretaries, Mrs Caroline Fernandes, as their daughters’ both graduate this year. We would like to thank them sincerely for their efforts on behalf of the music students. While the group as a whole is incredibly supportive and always willing to help with all tasks, it is still important to have parents to fill these vital executive positions. If you are interested in becoming involved in the Music Support Group in any way, or even willing to take on a leadership role, please feel welcome to contact the Coordinator of Music, Mr Ben Langford (langfordb@loeto.qld.edu.au, 3394 9915) who would be thrilled to talk to you! Mr Smith’s Composition Earlier this year we unfortunately had to cancel a planned Year 9 excursion to see the Queensland Symphony Orchestra’s Annual Schools Concert. The good news is we have instead been able to organise tickets to a different QSO concert called “Mr Smith’s Composition”. We will go to this concert in the first week of Term 3 (Thursday 24 July and take both the Year 9 and 10 Classes. “Mr Smith’s Composition” is a narrated journey that will take the students through composing a masterpiece, and learning how the instruments of the orchestra transform the notes on the page into the music we hear. Congratulations To the students from the Year 10 Music classes who went to Ghostgum Studio last week to record their original compositions. The recordings can now be found on the student common drive – ask your daughter to play them for you as all four groups ended up with great quality results. Well done girls! 2014 Kokoda Challenge - On the Home Run! It has been a long time since we started training on 5 February with a 6.5km walk around Whites Hill that challenged everyone. Today, Whites Hill feels relatively flat and 15kms an easy stroll. On Saturday 28 June, we will find out how ready we are. This Saturday the girls will tackle the last 28km of the Kokoda Challenge track as part of their final preparation; it will take about 7 hours to complete. This is the section we will be walking in the dark. The section of the route traverses tracks from Syd Duncan Pk via Hell Fire Pass and Nerang State Forest to the Nerang Cycle Way. It will be a joint training session with Cavendish Road State High School who have provided us with lots of assistance over the year. To prepare for this, the girls have collectively walked about 2,000 kilometres. Lucy and Austen are still in the lead, having now walked in excess of 300 kilometres each over a 60 hour period of school based training. Well done! Our fundraising efforts have also confirmed the generous nature of our school community. We are currently in second and third place on the fundraising ladder for all school teams in the competition. Only one team from Mt Gravatt SHS is in front. Without the support of our school community we could not have achieved this. Both Loreto College teams are close to raising their $1500 targets. Anyone wishing to help us meet this target is encouraged to log onto the Kokoda Challenge website and place your donation. The best way to do this is to visit: http://kokodachallenge.com/kokoda-challenge-find-team and search loreto. The girls will appreciate your help to get them over the line. We are less than four weeks from the 48km challenge which starts at 12 noon, Saturday 19 July. We can be tracked on the internet at: http://www.kmltracks.com/. The team identification numbers to watch are JS61 (Loreto’s Flying Foxes) and JS62 (Loreto’s Corrado Crew). You will get a good idea where we are positioned on the track and what sort of terrain we are crossing in real time. Watch our speed drop as we climb mountain inclines of 550 metres. Co-Curricular Music Catholic Colleges’ Music Festival (QCMF) Each year, ALL Loreto ensembles (except beginner brass and strings) enter the Catholic Colleges’ Music Festival in August. This provides our students with an important opportunity to 1) perform in public, 2) hear similar ensembles from other schools play, and 3) receive formal feedback from a range of experienced musicians. This festival is an important event in our Performance Calendar that we take very seriously. It is also one of our three compulsory performances for the year (along with the Autumn Concerts and Live & Wired/Music Night) and therefore our expectation is that ALL students in our ensembles make themselves available for whatever performance times we are given by the Festival. These times are now available and have been published in this newsletter. Could I ask parents to please check this list carefully with their daughters and compare it to their other commitments for that weekend? If you have any clashes, please contact me at the school urgently. Loreto has no control whatsoever over these times, BUT if there are clashes that we are told about now, it may be possible to at least try to negotiate with the organising committee. Parents should also be aware that they are able to try to negotiate changes with other commitments as well. Communication as soon as possible will be the key to keeping all parties happy! Loreto Music Festival Finals Concert The Finals Concert is on this Wednesday 25 June from 6pm to 10pm in the Mary Ward Centre. A list of all finalists has been published on the Music Noticeboard and in previous newsletters. Could all Finalist please bring a plate of finger food for the supper during intermission? Any other students who are attending the Finals Concert are also encouraged to bring a plate to share as, while there are only a small number of finalists at this event, it still always draws a large audience!

Chorale, Clarinet Ensemble One, Flute One & MEX Performers On Sunday 27 July these Loreto ensembles will be providing a concert for the residents of the Casa D’Amore Retirement Village. This is a lovely way in which we can participate in our local community and also provides a nice opportunity for these groups to warm up for QCMF. Students are asked to meet between 12:45 pm and 1.00pm at the venue, Park Street, Coorparoo. Looking for Oboe Students The school has two oboes that are presently not being used. If there are any students who might be interested in trying out this beautiful sounding instrument, see Mr Langford as we would lend the oboes out free of charge to students who organised either shared or individual lessons. Why not come along with a friend? Congratulations To the members of Big Band, Exit Stage Left and Sorelle who performed at the St Catherine’s Fete on Sunday. The students were under pressure with a very short setup timeframe and had to be very organised and focussed. Sport News Athletics There will be a training session at QE11 directly after school for all disciplines on Tuesday 24 June. A bus will take the girls to the QE11 stadium and return to Loreto College at 5.30pm. A permission form MUST be collected from the Sport Department and returned on the day. Middle Distance training times are as follows at Loreto: 

Thursday 26 June from 6.45am to 8.00am and 3.30pm to 4.45pm.

Girls MUST wear their PE uniform for all training. All girls are welcome to sessions and if participating in hurdles, high jump and throws, are strongly encouraged to attend the training sessions. Pre-carnival Field Events in Shot Put and High Jump The Shot Put and High Jump events will be held at school prior to the carnival. We do not have enough time or space for these events on the day. Students competing must be in correct PE uniform including cap and shoes. We encourage all girls to participate and earn points for their house. If your daughter is selected for the squad or would like to challenge to be in the Athletics Squad they are welcome to come to training at QE11, Kessels Road, NATHAN.
