Par cularly in this year when celebra ons focus on ‘Making a difference’. The Act of Kindness provides a great opportunity to give witness to the message of Jesus and the mission of the Church beyond the curriculum. The Act of Kindness highlights the Gospel values of jus ce, compassion and kindness. It helps promote a sense of community responsibility that is at the heart of the ethos of Catholic educa on. INTERHOUSE ATHLETICS CARNIVAL Despite one ‘wash out’ and a day of intermi ent showers we eventually completed the full program of events for the compe on held last Friday. I congratulate the student leaders and all par cipants on their efforts with par cular congratula ons for the winning House, Mulhall. It was exci ng to see seven records broken on the day, with one da ng back to 1980. Congratula ons to the Track & Field Champions and also to Mornane and Ward Houses as joint winners of the Spirit Cup. It is now illegal to make a right hand turn when departing from the Circular Drive. A “No Right Turn” sign has been erected on the footpath across from the College.

The former “Taxi Zone” immediately south of Circular Drive has now been converted to a Loading Zone meaning that it can be used for 2 minute drop-off and pick-up between 7.00am and 9.00am and also 2.00pm and 4.00pm.

The Loading Zone behind the College in Lade Street has been extended to allow more access during peak times.
Parents should be aware that Queensland Police and BCC do monitor parking and traffic around the College from time to time and have issued infringement notices for breaches of the regulations. The safety and wellbeing of our students, parents and staff are of paramount importance and this will be ensured when all parking and traffic regulations are complied with. WÜtÅt axãá On Wednesday, Year 9 and 10 Drama students are attending the Bille Brown Theatre to see “1001 Nights”. This is a performance, devised by Helen Howard and Michael Futcher, which tells the traditional Persian tale, using strong theatricality and Persian style song and dance. Queensland Theatre Company, Queensland Music Festival and Zen Zen Zo Physical Theatre company are partners in the production of this theatre experience so we expect it will be an extraordinary experience. `âá|v axãá CQU School Jazz Festival Over the weekend the Jazz Ensemble performed at the CQU Jazz Festival in Rockhampton, in front of prominent musicians and educators Jeff Jarvis and Bob Coassin, as well as QMF Music Director James Morrison. The girls had a fantastic weekend and performed brilliantly. The band received a Gold Award for their adjudicated performance along with a bunch of other accolades. Congratulations to all the members of the band, plus Isabella Kirkman (Outstanding Vocal Soloist); Melissa Roberts (Outstanding Trombone Soloist); Meg Ingram (Outstanding Piano Soloist); Lucy Nielson (Outstanding Drummer); Melissa Roberts, Laura Schenk & Rachel Larkin (Best Trombone Section); Abbey Martin, Lauren Effeney, Meg Ingram, Isabella Kirkman & Lucy Nielson (Best Rhythm Section). Music Support Group AGM The Music Support AGM will be held Wednesday 24 July (this week) at 7:30 pm. All parents of music students are encouraged to attend! Catholic Colleges Music Festival – IMPORTANT DATE CLAIMER All parents of students in Loreto Ensembles please take careful note of the QCMF performance schedule published in this newsletter. Virtually all Loreto ensembles will be performing at this festival at some stage between Thursday 15 August and Sunday 18 August and attendance is expected. Rehearsal Information After having five weeks off rehearsals with exams and holidays, we now are very close to our major performances at QCMF. It is not possible to add EXTRA rehearsals into our students very busy schedules but we have for a number of years run some slightly lengthened regular rehearsals to help with preparation for this important Festival. We would ask parents to strongly support these extra times as it is the only time in the year we make this request. Over the next few weeks, please be aware of the following extended rehearsal times. String Ensemble Will begin slightly early at 7.00am on Wednesday 31 July. In the week of QCMF, due to the Wednesday Ekka Public Holiday, String Ensemble will instead rehearse on the morning of Friday 16 August. Students with other music/sport commitments at this time would be excused but we are hoping all other students will be able to attend. Orchestra Rehearsal on Monday 29 July will be extended to a 5:30pm finish. Please also be aware that, due to Loretos’ extended holiday break and Villanova’s Parent/Teacher Interview Day, there will be no Orchestra rehearsal on either Monday 15 July or Monday 22 July. Our final rehearsal for the year will be directly after QCMF on Monday 19 August. At this rehearsal you need to bring music and party food – but no instruments.
Upcoming Performances/Events String Quartet The String Quartet will be performing for Catholic Education Week at the Annex of Parliament House tonight, Tuesday 23 July from 5:15pm to 6.00pm. Exit Stage Left & Sorelle Once again, Exit Stage Left and Sorelle have been invited to perform at the Mt Carmel Fete. Apart from being a fun day, this is an excellent preparation for our upcoming QCMF performances. ESL will play from 11:20am to 11:30am and Sorelle from 11:35am to 11:50am. Please contact Mr Langford or Mrs Nielson urgently if this date/time causes any problems. Primary Music Camp The Loreto Music Camp for local primary students will be held on Sunday 25 August. The finale concert for this event will once again feature a performance by our own Concert Band One and a number of advanced students from both Concert Band One and String Ensemble will be asked to attend at various times of the day to act as section leaders and instrument tutors for the younger students. Members of those two ensembles, please put this date into your diaries! Senior Excursion date claimer All students who are studying music in Years 11 and 12 please note in your diaries Blood Brothers – Thursday 8 August 7:30pm. Blood Brothers is a musical that has run on London’s West End for the past 24 years (over 10,000 performances). Based loosely on a book by Alexandre Dumas (Count of Monte Cristo, The Three Musketeers) it tells the story of twin brothers separated at birth. This is only the second time the show has come to Australia and the Senior Music classes will be attending as part of our study of Music of the Stage & Screen.
2014 Musical It gives me great pleasure to announce the 2014 Villanova and Loreto Colleges Combined Musical is "Crazy for You". Winner of the 1992 Tony Award for Best Musical, "Crazy For You" is a high energy musical comedy set between the hustle and bustle of New York in the Roaring Twenties, and the lifeless western town of Deadrock, Nevada which features engaging characters, plot twists, fabulous dance numbers and classic Gershwin music. "Crazy for You" will be be performed in the Hanrahan Theatre, Villanova College over 4 nights from Wednesday 12 March Saturday 15 March 2014. Auditions for lead, chorus, orchestra and dance group positions will commence later this term. Students in Years 9 -11 with skills and talents in singing, dancing, acting and performing are encouraged to apply for positions. Further auditions will take place during Term 4, with the full cast announced later this year. Students considering involvement in the 2014 Musical need to be available for weekday afternoon and weekend rehearsals from January 22 – March 15 2014, depending on their role in the production.

Some of the rehearsals will involve late nights, and the production week of 12-15 March will prove particularly demanding on students. Students involved in the musical need to make sure they are available for all rehearsals and fully committed to the success of the production so we can maximise our rather short preparation period in the first 7 weeks of Term 1, 2014. I would encourage students and parents to discuss the likely impact of these demands prior to auditioning for places. The curtain finally drops Some of you may wonder what the P&F levy is spent on. An excellent example can be seen in the Mary Ward Centre (MWC). Over the last school holidays a curtain was installed in the MWC to separate physical education classes which are conducted simultaneously. The ‘drop curtain’ was the focus of our fundraising in 2012. Since our last newsletter article the school has also purchased an evacuation chair for students with special needs. The chair is among a number of purchases or investments planned for 2013 using P & F funds raised from the P & F ‘contribution’. Also on our shopping list are a dishwasher for the MWC, an upgrade of the air-conditioning in the drama room and a defibrillator. You can expect more news on those items in future newsletters. Open C, Junior A and Junior C teams play away and the Open A team plays at home. Open C team plays Stuartholme at Mitchelton Football Club, Teralba Park, Osborne Road, Mitchelton. Junior A and C teams both play All Hallows at Carmichael Park, 175 Boundary Street, Tingalpa. If students are being picked up from Tingalpa or Mitchelton, students must provide a signed note to Mr Jones, no later than the morning of the fixture. The away teams will return home @ 5:30-5:45pm depending on the traffic. The Open A team plays All Hallows at Annerley Soccer Club, 98 Victoria Terrace, Annerley. The home games will finish at 5:00pm and students need to be picked up at the venue. Students are reminded to bring their uniform, shin pads, mouth guards and water bottles. Good luck! Chris Jones - Soccer Coordinator Junior A The Junior A Soccer team played Brigidine and won convincingly 3 – 1. The team got off to a good start with a goal in the first minute by Izzy Iovenitti. After dominating possession throughout the game and multiple shots at goal, the girls effectively used the wing to make several breaks which put pressure on the defence. This pressure paid off on the scoreboard, with goals from Tiaan Smith and Audrey McCosker. Great game girls! We look forward to next week’s game! Matilda Ingram - Coach Junior C All of the girls tried their best throughout the whole game and they were a bit unlucky not to score a goal. The team started to work better in defence as well as in the transition from defence to attack. Audrey had a great game as goalkeeper. Well done girls. Luke Duncan - Coach Open A The Open A team had a narrow escape drawing with Brigidine 2 - 2. At half time we found ourselves down 2 - 1 despite dominating field position. Carla effectively kicked the ball around the keeper to score the first goal. Late in the first half Jemima was unlucky not to score also. The second half was an even affair with both teams having chances but with only seconds to go, Zoe-Lee weaved through the defenders to level the score. It was a good effort and the girls persevered even when it appeared the game was over. Well done! Mr Jones - Coach

Results Round 6: 17 July Open A Unfortunately we had to forfeit this week. A scratch match was played borrowing players from other teams who were also without a number of players. Matt Lourigan - Open A Coach Open B The B Team started strongly against Mt St Michael’s and scored their first goal in the opening 10 minutes. The rest of the first half saw many attempts by Loreto to extend their lead. With some team changes at half time, Loreto continued to attack strongly. Mt St Michael’s managed some breakaway runs but were held out of the scoring zone. Loreto scored their second goal around the middle of the half from good team work and quick reflexes with the final result being Loreto 2 - Mt St Michael’s Nil. Open A vs Our Lady’s College - Won 17 - 13. This was a very close game and certainly one of our stronger performances for the season. We led at half time, but some impressive goals by opposition shooters saw the tables turn in the third quarter. The girls were committed to the end and gave their best. A post-holiday fitness slump did cost us some defensive pressure in the second half. Special mention goes to Amy Paholski and Zoe Zils who are to be commended for strong attacking play. Open B vs San Sisto - Lost 15 - 22. Coming back from the holiday break the girls had a slow start, scoring only three goals to San Sisto's 13 in the first quarter. However as the game progressed their determination grew, closing the margin with each quarter. San Sisto fought hard, and despite Loreto's best efforts, we were unable to level the score board, despite playing the better game on court. We hope for a better result week ladies! It was a close game but unfortunately the girls came away with a loss. Everyone played well considering it was the first game back. Jacqueline West shot well, Julia Edwards was strong throughout the mid court and Kess Eisentrager defended great for the game. Solid effort girls, looking forward to next week. Coach – Brittany Holahan Junior A - The game against Lourdes Hill, competition leaders. The girls’ skills were really tested with Lourdes Hill winning 28 - 8. Emily Quinn and Emily Lowe were outstanding in the defensive circle making the Lourdes girls work hard for every shot they attempted. Their teamwork and effective defence even won them accolades from the Lourdes coach. Great effort girls! Coach - Lyn Dixon Junior C vs Mary Mackillop - Won 16 - 4. The Junior C team had an outstanding game this week, scoring their first win of the season defeating Mary Mackillop. All players worked together to bring the ball down the court and set up scoring opportunities. Fantastic defense by Martina and great attack work in the circle by Kate, Despina and Maggie helped secure the win. Coach - Stephanie Esprester Junior D vs Mt St Michael’s - Won 35 - 1. The Junior D team played an excellent game of netball - the best of the season against Mt St Michael’s. Every girl gave it their all, winning a lot of ball possession by chasing loose balls! This has been a wonderful improvement since the start of the season. A special mention to Gabi for her excellent clearing in attack and to Katie for her stellar shooting and driving forward to the ball. Excellent work girls! Coach - Sarah Pettiford Intermediate A - Lost 15 - 18. This was the first game back after holidays and the team suffered an unfortunate and undeserving loss 15 - 18. The girls were extremely enthusiastic and played very well. Congratulations to those girls who stepped out of their comfort zones and those who tried to show what they had learned in training. Hopefully next week the girls will come out on top. Coach - Magdeleine Ryan Intermediate B vs St John Fisher - Lost 35 - 8. Accurate shooting by Georgia Burge enabled the team to make a lead from the start. However if it weren't for Grace O'Shea's dominant defensive efforts and intercepts, there would not have been countless attacking opportunities. Well done everyone! Coach - Bridget O’Connor Intermediate C vs St Rita’s - Lost 9 - 8. Unfortunately the team were defeated by St Rita's College. The game itself was extremely tight with the score ending 6 - 6 at the end of the third quarter. Recognition must go to Felicity's excellent footwork in the circle, and Alana's precise circle feeding. Better luck next time girls! Coach - Ashleigh O’Connor Intermediate D – BYE Intermediate F(1) – A great game by the girls this week especially after three weeks’ holidays. Each girl worked extremely hard for the win over St John Fisher College, however a special mention to Sophie Tomlinson for her shooting success this week! Well done girls. Vicki Wilson Cup Friday 19 July saw the Open A Netball Team heading off to the State Netball Centre for the Vicki Wilson Cup Tournament. In a pool of eight schools we finished a reputable fourth and faced some very strong competition. The best game of the day for the girls was against John Paul College who went on to win the Metropolitan East division. All team members played extremely well and should feel proud of their efforts. Sam Firrell captained the team with enthusiasm. Our game really improved over the course of the day and we won our last three rounds convincingly. It was a pleasure to spend the day with such a beautiful group of talented and gracious sportswomen. Coach - Meg Logan
Athletics Carnival Well done to all girls for their spirit and involvement in the carnival held last Thursday. The participation was tremendous and the house spirit and enthusiasm made for a great day. A sincere thank you must go to all staff and House Captains/Representatives who worked very hard to ensure the smooth running of the day and to the students who assisted in any way.

Athletics Squad 2013 The Athletics Squad has been announced and all members of the squad have been given details of the training schedule. Training is well under way and all girls are expected to make several training sessions a week. It is strongly encouraged for athletes to attend the Tuesday afternoon session at QEII. A bus will transport the girls to and from the stadium. The first QE11 training sessions begin Tuesday 23 July. The Lead Up Series of Athletic Meets are on the following afternoons: Friday 26 July and 2 August and Monday 12 August. All Athletes need to attend at least two Athletic Meets. A bus will take the girls to UQ Athletics Centre, Sir William MacGregor Drive, ST LUCIA. Competitors will need to be collected at the venue after the meet. The meet will start at 4.00pm and finish at approximately 6.00pm. For the meets to run successfully Loreto College would appreciate some parent help. They will be challenged to think critically about global issues through hearing from leading thinkers and engaging in group discussions. The program involves a five-day camp (Sunday 24th – Thursday 28th November) and a YSP Reunion at UQ Open Day (Sunday 3rd August 2014). There are a number of criteria to meet eligibility, so if interested, please apply/visit: www.uq.edu.au/youngscholars. Applications including supporting documentation must be received by UQ by 5pm on Friday 9 August 2013 and late applications will not be considered. The University of Queensland, Queensland University of Technology, and Griffith all run advanced university entry programs giving academically successful students the opportunity to study a university subject during their final year of school.
