Dear Parents & Students
Despite the chill of winter, I “warmly” welcome you all to Term Three. I particularly welcome our visiting students from Japan who will be with us this week. We also have two French students visiting us for a few weeks so I extend to them a warm welcome to Australia and to the Loreto community.
This term we welcome back from leave the following staff: Mrs Ashton, Mr Deveson, Mrs Kearney, Ms Tilly and Mrs van den Brink. Joining us for a few weeks we also have Mrs Dowling, Mrs Sampford and Mr Willis. We also welcome home our Japan Trip travellers who all had a most wonderful time visiting Kanagawa Gakuen School in Yokohama over the holidays.
During the coming three weeks, whilst Mr Pat Elsworthy is on leave, Mr Matt Lourigan will be the Acting Deputy Principal – Curriculum and Ms Rachel Cody will be the Acting Science Coordinator. Also, during Mrs Chris Cuskelly’s leave this term, Ms Christine Rynne will be the Acting Workplace Learning Coordinator.
COLLEGE MASS The Semester Two College Mass will be held next Thursday, 31 July in the Mary Ward Centre at 11.00am. I extend to parents an invitation to join us if you are able to do so. As part of our “Catholic Week” celebrations we will once again have with us some very special visitors: Loreto Past Pupils who graduated from the College 50 years or more ago have been invited to attend and to share lunch and a chat afterwards with some of our Year 8 and Year 12 students. I am delighted to know how much this event is now looked forward to and thank the students in anticipation for their interest and enthusiasm and for making these special visitors so very welcome.
YEAR 12 FORMAL I congratulate and thank the Year 12’s on the great success of their very special ‘night of nights’. It was a delightful occasion. It is always such a wonderful privilege to be present and to celebrate this special event with the girls whose sense of excitement and joy is as contagious as it is delightful. Special thanks go to Ms Diamond and the formal committee for all their careful planning, organisation and efforts.

SR TRISH FRANKLIN IBVM On Thursday we welcome Sr Trish Franklin IBVM back to Loreto Coorparoo. Sr Trish has devoted almost 30 years to serving impoverished communities of children in Vietnam and South East Asia. In 2005, Sr Trish was awarded the Order of Australia for service in the field of international humanitarian relief and to children in South East Asia. Sr Trish will spend time sharing her remarkable story with students in a number of Year levels. We thank her for making precious time to be with us. (Visit: www.loretovietnam.org)
CONGRATULATIONS
To both Kokoda Challenge teams, on successfully completing this year’s endurance challenge held over the weekend. In total, the two teams raised over $3790 between them to support Australian Youth in need. This is the first time Loreto has participated in the event and both teams can be especially proud and pleased with their results after months of training and commitment. Special thanks to the support crew for their vital efforts too. Particular thanks go to their enthusiastic Coordinator Mr Alan Lane-Richardson and also to staff members Mr Corrado, Ms Davidson and Mrs Matheson. Well done and congratulations to all involved.

Brisbane City Council - School Parking Monitoring The College has been advised by the Brisbane City Council that they will be continuing to monitor parking behaviour around the College during Term 3. In the letter that we have received, the BCC advises: “The primary purpose for parking enforcement around schools is to ensure child safety. While it is certainly not Council’s intention to make parking near schools an overly onerous task, regulating parking activities is necessary to promote safe driving practices during pick up and drop off times. Over the next school term, Council officers will be attending school zones to ensure safe parking practices. Parking fines may be issued in cases where illegal parking practices are observed.” If parents would like to learn more about parking legally, Council encourages you to visit the web site at www.brisbane.gov.au/ traffic-transport/parking-permits/parking-rules As always, the College encourages parents and others parking around the College to observe all restrictions and to drive safely. Curriculum Issues I would like to welcome all of our students back after a well-earned break and I look forward to the upcoming parent/student/ teacher interview day. The occasion is a great opportunity to strengthen the vital partnership between families and teachers to ensure our girls grow as students in a caring, cooperative and supportive College Community. Term 3 promises to be a busy time with some important decisions to be made by our Year 8s and Year 10s in terms of their elective subjects in 2015 and beyond. Our Year 9 students will continue to “test the waters” in their studies to gain a clearer picture of where their strengths and interests lie while our senior girls will, I am sure, be determined to consolidate their achievements and develop further towards their personal aspirations. Music Department Open Day On Sunday 10 August the College holds its annual Open Day. Each year, the Music Department runs a display highlighting the performance-based nature of our Year 7/8 curriculum. The display is hosted by volunteers from the Year 9/10 music classes. During class time in the coming weeks, Mr Langford will be asking students in these classes to volunteer to assist with these displays. Music Extension Performers Our concert at the Casa D’amore Retirement Village is this Sunday 27 July! Students are asked to meet between 12:45 pm and 1.00 pm at the venue (Park St, Coorparoo, maps available at: http://www.casadamore.com.au/). The concert will run from 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm and students will be free to leave by 2:45 pm. Crazy for You DVDs Have arrived and can be collected from the Music Office. Mr Smith’s Composition This Thursday 24 July we will be taking all students in the Year 9 and 10 music classes to see a concert by the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. “Mr Smith’s Composition” is a narrated journey that will take the students through composing a masterpiece, and learning how the instruments of the orchestra transform the notes on the page into the music we hear. Music Support Group The Music Support Group is a fantastic group of parents who help at concerts (canteen, raffles), run social events (Trivia Night, Live & Wired Music Festival) and fundraise (Mega-raffle, Bar at concerts) to support Music Tuition Scholarships. The group’s next meeting on this Wednesday 23 July is our AGM. At this meeting we will farewell our President, Mrs Jenny Hunter, and one of our Secretaries, Mrs Caroline Fernandes, as their daughters both graduate this year. We would like to thank them sincerely for their efforts on behalf of the music students. While the group as a whole is incredibly supportive and always willing to help with all tasks, it is still important to have parents to fill these vital executive positions. Year 10 Camp Year 10 Camp is being held during Week One of Term 4. Loreto has had a long relationship with our camp providers, Meebunbia, who have merged with Camp Kokoda operating near Lake Maroon. Information and Medical Forms will be distributed next week. In preparation for the camp, we would encourage students to actively engage in regular physical activity as the three day program does involve walking between campsites and other forms of physical activity. Parents may also wish to organise a tetnus booster if this is not current. Debating Good luck to our Junior debating teams who compete in Round 1 of the Finals tomorrow night. 8.2 are at BGGS at 7pm, 9.1 are at St Laurence’s College at 8.15pm and our 10.1 and 10.2 teams are at Churchie at 8.15pm. Our Year 11 and 12 teams don’t have their next debate until next week. The Finals rounds are knock-out debates, so once a team loses, their season is over for the year. The debates are also weekly, so there is a bit of pressure on our debaters and their coaches! Mr McKinlay - Debating Co-ordinator
Co-Curricular Music Loreto Music Festival In the last week of Term Two, the Mary Ward Centre hosted the Bandslam Final and LMF Finals Concert, two great fun and extremely high quality events. Congratulations to all students who entered the Loreto Music Festival, whether at the Heat stage, Finals concert or as a Section Winner you performed with skill and enthusiasm to make this year’s Festival another great success! In an extremely tight finish, and with a score of 950 points the House Trophy went to Mullhall (by a margin of 20 points). This is the fourth time in the Festival’s 13 year history (and the first since 2008) that Mulhall has lifted the coveted Perpetual Trophy for the Champion House. I would particularly like to thank the senior students from the Music Council who did such an efficient and professional job of both compering and running backstage on the night – Abbey Martin, Meg Ingram, Renita Fernandes, Brigid Kelly, Stephanie Moloney, Vania So, Caitlin Hunter & Sophie Dibley. Sunday 10 August Big Band, Sorelle, Junior Choir, Percussion Ensemble One On Sunday 10 August the College holds its annual Open Day and several music groups will perform on stage or in “open” rehearsals during the morning. More information to come! QCMF ALL ENSEMBLES From Thursday 14 August - Sunday 17 August, Villanova College will host the annual Catholic Colleges’ Music Festival. Each year, ALL Loreto ensembles (except beginner brass and strings) enter this event. The festival is an important event in our Performance Calendar that we take very seriously and is one of our three compulsory performances for the year (along with the Autumn Concerts and Live & Wired/Music Night). It is our expectation that ALL students in our ensembles make themselves available for whatever performance times we are given by the Festival (published in the last newsletter of last term and again in this newsletter). If you have any clashes, please contact me at the school urgently. Sunday 24 August Concert Band One, String Ensemble, Beginner Brass & Strings, selected Guitar and Vocal students Each year, as a service to students from the local primary schools, Loreto College organises and runs a day-long Primary Music Camp in the Mary Ward Centre. Loreto staff conduct a variety of music groups and Loreto students act as tutors and section leaders throughout the day. The camp finishes with a short concert, at which some of the Loreto groups perform. Please keep an eye out for full details, which will appear in the newsletter as soon as they are available. Thursday 28 & Friday 29 August Private music students On these two dates we will run the Term Three Lunchtime Music Recitals for students who would enjoy the opportunity to perform in an informal public concert. Extended Rehearsals Due to the many disruptions to rehearsal times this term (and the public nature of so many of our performances) it is our practice to extend a some rehearsals (eg. afternoon rehearsals finishing at 5:30 pm) in weeks two and three. Students will be informed in their regular rehearsals this week if this is to be the case for their particular ensemble. The first of these extended rehearsals will be for Exit Stage Left next Tuesday 29 July. This day is the Parent/Teacher Interviews day so the rehearsal will run from 8 am to 9:45 am. Looking for Oboe Students The school has two oboes that are presently not being used. If there are any students who might be interested in trying out this beautiful sounding instrument, see Mr Langford as we would lend the oboes out free of charge to students who organised either shared or individual lessons. Why not come along with a friend? Touch Football 2014 Welcome to the 2014 season! This year Loreto is trialling playing in the BMTA Thursday night Junior Club competition at Boundary Road, White’s Hill. All teams will train on a Monday morning before school at Annerley Junior Football Club fields, corner Victoria Terrace and Baron Street, Greenslopes. Please note that players are to arrive at training before 6.45am (own transport) and a bus will transport them to the College at 8.00am. On game night, players are to assemble at the playing field at White’s Hill complex 40 minutes prior to the scheduled playing time. Transport to and from the game is the responsibility of each player. All players will be given a permission letter to participate and signed consent is to be returned by this Friday 25 July. Athletics Squad The Athletics Squad for 2014 has been announced and all members have been given details of the training schedule. Training is well under way and all girls are expected to make several training sessions a week. The girls who have been selected have been emailed and sent a Athletics Booklet with the details provided. It is strongly encouraged for athletes to attend the Tuesday afternoon session at QEII. A bus will transport the girls to and from the stadium. The QE11 training sessions begin Tuesday 29 July 2014. The Lead Up Series of Athletic Meets are on the following afternoons: Friday 25 July, Friday 1 August and Monday 11 and 18 August 2014. All Athletes need to attend at least two Athletic Meets. A bus will take the girls to UQ Athletics Centre, Sir William MacGregor Drive, ST LUCIA. Competitors will need to be collected at the venue after the meet. The meet will start at 4.00pm and finish at approximately 6.00pm. For the meets to run successfully Loreto College would appreciate some parent help. 125 Years of Loreto in Melbourne Loreto Mandeville Hall Toorak is celebrating 125 years since the foundation of the first Loreto School in Melbourne. To mark this special year, A row of Goodly Pearls, One Hundred and Twenty-five Years of Loreto in Melbourne, has been written by professional historian Jane Mayo Carolan. It is an intriguing history from 1889 covering many stories of kindergarten, primary, secondary and tertiary education for young women and men. From their first Australian foundation in Ballarat, the following Loreto schools were established in Melbourne: Our Lady of the Angels, Albert Park (1889), Saints Peter and Paul’s School, South Melbourne (1891), Central Catholic [Teachers’] Training College, Albert Park (1906), Loreto Free Kindergarten, South Melbourne (1912) and the Loreto Commercial College, South Melbourne (1963). The two remaining Loreto Institutions in Melbourne – Loreto Toorak (established in 1924) and St Mary’s College (formerly Hall) at the University of Melbourne (established in 1918), now carry the traditions and aspirations of the first group of women who challenged the norm and founded their inner city establishments. These inspirational women were joined along the way by many past pupils who assisted in the development of the Loreto spirit in Melbourne. eÉuçÇ XÅxÜáÉÇ St Ignatius parishioner Robyn Emerson is a science journalist and speech writer who works in communications at Brisbane City Council. A mother of two young adults, she is currently studying a research degree in Creative Writing and is working on a children's book. Tonight she introduces:
VÄtÜx fâÄàÅtÇÇM fâÄàÅtÇÇ Clare Sultmann’s life changed on a crisp Sydney winter morning in 2000. The then 23 year old business and law graduate was hit by a truck as she was on her morning run through Bondi. Her injuries were horrific and she spent the next decade trying to regain her independence, including the painful process of learning to walk again. The former All Hallows’ schoolgirl also was on a quest to find meaning in what happened. Clare’s autobiographical account of those years “Standing On My Own Two Feet” gives an insight into that journey. A barrister, wife and mother of two boys, Clare lives in Noosa and continues ongoing rehabilitation.
WÜ `tÜçtÇÇx _Éâz{Üç ÜáÅM ÜáÅM Maryanne Loughry is a psychologist who specialises in the medical effects of trauma on refugees. She spends part of the year teaching at Oxford and Boston and recently returned from working with refugees in Syria. An Australian Sister of Mercy and the assistant director of the Jesuit Refugee Service, Maryanne Loughry is a member of the Government's advisory council on asylum seekers. She was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 2010 for service to refugees.
ltáÅ|Ç ^{tÇM Yasmin Khan is a cane farmers’ daughter, born and bred in Far North Queensland. A mixture of Indo-Pakistani and British heritage, her family has lived in Australia for 150 years. Yasmin has been a long term Muslim community activist and spokesperson. She is the founder and president of Queensland Eidfest, a festival held to celebrate the end of Ramadhan. Yasmin has regular appearances on the ABC and 4BC, speaking on a variety of topics, from spirituality to sport, including her lifelong love of cricket.
