Volume 32- 21 October, 2014 Dear Parents and Students It is with great pleasure I proclaim that “Cruci” is now officially open and that the Year 11 homeclasses will move into this wonderful learning space this week to enable us time to prepare the “Mulwith” building for Year 7 occupancy next year. On Sunday many visitors joined us for the Opening, the Art Show and Live & Wired. It was simply a wonderful occasion to have so many people here celebrating with us and joining in the fun and festivities. I congratulate the students particularly on their fine musical performances and their creative works of Art. Thank you also to the many staff and parent volunteers who helped to make Sunday such a fabulous community experience. I wish to thank Sr Margaret Mary Flynn IBVM - Province Leader of Australia and South East Asia, and Fr Paul Sireh - Parish Priest of Mt Carmel - for opening and blessing our new building. This wonderful new educational space is the end result of a journey which commenced in 2011. It is the product of genuine collaboration and a shared vision. On behalf of our community, especially the students who will benefit from such an intentional and welcoming learning environment, I extend my appreciation to the many who worked so diligently to bring the first stage of our Master Plan to fruition. Long Tan Leadership and Teamwork Awards 2014 Each year, the Commonwealth Government Defence Department presents awards to Australian students in Year 10 and Year 12 who have exemplified qualities of leadership, teamwork, strong values, problem solving skills, resourcefulness, community involvement, cooperation and communication skills. The awards are in recognition of the qualities demonstrated by our service personnel during the battle of Long Tan in the Vietnam War. This year we are pleased to announce that two of our students are recipients of these awards: Austen Whitewood (Year 10); Georgia Klinakis (Year 12). Both students were presented with certificates and monetary prizes of $250 and $550 respectively. The citation for Austen commented upon her clarity of communication, efficient resolution of problems, supportiveness of her peers, her involvement in the Kokoda Challenge and her extensive involvement in Debating, Public Speaking and the musical life of the College. The citation for Georgia noted Georgia’s significant contribution to the College as Ward House Captain, her effective communication skills, her unfailing support for her peers and her impressive fund-raising activities on behalf of Multiple Sclerosis research, a personal endeavour that raised $8500. We congratulate these fine young women on achieving these awards.
Queensland History Teachers’ Essay Competition 2014 We are pleased to announce that Anandi Padhee of Year 12 has won the Queensland History Teachers’ Essay competition for 2014. This is a most prestigious competition attracting essays of the very highest calibre from schools across the State. Anandi’s essay was entitled: “A Menacing Shadow: The Queensland Native Police as de jure agents of the State in the violent subjugation of Indigenous People.” Her investigation of this dark period of 19 th C. Queensland colonial history involved a detailed research of mainly primary sources that confirmed her view that the establishment of the Native Police force allowed “lawful” acts of violence to be perpetrated upon Indigenous people across the State. Anandi received a Certificate and a monetary prize of $150 for her achievement and her essay will be published in the Queensland History Teachers’ Journal and in the Loreto College magazine for 2014. In the same competition, Greta Carlson was awarded Highly Commended for her excellent essay, entitled: “Queensland Aboriginal Protection Policies of the 20th C.” in which she argued that the idea of “Protection” was simply a euphemism used to describe the self-serving power that European settlers assumed over the lives of Aboriginal people. We congratulate both Anandi and Greta as well as our third entrant in the competition, D’Arcy Ertel, whose essay on the 1967 Referendum was outstanding and worthy of entry in the competition. Congratulations also to Mrs Valentine and Mr McAlinden who mentored the students through this exercise.

The Loreto College Tuckshop is now cashless! As was mentioned last term, the Loreto College Tuckshop is now cashless. If you have not yet setup an account for your daughter and she wishes to use the tuckshop, please set up a Flexischools account by going to www.flexischools.com.au and following the instructions.
Some students have had some small issues but these are generally due to some minor errors that occurred when the Flexischools account and card were first set up. If you are setting up an account for the first time, or your daughter has had some issues, we have some hints for you on how to fix these. 1.
Ensure you link your daughter’s Loreto ID card to the account you have set up. When you link the card number you must use your daughter’s student number which begins with an ‘s’ for student eg. s1477323. Please use a lower case ‘s’ at the beginning of the student ID number.

If you set a daily cash limit on this account your daughter will not be able to purchase anything that goes over this limit. You may like to review the tuckshop menu before you set this limit. If you do an online order this limit does not apply.
3.
There also needs to be sufficient funds in your Flexischools’ account if your daughter is to be able to buy from the tuckshop. You may consider enabling an auto top on your account once it reaches a certain level to alleviate this problem.

Music News The Lion King The Year 12 excursion to see this amazing stage production is this week - Wednesday 22 October. Students will be given their tickets during class on either Tuesday or Wednesday. While supervision by Loreto Staff is provided at the actual venue, transport to and from the performance needs to be organised by the students and their parents. All students should meet Mrs Nielson near the Cloak Room of the Lyric Theatre by 7:40 pm on Wednesday night and parents should please be ready to collect their daughters by 10.45pm. Art Department This weekend we celebrated the creativity of our Art Students at the Loreto Art Show. The works displayed reflected the diversity of concepts and media explored throughout the year. It was a wonderful opportunity for family and friends to enjoy the achievements of our students. Our new Art Show banner featured the work of Year 12 student Melanie Klinakis. Year 9 ‘Seed’ Day The Year 9 ‘SEED’ Day was very educational, enabling many students to learn the importance of self-worth, self esteem, friendship and assertive behaviours. Catherine was our supervisor for the day; she was very bubbly and fun which made us feel very comfortable. She educated us in many ways: craft activities, role plays and PowerPoint presentations. We each made a deep pocket, which held what we collected throughout the day including a very special friendship bracelet and friendship affirmations . At the end of the day we took the sisterhood pledge, promising each other we would be there for one another and always be kind to one another. Overall, I really enjoyed the day due to the friendly atmosphere. Brooke Della 9 Blue
Music News Ensemble Auditions Auditions for places in 2015 Music Ensembles will be held in the Mary Ward Centre this Sunday 26 October between 9 am and 1 pm. Audition times have been published and set repertoire for students auditioning for Sorelle, Exit Stage Left, Big Band, Chorale, Percussion & Guitar is also available for all singers and rhythm section players (collect from the Music Office and don’t forget to download the backing & demo tracks from the Student Common drive). A Huge Thanks! Must go to all parents, students and staff who were involved in last Sunday’s Live & Wired Music Festival. The standard of performance from all groups was outstanding, as was the enthusiastic atmosphere created by the large crowd. I would especially like to thank the College’s facilities staff, the parents of the Music Support Group, P & F and Sport Support Group, AND quite a large number of student volunteers, who set everything up at 10 am, staffed the various stalls and games throughout the afternoon, then stayed around to pack up until 7:30 pm or so that night. It was a true community effort to make the 5th annual Live & Wired Music Festival a fantastic event! 2015 Scholarship and Private Tuition Forms Please ignore the upcoming return dates that have been in the school calendars for these two forms. The Scholarship and Private Tuition Forms will be available very soon with new return dates. Villanova Big Event Yesterday’s full day rehearsal really saw this show start to come together and I am sure all the students involved are now starting to get excited! Don’t forget that the Senior Choir rehearsal in week 5 will be on Monday 3 November INSTEAD of your regular Tuesday rehearsal on 4 November. Public Speaking Last night was the first evening of the ESU Competition. Loreto had three Year 8 students present. They were Kaitlin Carey, Lisa Gorse and Morgan O’Neill. All girls spoke very well, engaging the audience with their words and manner. Their feedback was very positive and encouraging for our future speakers. Lisa Gorse and Morgan O’Neill were chosen to go through to the Finals on November 3. Congratulations to all three girls! TERM 4 Water Polo / Swim Squad Training All girls are invited to attend swim training sessions for the Water polo swim session as well as Swim Squad training at the Loreto pool in preparation for the 2014 season. These sessions are held on Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning from 6.30am to 7.45am. Please register at the sports notice board. There is no cost for the swim sessions. Queensland Junior Schools’ Cup Volleyball Report IG 2 Year 10 The Loreto Intermediate Volleyball team played in the Queensland Volleyball Schools Cup last weekend and showed a bright future for volleyball at Loreto. Despite an initial loss, the girls upped their game for the next few matches and played brilliant 3-hit volleyball to get 2nd place in their pool and 10th in the tournament. The positive attitude and team spirit demonstrated by all players was great to see and led to an enjoyable and memorable event. I know that the girls are disappointed with the result, but they improved tremendously throughout the competition and should be very proud of what they achieved. On behalf of the team, I would like to thank our coach Zac for all his hard work and determination, Mrs Stevens for supervising our games, parents who came along to support. In particular, I would like to thank Mrs Gore for making this opportunity possible and taking time out of her weekend to watch three volleyball teams compete in the tournament. Great job girls! JG 2 Year 9 Over the weekend Year 9 (JG 2 Team) participated in the Junior Volleyball Schools Cup at Redlands College. We played in a series of games that were intense; however, we rose to the occasion, stuck to our game plan and won some exciting games. We placed second in our pool but came fifth overall. We played really well and showed sportsmanship to other teams. We would like to say a big thankyou to Mrs Gold for giving up her weekend and for coaching us and also to Mrs Gore who came out to support us. Tiaan Smith
JG 3 Year 8/9 On the weekend six Year 8’s and four Year 9’s combined together to form the JG3 Volleyball team to compete at the QLD Junior Schools Cup competition. It was a fantastic experience for all girls involved, with the competition standard very high. The girls won two of their pool matches to finish 4th in their poo. This placed them in the playoff for 7th and 8th. They played Brisbane State High in a tight fought match to narrowly lose the game to place 8th overall. Well done to all girls for their spirited play over the weekend and to Stephanie Esprester for coaching this team.
Carina Parish Youth Announcements Our Lady of Graces parish at Carina holds a youth Mass every Sunday evening at 5:30pm to which Loreto girls are very welcome. In addition to this, we have created a Carina Catholic Youth Facebook page where we post the most recent and upcoming information about the parish. We promote events through Facebook such as Feast Fun Faith, Bowling Night, Advent Adventures, Youth Mass, and buses from our parish to Ignite Youth events and The Blue. The parish has also created Coffee Club Christians. Coffee Club Christians will be held every week on Thursday Afternoons from 3:30pm - 4:30pm in the 2nd floor Coffee Club at Carindale shopping centre. We would like to extend an invitation to Year 11 and 12 students to attend this youth group. Coffee Club Christians is a group of young people who have formed together in faith to catch up after school or university for coffee and friendship. This group aims to break away from the business of the week and take time to reconnect with Jesus and one another. Come and hang out with local teens and meet new people! BOOKLIST - 2015 Loreto College book orders are to be placed on-line. Please go to the Symons Website: www.symondsed.com.au and follow the prompts. Our school code is LOR01 (LORZERO1). Orders can be placed from Wednesday 22 October 2014. When ordering on-line, payment must be made by credit card and will be processed immediately. ORDERS MUST BE PLACED ON-LINE BY: Tuesday 2 December 2014 You will receive a confirmation email once your order has been placed. Should you not receive confirmation and an Order Reference Number, please contact Symons Educational Supplies on info@symonsed.com.au, as your order has not been received.

Should any item be discontinued by the suppliers, the amount will be deducted from your booklist and your invoice will show the CORRECT amount to be paid. Damaged items must be returned to Symons Educational Supplies no later than Tuesday 31 March 2015 with your daughter’s name, class and pre-pack number (refer to your invoice). Please order carefully as we do not accept returns for incorrect ordering. Prices on your booklist are correct at the date of printing and are subject to change by the distributor.
LATE ORDERS will be delivered to Loreto College at the earliest convenience. However, there is no guarantee it will arrive before school begins. Please place your order on time to ensure your daughter(s) will start the year with the correct text books and stationery.
