Welcome back to Term 3! I hope the holidays have been a relaxing and refreshing time for both students and families. I am sure the girls were particularly glad to be able to sleep in on those chilly mornings last week. I hope also there was opportunity for reflection on the achievements and disappointments of Semester 1 and that the girls begin Term 3 with focus and determination. The planets have been prominent in both our skies and the news in recent weeks. The recent views of Pluto sent by NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft have captured the imagination of the world. The delight and amazement of the scientists who have been working on this project for many years has revealed their passion for uncovering knowledge as well as their experience of joy and reward when hard, ambitious, long-term work finally came to fruition. They are inspiring. I have also been entranced, like many others, at the brilliance and interplay of Venus and Jupiter in the western sky each evening. This has somehow provided a fitting backdrop to the debate which followed the recent release by Pope Francis of his Encyclical, “Laudato Si, on the care of our common home”, which addresses the relationship between humankind and creation and our response to the many complex environmental issues we face today. Translated in English as "Praised Be," the title of the Encyclical is a quotation from a popular prayer of St Francis of Assisi praising God for the creation of the different creatures and aspects of the Earth. I offer the following two passages for your reflection.
Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory in the heavens. Through the praise of children and infants you have established a stronghold against your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger.

DRAMA TRIP
The Loreto Drama trip to Sydney in the first week of the holidays was a wonderful success, packed with workshops and performances to enrich and extend our Year 11 and 12 Drama students. Thank you to the staff who organized the trip and accompanied the girls: Ms Stephanie Coleman, Mrs Lissa Gyte, Mrs Rosemary O’Neill and Mrs Meg Logan. YEAR 12 FORMAL Congratulations to the elegant and sophisticated young women of Year 12 who looked magnificent and celebrated with style and grace at their Formal on Saturday night. The strength of their relationships with each other, their families and the College was wonderful to see. Congratulations also to Ms Annie Diamond, Mrs Rosemary O’Neill, the Year 12 Homeroom Teachers and the student Formal Committee whose careful organization ensured the evening was a success. KOKODA CHALLENGE Our students certainly embrace a wide range of experiences and opportunities! While the Year 12’s were socializing in style at the Hilton on Saturday night, 16 Year 10 and 11 girls and five staff were hiking 48 kilometres through mountainous rainforest in freezing conditions as part of the 2015 Kokoda Challenge. This impressive achievement is the result of many months of training combined with great personal determination and courage. We thank Mr Alan Lane-Richardson for his overall organization for this event as well as Ms Christine Rynne, Ms Elizabeth Gaber, Miss Stephanie Nolan and Ms Michelle Davidson who trained and walked with the girls. STAFF NEWS We warmly welcome to the College Mrs Tamsyn Freeman who will be teaching Home Economics and Hospitality while Mrs Inger is on Maternity Leave and Ms Aruni Arachchige who will be replacing Mr McKinlay in the Maths Department for the remainder of the year. We also welcome back Mr McAlinden, Mrs Ward, Mr Langford and Mrs Little from their Leave in Term 2. For the first two weeks of Term 3, we are delighted that Dr Irmer and Mr Kenny are interrupting their retirement and re-joining us to take Mr Swanson’s classes while he is in America. Parent Teacher interviews will be held next week. This is a very good opportunity for parents to meet with their daughter’s teachers to discuss their progress and any issues that may have become apparent after Semester 1. The interviews will be held on Tuesday 28 July. This is a student free day and the interviews commence at 10am. There are four sessions during the day: Session 1: 10.00am to 12.06pm Session 2: 12.54pm to 3.00pm Session 3: 3.22pm to 5.00pm Session 4: 5.47pm to 8.00pm The interviews will be of 7 minutes duration and bookings can be made on Parent Lounge on the College website. Parents will require their user name and password to access Parent Lounge. Mr Gavin Swanson, Mrs Maree Inger, Mrs Jan Findlay, Ms Louise Tilley and Mrs Marie Shaw will not be available on this day. Please phone the College if you wish to speak to these teachers or the Curriculum Leader for the subject.
The Year 10 Subject Selection process will commence on Monday 7 August. There will be a Parent Information Evening commencing at 7pm in the Mary Ward Centre. This will be followed by Parent/Student SET Plan interviews on Thursday 6 August, Friday 7 August and Thursday 13 August. Further details will be sent home to parents. This is an important step in selecting an appropriate pathway for students and I am looking forward to the opportunity to meeting parents and discussing the various opportunities that exist for our students. Art News Year Eight Art students have “made their mark�. Students investigated shape and pattern as they developed images of personal significance which were then screen printed onto calico carry bags. This process not only requires students to be imaginative, creative and innovative, it also demanded persistence as they strove to accurately cut stencils and skilfully print images. Performing Arts During the first week of the school holidays, twenty-nine Year 11 and 12 Drama students travelled to Sydney to partake in the first Loreto College Drama Tour. Over the five days the girls participated in a variety of workshops, attended live theatre, visited television and radio studios and soaked up all that Sydney’s Arts scene has to offer. Highlights included a workshop at NIDA, being in the live studio audience for the taping of Studio 10, seeing Les Misérables at Capitol Theatre and a tour of Sydney Theatre Company. It became clear that there are a wide range of careers available in the Arts and the exposure the girls had to inspirational professionals who are experts in their field opened their eyes to the possibilities of combining a love of Drama with other skills such as business, production, design, technology and marketing. Despite the fact it was a very busy five days, the girls thoroughly enjoyed themselves and have memories that will last throughout their lifetime. They are to be commended on their excellent behaviour and their enthusiastic participation in every activity. The Drama staff look forward to the girls bringing this inspiration to their Semester 2 work. I would also like to offer a sincere thank you to Mrs Lissa Gyte, Mrs Meg Logan and Mrs Rosemary O’Neill for all their hard work in ensuring the success of the tour. Year 7 Happenings In the last week of Term 2, the Year 7 cohort participated in a “Gallery Walk” to celebrate the learning that has taken place over the course of s\Semester 1. In small groups the girls were led through a series of displays of Year 7 work. These ranged from religious banners, to sewing pouches, Language projects, History artefacts, Art postcards and interactive maps from the Geography unit. They completed a “See, Think, Wonder” routine to identify points of difference and similarity in the thinking and learning that takes place in each curriculum area. Below you can see the types of work that were on display. The girls participated wholeheartedly in this activity and their ability to identify and verbalise their thoughts was impressive. They were rewarded by a food tasting session supplied by the wonderful teachers in the Language Department! Their work will be on display again for Open Day on 9 August. Music News Upcoming Performances The Music Department has quite a number of performances coming up in the month of August. I will publish all details as soon as they are available but please check back each newsletter to keep on top of any changes! Catholic Colleges Music Festival Performance times for all Loreto Ensembles are published later in this newsletter. QCMF is one of our three compulsory performances for each year (along with the Autumn Concert and Music Night/Live & Wired) so it is our expectation that all students will attend at the published times. If you have any difficulties, eg clashes with other commitments, please contact Mr Langford urgently to negotiate a suitable solution. Mount Carmel Fete & Open Day Over the next two weekends our Big Band, Sorelle and Exit Stage Left will perform at these two weekend events. Some of the timings are still being finalised for these commitments but I will contact students with details of this as soon as possible this week, then publish all information in next week’s newsletter. I understand that this is fairly late notice of specifics but if members could please try to keep the relevant days free, that would be much appreciated! (Mount Carmel Fete – Sunday 2 August, approx. between 10am to 1pm; Loreto Open Day – Sunday 9 August, AM). Primary Music Camp Each year (in 2015 Sunday 23 August is the date), Loreto College and our music students host a very popular Music Camp for primary students of local schools. The event is extremely well attended by more than 80 students from upwards of 20 different schools! On the day students play with and tutor 2 concert bands, 1-2 string ensembles, a guitar ensemble and a choir, before hosting a concert for these groups. Could all members of Concert Band One, Guitar Ensemble One, Senior Choir and Chamber Strings/String Ensemble please expect to make themselves available at some stage during the day to either tutor a session, or to perform in the afternoon concert (approximately 3pm to 4pm). The Primary Music Camp is an important and inspiring service our girls provide for the younger students, who frequently return to the camp year after year, whether or not they are intending to come to Loreto for secondary school. String Lessons/Ensembles We would like to thank Mr Yuri Djachenko for stepping in at late notice part way through Term 2 to cover string lessons and rehearsals for the remainder of that semester. Unfortunately, due to the demands of his already extensive teaching commitments, Yuri is unable to continue at Loreto in Semester 2. We would therefore like to welcome Ms Lucy Sullivan back to Loreto as our String Tutor and Conductor. Lucy is an ex-Loreto student, has conducted ensembles here in the past, and has most recently just returned from 18 months in New York where she set-up and ran an after-school music program for disadvantaged children. Lucy will bring great knowledge and enthusiasm to the string program and we are thrilled that she has returned to Australia at just the right time to work with us again. Ensemble Rehearsals All ensembles will rehearse at normal times this week. With QCMF coming up in just a few weeks it is vital that all students attend. Please note that there will be some changes to rehearsals for week 2 of term, due to the Parent/Teacher Interviews on Tuesday 28 July. On that day Sorelle and Guitar Ensemble 2 will still rehearse but at the later time of 8am to 9:30am. Senior Choir will schedule an alternate rehearsal for one lunchtime to be advised next week. Music Support Group The next monthly meeting and AGM will be held in Cruci this Wednesday 22 July (tomorrow night!). All parents of music students are encouraged to attend. Loreto College Athletics Carnival The Interhouse carnival was a successful day at the University of Queensland track. The 2015 Athletics Squad has been announced and all girls who have been selected have received an email and electronic booklet of training details and competitions. We strongly advise the squad to attend the Tuesday afternoon training session at the State Athletics track at QE11. A bus will transport the girls directly after school to the stadium and return at 5.30pm. This training session will start next week, Tuesday 28 July and the following Tuesdays 4, 11 and 18 August. The lead up series of UQ Athletic Meets will be held at the UQ Athletics track on the following afternoons: Friday 24 July, Friday 31 July, Monday 10 August and Monday 17 August. All athletes are expected to attend at least 2 meets for competition experience and to improve their performances. A bus will transport the squad to UQ Athletics Centre, Sir William MacGregor Drive, St Lucia. The UQ meets will finish around 6.30pm to 7.00pm depending upon the events. Competitors will need to arrange transport home after the Athletics meets. There is no bus returning to school. If any parents are able to assist at the meets can you please note it in the permission form from the booklet and return to the Sports office by Friday 31 July. P&F Year 7 - 10 Dance - Friday 31 July It’s nearly here!! The Loreto School Dance will be held on Friday 31 July at 7.00pm. The theme for the evening is “Neon”. We are inviting our Year 12 girls to attend the dance. This will provide a safe environment for all who attend. The dance will feature a professional DJ, a lot of fun for both students and parents, and we all aim to make it enjoyable and safe. Thank you to all who have already volunteered their time. Security We still require seven more parents to cover security. There are two shifts: 6:30pm - 8:30pm (three parents needed) or 8:30pm - 10:30pm (four parents needed) for crowd control while waiting for tickets and supervising the outside of the hall. The doors of the hall are open for ventilation. Parents are required to stop attendees leaving and others entering. Professional Security Guards will be employed for inside the hall. Parent Forum 26 August If you want to learn more about what the P&F is doing for you, you will have the chance at the second Parent Forum on Wednesday 26 August. This event which was first held last year provides the opportunity for parents to meet with Committee members and find out about the P&F’s activities and plans in a relaxed atmosphere and away from the formality of regular meetings. Those attending will also learn more about the Loreto Master Plan and receive a high level summary of the results of a survey of parents. eÉuçÇ XÅxÜáÉÇ St Ignatius parishioner Robyn Emerson is a science journalist and speech writer who works in communications at Brisbane City Council. A mother of two young adults, she is currently studying a research degree in Creative Writing and is working on a children's book. Tonight she introduces:
]É{tÇÇt ]É {tÇÇt axä|ÄÄxM axä|ÄÄx Jo’s workplace covers a pretty big patch. As Maternal Child Health Team Leader with the Apunipima Cape York Health Council, her ‘office’ stretches across 11 communities from Cairns to Horn Island in the Torres Strait. Jo has worked with families for the last 15 years as both a Midwife and Child health Nurse. From the challenges of timing flights to avoid cyclones in the wet season, to the humbling experience of watching aboriginal people stay strong in the face of adversity, no one day is the same. Her special interest is improving maternal health in Aboriginal communities with a family-centred, home visiting model of care. Based in Cairns, Jo is married and has two young sons.
[xÄxÇ f|ÇvÄt|ÜM f|ÇvÄt|Ü M Helen is one of those people who always wanted to be a teacher. With nurturing, encouraging parents, the mantra she grew up with was that girls should not lose out in the opportunities of education. That defining childhood experience was one of the factors leading to her continuing passion for the education of girls. The eldest of five children, Helen led the way as all her siblings went on to work in education. She has been the principal of Stuartholme School since 2004 and after more than four decades in teaching, Helen is preparing to ‘transition’ into the next chapter of her life.
VtÜÉÄçÇ `tÜà|Ç WxÄxé|ÉM WxÄxé|ÉM Carolyn Martin Delezio has had to endure what no parent should. And she has had to do so twice. Her daughter, Sophie, was badly burned and suffered multiple amputations when a car crashed into her childcare centre. Almost unbelievably, she was hit by a car at a pedestrian crossing three years later. Carolyn and her family have overcome terrible adversity and have managed to do so while offering hope to others. Carolyn channelled some of that ordeal into the creation of the Day of Difference Foundation, a charity dedicated to raising funds for research into pediatric burns and related diseases.

Trekking was central to the formation of Room to Read. In 1998, Microsoft executive John Wood, on a trek in Nepal met a teacher who invited him to a school. John was confronted with the harsh reality of education in rural Nepal. The headmaster spoke the nine words that would forever change John’s life: “Perhaps, Sir, you will someday come back with books.” John returned to Nepal the following year, with a train of 8 donkeys bearing 37 boxes of books. What started as one man’s efforts to provide books to a rural community is now Room to Read, a global organisation transforming the lives of millions of children in ten countries in the developing world, by focusing on literacy and gender equality in education.
