This weekend marks the 100th anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli. Together we pray . . . God of all peoples, you desire that we live together in peace. We remember in sorrow those many people who died or suffered greatly in the First World War. Bring them all, from their many countries, to their true homeland of Heaven. God of love, justice and peace, with sorrowful hearts we bring our prayers to you: For your Church; may your people always be witnesses to peace and workers for peace; For those who lead countries; help them to reject war and other forms of violence as ways of solving problems; For those who suffer because they work for peace. Strengthen them, console them through the support of others;
For those who are suffering through warfare today. May their dignity and their rights be restored through the work of peacemakers; For the victims of the First World War and all wars. Bring them all into your kingdom of joy. Father, thank you for hearing our prayers. We make them through the Prince of Peace, your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.
LORETO FEDERATION It was my pleasure last weekend to attend Loreto Federation in Ballarat. I was joined by our Chair of Council, Diane Bukowski and staff members Anthea Newcombe, Anna Nielson and Marie Shaw. Others attending from the Loreto Coorparoo Community included Srs Anne Kelly and Zita O’Donohue, our Past Pupils’ President Martine Whitton, and Mary Clarke, Edwina Clarke, Fiona Clarke and Virginia Morgan. Loreto Federation is a National gathering of Loreto Alumni, friends, staff and families from all Loreto schools which is held every three to five years. With “Verity” as our focus for the year, the theme of this year’s conference was “Dare to be True”. There were over 350 delegates in attendance, including Loreto’s global Institute Leader Sr Noelle Corscadden and members of her leadership team from Rome, making it a remarkable event of which to be a part. The notion of the Loreto Alumni “Federating” was first proposed by the magnificent Mother Gonzaga Barry in order that Loreto Past Pupils could continue, well beyond their school years, to gather in the spirit of Mary Ward to explore issues of local, national and global significance to stimulate ongoing thought, prayer and social justice action. This remarkable woman had a vision of bringing together women and men, steeped in the tradition of Mary Ward, to ‘seek truth and do justice’ in order that we might make a difference for good.

Some issues explored at this year’s event included: the IBVM stance against human trafficking; empowerment of girls and women; support for asylum seekers and refugees; the works of Mary Ward International; and domestic violence against women. It was inspiring to hear from Loreto Past Pupils, young and old alike who are actively working in these areas using their skills as scientists, journalists, activists, educationalists, lawyers, politicians, economists and social leaders to make a difference. WELCOME We welcome the following new staff to Loreto this term: Mr David Grimes (History), Mrs Libby Davies (Home Economics) and Mrs Dianne Bush (Science Laboratory Aide). We hope that their time with us will be rewarding and enjoyable. PARENT / STUDENT / HOME ROOM TEACHER INTERVIEWS On Tuesday 5 May we will be conducting interviews for each student and her parent/s with one of her Homeroom teachers. The purpose of this interview is to reflect on the student’s progress and to make positive and practical plans for the future. The interviews will have a slightly different focus depending on the student’s Year Level, eg Year 7’s and 8’s will reflect on the process of settling into secondary school and Year 11’s on their adjustment to senior schooling. The Year 10 interviews will begin to focus on the development of each student’s Senior Education Training Plan. Letters, Interim Reports and instructions for booking interview times on-line via Parent Lounge were distributed to students or posted to each family at the end of last Term. Please email Mrs Robyn McKeon mckeonr@loreto.qld.edu.au or telephone the school office as soon as possible if this material has not arrived. Interviews will be conducted between 1.30 pm and 6.30 pm and will be for approximately 15 minutes. Classes will conclude at 12.35 pm. Students may go home or be supervised at school until 3.20pm. This interview is in addition to the Parent/ Student/Subject Teacher interviews held in July when parents have the opportunity to talk with each of their daughter’s teachers about her progress in particular subjects. We hope this interview opportunity will enhance communication between families and the College and our ability to provide the very best for your daughters academically and pastorally.

Administration Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on Students with Disability (NCCD) From 2015, all schools across Australia are taking part in the implementation of a new national data collection on school students with disability. The data will provide information about the number of students with disability in schools, where they are located and the level of adjustments they receive. The information provided through this new national data collection will enable all Australian governments to better target support and resources to benefit students with disability. Better information about school students with disability will help teachers, principals and education authorities to put the right supports in place for students with disability to take part in school on the same basis as students without disability. Information will be recorded in such a way that no child can be identified. Student names will not be collected. Inclusion in the data collection is voluntary. If you wish your young person to be excluded from this, you can choose to opt-out of the data collection by informing the school in writing. Curriculum and Year Level Reports Career News Exploring Vintage Letterpress with Nicole Phillips Students are invited to join renowned letterpress typographer Nicole Phillips at Designworks College of Design for a full day of letterpress experimentation. Students will have fun getting inky and learn how to set wood and metal type on our vintage letterpress equipment. The full-day workshop encompasses a hands-on approach exploring the history and language of letterpress. They will design and produce their own unique letterpress printed page that will be bound into a keepsake visual diary. Language Department News German Today we welcome to Loreto twenty German exchange students and their accompanying teachers Frau Eder and Frau Heiny. These guests are from our sister school, the Maria Ward Schule in Bad Homburg. Frau Eder is the Principal of the school and it is her first trip to Brisbane so we are particularly honoured to have her visit Loreto College Coorparoo. The group will stay in Brisbane until Thursday 30 April and during this time they will participate in a variety of classes which have been specially organised for them. They will also enjoy a range of Australian experiences through visits to Stradbroke Island, Sea World and Australia Zoo. Thank you to the Loreto families who are hosting our international guests. Particular thanks to Mrs Peita Ward and Ms Amy Stewart for their hard work in organising the exchange program and thank you to the Loreto staff who have given of their time to prepare activities for our visitors. Japanese Loreto College Coorparoo has a close relationship with our sister school Kanagawa Gakuen in Yokohama, Japan. Successful exchange programs between the two establishments have taken place for nearly ten years. A group of eighteen girls from Kanagawa Gakuen will be visiting Loreto in late July. We are looking for eighteen Loreto families to host these students from Yokohama in Japan. Loreto girls do not have to be studying Japanese to host these students. The students from Yokohama are around 15 years old and are very enthusiastic to improve their English. They will be in Brisbane from Wednesday 22 July to Tuesday 28 July. Please see the flyer at the end of the newsletter for additional information. If you would like to host one of the Yokohama students, please return the slip to student reception by Tuesday 5 May. French In addition to the relationships with our sister schools, Loreto also has close contact with NACEL, an organisation which operates international exchange programs. In recent years several French exchange students have come to Loreto as part of this program and have contributed very positively to French classes and the Loreto community as a whole. NACEL is hoping to place two 15-17 year old French girls at Loreto this year. These girls will be staying in Brisbane from Saturday 11 July to Wednesday 5 August. We are looking for two Loreto families to host the girls. Loreto girls do not have to be studying French to host these students. Please see the flyer at the end of the newsletter for additional information and for contact details of Patricia Clunes, the NACEL Coordinator. Loreto Kokoda Challenge 2015 Term Two marks the beginning of the final stages of preparation. The remainder of our training is aimed at building endurance and developing teamwork. To do this the teams will train on tracks located in Brisbane Forest Park where the inclines are steeper and longer.
The first training session for the term is on Saturday 25 April. On this day our Kokoda teams will meet at Bellbird Grove to take part in an ANZAC bush service followed by a 17km hike around Camp Mt in recognition of the soldiers who traversed the Kokoda Track in WWII. The teams will be challenged physically and mentally and will need to practice teamwork supporting each other along the circuit. This and future training will help prepare team members for the challenges and decisions that lie ahead on the big day in July. Music News Autumn Concert Series Information Could parents and students please take careful note of the following information for our three Autumn Concerts that will be held over the next few weeks? *All concerts will start at 6:30 pm and run without intermission to finish between 7:30 pm and 8 pm – students are expected to be in their warm-up venue preparing by 6 pm on each night. *From 6 pm until the start of each concert, parents are invited to have a light supper and are able to purchase beer/wine/soft drinks from the bar. Student Dinners pre concerts – Could parents and students please carefully consider their dinner arrangements on concert nights? Monday 27 April could be particularly difficult for some students who have Concert Band Two rehearsal after school until 5pm and then may need to be back at Cruci by 6pm to prepare for that evening’s concert. As this concert will finish about 730pm I am sure these girls could eat at home after the event, but they may wish to bring something extra for between rehearsal and the concert to keep them going strong!
Lastly, please carefully note the following College expectations, that have been published previously:
Autumn Concert Expectations We ask that parents support us in the following expectations so that the concert experience for all is as successful as possible. 1. Students are expected to attend the whole of a concert in which they perform – not arrive late or leave part-way through. When not in warm-up or on stage, students should sit in the nominated Student Seating area of the audience and listen to their friends and peers perform. The changes of format we are trialling in this series have been mainly introduced so as to the make this participation possible for parents and students. If there is a specific reason that a student is unable to stay for a complete concert, parents should be now have contacted the Director of Music to make arrangements. 2. Students are expected to wear full Academic Day uniform (including stockings, not socks) for all performances. The only exception to this is members of Guitar Ensemble who will wear all black for their guitar performance and then change if involved with another group. 3. We would ask that during musical items no-one in the audience uses tablets or phones as this is disrespectful to the musicians on stage. Students using phones at any stage during the concert will have them confiscated by supervising teachers. 4. For Health and Safety reasons, beverages (especially glassware) cannot be taken into the seating area of the concert venues. Each venue will have designated areas near the bar where drinks and snacks can be consumed. Service at the bar will finish 5 minutes before the scheduled start of each concert.

Rehearsal Changes – Flute Ensemble One
As Flute Ensemble One is performing at the Monday 27 April Autumn Concert, students are reminded that your rehearsal for next week will be held on the Monday morning instead of the normal Tuesday morning, as this will obviously be much more beneficial to your preparation for your performance! Rehearsal Changes – Concert Band One There will be no rehearsal for Concert Band One on Thursday of Week Two (30 April) as all Year 11s and Mr Langford will be away on Year 11 Retreat. Rehearsal Changes – Big Band As Big Band will be leaving for their Music Tour on Friday 1 May, our rehearsal for Week Two of term will be held on the afternoon of Tuesday 28 April. There will be no rehearsal on Friday 1 May as students will need to go straight home after school to get ready to depart that evening for Mount Gambier! Grill’d, Camp Hill This is the last fortnight to get involved and help raise money to support your peers! For the month of April, the Loreto Music Support Group has been participating in the Grill’d Camp Hill “Local Matters” campaign. Buy a burger, put your token in the Loreto Music Support Group jar and you could help us win a $300 donation, which is enough money to support a full music tuition scholarship for one school term! Donations Please The annual Loreto Trivia Night is almost upon us! Run by the Music Support Group as both a social evening and fundraiser, the Trivia Night is one of the groups three main opportunities each year to raise the money necessary to continue to support the Beginner Ensembles Program. We are now looking for donations that could be used as prizes for the Trivia Night. Any small items that can be grouped to make prize boxes for tables of 8-10 people would be ideal and could be left at either the main College Office or the Music Office. Boxes of chocolate, $1 & $2 Scratchies, Movie / iTunes / Playstore gift cards or similar items are all fantastic ideas that would be most welcome! Music Tour Meeting Could all students please remember that we will meet at lunchtime on Wednesday 29 April to answer any last-minute questions and distribute any final information regarding the Music Tour. Please make sure you are available for this meeting so that we can finalise accommodation arrangements etc. Music Support Group The April meeting for the Music Support Group is on this Wednesday night 22 April. This month we will be finalising preparation both for the Autumn Concert Series and the Loreto Trivia Night, to be held on Saturday 23 May. The meeting will be held in the bottom level of our new Cruci building and all parents of music students are welcome to attend! Ben Langford - Coordinator of Music

To Erin Joyce who has been selected in the Metropolitan East Netball Team and will compete in the Netball State Championships - 12 Years and Under which will be held from Saturday 20 June until Tuesday 23 June. We wish Erin every success in the competition.
Interhouse Cross Country The Inter-house Cross Country will be held on MONDAY 27 APRIL 2015. All students are expected to participate in the Inter-house Cross Country. The Inter-house Cross Country will be held at Whites Hill Reserve, Boundary St, COORPAROO. The students will be transported by bus to the venue directly after homeroom and returned at approximately 11.45am. A map of the course will be displayed on every Home Room noticeboard. Every student is expected to complete this course whether it is by running or walking. It will be a 3 kilometre course on the ovals and in the bushland. The House Captains and Representatives are looking forward to having their teams come together and compete in a very spirited manner. If a student is unable to complete the course a note must be given to Mrs Stevens at the Sports Office explaining the reason for your daughter’s non-participation. Students are to wear their school sports uniform and cap to school and bring a shirt in their house colour to compete in. All students need to wear lace up running shoes. It is recommended that all students bring a water bottle. If there is rain forecast for Monday morning all students please bring along your books for Day 6 in case it is called off in the morning.

Cross Country Training Squad There will be a Cross Country and Athletics Camp held on 16 and 17 May 2015. Details of the camp will be provided to the girls on Wednesday 22 April. This Camp is organised for the Cross Country Squad and girls who are interested in joining the squad for 2015 Athletics. All voluntary Cross Country Squad members should have received a booklet for the season with details of training and competition. The training times are Monday, Tuesday (compulsory) and Thursday afternoon from 3.30pm to 5.00pm and Wednesday and Friday morning at 6.30am to 8.00am. All permission forms (from the booklet) and details of attendance at Cross Country meets must be submitted to the Sports Department by Friday 24 April 2015. Girls are reminded that if they are travelling away from Loreto, they are to change into their playing uniform at lunchtime and report to the MWC at 3.05pm. If parents intend to collect their daughter from the ‘away’ or the Home ‘Mansfield’ venues, a note must be given to Mrs Gore by morning tea on match day. All buses aim to return to Loreto between 5.30-5.45pm, traffic dependent! We wish all teams the best of luck. Spectators are most welcome, we’d love to see you there! CaSSSA Tennis All training has begun this week for the Tennis program. The original eight team draws have been split into two groups of four based on progressive points after Match 7. The exception is that where a school had two teams in an Eight team draw, the higher placed team from that school is placed in the top group of four and the lower placed team from that school is placed in the bottom group irrespective of position on the points table.
