It was wonderful to have them here with us for the day where they enjoyed participation in classes such as Japanese, French, German, Chinese, Art, Science, Drama, Home Economics, Sport and Music. The students seem to really enjoy their first experience of being a Loreto girl and are very excited about the year ahead. NEW GLOBAL SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS
The world’s leaders have committed to 17 new ‘ Global Sustainable Development Goals’ aimed at achieving three BIG things in the next 15 years:
To end extreme poverty;
To fight inequality and injustice; and
To address climate change.
These 17 goals were endorsed by Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, on behalf of Australia, in New York on 25 September. These new goals replace the Millennium Development Goals set in 2000. Since the first goals were set in 2000, extreme poverty in our world has halved. Oxfam Australia and UNICEF Australia are now seeking input from students in Australia to share with world leaders why these goals matter.

LIVE & WIRED MUSIC FESTIVAL AND ART SHOW Our 6th annual Live & Wired Music Festival last Sunday afternoon was once again a wonderful family and community celebration of the musical talents of our young people. Loreto Ensembles, along with bands from Villanova and St Laurence’s Colleges, provided high quality entertainment and the joy and pride of the musicians as they performed for family and friends was very obvious. The creative talents of Loreto Art students were also apparent in the amazing variety of ceramics, prints, photographs and drawings on display in the student Art Show. Lots of food, drinks and children’s entertainment added to the enjoyment. There are many people to thank after such a significant event: Ms Terry Hamilton, Ms Emma Beach, Mrs Ange Glancy and the Office staff; Mr Ben Langford and Music staff, Mrs Leonie McCulkin and teaching and support staff in the Art Department; the parent Music Support Group, the Sport Support Group, the P&F Association and other parent volunteers; our wonderful Facilities staff; and finally, each and every family member and friend who attended to support and acknowledge our talented students. Cheryl Hamilton Principal Dear Parents RE: ENTERPRISE BARGAINING PROCESS INDUSTRIAL ACTION I am writing to keep you informed about industrial action that will occur at our school on Thursday. This industrial action is linked to enterprise bargaining negotiations currently being undertaken within Queensland Catholic schools. The majority of teachers and staff at Loreto who are members of the Independent Education Union of Australia – Queensland & Northern Territory Branch, recently voted to take industrial action in the form of work stoppages. I have been advised that on Thursday, 22 October, there will be two consecutive one-hour stoppages (from 11.00am to 12noon and from 12noon to 1.00pm). However, most classes will continue as normal. Where this is not possible, the students will be supervised. It should also be noted for your information that industrial action within Catholic education is being taken on a school by school basis. Along with other Catholic school employers, I respect the right to employees to take appropriate industrial action. I invite you to contact me if you have any concerns or require further information. As you are aware child safety and illegal parking around school zones remains a concern for parents, children, local residents and school alike, particularly during peak pick-up and drop-off times. Parking spaces during these times are at a premium and subsequently, competition for these spaces can lead to poor driver behaviour and potentially dangerous parking practices. Council is committed to providing education and awareness as well as a presence at schools to conduct enforcement of parking laws with a view to promoting safe parking and deterring dangerous parking practices.

History News I would like to acknowledge the wonderful efforts of all the Years 8’s for their extraordinary participation in the Living History Day that was held on Thursday 8 October April. The students were entertained with tales of the Viking era as well as the Middle Ages. They engaged in activities that those in the Middle Ages would have participated in ranging from medieval dancing, archery and knight school. The girls also had the opportunity to immerse themselves with the artefacts from these historical periods ranging from shields, swords, weaponry and suits of armour to everyday artefacts such as ear cleaners, needle pouches and drinking horns. All students were an absolute credit to the College and seemed to derive much pleasure from the day. Congratulations also must go to Year 7 Blue and Gold for their outstanding behaviour on their excursion to the R.D. Milns Antiquities Museum at the University of Queensland. These girls were given the opportunity to engage in workshops where they could handle artefacts from Ancient Egypt and hopefully derived some inspiration from the day to assist them in the construction of their very own Egyptian artefact. I look forward to seeing their final creations! Finally I must also offer my congratulations to Rachel Larkin in Year 12. Rachel was extremely successful in the Queensland History Teachers’ Association Annual Essay Writing Competition and was awarded the Indigenous History Prize, the Dr H.R Cowie Award as well as first place in the Year 12 Modern History category for her essay on the Indigenous Australians’ encounter with smallpox as a result of European colonisation. This is a fantastic achievement for Rachel. It is the third year in a row that the College has won this prestigious state wide competition. I thank Mr McAlinden for his expertise in guiding Rachel through the challenging process of research, drafting and writing such a well executed historical essay. The South Bank Connection Two….. Last Monday, it was Years 7 Green, Red and White’s turn to undertake their first integrated field trip to South Bank and its surrounds, as part of their studies for Art, English and Geography. The students set out on a most beautiful spring day, gathering data through all of their senses on their walk between Kurilpa Bridge and the City Botanic Gardens. In addition to having the opportunity to listen to indigenous storyteller “Uncle Joe” convey a number of tales about the Brisbane River, the students were actively involved in sketching and photographing various features, helping them to see South Bank and the surrounds from different perspectives. Feedback indicated it was a most enjoyable and productive day. We commend the students on their excellent behaviour and enthusiasm, making it a very worthwhile experience. We would also like to thank the staff who assisted on the day, including Mrs McCulkin, Mrs Dawes, Mrs Davidson, Mrs Hereth, Ms Law, Ms Coleman, Ms Biskupovich and Mrs Hamlet. Language Department News FRENCH In August, students of French were invited to participate in the annual Alliance Française poetry competition. Congratulations to Lisa Gorse who, out of a record number of participants, was awarded a Highly Commended. Well done, Lisa! GERMAN
We are proud to announce that next year Loreto College will welcome our first native speaking Language Assistant. Alisa Schmidt, a past pupil from our sister school “Maria Ward Schule” in Bad Homburg, will join the Languages Department as a German Language Assistant. She will stay with various families during her time here from July to November 2016 and her presence as a Language Assistant will provide a unique experience for students studying German. While here, Alisa also hopes to see more of Australia, experience Australian culture and improve her English communication skills. Thank you to those families who have volunteered to host Alisa and we hope you all gain much from this wonderful opportunity. For students travelling to Germany at the end of the year, the trip is becoming very real! With only 38 sleeps until we fly, final preparations for the trip are well underway. Lunchtime conversation classes have begun and will run until Week 5. The Year 12 students will be visiting these meetings to impart a wealth of knowledge about what to expect and how best to prepare for the trip. We also have one final parent and student information evening on Tuesday 27 October at 7pm in Room 421. This meeting is compulsory for all travelling students as it will cover vital information regarding the final itinerary, packing and travelling. See you all there! JAPANESE Students in Year 12 Japanese attended their Senior Japanese Dinner on Tuesday 13 October. It was a wonderful night celebrating friendships, Japanese Language and, of course, Japanese Cuisine!

CHINESE The very first Loreto College Chinese Day was held on Thursday 15 October 2015. Students were invited to dress up in Chinese accessories and to participate in Chinese activities during Morning Tea and Lunch. At Morning Tea, students were able to purchase and taste Chinese Pastries and Fortune Cookies. During Lunch, students enjoyed a wide range of cultural activities including Chinese Tea Tasting, Ring Toss Game (Quoits), Quizzes with prizes and Fortune Sticks Game. Music News Live & Wired Music Festival - This year saw Loreto host the 6th annual Live & Wired Music Festival on Deshon Oval. The weather held beautifully and a great crowd gathered to be entertained by Sorelle, Exit Stage Left, the Improvised Jazz Ensemble and Big Bands from Loreto, Villanova and St Laurence’s Colleges. Past pupil and River FM personality Nadia Vanek MC’d the event once again and the school community joined in with: a fantastic Art Show showcasing the works of 2015 Curricular Art students; the Music Support Group running their popular BBQ and Bar; and the Sport Support Group putting on a Seafood café and football passing competition; and lots of help in organisation from both school staff and the parents of the P & F. Add to that a Jumping Castle, giant Jenga, Boutique shopping and a photo booth, and there was something for everyone. What a great afternoon! Ensemble Rehearsals – With some groups having now completed their final performances for the year, some rehearsals will now stop running. Parents and students please make sure you are very aware of which rehearsals are on and which groups have finished as we still have four more concerts/events this year (Spring Concert tonight, Symphony Orchestra at Villanova’s Concert next Tuesday 27 October, Music Night on Friday 30 October & Graduation Mass in November)! Ensemble Auditions this Sunday 25 October – Please make sure you are aware of your time(s) for this Sunday’s Auditions. These have been published on the Music Noticeboard last Wednesday. Don’t forget that some groups have slightly different arrangements from the norm: Senior Chorale (Auditions with Mrs Oxenford before school Thursday & Friday morning this week); Junior Chorale (Auditions to be held in Term One next year); Junior & Senior Choir (no audition required – just make sure you have signed up with the online Audition Form so that your name is on the roll). If you are auditioning for a group that has extra requirements (all percussionists & guitarists; contemporary & Big Band vocalists, pianists & bass players) then you should download the appropriate Audition Set Piece from the LMS. Mega Raffle Tickets – it is vital that all students return their sold or unsold Mega Raffle tickets to the Music Department by the start of next week. While we would obviously prefer that all tickets are sold, it is a legal requirement of this type of fundraising that all tickets are returned and accounted for, so if you have not been able to sell some or all of your tickets please send them back in to school. Symphony Orchestra – Are playing their final performance of the year at Villanova’s Band Finale Concert on Tuesday 27 October. Please arrive at Villa’s Augustine Centre by 7pm (you will be given instructions on where to go for warm-up at rehearsal on Monday). The concert begins at 7:30 pm and should be done by 9pm. Performing Arts This week we finally perform our theatre production, Paper Moon, to a public audience. Thank you to everyone who is coming to the show – your support is appreciated and has ensured the cast will be performing to a full house each night. The girls are very excited and have been working hard to further develop their characterisation. Due to the setting of the play, late 1940s, we will spend some time this week perfecting hairstyles from this era. If you are coming to the performance, I would really appreciate your feedback via email so I can share it with the cast and playwright. See you at the show! Year 11 English trip to the Theatre Students in Year 11 English are currently studying various Australian play and film scripts. Last Thursday evening, 14 students attended the Lyric Theatre at QPAC to see Strictly Ballroom the Musical to accompany their study of Strictly Ballroom in their classes. They looked gorgeous for an evening at the theatre and thoroughly enjoyed the show, even getting the chance to dance with the cast and audience on stage. Sports Department Congratulations to Erin Joyce (Year 7) who competed in the Indoor Netball Federation of Queensland Junior State Titles. Erin has been chosen from this to represent Queensland at the National Junior Indoor Netball Championships in Adelaide from 5 - 12 December. We wish Erin every success in the competition. Schools Cup Volleyball Loreto had three teams compete in the Queensland Junior Schools’ Cup Volleyball Competition over the weekend, two teams in the Year 8 girls division and one team in the Year 10 girls division. All teams competed extremely well, showing fantastic sportsmanship, skill development and teamwork. The Year 10 girls finished in 11th place and the 7/8 Team 2 girls finished in 15th place. Special mention must go to the 7/ 8 Girls Team 1 who won the Gold medal after defeating All Hallows’ 2 sets to nil in the grand final. The team coached by Mrs Gold displayed maturity and calmness during many close matches, which made for exciting viewing for the parents and spectators! Well done girls on such a wonderful result, we are very proud of you. Special thanks also to Mia Page and Isabelle Mowen for coaching their teams and for our dedicated team of parents who supported and transported the girls all over Brisbane. Rebecca Bush & Kirsty Gore

P&F Meeting The last P&F meeting for this year will be held on Tuesday 27 October, 7pm ground floor in Cruci. We would love you to come along and help us plan for another exciting year at Loreto.
