TO THE CLASS OF 2012 You are worthy. The news is full of depressing sta s cs and stories. But you are not a sta s c and you have your own story. You are a person of immeasurable value and your story is full of promise. Treat yourself as such. Trust the journey. Trust that very small step taken in good faith toward something of value will eventually get you some place worth going, even when you are lost in the woods. Let failure be your guide. Life is a series of experiments, and experiments some mes fail. I’ve learned more from my failures than from my successes, no ques on about it. Success makes me think I’ve got it made. Failure just makes me think! And thinking helps me grow. We need each other. We can’t go it alone, so cul vate community, which needn’t mean big number or be a big deal. Two or three trustworthy friends can help you remember who you are and keep your vision for your life in sight. Seek them out and stay in touch. Bear witness against cruelty and injus ce. When we fail to do so, we not only pollute the society and other people’s lives. We also pollute our own souls. Be grateful and be generous. You possess gi s that have been given to you by others. Pass the gi along, knowing that what you give away will be returned to you many‐fold. Be generous especially with your me, energy, a en on and care not out of duty but out of gra tude. Daily keep your death before your eyes. This is not morbid counsel, but a prac ce that enhances one’s apprecia on of everyday life and all the li le things that make life holy – from a gorgeous sunset, to a child’s laughter, to the kindness of a stranger. Live the ques ons. Life’s most important ques ons don’t have answers in any conven onal sense. They are ques ons around which you wrap your life and, as Rilke says, on some distant day you may find that you’ve lived your way into an answer. So wrap your life around ques ons worth living. “How can I get the biggest slice of the pie?” is not such a ques on! But here’s one that is, in the words of Frederick Buechner: “How can I find the place where my deep gladness meets the world’s deep need?” (Parker J Palmer)

XÇÜ|v{ÅxÇà cÜÉzÜtÅ @ lxtÜ DD As part of our Enrichment Program this semester, myself and eight other girls from Year 11, with the collaboration of St Laurence’s, have had the pleasure of traveling to Nursery Road Special School to engage in a new program aimed at encouraging music, interaction and bonding with a selected class of their students. We entered the project hoping to record our experiences and create a production or documentary of our time working with the students. I can say on behalf of all of us that what we have come away with is so much more than we could have ever imagined. In the small space of two hours every week, we have forged personal relationships with each one of our students. We have seen how their behaviour has developed and opened our eyes in admiration to those who work with them every day. We look forward to seeing them as much as they look forward to seeing us. We have been able to witness their ups and downs and capture moments with them that we hope to share with the wider community in the aim of raising awareness of the difference each one of us can make in the lives of others. We wish to extend our immense thanks to all those who have made this project possible for us, as it has been an eye opening and inspiring experience. YtÜxãxÄÄ àÉ ËbÄwË fÑÉÜàá hÇ|yÉÜÅ A reminder that the two year transition from our ‘old’ sports uniform to our ‘new’ sport uniform will finish at the end of this year. The only students who will be able to wear the old blue shorts and gold polo shirt in 2013 will be Year 12s whose only sporting commitment is their one lesson of Core PE each week. All students in Years 8 - 11 and Year 12s involved in inter-school sport must wear the new blue shorts and blue/gold polo shirt. The cost is $22 for normal cleaning, or $27 for a small mend or if the hat requires extra cleaning. Hats and bands are to be placed inside a plastic shopping bag with your name clearly marked on the hat, band and on the outside of the bag. Hats are to be handed into the school office on Friday 30th November BEFORE going to assembly. Payment is required on collection of hats from the second hand uniform shop on Monday 28th January 2013 from 9 am - 12 midday. Due to the colour of our hats, the Milliner will do her best to clean them but she is unable to perform miracles! Thank you.

\ g axãá Student Laptop Program 2013 The rollout of the student laptop program will involve all Loreto College students in 2013. The present Year 10 and 8 students will carry over their laptops from this year while the incoming Year 8 students and the present Year 9 students will be issued with new laptops at the start of the year. The College provides laptops to all students for use both at school and at home. These laptops come with all the software (including Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite) pre-loaded, three year accidental damage warranty and ICT support and training included as part of the package. This is a parent funded rental program with a buy-out at the conclusion, which is the same as what we have done this year with Years 8 and 10.
The Year 12 students of 2013 (present Year 11s) will be issued with the best laptops from our present fleet of student and staff laptops since they are only at the College for one more year at no cost to parents. They will also be issued with a bag in which to carry it. These laptops also have all of the necessary software pre-loaded and support is provided through the ICT Help Desk.
Some important dates are below.
Wednesday 31st January 2013 - Year 12 Laptop distribution (end of Orientation Day)
Tuesday 5th February 2013 - Year 10 Laptop Distribution (3.30pm - 6pm)
Monday 11th February 2013 - Year 8 Laptop Distribution (7pm - 8.30pm)
On the day of issue for the 2013 Year 10 and 8 students, all girls will login to their laptop for the first time and will receive a lesson in which software will be activated and training provided. There are different arrangements for these year levels in the collection procedure, which is outlined below.
Year 8 2013 will have a brief information evening (11/02/2013) starting at 7pm in the Mary Ward Centre, which we ask all parents and their daughters to attend. This will be followed by the actual distribution of the laptops and the signing of the contract. Only once parents have signed the contract will the laptop be issued.
Page 6 The arrangement for the Year 10 2013 students is slightly different in that the distribution session is held in the afternoon (5/02/13) in the Mary Ward Centre. There is no information session as such and between 3.30pm and 6pm parents are able to come along and sign the contract and take the laptop with their daughter. ICT members will be available at this time to talk you through any queries that you may have. Parents must sign the contract before the laptops are able to be taken away.
Information is available on the Loreto College Website through the ‘Student Laptop Portal’ which is on the Quick Links menu on the home page. Student ID Cards All students will need to keep their present ID cards for the start of the 2013 school year until they are replaced along with new lanyards etc. sometime in February. These compulsory cards not only provide ID for public transport but are important for our systems here at the college. Printing, late registration and library borrowing all require this card. Please encourage your daughter to keep this card in a safe place for the start of next year to avoid having to purchase a new one before the 2013 cards are issued. `âá|v axãá Music Camp 2013 The closing date for returning music camp forms has now passed. A large number of forms are yet to be returned. Students who will attend the camp will receive a letter confirming their place. Please remember that places on Music Camp are limited to approximately 110 students and these places normally fill very quickly. câuÄ|v fÑxt~|Çz On Wednesday 7 November, Lauren Michael and Alexandra White were entrants in the Finals of the ESU Speaking Competition. The standard of prepared speeches was very high, despite the fact that the participants had only one week to prepare. The title of the speech was “Variety is the spice of life”. Both Lauren and Alexandra spoke with a theme of social justice. The competitors were then given an impromptu speech. Again, both girls acquitted themselves well. Lauren Michael was placed second in the competition and received a trophy as well as a cheque for $100.00. Congratulations, Lauren! Both girls were excellent ambassadors for Loreto. They not only spoke well but were confident and poised in meeting with the dignitaries present. Well done to you both! Mrs Rosemary O’Neill - Coordinator Public Speaking
c9 Y axãá Drop Curtain A ‘drop’ curtain will be installed in the Mary Ward Centre over the Christmas holidays. Like the large ceiling fans in the Centre which were also funded by the P & F, the curtain will make a big difference to the school by allowing different classes to operate simultaneously in the building. It will be another tangible reminder of the benefits of paying the modest quarterly P & F levy. The P & F has also set aside additional funds for the modification of the light bar in the Centre while the scaffolding is in place for the curtain.
Sport Support Group The Sport Support Group launched its charter at a wine and cheese night last week. Loreto is looking to build a network of parents and others with an interest in sport who are prepared to attend competitions and act in official roles including coaches, managers, umpires and timekeepers. Parents are urged to volunteer by contacting the Director of Sport Meg Stevens for more information. Loreto College prides itself on a ‘professional’ approach to sport but teachers need support to ensure these high standards are maintained. This process will continue next year with more details to be provided in future Garry West P & F Secretary newsletters.

Waterpolo Reports Under 14’s The U14 team were defeat by Mt St Michael’s by 2 goals. For the first three quarters it was very close then limited reserves tired the girls out in the fourth quarter. There was excellent defence from Beth Kassulke and some superb shooting by Farren Buckley. Good effort girls, a reminder that training will be on Thursday this week. Coach: Oliver Chambers Under 15’s The U15 team were defeated by Brisbane Girls Grammar School. It was a tough game for the girls being their first loss of the season. Lack of composure left us always on the back foot. Being physically outplayed by a stronger team left the girls a little intimidated. However they proved that they are able to beat anyone by just keeping it simple and concentrating on the little tasks; doing so allowed the girls to win the second quarter 1 - 0. A great team to watch out for in the finals. Coach: James Duffy. Under 18’s The Loreto Warriors were defeated by All Hallow’s 2 . The Loreto girls have demonstrated an improvement with their defensive skills and working together as a team. The girls have stepped up to the challengers and should be very proud of their efforts. We are finishing our St Vinnie’s activities for 2012 with attendance at the Graduation Dance at the Nursery Road State Special School. A number of Loreto students have given regular assistance there as part of their Community Service. Our St Vinnie’s members have also worked with the students of the Special School. We are collecting presents for the local elderly in the Holland Park Meals on Wheels. These will be delivered on Friday 21st December along with a meal. We are still needing presents or a $2.00 donation to the office. I receive such appreciative letters and phone calls from the recipients. We realise that this service is highly valued by the local community and our students get great satisfaction from this service as a very fitting “giving activity” so totally in the spirit of Christmas where we especially try to think more of the needs of others. I wish to thank Ms Deb Bauer for her able assistance and support throughout the year. The Mission Statement of the St Vincent de Paul Society holds to the idea that we give a “hand up” not just a “hand out”. Also the Society prefers to work “face to face”. This is why we have so many Outreach Activities during the year. We also fundraise and we must thank the Loreto Community for their generous support.
