Blessed with beautiful Autumn weather, the day was glorious in every sense. Particular thanks go to the Student Leaders, the Year Coordinators and the Facilities Team for their hardwork, organization and leadership. Special congratulations must go to Ward who won both the Jazz and the Choir events. I offer sincere thanks also to the Year 12 Religion students for their extra efforts in raising awareness amongst the younger students. As a community we raised over $13,000 for Mary Ward International Australia and for Catholic Missions. Together we can rejoice knowing the good that these funds will achieve. Thank you everyone for your wonderful generosity and commitment to making a difference for good in our world. WELCOME This week we warmly welcome Loreto’s new Development and Community Relations Manager, Ms Terry-Lee Hamilton. Ms Hamilton is greatly excited by this opportunity to use her experience and skills to support Loreto’s community spirit and development into the future. Ms Hamilton is not new to Loreto, however, as she returns to us in this new capacity, having graduated from the College in 1989. We wish her every success and great enjoyment in the role. We also welcome Ms Jane Bernays who will be replacing Mr Langford in the Music Department for the rest of the term whilst he takes some well-earned Long Service Leave. We trust that she will greatly enjoy her time at Loreto. FAREWELL AND PRAYERS Last week the Year 9’s gathered in the Babylon Courtyard to bid a fond farewell to their peer and friend Ksenia. For reasons of poor health, Ksenia needs to now continue her academic studies via Distance Education. Her parents thanked the girls for their love, care and prayers and asks us all to please continue to hold Ksenia in our prayers. We wish her every blessing and offer her and her family our most heartfelt prayers.

Accounting & Economic News QUT Blue-shift Over the Easter holidays, two teams of Year 11 Accounting and Economics Students completed an entry into the 2015 QUT Blue-Shift competition. Each team of four students had to address a real-life business case study and provide creative and innovative solutions to help improve this business model. The case study for 2015 was to reinvigorate the mail delivery sector of Australia Post. Both teams scored well, however, a special congratulations must go to “Team Innovation”, comprising Nicole Hodge, Isabelle Orazio, Brittany DiSavia and Jemima Reid who have been selected to compete in the finals at QUT on Saturday 23 May. Project Rockit Visit from Project Rockit- Year 7, 8 and 9 On Monday 11 May the girls from Year 7, 8 and 9 had the privilege of participating in a workshop run by the team from Project Rockit. The workshop focused on the importance of appropriate use of social media, the role of the bystander and establishing Hot tips on coping strategies. The sessions were thought provoking and resilience building. The take home messages for students were powerful: have courage to do what is right, to speak up and make a change. Messages for parents include: we need to establish strict guidelines about what sites are daughters are accessing, who they are talking to, the language they are using and of course monitoring the time spent on devices. It is strongly recommended that phones and computers are not in bedrooms overnight and they are used in communal areas as much as possible. A reflection from a Year 9 Parent; I just wanted to say thank you for organising the Project Rockit Forum last Wednesday, both for my daughter and for me as a parent. In our daughter's ever changing world my husband and I always appreciate the opportunity to be informed. Even though we have been to many internet forums over the years with older children I picked up some great up to date info. I loved the tip regarding privacy settings "If they don't know you, they don't owe you", which illustrates that social media followers you haven't actually met in person don't necessarily have to have your best interests at heart. Year 11 Geography Caring for our Coastlines
This term, the two Year 11 Geography classes have been learning about the natural and human processes that affect coastal systems at beaches, and the importance of sustainably managing the issues that threaten our precious beaches. Accompanied by our teachers Mrs Valentine and Mrs Hanson, on Wednesday 6 May, we were privileged to take part in a field trip to the Gold Coast. Here we travelled to both Palm and Narrowneck Beaches to investigate these issues, taking photos and making notes in our field booklets along the way. We also had a very informative talk from our guest speaker, Margie Muurmans, the Griffith University Centre for Coastal Management Coordinator. We were able to apply our geographical skills on the day to better understand coastal processes and gather data for our field report. We were privileged with some free time at the end of the day, before arriving back at school with sand-filled shoes. Year 12 Geography – Planning Places – Our CBD This term, as part of their unit “Planning Places”, the Year 12 Geography class has been conducting an investigation into one of the various projects being undertaken by the Brisbane City Council to revitalise the Brisbane’s CBD; their Vibrant Laneways Project. This project is part of their vision for Brisbane’s future development. At the beginning of the unit, the students undertook a whole day’s field work in the Brisbane CBD. Part of this fieldwork involved meeting with and listening to the BCC’s Executive Officer for Urban Renewal, Rebecca Arnaud (past pupil Loreto, 1998) and Head of Urban Design, Scott Chaseling. Both presenters were once again very impressive and from this, the students were able to gain a more complete understanding of the need for planning for our city’s future, now. They were also armed with vital information to help them carry out the rest of their field work activities, which formed part of their current assessment, a Report. It was a most enjoyable and productive day, with students commenting on now seeing the city centre (and parts of the Fortitude Valley) with a very different set of eyes. We would like to thank Mrs Valentine for accompanying us on the day; she not only helped with the photography but was also able to sharing her valuable insights with the students. Music News Thanks and farewell For personal reasons our string tutor and conductor Mrs Tricia Reck has had to resign from her position at Loreto, effective immediately. Tricia has been an hard-working and extremely skilled tutor at the school for the past nine years and will be missed by staff and students. We wish her all the best for the future. We have a special guest tutor and conductor coming in to look after the students this week so lessons will continue as normal. Enquiries Regarding co-curricular music (including tuition and ensembles) for the rest of Term 2 should be addressed to either Mrs Karen Carr or Mrs Jane Bernays (3394 9915 music@loreto.qld.edu.au) while Mr Langford is taking some long service leave. Science News Year 12 Chemistry Extended Experimental Investigation
Mooting News Last Friday 1 May, four Year 12 Legal Studies Students - Lauren Hocking, Sarah O’Shea, Krystal Hatzipapas and Maria Manicaros competed in the Bond Mooting Competition against Brigidine College at the Commonwealth Law Courts. The girls did extremely well with the Judges expressing how impressed they were with the girls’ ability to think ahead to answer questions and the overall structure and presentation of their arguments. As this was the first time Loreto competed in the mooting competition the girls are to be commended for their outstanding effort. A special thinks to Mr Preston for his guidance in preparation for the moot. We look forward to hearing the final results. Maria Manicaros
Public Speaking News Last week was a very busy one for our Public Speakers. Amelia Abdelrazek and Georgia Garrett both competed in the ESU (English Speaking Union) Queensland Final. Both students were very engaging and handled the impromptu speeches confidently. They both received very positive feedback from the adjudicators and audience members. We thank them for representing Loreto College Coorparoo so well!
On the weekend, Rostrum participants who went forward, competed against a particularly high standard of speaker. Sophia Dabinett (Year 10) competed against all Year 11 and 12 students and was awarded ‘Reserve’. This means if the winner cannot attend the next session, then Sophia will be asked to compete. Well done, Sophia, on a well-structured and varied speech! Sophia’s delivery was outstanding! Also competing were Amelia Abdelrazek, Bridgette Dabinett and Ruby Daley. Each of these girls spoke confidently and convincingly and they were most entertaining. Well done, girls! To all girls who spoke this term – a big thank you for your time, commitment and enthusiasm! Fundraising Dinner for Room to Read Projects in Nepal Loreto has supported Room to Read’s fundraising dinners in the Mary Ward Centre because of their shared purpose – the transformational impact of education. This year, the dinner will fundraise to rebuild its projects in earthquake-ravaged Nepal. Nepal is very special to Room to Read. Way back in 1998, John Wood, on a trekking holiday from his Microsoft job visited a school that had NO books! They said "Come back. Bring books". And he did! He then started the organisation, Room to Read. Since then, Room to Read have built 3776 libraries and 1101 schools in Nepal, and published 269 titles in Nepalese. It's important to rebuild these schools and libraries as quickly as possible because getting kids back to school creates normalcy in their lives.
