Volume 36 - 18 November, 2014 Dear Parents and Students As the year comes rapidly to a close I wish to acknowledge and thank a number of staff whose time holding particular leadership roles will conclude at year’s end. Firstly, I wish to sincerely thank Mr Gavin Swanson – Deputy Principal - ICT for his outstanding contribution and service given over these past four years. The legacy of his leadership is evident in the transformational changes that have occurred in terms of significant improvements to the ICT infrastructure, hardware and software throughout the College. His passion and vision for improving teaching and learning has been evident in all that he has achieved so masterfully in such a quiet, confident and capable way. It is a genuine loss to our leadership team that he wishes to return to the classroom, but our loss is a definite gain for the students. I wish also to thank Mrs Jenny Strachan, Year 8 Coordinator (since 1986) and Ms Michelle Davidson, Year 10 Coordinator, for their significant Pastoral Leadership. Their particular care of the students and support for families has been greatly valued and appreciated. They have provided genuine quality service and selfless commitment. We sincerely thank them. Lastly, I wish to thank the following Academic Coordinators: Mr Kevin McAlinden, History Coordinator (since 1989); Ms Chris Rynne, Business Coordinator; Mrs Chris Cuskelly, Workplace Learning Coordinator and Mr Alan Lane-Richardson, Senior ICT Coordinator. The fine leadership of each has been appreciated and valued. We thank them for their evident efforts and generous commitment shown over past years. Especially we thank Mr McAlinden and Mrs Strachan for their sustained leadership and very generous commitment and service given to the school over so many years. They have each, in their own unique way, especially encouraged and nurtured generations of Loreto girls to become women of dignity and confidence. With the many changes to come in 2015, a number of our current staff will hold new positions of leadership next year. The following staff members have been appointed to new Pastoral roles in 2015. I congratulate and thank them for their willingness to accept these positions: Year 10 Coordinator – Mrs Kate Thomas Year 8 Coordinator – Mrs Jan Kearney Year 7 Coordinator – Mrs Anna Nielson 2015 TIMETABLE Another change to be introduced in 2015 will be the move to a seven day cyclical timetable. This timetable will enable a more flexible and equitable distribution of time across subjects and it will allow the students in Years 9 and 10 to choose a greater number of electives to study.

The Student Handbook and College Calendar will indicate which ‘day’, from Day 1 to Day 7, will occur on each date during the school terms. Certain dates, such as Sports Carnivals, Mission Day and whole school Exam Block days when there are no scheduled classes, will be called Day 0, but these are full school days. All students have a Personal Development lesson once a cycle on Day 1. A whole school Assembly will occur on each Day 3 and Year 11 students will be engaged in Enrichment activities for two periods on each Day 5. Each day will have six 50 minute lessons and everyday will have the exact same bell times. Before and after school activities will continue to be scheduled on a Monday – Friday basis. This will include Music Ensemble Rehearsals, Inter-School Sport, sport team training, after-school detention, Junior Drama Club etc. Most lunchtime meetings and activities will be scheduled on a Day One to Seven basis. A small number of lunchtime activities will continue to be scheduled on a Monday – Friday basis, eg Friday lunchtime Mass and Beginner Ensembles conducted by private music tutors. Private music tuition will be scheduled on a Monday – Friday basis to allow part-time music tutors to fit in their other commitments. CONGRATULATIONS

Art Department Flight of the Imagination - Humans have always had a fascination with creatures of the air. We are envious of their ability to spread their wings and fly high above the earth. Creatures of the air are beautiful, majestic and powerful; artists have often depicted them in their artworks. Year 8 Green and Blue have used images of creatures of flight, both real and imaginary, to create sculptural birds. Dialogue of Christian and Muslim Student Report on GUMFC On initiative from some of our Year 10 students at Loreto, a group joined with students from Brigidine, Lourdes Hill, Stuartholme and the Islamic College of Brisbane on 6 November at the Griffith University Multi Faith Centre. The purpose of the day was to build relationships between Christian and Muslim students and explore possibilities for continuing partnerships of mutual interest. The day began with input from a Muslim woman, Nora Amath, who talked of her experience and her faith. After a Q and A session, students got to know each other over a delicious Halal lunch that was especially prepared. After lunch, they worked together brainstorming possibilities to harness the momentum of the day. Many exciting possibilities came out of the afternoon and we intend to continue the relationship with joint activities from the start of next year. Aislind Bell - Year 10
Music News Music Camp 2015 Music Camp Invites were last week emailed directly to parents of continuing students in Concert Band One, Guitar Ensemble One, Senior Choir and String Ensemble/Chamber Strings. If you are expecting an invite and did not receive this email, please contact the Music Office urgently as the cut-off date for returns is tomorrow (Wednesday 19 November) and numbers on the camp are always limited! Ensemble Music All students should be now have returned their ensemble music to their conductors. If for some reason you have not done so, please return your music to the Music Office by the end of this week. Music Photos for Sale Have you ever admired all the music photos on the picture wall in the MWC Mezzanine Corridor? Are there some particularly images you would just love to keep? Then you are in luck! On Wednesday 19 November, all photos will go on sale for 20c to 50c (depending on size). Money raised will go to the SVDP Christmas Appeal. P & F News Calling for Year Level Representatives Next year might seem like a long way off but we need to plan now for the start of the 2015 school year. To ensure we hit the ground running in the first term we are looking for parents to volunteer now as year level representatives. The job involves organising social events for parents, which may be held at the school, your home or an external venue like a restaurant, cafe or bar.
