I especially hope that those families who are travelling overseas have a wonderful and blessed me. FAREWELLS & RETIREMENTS 

On behalf of the many thousands of current and past students and staﬀ who have enjoyed the support, service, resources and welcoming atmosphere of Loreto’s Library, I oﬀer our sincere best wishes and thanks to Mrs Kathy Hedemann, Loreto’s longstanding Teacher‐Librarian, on the very significant occasion of her re rement.

For 38½ years, Ms Hedemann has given generous, loyal and loving service to countless learners at Loreto; encouraging, inspiring and gently guiding them in their readership and their quest for informa on, knowledge and understanding. She has captured and lived out the ethos of a Mary Ward educa on, ever‐weaving it into the very heart and fabric of the library experience at Loreto. Her dynamic, eﬀervescent, hopeful and joyous outlook has especially given witness to the values of felicity and freedom which are such an integral part of our Loreto charism.

We thank Kathy for her leadership, her passion, her laughter and the example of life‐long learning she has been to us all. We wish her much joy and all the best for her future. As the saying goes:

We may take this ‘girl’ out of Loreto but I know we will never take Loreto out of this ‘girl’.



We also extend to Mr Alec Raymond our very best wishes for his re rement from teaching. Mr Raymond commenced teaching at Loreto in 1989 as a teacher of Drama, English, Religion and French.

Mr Raymond brought his love of theatre, music, culture and performance to Loreto enriching the lives and learning of many students and colleagues. He gave generously and joyfully, bringing crea vity and energy to all he undertook. Mr Raymond was a teacher who inspired and engaged; he was passionately commi ed to his profession and to the well‐being of his students. We give thanks for his many years of loyal and commi ed service and wish him every blessing in his re rement.



We extend to Mrs Helen Radvan, Frau Peita Ward, Mrs Jenny Strachan, Mrs Angela Waite and Mrs Fiona Meecham our very best wishes as they each take some leave in the term ahead. We wish them me of renewal, recovery and refreshment, blessed with opportuni es to rest and ‘play’.

I oﬀer my thanks to Miss Kath McCormack and Mrs Margaret Dowling both of whom have been with us this term in the absence of other staﬀ members who have been on leave. We are very grateful to have had them return to Loreto and thank them for their con nued generosity in serving Loreto.

I offer my sincere thanks to the magnificent staff at Loreto for another most successful term. It is deligh ul to read in the students’ reports just how much has been achieved by the girls (in both the curricular and co‐curricular) under the expert tutelage and gentle guidance of their teachers. We now take me to enjoy a well‐deserved rest and to reflect upon these achievements and the advice offered for improvement as we prepare for the challenge of the semester ahead.

TÜà WxÑtÜàÅxÇà axãá Year 12 Visual Art students have completed their first Body of Work. The students developed their own focus in response to the concept, The Human Condition – Extrinsic. Works ranged from photographic images investigating the influence of media and technology to weapons constructed of cutlery reflecting on the fact that as humans we kill to eat. The following teams should qualify for the Finals Rounds, which begin in late July: 8.1, 8.2, 9.1, 10.1 and 11.1. Congratulations to these teams and good luck. Thanks to all coaches for their assistance to date and thanks to the parents for ensuring that their daughters got to the venues on time. Early in Term Four, there will be a “fun” debate against Villanova. Each team will comprise of a Year 8 as first speaker, a Year 10 as second and a Year 12 as third. For those of you who are new to the school , the Live and Wired concert is held on the school oval and is a celebration of the achievements of different ensemble groups. This year we would like to encourage the general school community, as well as the local community, to come and help us celebrate 85 years of Loreto, as well as our talented students. We are hoping to hold a "Fashion through the Years" parade, as well as a visual history of Loreto over the last 85 years. We are looking for anyone who may have school uniforms from Loreto and Villanova College, as well as any memorabilia that we could

`âá|v axãá Loreto Music Festival - All girls who are performing at the Loreto Music Festival Finals Concert on Wednesday night, please be aware of the following: 1.

It is your responsibility to arrive prior to the 6pm start and to warm up in time for your performance (use the upstairs practice rooms).

You should wear respectable concert clothing, NOT school uniform.

If you need an accompanist you should have been emailed out a rehearsal schedule on Wednesday. PLEASE note that this schedule has been updated since the last school newsletter.

All performers should bring a plate of food for supper to the MWC canteen directly before the concert.

Music Support Group – All parents of Music students are invited to attend the Music Support Group AGM on Wednesday 17 July (first week of next term). The Music Support Group meetings begin at 7:30 pm (typically finishing by 8:30 pm) in room 605 of the Gonzaga Barry Building. The MSG is an important and enthusiastic group of parents who support the College through running social and fundraising events, helping at concerts and Audition Day, and promoting the excellence of music at Loreto. New members are always welcome! Flute Ensemble Two – Mrs Anderson will be away in week 1 of next term. There will therefore be no rehearsal for Flute Ensemble 2 on the first Wednesday of term. Jazz Ensemble Rehearsals – The holiday workshop (for students attending the Music Tour) will be held on Wednesday 10 July from 9 am to 11:30 am. Students are asked to arrive by 8:45 to set up and warm up. For this session we will be working with Mr Daniel Quigley, Head of School at the Jazz Music Institute. Mr Quigley has performed alongside musicians such as Dale Barlow, James Morrison, Grace Knight and Anthony Warlow, as well as performing in New York and Japan and in major festivals and venues such as the Queensland Music Festival, Noosa Jazz Festival, Valley Jazz Festival, Brisbane Festival, Brisbane Powerhouse, Judith Wright Centre, Brisbane Jazz club, Paris Cat (Melb), and Sydney Opera House. He will have some fantastic ideas on interpreting our music so this should be a great workshop! While we do not return for Term Three until Wednesday 17 July (July 16 is Parent/Teacher Interview Day), WE WILL STILL REHEARSE on the Tuesday morning but at the delayed time of 8 am to 9:30 am. All members of the group are expected to attend on this day and to arrive by 7:45 am to setup. Rehearsals in first week of Term 3 – All other rehearsals for Week One of next term (Wednesday to Friday) will run as normal. World’s Biggest Orchestra – This Guinness Book of Records World Record Attempt will be held at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday 13 July. The event begins at 3pm but gates open for entry from 1pm. Mr Langford will meet the Loreto Group near Gate D (Caxton Street end) at 2:15 pm on the day. Parents should be aware that, due to seating arrangements inside the stadium, Mr Langford will not be able to directly supervise students after they enter the venue. However, he will be there on the day to meet students and assist with initial organisation or difficulties. Students need to: *

Reminder – It is obviously of vital importance to each student’s musical development that they make sure they take their instruments home over the extended upcoming holiday period! No student instruments should be left in the MWC Instrument Storerooms. This holiday also might provide a perfect opportunity to make sure instrument cases are all named. This is particularly important with Guitars as most students have identical cases which causes frequent confusion. A few reminders about the upcoming Formal. The pre-formal function for parents is from 7.00 pm until 8.00 pm in the foyer area of the Grand Ballroom on Level 5 of the Hilton. Parking is available at the Wintergarden complex at a flat weekend rate of $10. Access to this carpark is via Elizabeth Street. Professional photographers will be on-site from 6.30pm if parents wish to avail themselves of this service. The girls have been fully briefed about expectations of behaviour for themselves and partners on the evening. We ask that parents support us by escorting their daughters and partners to the venue at 7.00pm and then picking them up at 11.30pm. No one will be allowed to leave the venue before this time. We again remind you that the girls do not need additional forms of transport to get them to and from the venue. As you are aware, the College does not support the girls attending ‘post parties’. If this was to occur, we urge you to ensure planned and careful supervision as the safety of the girls is paramount. Please discuss this with your daughters. Once the girls immerse themselves in the glitz and glamour that is the Year 12 Formal, the parents will have the opportunity to indulge in some fun of their own. All Year 12 parents are invited to attend the popular Parent Dinner on Saturday 13 July, 8.15pm at Tattersall’s Club, $60pp. The night will follow the Formal pre-dinner drinks at the Hilton. The evening promises to deliver a glamorous night of celebration with fine food and fabulous company. Dinner will include a two course alternate drop menu, tea and coffee (cash bar only). The Year 10 Camp for 2013 will occur in Week One of Term Four, from Wednesday 9 October until Friday 11 October. Loreto has had a long history with our camp providers, Meebunbia, who operate near Maroon Dam. Representatives from Meebunbia will be speaking with the Year 10 group during PD time in the first week of Term Three to describe the Meebunbia camping experience and to address any questions from the students. Soccer - Round 6 Due to the cancellation of Round 2 and Round 5, games will be replayed in Round 6 and 7. Round 6 games will be played on Wednesday 17 July. Open A team and Junior A team play away at Brigidine at Taringa Rovers, Indooroopilly Open C and Junior C teams play at home. Open C and Junior C team both play Lourdes Hill at Annerley Soccer Club, 98 Victoria Terrace, Annerley. If students are being picked up from Indooroopilly, they must provide a signed note to Mr Jones, no later than the morning of the fixture. Athletics There will be a training session at QE11 directly after school for all disciplines on Tuesday 18 June. A bus will take the girls to the QE11 stadium and return to Loreto College at 5.30pm. Students must register at the Sports Office at attend. Seating on bus is limited. Training times are as follows: Middle Distance Thursday 20 June 6.45am - 8.00am and 3.30pm - 4.45pm Sprints Thursday 20 June 3.30pm - 4.45pm (Compulsory) Throws Thursday 20 June 6.45am - 8.00am. There will be a Holiday Training program for the Athletics at the end of Term 2.

Athletics Carnival A reminder that students will be attending the Interhouse Carnival on Friday 21 June at the University of Queensland track. This is the last Interhouse sporting event for the year. All students are expected to attend to support their house and participate in events. Magazines, I pods and the like are NOT permitted. Students are to wear correct school sports uniform to and from school, including normal sports runners and cap and can change into house colours once they arrive at school. Students will travel to and from the carnival by bus and will receive their reports when they return to school in the afternoon. If any student is not able to be here on Friday, 21 June, her report will be posted home. Students who are unable to participate for medical reasons are to see Ms Carty with a note prior to the carnival date and will be issued with a job on the day. There will be limited canteen facilities but it is strongly advised that each student brings her own lunch. Students should ensure they have a Loreto Sports hat, sunscreen and water bottle. Students are asked to ensure that they also come prepared for potentially overcast and windy weather conditions with warm clothes (Loreto Jumper), spare shoes, socks and shirt, rain jacket and/or umbrella. XvÉÇÉÅ|v gÜ|Ñ àÉ VtÇuxÜÜt On Sunday May 26, 18 Year 12 Economics students along with Ms Diamond and myself, embarked on a two day excursion to our nation’s capital for a dose of “Economics in action”. Currently studying the unit “Contemporary Macroeconomic Management”, these students were able to investigate government decision making at a federal level, as well as improving their civics education. The trip took the students to the Australian War Memorial, The Australian Institute of Sport, The Australian Electoral Education Centre and Parliament House. On the Monday, the Australian Electoral Electoral Centre delivered an excellent program on the voting process, whilst Parliament House provided the students with opportunities for understanding the process of debating a bill through role play (a program provided by the Parliamentary Education Office). An informative tour of both the House of Representatives and the Senate was also undertaken as well as a session watching a very interesting “Question Time” whilst the House of Representatives had their first sitting after the release of the Budget. One of the highlights of the trip was meeting our local member for Griffith, The Honourable Kevin Rudd. We felt very honoured to meet him in his office at Parliament House before Question Time, considering his hectic schedule; it was truly appreciated. I would like to thank the Australian Government for contributing with funding for this trip under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate programme. Their support of this programme plays a vital role in enabling us to take on this trip. Thank you also to the eighteen girls who attended – Brittany Ahern, Tayla Benvenuti, Madeline Blanchfield, Samantha Bull, Sabrina Ciancio, Tiana Gilhooley, Jessica Gillman, Christina Gleeson, Verity Goriss, Taylor Grimes, Kathryn Hastie, Ashleigh Mullins, Kate Mylonas, Brigid Oliver, Naa Sackey, Jamie-Lee Sharp, Michaela Sharp and Amerisa Xynias – they were fine ambassadors for Loreto College. Many people have asked What are you going to do?” “So…to start with, I am volunteering with an international organisation, Room to Read which has created 12,000 libraries since 2000 in Asia and Africa. Their policy of “education for girls” is very Mary Ward. Also in September, I’m walking some of the pilgrim walk in Spain, The Camino. So, pray for me then, that I make it! Thank you to all the Library Assistants Group, ably led by Lauren Higgins and Katie Clarke for their assistance, liveliness and love of the library. The Course Content has been designed to build self confidence and make girls realise that they can be successful in every walk of life. DEPORTMENT: Correct method shown for sitting, standing, walking and stairs. Each girl is individually assessed and then advised how carry her body with style and grace. MAKE-UP: An individual make-up will be done in class and each girl will be shown how to apply products for her particular features.
