Volume 36 - 17 November 2015 Dear Parents and Students As the academic year draws rapidly to a close and we prepare to farewell the Class of 2015 we offer them our thanks and our gratitude for all that they have given to this community, especially as leaders this year. It has been both a delight and privilege to watch these young women grow in both confidence and maturity during these past five years. I remember them well as young and eager Year 8’s when they entered Loreto in 2011, which was our year of Felicity. I am confident that they too remember this year well and look back on it with many fond and special memories. How quickly time has brought us to this point, when now we say farewell. To the Seniors of 2015, I offer this wisdom for your future: Deep within your soul there is a knowing place – a sanctuary where gifts are nurtured.

QCS Practice for Year 11 Year 11 students who are intending to sit QCS in 2016 will do their first practice for Multiple Choice on Wednesday 25 and Short Reponses Items on Thursday 26 November. They will have a preparation session with Dr Theresa Bourke from QUT prior to each paper. This is a very important start to the QCS session. It gives the students a clearer understanding of what to expect from the papers and strategies on how to work through the different types of questions. Students do not have to be OP eligible to sit QCS and students who are considering entry on rank at the end of Year 12 should attend the sessions prior to making a decision regarding whether or not they will elect to do the test in 2016. OP eligible students are expected to attend. If they are not at school on those days, they will need a medical certificate. Students will remain at school for the whole school day as there are important planning meetings scheduled after the completion of the papers.
Reporting Just a reminder that the reports for Semester 2 will be in electronic format for the first time. As this is a new way of accessing student reports the instructions have been included. The procedure for accessing students’ reports will require parents to sign into Parent Lounge. To do this parents need to go to the College website and click on MyLoreto and select Parents from the drop down menu.
You will need to know your user name and password. Your user name is the account number from the parent account fee statement. If you have forgotten your password you are able to request a new one to be sent via an email on the log-on screen. Once this screen opens the Academic Reports for the students in your family will be visible. Select the reporting period and click on the name of the student that you wish to view. This will open the report. Reports for all Year 7 - 11 students will be available after 3pm on Wednesday 2 December. Reports for Semester 2 2016 will not be available prior to this time. Art Department News Year 7, Red, White and Green have completed their postcards in response to an excursion combined with English and Geography to Southbank and the question, “What does this place tell us about who we are?� Students studied artists who create works in response to place and explored a range of techniques from tonal drawing to altered photographs. Themes explored include ideas such as recognition of the Indigenous history , our multicultural society, our love of water and our love of our green spaces. Music News Music Scholarships Each year Loreto College is able to offer a limited number of Music Tuition Scholarship, thanks to the funds raised by the parents’ Music Support Group. To be eligible to apply for a scholarship, students must meet the following criteria:
Currently having private music lessons at Loreto College
Demonstrated regular attendance at lessons and application to practice
Proven commitment to and involvement in extra-curricular musical activities within the College
Family financial circumstances
Scholarship Application Forms can be collected by students from the Music Office or parents are welcome to email music@loreto.qld.edu.au and we can send you the document that way. Please note that applications are due by Monday 23 November (next week) and that no late applications will be considered. As Tuition Scholarships are awarded on a yearly basis, students who are currently recipients need to reapply to be considered for 2016.
Music Camp Thank you to all students who have applied to attend the 2016 Villa/Loreto Music Camp. Applications have now closed so if you think your daughter should be attending and you have not received the emailed Invitation, you should contact the Music Department urgently. A letter confirming your daughter’s placement on the Music Camp will be sent out to all attending students next Monday 23 November. Parent Help on Music Camp For the Music Camp to run, the Music Department needs the assistance of six parents who would be willing to spend the weekend away with us. Parents mainly provide supervision during meals/free time/bed times. With so much of the weekend dedicated to musical rehearsals, this is not an onerous job – there is plenty of time to relax and explore the Mapleton/Maleny area. We currently have three parents who are able to assist on the camp, and therefore need three more parents to volunteer. Performing Arts Guys and Dolls Musical Last Thursday, the cast and orchestra met on the MWC stage for a full read-through of Guys and Dolls. As we progressed through the script, students with a Principal or Supporting Role read their lines and sang the songs from their audition. The atmosphere in the room was electric. The chorus enjoyed the confident performances, New York accents and comic timing of our leads. There was lots of applause and a great deal of laughter as the cast and orchestra listened to the script for the first time. At the end of the rehearsal the students learnt the choreography for Sit Down You’re Rockin’ The Boat. The dedication and enthusiasm for learning choreography was impressive and the students and staff departed the rehearsal with great excitement and anticipation for continuing rehearsals next year. CaSSSA Tennis for 2016 The CaSSSA tennis program will start early next year with the Loreto Tennis Championships held on 6 and 7 February 2016. The first tennis training sessions start the week of 8 February and the first round of tennis matches starts 20 February 2016. Estimated times the teams will be playing in the competition are:
Junior teams (Year 7 and 8) will be located at the Queensland Tennis Centre, Tennyson from 10.30am to 1.30pm
Intermediate Division teams (Year 9 and 10) start warm up at 7.00am, start fixtures at 7.30am and conclude by 11.30am
Open & Senior Division games warm up at 10.00am start fixtures at 10.30am and conclude by 2.00pm
Venues for the Intermediate, Senior and Open Divisions will vary depending upon if they are home or away matches. All girls who are interested in trialling for the CaSSSA Tennis in 2016 will need to attend the trials during the alternative program day.

Year 8 Parent End of Year Celebration Social What a fun evening was had by all at the Year 8 End Of Year Celebration. A huge "thank you" to all those Parents who made the effort to come along and support our final get together of the year. It was a great vibe, fabulous venue & food, great prizes, stunning views of the river and fun festivities on the night. From our raffle on the evening we raised $250.00 for the P&F, and made Svea Sakellariou’s day. In taking out 1st prize, her family won a two night stay at The Sebel Coolangatta. We’ve all enjoyed watching our girls flourish and learn this year, and these parent social events have helped to bring the Year 8 parent community together, develop new friendships and have some fun. We look forward to the many more wonderful years ahead at Loreto for our daughters. Thank you to all the Year 8 parents for your support of this year’s parent social events.
