The types of projects MWIA sponsors include: Primary, secondary, tertiary education for children and young people. Adult education, such as life skills, vocational training, literacy and numeracy. Community development, including leadership and organisational training. Rural development. Community savings and micro-credit schemes. Health assessments, medical and surgical care, therapy and rehabilitation. Hostel accommodation and other support to enable access to health and education for people from remote and conflict areas. MWIA supports funding principles which provide opportunities for whole communities to become self–sustaining. Digging wells, training teachers, equipping clinics, supporting community gardens and running a variety of training programs enables whole communities to grow and develop. Finishing 7th overall and 7th in the Percentage Trophy the girls can feel well pleased with their efforts, as the team achieved an impressive 54 “Personal Best” times on the day. This fact alone demonstrates a commitment to personal excellence and to giving one’s best. We thank Mrs Stevens and Swimming Captains, Brittany Ryan and Samantha Crawford, for their leadership and encouragement. We also thank the spirited Year 12 and Year 8 cheer squad who gave their very best in support of the team. Well done Loreto.

WELCOME We welcome to Loreto Mrs Rosemary Oxenford who is replacing Mrs Fox and Mrs Murfett as Mrs Fox takes maternity leave. Mrs Oxenford will teach Music and Religion and she will also have particular responsibility for the Choirs. We wish Mrs Fox every blessing during the months ahead and we thank Mrs Murfett for, once again, so generously giving Loreto her support these past months. Blazer Costs The College has been advised by Rainier Design Group (the manufacturers of the College blazer) that due to rising costs in China and the fall of the Australian dollar the cost of the blazer will be increased. Art Department Week 8 and ideas that Art students have researched, developed and reflected on are starting to take shape. Year Nine Students are creating a function vessel which has been inspired by their investigation of organic forms. That began with representational drawings to develop their understanding of the organic object and then continue with a process of stylization to design the form and surface treatment of their vessel. Year Eight have explored images created by other artists, worked with mind maps and then photographs as they develop an understanding of how visual language can convey identity. They have experienced a range of painting techniques to develop the skills needed to complete their self-portrait. Year Eleven and Twelve Creative Art Students are in the final stages of hand building tiles for their mosaic bird house. On Thursday, Mrs Ashton’s Year Eleven Visual Art Students took part in a workshop with artist Henri van Noordenburg who worked with the students to further their visual arts skills through the medium of photography. UMAT is a compulsory test that is used specifically to assist with the selection of students into medicine, dentistry and health science degree programs at undergraduate level.

UMAT is held once a year usually on the last Wednesday of July. Students can repeat the UMAT if they were unsuccessful the year before.

UMAT 2015 will be held on 29 July 2015. Registration deadline is 5 June 2015, 5pm AEST. Late registrations will be accepted until 5.00pm AEST 19 June 2015, however $65 penalty fee on top of the registration fee applies.

UMAT is available to any candidate whose educational level at the time of sitting the test is their final year of secondary schooling, or higher.

Geography News Geography at the Forefront: Supporting Inspirational Women Fighting Poverty…. Next Wednesday, as part of their current unit “Striving for Global Equality”, our Year 10 Geography students are very fortunate to have the opportunity to listen to Australia born OAM recipient, Gemma Sisia, a world renowned inspirational woman, fighting poverty through increasing access to education. Gemma will be speaking to our students about her amazing journey to Africa where over 10 years ago, she established the School of St Jude near Arusha, Tanzania, a place in East Africa where access to high-quality education is out of reach for many. Having started out with one teacher and three students to now educating over 1900 of the poorest students in the area per year, Gemma’s school is living proof that “women in time will come to do much”. This visit encapsulates the message behind the Year 10 Geography unit “Striving for Global Equality”, a unit where they have been investigating various means of meeting the United Nations Millennium Development Goals, especially goals two - achieving universal primary education and three - promoting gender equality and empowering women. Speaking with Gemma this year is St Jude’s Visitor Coordinator, Felix Mollel, a local Tanzanian from the Maasai tribe, a semi-nomadic people from across Northern Tanzania and Kenya. Felix is one of over 350 local Tanzanian staff employed by the school. However, the running of her school relies totally on the generosity of private sponsors and donations, thus the reason for her Australia wide tour. French News Each term we recognise one of the countries whose languages we learn at school through organising cultural activities for the whole community to enjoy. Last Wednesday was French Day at Loreto and it was lovely to see so many staff, students and even Mary Ward herself wearing red, white and blue to mark the occasion. Lauren Causer and the Multicultural Council are to be commended for the excellent way in which they organised celebrations for French Day. The fruit tarts, pains au chocolat, croissants and éclairs were very popular at morning tea, as was the Photo Booth in front of the Eiffel Tower at lunch time. W ell done, girls – your hard work ensured that French Day was a great success! Sincere thanks also to the staff of the Languages Department for their support and assistance. As part of the celebrations, French students in Years 11 and 12 enjoyed a delicious 3 course meal at C’est Bon restaurant, Woolloongabba. As you can see from the photos, a good time was had by all! Mary Ward Connect - Kirribilli On 3 March, bright and early, six keen and excited Year 10’s Maddy Miller, Emily Quinn, Olivia Wintour, Charlotte Coorey, Spencer Gauci, Katina Yanardasis and a very happy Mrs Bongaarts boarded a plane bound for Kirribilli, Sydney. Once landed and standing near the Mary Ward Statue, greeted by our host and students from Loreto Mandeville in Melbourne, we realised how different and similar our Loreto Coorparoo is with the other schools. We have the same virtues and values but we’re different in the structure of the school, uniform and of course views (harbour vs city). Our homestay families were just incredible – kind, caring and hilarious. Outside of school, we were treated to sightseeing, three metre long pizzas and incredible pancakes! Besides all the fun and outings, we had to present to the school students and teachers how our beautiful Loreto was different and similar to theirs. We spoke to the Years 8’s, 10’s and the entire junior school at their assembly. The junior school assembly was one of the many highlights of the trip as we were treated to performances that ranged from singing to dancing to incredible piano playing. On the last day of the trip, we were given a tour by young enthusiastic junior school students, who could not let us go! Finally, we had to say a sad goodbye to Kirribilli and our wonderful hosts and new found friends. We boarded the taxi straight to the airport and before we knew it we were back in Brisbane. Mary Ward Connect - Toorak Last week from Tuesday to Friday, we were given the opportunity to travel down to Melbourne and experience life in another Loreto school, Loreto Toorak. For four days we woke up at a new house and went to school in a new school in what seemed like the freezing cold with our host sisters. During our stay at Toorak we grew close to our host sisters and enjoyed what Loreto Mandeville had to offer: From early morning rowing training to their wonderful 100+ year old mansion. Last Thursday on the 100th anniversary of Mother Gonzaga Barry's passing, we took a special trip to the Ballarat school where Gonzaga established the first Australian Loreto school. In Ballarat we visited Gonzaga's grave and had the opportunity to see the school, church and artefacts of her life which was special considering it was the 100th anniversary of her passing. In addition to visiting Mothere Gonzaga’s resting place we were able to meet with the three other schools involved in the exchange. For the days we were away we were able to learn how these other schools operated and learnt more about Mary Ward values and traditions, which unite all our schools. Mary Ward Connect was a great experience and we thank the College for the opportunity to forge new friendships, represent our school and create life-long memories. Madeline Jones

Year 7 Happenings A Journey of Discovery Year 7 have spent the beginning of this year uncovering the story of Mary Ward and her five Companions Mary Poyntz, Susanna Rookwood, Catherine Smith, Jane Browne and Winefrid Wigmore.. In their Religious Education classes they have adopted a Mary Ward as their personal focal point. It is through this learning that the girls have come to a deeper understanding of friendship. The girls have discovered many pieces of art pertaining to Mary Ward in our school. They have been studying the Mary Ward Statue and its many symbols. They have used visible thinking routines to delve into the picture of the “Open Circle of Friends” from the Painted Life of Mary Ward. They have taken a keen interest in this visual image. If you ask 7 White what they know about Susanna Rookwood, they will bombard you with information about her personality, her connections with the Royal Family, her achievements and her values. Having completed this research, the girls were then introduced to our Artist-In-Residence Jamie Maclean, from Brisbane Flying Arts. Jamie worked with the girls over a series of three lessons to create symbols that represent each of Mary Ward’s Companions. The end results are absolutely magnificent. The girls are now making many suggestions for how these images could be used in the school. We thank Mrs Leonie McCulkin, Ms Tania Gallen, Mrs Anthea Newcombe and Mr Kieran Donnelly for their organisation of this most successful project.
Retreat Day The Year Sevens recently participated in their first of many Retreat Days at Loreto which also took this theme of the “Open Circle of Friends”. The girls were very open to discussions and activities on this theme. We were visited by some modern day companions of Mary Ward who spoke to the girls about their experiences of a Mary Ward education in Loreto Schools across the world. The impact that their schooling has had on their lives gave food for thought to our girls. Our Year Seven girls now have an understanding of their role as Mary Ward’s modern day Companions. We thank Sr Anne Kelly, Abbey Martin (2014), Sarah King (2014), Brigid King (2012), Aislinn Healy (2010), Catherine Gregory (2003), Peita Ward (staff), Helen Jones (grandmother of Grace Stonely and past student of Loreto Calcutta), St Zita O’Donoghue, Sr Helen Salter, Mrs Kathy Hedemann (past staff member), Samantha Crawford (Year 12) and Grace Capelli (Year 12) for their significant contribution to the success of the day. Little known facts about the Open Circle of Friends Mary Poyntz is on the far left and she had a macabre portrait done of herself so that her suitor would not want to marry her, leaving her free to join Mary Ward. She initiated the series of paintings on Mary Ward’s life (these are much more flattering!) Jane Browne, from Shefford, sits second from the left. At 28, she was the oldest of Mary’s early companions but never sought to claim her place next to Mary due to her seniority. Catherine Smith (3rd from the left) was a close friend of Mary’s and was with her when she died. Susanna Rookwood is in the centre, in black. She was a woman with attitude! She told her father she was leaving home to be a nun by slipping him a note under his breakfast plate! Winefrid Wigmore (in the red dress) spoke five languages and often acted as a secretary for the group. She and Mary Poyntz wrote the biography of Mary Ward. Mary Ward is on the far right. Music News Music Extension Recital: Wednesday 18 March This Wednesday night at 6pm on the MWC stage, Year 12 Music Extension students will present their first assessed performance Recital for the year. Each of the students must present one three minute piece, so the concert will be fairly short, but of a very high standard. It would be great for the girls to have a supportive audience. Performers will be: Ainsley Carter (Trumpet), Lily Devine (Voice), Sarah Nicholson (Flute), Lucy Nielson (Drumkit), Emma Quinn (Voice), Lucy Towner (Clarinet), Rachelle Pinto (Voice), Ellen Stamatiou (Piano). Lunchtime Music Recitals This Friday 20 March will see the first of the Music Department’s popular series of Lunchtime Music Recitals. At these concerts, students involved in private tuition are given the opportunity to try out their solo and duet repertoire in a friendly and informal setting. Friends and family are welcome to come along and support the performers, including: Bronte Finn, Taylor Whitewood, Ella Jones-O’Brien, Chiara Pereira, Bridgette Dabinett, Daniella Pham, Annabelle Allan, Marie Falieros and Sophia Clarke. The concert will start at 12:50 pm on the Mary Ward Centre Stage. Rehearsals during exam block With exam block starting next week, it is important for all music students and parents to carefully check the Rehearsal Schedule attached to this newsletter, as a number of rehearsals will be cancelled to assist students appropriately prepare for their assessment. This schedule has been carefully organised to make sure it does not interfere with exams so where rehearsals are being run, it is highly important that all students attend. Loreto Music Festival All students are invited to enter the 2015 Loreto Music Festival. Play or sing a solo, enter a duet, or put together an acoustic ensemble or band and pit your talents against other girls from your year level/experience. Entry is free but must be completed by this Friday 20 March. Heats will run in Term 2 and finalists get to perform on stage at a concert on Wednesday 24 June. Entry forms this year are online, and you can access them via the Student Cafe. Simply go to My Resources, Class Resources, Music, Year Level, Loreto Music Festival and download the “Entry Form and Rules” document for all rules, conditions of entry, and links to the online entry forms. You can enter as many sections as you want and as many times as you want, but entries close this Friday 20 March, so don’t miss out! Congratulations To Sorelle, who performed last Saturday evening at International Women’s Day concert “Women Make It Happen” at All Hallows’. This was very early in the year to have prepared four songs to a performance standard (just six rehearsals!) so the girls should be very pleased with their progress so far in 2015. Cancellation of enrolment in Private Tuition The final date for cancellation of Term Two lessons is this Friday 20 March. If you intend to withdraw from lessons for Term Two, please let the Music Office know by that date. Autumn Concert Programs As previously advertised, the Music Department will be running three Autumn Concerts at the start of next term. Each concert will only have 6-8 ensembles so they will be short and enjoyable opportunities to hear your daughters perform the music they have worked hard to learn so far this year. Arrival time for all concerts is 6pm, there will be some light snacks, tea and coffee provided for parents while students get organised, as well as a licensed bar to purchase beer, wine and soft drinks prior to the music beginning. All concerts are expected to finish by 8:30 pm (some much earlier!). The groups performing at each concert and supplying supper are listed below, as well as the expected performance order for each event. Please note that for each group to successfully perform their prepared programs as it is highly important that all members are present. Attendance at these concerts for all ensemble members is therefore a compulsory part of their involvement in the music program. If there are exceptional circumstances which will not allow your daughter to attend, then it is vital that you as the parent communicate this to the Director of Music in writing as soon as possible. Clashes with family and other non-school events can often be resolved by careful programing of the concert order, but only if sufficient notice is given. Donations Please! The annual Loreto Trivia Night is fast approaching! Run by the Music Support Group as both a social evening and fundraiser, the Trivia Night is one of the group’s three main opportunities each year to raise the money necessary to continue to support the Beginner Ensembles Program. We are now looking for donations that could be used as prizes for the Trivia Night. Any small items that can be grouped to make prize boxes for tables of 8-10 people would be ideal and could be left at either the main College Office or the Music Office. Boxes of chocolate, $1 & $2 Scratchies, Movie / iTunes / Playstore gift cards or similar items are all fantastic ideas that would be most welcome! Music Tour By now, all students who are attending the Music Tour to Generations in Jazz should have either ordered their black performance shirt online, or brought their old shirt to the Music Office so we can organise embroidery. If you have not yet attended to this matter, please do so urgently. This week the online payment system will be opened for final tour payments, which are due to be completed by next Friday 27 March. Sports Department Congratulations
To Gaby Lynch (Year 10) who recently trialled for Composite District Hockey. Gaby has now been selected to compete at the Metropolitan East Hockey trials on 19 March at the State Hockey Centre.
To the following girls: Georgia Bishop-Cash (Year 9), Miranda Dinnen (Year 9) and Bella Danieli (Year 9) who were selected for the State Swimming Championships held at the Sleemans Aquatic Centre in Chandler on 26 March to 28 March 2015. We wish them all the best in the competition.
To Tiaan Smith (Year 10) and her partner who won the U17 division in the Queensland Junior Beach Volleyball championships a few weeks ago. She has also made the Australian Junior Volleyball U17 and with be going to Adelaide in the holidays to represent Queensland. Tiaan has also made the Australian Junior Women's Volleyball Program youth team to travel to NZ in April. We wish her every success in these major events.
Cross Country Training Training has begun for Cross Country in lead up to the Interhouse Carnival on 1 April 2015. Girls must sign up and fill in a medical form prior to training. If you have any further enquiries please see Mrs Stevens. CaSSSA Swim Carnival On Thursday 13 March the CaSSSA swim carnival was hosted by All Hallows’ School. The competition was strong at this level, yet the Loreto team did their best placing 7th position in the Percentage Trophy and 7th in the Aggregate overall. I was able to witness some inspiring performances on the day with 54 personal best performances. P&F backs new initiatives The P&F has decided to support a number of new initiatives including an upgrade of the drama room and a mothers’ weekend. These were among the agenda items discussed at the P&F meeting last Tuesday. At the meeting Curriculum Leader Performing Arts Lissa Gyte gave a presentation on plans to upgrade the drama classroom as part of expansion of the co-curricular offerings to include theatre production. Parent Ann Bickerton also outlined plans for a weekend away for mums and is forming an organising committee. The P&F will also help fund the purchase of a ‘blanket’ for heating the swimming pool. The next meeting is on Tuesday 5 May. Garry West - P&F Secretary
