Athletics Carnival A reminder that students will be attending the Interhouse carnival on Friday 27June at the University of Queensland track. This is the last Interhouse sporting event for the year and all students are expected to attend. Magazines, I pod players, MP3 players and the like are NOT permitted. Students are to wear correct school sports uniform including normal sports runners and cap and can change into house colours once they arrive at school. Students will travel to and from the carnival by bus and will receive their reports when they return to school in the afternoon. If any student is not able to be here on Friday 27 June, her report will be posted home. Students who are unable to participate for medical reasons are to see Ms Carty with a note prior to the carnival date and will be issued with a job on the day. There will be limited canteen facilities but it is strongly advised that each student brings her own lunch. Student should ensure they have a Loreto Sports hat, sunscreen and water bottle. Students are asked to ensure that they come prepared for potentially overcast and windy weather conditions with warm clothes (Loreto Jumper), spare shoes, socks and shirt, rain jacket and/or umbrella. Art Department Throughout history the artist has been intrigued by the human form. It has been portrayed in varying degrees of realism, stylisation and abstraction to communicate a diverse range of human feelings and experiences. Year 10 Art Students were given the task of working with the representation of the human form through digital images to portray selected emotions. Their art work can be seen on the following page. Music Department Music Extension Performers On Sunday 27 July these Loreto students will be providing a concert for the residents of the Casa D’Amore Retirement Village. This is a lovely way in which we can participate in our local community and also provides a nice opportunity for performance practice before their next assessment Recital. Students are asked to meet between 12:45 pm and 1pm at the venue (Park St, Coorparoo, maps available at: http://www.casadamore.com.au/). The concert will run from 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm and students will be free to leave by 2:45 pm. Crazy for You DVDs Have arrived and can be collected from the Music Office! Mr Smith’s Composition Earlier this year we unfortunately had to cancel a planned Year 9 excursion to see the Queensland Symphony Orchestra’s Annual Schools Concert. The good news is we have instead been able to organise tickets to a different QSO concert called “Mr Smith’s Composition”. We will go to this concert in the first week of Term 3 (Thursday 24 July) and take both the Year 9 and 10 Classes. “Mr Smith’s Composition” is a narrated journey that will take the students through composing a masterpiece, and learning how the instruments of the orchestra transform the notes on the page into the music we hear. Bel Canto Music Camps For many years now Bel Canto has been running quality holiday music camps for both primary and secondary students. Science News As part of the Loreto College Senior Physics Program, students in Year 11 will be visiting the Dreamworld theme park at Coomera on Monday 28 July 2014 to conduct experiments and apply what they have been studying in Kinematics, Dynamics and Mechanics to the features of the theme park. The data yielded from this outing and the concepts learned will contribute towards an extended response task for assessment. The cost for this excursion is covered within the fee structure of the school and so the only money that the students will need is for lunch, morning tea and afternoon tea, plus any spending money you deem appropriate.

SRC ‘Walkathon End Human Trafficking’ - Monday 23 June A final reminder that Monday 23 June is Loreto’s Walkathon. This event is in support of Project Futures: End Human Trafficking which works to create an empowered world where every person can take action against human trafficking and exploitation. In the year of sincerity, we are inviting every student to participate dressed as an inspirational women from any time under the theme “Sincerity Sisters.” There will be a best dressed award available for one girl from each house. The walk will take place over two hours and will finish with a lap of the oval. On this lap, girls will be required to carry two 2litre bottles of water, to symbolise the mental and physical toll that slavery places on its victims. The aim of the afternoon will be to raise awareness and funding for programs dedicated to combating human trafficking and sexual exploitation globally. A page has been set up and we would like to encourage you to support this cause. Even the smallest donation would be appreciated. The Year 12 students are looking forward to their Formal with eager anticipation. This will be a special occasion for the seniors and certainly a highlight of their final year at Loreto. A letter has already gone home about the evening and our expectations, to ensure a happy, safe and memorable evening is had by all. The girls have been fully briefed about expectations of partners and behaviour and we ask that parents support us by escorting their daughters and partners to the venue at 7.00pm and then picking them up at 11.30pm. No one will be allowed to leave the venue before this time. We again remind you that the girls do not need additional forms of transport to get them to and from the venue. Whilst the College does not support the girls attending ‘post parties’, we are fully aware that these celebrations occur. The responsibility for the safety of the girls is paramount and we urge you to ensure planned and careful supervision so as to avoid any potential harm. It is timely to remind parents about the issue of alcohol consumption by underage drinkers and that episodes of binge drinking can seriously harm the health of your daughters. Please speak with your daughters to ensure their safety. A reminder that this message pertains to ‘Pre-Formal’ gatherings also. Debating News The final round of the QDU season was completed last Wednesday evening, with the Year 8 debaters participating in their first ever short preparation debate. I witnessed two of these debates and can whole heartedly agree with the adjudicators who complimented the girls on a job well done under stressful circumstances. The results of Round 4 are shown below. Five of our teams have now qualified for the Finals, which begin next term. Congratulations to 8.2, 9.2, 10.1, 11.1 and 12.1 for winning at least three out of four debates this semester. To the other teams, I give my thanks to you for representing Loreto this season and on your behalf, thank your coaches for the time and energy they have invested in working with you. Please attend this rehearsal promptly as there will only be time for a quick run through in this short lunch! Thanks To Ainsley Carter, Year 11, who gave up her time on Saturday afternoon to help out the students of St Agnes Catholic Primary School at their public performance at Coffee Club Upper Mount Gravatt. Having booked this performance some time ago, the school’s orchestra found that 2 of their 3 trumpeters were sick on the day, so Ainsley filled in to help the band play to its potential. What a great way to provide a service in our community!

Loreto Music Festival Finals Concert The Finals Concert will be held on Wednesday 25 June from 6pm to 10pm in the Mary Ward Centre. A list of all finalists has been published on the Music Noticeboard and in previous newsletters. All Finalists who are using the provided accompanist will have rehearsals scheduled for Tuesday 24 June (again, this list is published on the Music Noticeboard). Lastly, could all Finalist please bring a plate of finger food for the supper during intermission? Any other student who are attending the Finals Concert are also encouraged to bring a plate to share as, while there are only a small number of finalists at this event, it still always draws a large audience! Symphony Orchestra Due to Villanova exam block, rehearsal on Monday 23 June will be held at Loreto. Parents should organise to collect their daughters at 5pm from the school, NOT from Villanova on this day. Bandslam The Bandslam final will be held in the MWC at lunch on Tuesday 24 June. Audience applause and involvement will be taken into consideration in the judging so make sure you come along and support your favourite band! Music Support Group The Music Support Group is a fantastic group of parents who help at concerts (canteen, raffles), run social events (Trivia Night, Live & Wired Music Festival) and fundraise (Mega-raffle, Bar at concerts) to support Music Tuition Scholarships. The group’s next meeting on Wednesday 23 July is our AGM. At this meeting we will farewell our President, Mrs Jenny Hunter, and one of our Secretaries, Mrs Caroline Fernandes, as their daughters both graduate this year. We would like to thank them sincerely for their efforts on behalf of the music students. While the group as a whole is incredibly supportive and always willing to help with all tasks, it is still important to have parents to fill these vital executive positions.
