Last Friday we gathered as a staff at the Mt Coot-tha Botanical Gardens for our annual day of Retreat. We were fortunate to be guided in the morning sessions by the Reverend Dr Denis Edwards, world renowned theologian from the Department of Theology at Flinders University. His particular scholarship is in the area of ecological theology and spirituality. He is author of several books including: Edwards, D. (2012). Jesus and the Natural World: Exploring a Christian Approach to Ecology. Mulgrave, Victoria: Garrett Publishing. Edwards, D. (2010). How God acts?: creation, redemption, and special diving action. Minneapolis, USA: Fortress Press Edwards, D. (2006). Ecology at the Heart of Faith. New York, USA: Orbis Books. Edwards, D. (2004). Breath of Life: A Theology of the Creator Spirit. Maryknoll, USA: Orbis Books. Much of his work contemplates the Christian emphasis, to be found in scripture, that calls us to the challenge of “ecological conversion”. Our new Pope also calls us to be “protectors of all the gifts of creation”. May the life giving spirit, the God in us all, give us wisdom as we seek to be loving, respectful and wise custodians of God’s bounty and magnificence. “All things the Lord has made, bless the Lord: give glory and eternal praise to him.” (Daniel 3 : 57)

Music Tour I hope members of Jazz Ensemble are still keeping Friday 19 to Monday 22 July free – because we are going to the CQ Uni Jazz Festival. More details to come as they become available! Autumn Concert One – Friday 19 April (Jazz Ensemble, Concert Bands 1&2, Guitar Ensembles 1&2, Junior & Senior Choirs, String Ensemble, String Quartet) Autumn Concert Two – Friday 26 April (Sorelle, Exit Stage Left, Flute Ensembles 1&2, Clarinet Ensemble, Percussion Ensembles 1&2, Chorale, Symphony Orchestra) These two dates form our first major performance commitments for the year and it is an expectation of membership in any school music group that ALL students involved in an ensemble attend for their concert. Concerts run from 6 pm to 9 pm and students are expected to stay for the duration of the event, participating as an audience member when not actually on stage. If this expectation causes any difficulties, then it is vital that parents contact the Coordinator of Music, Mr Ben Langford either by phone or email urgently to negotiate a solution. Parent/Student / Homeroom Teach Interviews On Tuesday, 30 April we will be conducting interviews for each student and her parent/s with one of her Homeroom teachers. The purpose of this interview is to reflect on the student’s progress and to make positive and practical plans for the future. The interviews will have a slightly different focus depending on the student’s Year Level, eg Year 8’s will reflect on the process of settling into secondary school and Year 11’s on their adjustment to senior schooling. The Year 10 interviews will form part of the development of each student’s Senior Education Training Plan.

Interviews will be conducted between 1.30pm and 6.30pm and will be for approximately 15 minutes. Information about these interviews will be sent home during this week. Classes will conclude at 12.30pm. Students may go home or be supervised at school during the remainder of the afternoon. This interview is in addition to the Parent/Student/Subject Teacher interviews held in July when parents have the opportunity to talk with each of their daughter’s teachers about her progress in particular subjects. We hope this interview opportunity will enhance communication between families and the College and our ability to provide the very best for your daughters academically and pastorally. Our next P & F meeting is on Tuesday 7 May at 7.30pm and we warmly invite parents to attend. Please consider joining other parents and members of the wider community at the Gala Ball on Saturday 1 June. It promises to be a wonderful evening. A raffle is being conducted in conjunction with the Gala Ball with a prize that will appeal to all parents! Please see the flyer in this newsletter for details. Thank you to the many parents who have paid their $15 P & F Levy with their term’s fees. This small amount per family delivers a lot of value to the school. For example, it has funded the ceiling fans in the Mary Ward Centre as well as the drop curtain that will be installed there in the June holidays. We will let you know as soon as we have decided on this year’s project. Thank you.
Science Department News Term Two is promising to be an eventful and exciting time in the Science Department. Year 8 classes are delving into atoms and molecules, our Year 9s are covering geology and electricity, while the Year 10s are looking at chemical reactions. The Year 11 Physics class will be working towards their excursion later on in the year by focussing on dynamics and energy changes. Their counterparts in Year 12 will begin the term studying electromagnetism and will then design and conduct their own extended experimental project on a topic of their choosing. The Year 11 Chemistry cohort will be conducting analytical laboratory work on water quality, while the Year 12 chemists will be learning all about dynamic equilibrium. Our four Year 12 Biology classes will be studying how organisms respond to their environment with a particular focus on cell biology and human physiology. On Monday 20 th May all Year 11 Biology students will be going to North Stradbroke Island for a Field Trip which forms an important part of their course and data collected contributes to a summative assessment item. The students will be studying Sand Dune Ecosystems, the Biology of Brown Lake as well as the Mangroves at Myora Springs. To maximise the time spent on the island we will need to have an earlier than normal start and later finish to the day. Students need to be at school at 6.50am as we will be leaving at 7.00am sharp to catch the 8am barge. The anticipated return time to Loreto is 4.30pm. All of the details of the field trip are explained in a letter that all Biology students will receive in the near future. As well as our busy “in house” program, there are some exciting external enrichment opportunities being offered. The University of Queensland and St Aidan’s Anglican Girls’ School are hosting the Aspiring Women in Science Conference over 24th - 26th May. It is aimed at girls in Years 10 to 12 wanting to continue their Science education at a tertiary level and promises to be an informative and inspiring event.
The QUT Vice-Chancellor’s STEM camp is designed to give students a taste of the science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines by engaging in a hands-on, intensive exploration of a project in their chosen discipline. Students will work in teams of 3-4 and apply their creativity and investigative skills on topics such as: addressing environmental issues; solving problems in the energy, food and medical sectors; and improving information dissemination and security. The STEM Camp is an intellectually challenging four day event, run in the mid semester holiday break in June. The camp is fully funded by QUT – there is no cost for students to attend and it is open to Year 11 students. The National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) is a twelve day program for students moving into Year 12 who are
thinking about a career in science, engineering and technology. It is held early in 2014 during the school holidays at the Australian National University, Canberra. The NYSF helps students who wish to follow careers in science, engineering and technology by introducing them to research and researchers, by encouraging the achievement of excellence in all their undertakings, and by helping to develop their communication and interpersonal skills.

Year 10 Marist Dancing Year 10 Marist Dancing starts next Tuesday 23rd April for 5 weeks. Students who have elected to attend need to be at the Loreto Service Area at 6.30pm each Tuesday evening. For the first four weeks of lessons, students will return to the College at 9.30pm. Please ensure your daughter has read the dress code attached to the original permission letter and that this is followed carefully. We have a small number of reserves to fill in for students if they are ill. Sports Department News VOLLEYBALL 2013 Round 7 Final Reports On the last Wednesday of Term 1, Loreto Volleyball teams competed in their final round of matches in the BSGSA competition. All teams played exciting games, producing an excellent standard of Volleyball. Open A – Final Placing: Second The difficult outdoor conditions experienced in the final game of the season didn't upset the concentration of the Open A team who comfortably defeated Stuartholme 3 - 0. Excellent serving and good communication throughout the match provided the basis for this very good win. Well done for an outstanding season of volleyball. Congratulations to all girls for a strong season: Taili Beausang, Carla Caputo, Kristen Feuerriegel, Kate Hutchins, Georgia Johnson, Julia Logan, Isabelle Mowen (Captain), Mia Page, Gabryela Sellars, Emily Smallhorn. Open B –– Final Placing: Fourth A convincing win to our Open B team over Mt St Michael’s, 3 sets to nil. An impressive display of attacking Volleyball and good covering in defence. Special mention to Wade Bilton who served 17 in a row to take out the second set. Congratulations to: Emmaline-Kate Ball, Wade Bilton, Madison Brown, Tahlia Hansen, Olivia Mastry, Emily McMahon, Claudia Miotti, Abigail Raison, Erin Stafford, Sarah Toohey. Junior A – Final Placing: Third The Junior A Volleyball team finished their season strongly, with a comprehensive 3 - 0 win against St Rita’s. The strong win was a credit to the 3-touch Volleyball the girls had strived for all season. This 3-touch Volleyball has really starred in the last three weeks. If the girls continue to play this brand of Volleyball throughout their Volleyball careers, they could quite become a forced to be reckoned with. On the whole, the Junior A team season, while mixed in results, was a huge success in terms of the improvement in the all-round playing ability of all girls involved. Congratulations to: Georgia Christie, Samantha Crawford, Krystal Hatzipapas, Megan Laycock, Lucy Nielson, Grace O’Shea, Kate O’Sullivan, Matilda Ruffin. Junior B – Final Placing: Fourth A close loss to Lourdes Hill College. Anja Anderson and Isobella Scott, your passing was amazing and a big SHOUT out to Lauren Gleed whose passes have improved a lot throughout the season. The girls showed a lot of passion and determination to come out undefeated for the season. All girls should be very proud of themselves and have represented Loreto in fine style. All team members are to be commended on their enormous improvement of skills and teamwork over the entire season! It has been a pleasure to coach you all. As this is the final Volleyball report for the season, I would like to extend my congratulations to the all Loreto Volleyballers on their commitment to training and performing and the manner in which they took the court from week to week. All girls played each game in true Loreto spirit with fun and determination! Isabelle Mowen led from the front always leading by example, supporting her peers and being an invaluable assistant to me. 16 Years Age Champion – Hannah Wixted 17 Years Age Champion – Emily Smallhorn Congratulations to the girls who were selected in the Cross Country Squad for 2013. The hard work has begun with training commenced over the term break. All girls should be starting the Cross Country training this week. All squad members should have received a booklet about the season with details of training and competition. The training times are: Monday (compulsory), Tuesday and Thursday afternoon from 3.30pm to 4.45pm and Tuesday and Thursday morning from 6.45am to 8.00am. All permission forms (from the booklet) and details of attendance at Cross Country meets must be submitted to the Sports Department by Wednesday 17 April. The next Cross Country meets are as follows:

Are you a parent of siblings who fight? Every day thousands of parents wake up to the challenge of dealing with children who are in conflict with their siblings. Researchers from Triple P-Positive Parenting Program at The University of Queensland are interested in seeking the views of parents of siblings and understanding and improving children’s relationships with their siblings. To do this, the research team headed by Prof. Matt Sanders, would like to invite parents of siblings to fill out a brief questionnaire highlighting their experiences raising siblings. The researchers are interested to know how being a parent of siblings impacts your family? Do you receive enough support to deal with challenging behaviour? What sort of extra help do you think you need? And how best would you like to receive support? The information provided will be used to help develop a tailored parenting program for parents who are having difficulty with their children’s sibling conflict. Participating parents will also be invited to register their interest for the trial of the program once it is available. All parents of siblings who have children aged between 2 and 10 years with no more than 4-years separating the two siblings are invited to participate in a brief questionnaire available at www.exp.psy.uq.edu.au/siblings. ROTARY CLUB OF STONES CORNER Re: Upcoming address by Dr John Herron on the ‘Danger of Drugs’ Invitation for interested Parents and Students - In guiding our teenage children through the challenges they will confront, an understanding of the possible consequences of misuse or casual trial of drugs is vital. Dr Herron has indicated to our club his willingness to address students on this subject. The Rotary Club is grateful to him and we have invited him to be our guest on Monday 29 April at the Whites Hill State College. Dr Herron is the Chairman of the Australian National Council on Drugs. He was appointed as Chairman of the Australian National Council on Drugs in February 2006. He was a Senator in the Parliament of Australia representing the State of Queensland (1990 -2002) and was Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs (1996-2001). Prior to entering Parliament he was a general surgeon for 30 years and during this time he occupied the positions of President of the Australian Medical Association, Chairman of the Australasian College of Surgeons and Chairman of the Australian Association of Surgeons of his State. He has been awarded the Bancroft Medal of the AMA (Qld), the Justin Fleming Medal of the Australian Association of Surgeons, a Citation by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, the Humanitarian Overseas Medal for his service as a Care Australia medical officer during the Rwandan crisis and the Australian Service Medal. Students from 12 selected schools and those parents who would like to accompany them are invited to come along, starting at 7.00pm and concluding at 9.00pm. There will be a Gold Coin donation supper at the end of the evening that supports a school student community project. Attendance: It is compulsory for all students in performing ensembles to attend the Concert at which their ensemble is performing. It is expected that students stay for the duration of the concert, even if their own performance has been completed. Any variation to this expectation requires written notification from parents and negotiation with the Coordinator of Music. Arrival times and venues for each ensemble are listed below. If you are in multiple ensembles, you may need to speak to your conductors to work out where to go first.
