Volume 29 - 15 September, 2015 Dear Parents & Students TIMOR LESTE IMMERSION Earlier this year, Mrs Hamilton shared with you the news from our Loreto Sisters working in Timor Leste that they had opened the first Loreto Pre-Primary School in the remote area of Gari-uai. The Pre-Primary school opened on 1 June in a refurbished community building and will later this year move to a new building, currently under construction. The full Primary School is planned to open in 2016. Timor Leste, located over 400 kilometres north of Australia, is one of the least developed countries in the world, with basic health, literacy and income levels similar to sub-Saharan Africa. According to UNICEF two thirds of the population are under the age of 25, approximately 40% of children are malnourished and more than 58% of the population is illiterate. With so many young children in need of education the school system is simply under-resourced. (Source: www.mwia.org.au) The Loreto Sisters are committed to addressing the lack of educational opportunities facing the Timorese people in the remote area of Gari-uai. On 21 September, a group of 12 senior Loreto students, accompanied by Mrs Di Hanson and Ms Emma Beach, will be travelling to Timor Leste as part of a Catholic Mission “Getting Involved Globally” international immersion experience. This group, along with Mr Kieran Donnelly, have spent much time in preparation this term. Whilst in Timor Leste, the students will visit the Loreto Sisters in Bacau, Dominican orphanages in Dili and community programs in Laleia. They will also spend some time sharing the games and beautiful resources they have prepared with the children at the Gari-uai Loreto Pre-Primary School. I hope this experience is richly rewarding for the girls and the staff and, of course, for the people in Timor with whom they will engage. May God bless them and keep them safe. Staff News I would like to thank most sincerely Ms Annie Diamond who has acted as Deputy Principal – Pastoral Care this term, and Mrs Rosemary O’Neill who has been Acting Year 12 Coordinator. Each of these wise, capable and hard-working women have provided wonderful care and leadership to the girls in their charge. We wish Mrs Barb Davies and Mrs Cathy O’Donoghue a very enjoyable extended holiday. Mrs Davies will return on 26 October. Ms Mary Hardie will be working with Dr Mulherin in the counselling area during her absence. Mrs O’Donoghue will return on 2 November. Mrs Rosemary O’Neill will be acting as Curriculum Leader - English and Mrs Anne Heathcote will take Mrs O’Donoghue’s classes until her return. Finally, we extend our best wishes to Ms Tania Gallen who will be on leave during Term 4. We look forward to all of these people returning to us refreshed and energized.

CONGRATULATIONS To Georgia Johnson (Year 12) who has been selected for the U19 Women’s Queensland Indoor Volleyball team to compete at the Australian Junior Volleyball Championships in Canberra from September 27 – October 3. Georgia is one of three Loreto students in the Queensland Elite Development Program for Volleyball at the Queensland Academy of Sport. Tiaan Smith (Year 10) and Frances Wong (Year 11) have also been selected in the program. CONDOLENCES
To Madeleine Sakellariou (Year 8) whose grandfather, Dr Don Tugby, passed away last week. May he rest eternally in God’s loving peace. Amen.

Enterprise Bargaining Process - Industrial Action Dear Parents I am writing to keep you informed about industrial action that will occur at Loreto College this week. This industrial action is linked to enterprise bargaining negotiations currently being undertaken within Queensland Catholic schools. Of the teachers and staff who are members of the Independent Education Union of Australia – Queensland & Northern Territory Branch, a majority recently voted to take industrial action in the form of a half hour stoppage on Wednesday afternoon 16 September and a one hour stoppage on Thursday afternoon 17 September. Please be assured that school will operate as usual and that this action will not impact on your daughter’s learning or supervision. It should also be noted for your information that industrial action within Catholic education is being taken on a school by school basis. Advice from Brisbane City Council regarding Parking As you are aware child safety and illegal parking around school zones remains a concern for parents, children, local residents and school alike, particularly during peak pick-up and drop-off times. Parking spaces during these times are at a premium and subsequently, competition for these spaces can lead to poor driver behaviour and potentially dangerous parking practices. Council is committed to providing education and awareness as well as a presence at schools to conduct enforcement of parking laws with a view to promoting safe parking and deterring dangerous parking practices. I would like to take this opportunity to ask that you encourage parents, guardians and visitors of your school to visit Council’s website at http://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/traffic-transport/parking-permits/parking-rules to learn more about parking legally in Brisbane. Guys and Dolls Musical Audition Information Audition Packs will be available for collection this week from Drama Studio 411. This pack will provide all the information you require to prepare for a successful audition. There will be an opportunity to be involved in Guys and Dolls as:
Principal – lead role, strong characterisation, singing and basic dancing
Supporting role – strong characterisation, some lines, may sing and/or basic dancing

Year 10 Camp A final Year 10 camp letter will be sent home this week with instructions and contact numbers for the duration of the camp. The students also had a final camp meeting during their PD lesson last week. The students will be required to be at school by 7.30 am on Wednesday 7 October. Upon arrival at school, the girls should leave their labelled camp gear in the undercroft and proceed to an allocated classroom for roll taking and instructions before the buses leave at 7.45 am. The students will bring their equipment in one of the heavy duty garbage bags to transport their gear on the bus. The foam bed mat can be kept aside providing it is clearly labelled. All students need to be prepared to board the buses with 2 litres of water, morning tea, a hat and medication, all of which should be readily accessible. Should you need to contact me on the morning of the camp departure, I will be available on the school mobile number indicated on the letter from 7am on Wednesday the 7th of October. Does your child have type 1 diabetes? Every day, thousands of Australian children suffer the effects of type 1 diabetes and families struggle with illness management and children’s behavioural and emotional adjustment. Positive Parenting for Healthy Living is an adaptation of the successful Triple P- Positive Parenting Program offering practical ideas and support for parents of children with type 1 diabetes. This innovative group program is designed to help parents manage their child’s illness, assist children in coping with their illness and emotions, and prevent and manage difficult child behaviour. Over the next few months and for a limited time only, parents of 2-10 year old children with type 1 diabetes are able to access Positive Parenting for Healthy Living Triple P as part of a University of Queensland research project. Parents will be able to attend the program free of charge, and will be asked to complete three sets of assessment measures (questionnaire and family observation) over a 6 month period, as part of the study. The Queensland Police Service and North Stradbroke Island Police would like to wish all students, parents and their families an enjoyable and safe September School Holidays this year and respectfully request that be mindful of the following advice and information with regards to those attending North Stradbroke Island this year. In previous years, North Stradbroke Island has been subject to a large influx youths which in combination with alcohol and illegal drugs has resulted in anti-social youth related activity. This year, as in previous years, the Queensland Police Service will be heavily enforcing any behaviour deemed to be anti-social, disorderly, violent, or infringing the laws legislated to protect Queenslanders. Laws to limit this behaviour include and are not limited to, noise complaints from private premises and public places, out of control events in private premises, public violence and/or intoxication, drink/drug driving, possession of illegal drugs Youths caught committing these offences in public places or private residences could be subject to the following consequences and may be charged and summonsed to appear before a magistrates Court: -
Parties in private premises where more than 12 people are gathered and any combination of three offences are occurring or likely to occur, the 'Responsible Guardian/Organiser' of the party may be receive up to three years imprisonment and up to $18,150.00 in fines plus be required to pay all costs incurred in respect to Police attendance and resources utilised that is now inclusive of the Police Helicopter.

Noise complaint attendance by Police at private premises can incur a 96 hour 'Noise Abatement Direction' to the primary occupier. Contravention of this direction may result in up to $4400.00 in fines.

Any disorderly, violent behaviour will result in on the spot fines of $341.00 and/or a summons to appear before the Magistrates Court.

More serious offences such as assaults and drug related matters could result in incarceration in a watchhouse, earliest appearance before the Magistrates Court and being placed on Bail Reporting conditions.

attendance that has resulted in youth pregnancy, transmission of STD's and injuries sustained from incidents/accidents related to intoxication and/or violence. Police advise that parents attend North Stradbroke Island with their children and reside at the same accommodation in order to properly supervise being mindful of Liquor Act Legislation that relating to minors on premises consuming alcohol whereas the 'Responsible Guardian' they can appropriately supervise any gathering. Infractions of these laws could result in fines to the Responsible Guardian. In years past, Parents have booked accommodation for their children and either not attended the North Stradbroke Island or resided at a different address. Real Estates and Resorts have policies in place forbidding this. Consequences will lead to immediate eviction and/or loss of any bond paid. The North Stradbroke Island community and Police welcome all tourists to the island and ask that they respect the laws and the environment. We further would like to extend our best wishes for a safe, exciting and happy holiday for all.
