Volume 31- 14 October, 2014 Dear Parents and Students This year’s Day of the Girl (11 October) theme is “Empowering Adolescent Girls: Ending the Cycle of Violence”. On Saturday the UN celebrated this day globally with the launch of the HeforShe campaign. I publish the following information provided to us by Sr Libby Rogerson IBVM, who holds the position as the Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation Coordinator for Loreto Australia and South East Asia. “Violence is an all too frequent accompaniment to girls reaching adolescence. A recent UN report noted that violence can begin early in girls’ lives but the gender dimensions of violence and abuse – physical, sexual, psychological – are more pronounced in adolescence. More than half of the world’s sexual assaults are against girls of 15 and under. Child marriages are likely to lead to violence, and currently, 53 countries have no legal protection for women against domestic violence. There is no place for the voices of abused girls to be heard. Female genital mutilation, although slowly declining, is a cruel introduction to adolescence, while honor killings and acid attacks are the frequent response to girls who push against the barriers of ignorance and tradition. Rape has become a weapon of war and the victims of rape, branded “unclean”, are exiled and ostracized by their communities. While some of this is largely unfamiliar to Australians it is important to note a recent research finding indicating Indigenous girls across the globe have a greater risk of experiencing violence due to the multiple and intersecting forms of discrimination they face. For women to be empowered, education, in its various forms, is the way to overcome the many barriers which limit their freedom. By 2015, 64% of the world’s illiterate population will be female. Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani education rights campaigner, shot by the Taliban, says that Education is the only solution. Nothing, no political indifference, no government inaction, no intimidation, no threats, no assassin’s bullets should ever deny the right of every single child to be able to go to school. Educated women are: more likely to marry later, less likely to suffer domestic violence, more likely to have higher incomes and live in better housing with healthier families. Narau, a 15 year old Tanzanian school girl, says “I’m not married but if it wasn’t for school, I would be married and have children by now”. So what is to be done? Launching the “HeforShe” campaign, the UN Women Executive Director, Phumizle Mlambo-Ngcuka, spoke of the pandemic of violence directed against women and called on men and boys to support the campaign. Australia is not immune to this pandemic as last year half a million women reported physical and sexual violence and we know it is the most under reported of all crimes. As educators, parents and supporters of the girl child, we must continue to help our fathers, brothers, sons and students learn non-violent means of solving disputes and urge them to be pro-active on behalf of women and girls in the workplace, in school and in social situations. Most of all, we must all work to enable girls to have a safe place where their confident, fearless voices will be heard.” Sr Libby also draws our attention to the fact that this week is Anti-Poverty Week. Globally, some good news:
Millennium Development Goal #1 “halving the population living in extreme poverty” was reached five years ahead of schedule across the entire globe; we can make a difference;
Since 1990, the UN estimates, there are four million fewer deaths each year attributed to poverty our voices have been heard. But nationally, some not so good news:
In Australia, “inequality” is rapidly growing: the wealthiest 20% account for 60% of Australia’s total wealth while the poorest 20% of households account for 1% of household wealth; we must not give up.
“Such extremes are a recipe for resentment, alienation and the erosion of trust in social structures and governments. At a time when governments, State and Federal, are cutting welfare benefits, tightening pensions and maintaining Youth and Newstart Allowances at levels considerably below the poverty line it is important that we ask the hard questions about national priorities. What kind of an Australia do we want? Who do we need to support? Our answers to these questions must be communicated. This Poverty Week why not write to your MP and let him or her know what you think about poverty in Australia.” Libby Rogerson IBVM CRUCI – Opening this Sunday I extend to all community members an open invitation to join us this Sunday afternoon for the official opening and blessing of Cruci from 2.30pm to 3.00pm. The Loreto College Tuckshop is now cashless! As was mentioned last term, the Loreto College Tuckshop is now cashless. If you have not yet setup an account for your daughter and she wishes to use the tuckshop, please set up a Flexischools account by going to www.flexischools.com.au and follow the instructions. Some students have had some small issues but these are generally due to some minor errors that occurred when the Flexischools account and card were first setup. If you are setting up an account for the first time, or your daughter has had some issues, we have some hints for you on how to fix these. 1.
Ensure you link your daughter’s Loreto ID card to the account you have setup. When you link the card number you must use your daughter’s student number which begins with an ‘s’ for student eg. s1477323. Please use a lower case ‘s’ at the beginning of the student ID number.

If you set a daily cash limit on this account your daughter will not be able to purchase anything that goes over this limit. You may like to review the tuckshop menu before you set this limit. If you do an online order this limit does not apply.
3.
There also needs to be sufficient funds in your Flexischools’ account if your daughter is to be able to buy from the tuckshop. You may consider enabling an auto top on your account once it reaches a certain level to alleviate this problem.

Art Department In Term Three Year Eight Gold and White explored how artists created portraits that went beyond the physical appearance to give the audience a deeper in sight to the personality of their subject. The students then completed self-portraits using digital photographs which were altered in Photoshop to show aspects of their own personality. You are invited to the Loreto Art Show Sunday 19 October from 3.00pm - 5.00pm in the Mulwith Art Rooms with selected works in the Cruci foyer. Loreto students are invited to preview the work in Mulwith on Friday 17 October. This Art Show celebrates the achievements of Loreto Art students from Years 8 -12. English News This week, invitations were issued to selected girls in Year 11 English to attend a meeting at lunchtime to find out more information about English Extension. It is a year only subject offered to capable English students for Year 12 next year. The meeting will be designed to present more information about the subject and to respond to queries from the students. I have invited the current teacher of the subject, Mrs Kate Thomas, and her students along to the meeting. We are hoping that suitable students will enrol in the subject next year and their response forms are due on Friday 24 October. The Year 9 students are embarking on a Poetry Unit this term and to support their writing we are hosting a poetry performance by Grin and Tonic on Friday 17 October. In addition, writer in residence poet, David Stavanger, will be holding workshops with the girls on three days: 24, 27 and 28 October. We are hopeful that these experts will be able to inspire the students to write meaningfully and creatively. Last term, I sent a number of our Year 11 short stories to Writer in Residence, Paula Weston, who had worked with the girls. I invited her to select a ‘Stand Out’ and an ‘Encouragement’ award. She chose Rachel Larkin and Sophia Clarke. I presented these girls with book vouchers yesterday on Year 11 Assembly. In addition, Paula nominated two ‘Highly Commended’ Stories which were by Isobelle Scott and Emma Lorimer. Paula very generously donated two signed copies of her recently published novel, which were also presented to these girls. Congratulations to the girls who worked very hard to produce short stories of excellent quality. Music News The Lion King – The Year 12 excursion to see this amazing stage production is now just one week away - Wednesday 22 October. Year 11s will need to wait a few weeks more until Thursday 6 November. The excursion will be supervised by Loreto Staff but transport to and from the performances needs to be organised by the students and their parents. Music Extension Recital – Last Thursday, the students from this year’s Senior Music Extension class performed their assessment in a public concert for friends and family, and what an amazing concert it turned out to be with all four students really excelling. Year 10 Camp Last week the Year 10s attended Camp Kokoda for three days of fun, challenge and personal reflection. The Year 10 camp is an important experience as the students prepare to transition from the Junior school into the Senior school. The pioneer nature of the camp encourages independence, leadership and collaboration within the group. We enjoyed excellent weather and a spirited sense of collaboration from the students who pursued the activities with openness to new opportunities and support for those around them. It was a wonderful three days and I’m sure the students will hold positive memories of this experience in the years to come. The Camp Kokoda staff spoke highly of the students in terms of their conduct and their willingness to be involved in all aspects of camp life. Live & Wired Music Festival – Don’t miss out! Sit on the green of Deshon Oval and be entertained by Sorelle, Exit Stage Left and the Big Bands from Loreto, Villanova and St Laurence’s College. We have a special guest appearance lined up by Little Girl Blue, featuring past pupil Rebecca Meimaris, as well as food stalls, Jumping Castle, Giant Chess, and a licensed bar. This Sunday 19 October on Deshon Oval from 3pm to 7pm is going to be a great afternoon for the whole family – for more information see the flyer at the end of this newsletter. Mega-Raffle – All students involved in the co-curricular music program should by now have received their booklet of 10 tickets in the Music Support Group Mega Raffle. The Music Support Group provides funding for over $7000 worth of scholarships
each year as well as frequently purchasing instruments and equipment for student use (in recent years this has included amp cases, a new baritone sax, new cymbals, a double bass, and a xylophone). These scholarships and purchases benefit ALL students in the Music Program by allowing the department to run ensembles with balanced instrumentation and adequate resources. If each family involved in the Music Program sells one ten-ticket booklet for the Raffle, we will raise approximately $4000, enabling scholarships to be offered next year. This year’s prizes are fantastic: 1st Prize $500 Cash; 2nd Prize – Chillmax Bar Fridge donated by Premier House (worth $1200); 3rd Prize Vaxair Bagless Vacuum Cleaner donated by Godfreys ($300); 4th Prize Car Service at Gladstone Garage ($300); 5th Prize – Metro Hood 4 Burner BBQ donated by Home Hardware Group ($299). (Please note that this prize order was incorrectly published in the information letter – this correct prize order appears on all tickets). Ensemble Auditions – Auditions for places in 2015 Music Ensembles will be held in the Mary Ward Centre next Sunday 26 October between 9 am and 1 pm. Audition times will be published this week. Set repertoire for students auditioning for Sorelle, Exit Stage Left, Big Band, Chorale, Percussion & Guitar will also be available this week for all singers and rhythm section players. Please collect these parts from the Music Office and prepare them prior to the Audition Day. Senior Choir & Orchestra – Please note that in preparation for the Big Event concert at Villanova, we will be running a full day rehearsal on Monday 20 October from 8:30 to 3:30 (this is a student free day so no school classes will be missed). Could students please organise their own transport directly to and from Villanova College on this day? For Senior Choir, we will also ask you to attend a rehearsal on Monday 3 November INSTEAD of your regular Tuesday rehearsal on 4 November that week. All students involved should this week have received an information sheet listing all the songs that will be performed as well as the extra rehearsals involved (including Monday 20 October, a slightly extend rehearsal on Monday 3 November and the dress rehearsal on Thursday 6 October).

TERM 4 Water Polo/Swim Squad training All girls are invited to attend swim training sessions for the Water polo swim session as well as Swim Squad training at the Loreto pool in preparation for the 2014 season. These sessions are held on Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning from 6.30am to 7.45am. Please register at the sports notice board. There is no cost for the swim sessions. All Schools’ Touch Football Loreto College had two representative teams play at the All Schools Touch Football held over three days. The U18’s team played in the A Division and the Under 15’s played in C Division. It was a wonderful opportunity for the girls to develop their skills. Social Justice Forum A forum on this year’s Social Justice Statement will be held in the St Peter & Paul’s Parish Hall, Wednesday 15 October at 7:30pm. The theme is ‘A Crown for Australia: Striving for the Best in Our Sporting Nation’. Discussion will centre around the good of sport, dark side of sport and sport and the spirit. Guest speakers include: Wally Lewis (Rugby League Champion and newsreader), Bruno Cullen (ex CEO of the Broncos), Tony Currie (former Bronco, Qld State of Origin player and Kangaroos player), Gary Brown (former Commonwealth Games Gold Medal Athlete, teacher at Iona), Sally Callie (former World Record holder in rowing, current triathlete and teacher at Brisbane Girls’ Grammar School). The night will take the form of a short talk by each speaker, addressing the issues raised in the Bishops’ Statement and answering questions from the audience. All most welcome.
