Volume 3 February 14, 2012 Dear Parents and Students From Sunday’s first reading we have (1 Corinthians 10 : 31) “So, whatever you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” The freedom which Mary Ward describes includes “an entire application and apt disposition to all good works.” To the best of our ability then, we are called to apply ourselves to work for “the greater glory of God” in whatever way seems best, right and just. I thus commend to you the efforts of our wonderful student social justice groups. In their planning for the year ahead they are keen to make a genuine difference for good. I offer heartfelt thanks and praise to all of these students and the staff who assist and encourage them, for their generosity, spirit and compassion. Thank you to Loreto’s St Vincent de Paul group; Caritas group; Interact group; Social Justice Council; Year 11 Community Service volunteers; Rosie’s volunteers; Oxfam Fair Traders; and All who support their efforts. PARENT SUPPORT AND ASSISTANCE NEEDED At last week’s P&F meeting we discussed the value and benefits to students of parental involvement and support. An excellent example of this is our Parental Music Support Group. This dynamic and committed group of parents contribute significantly to the high quality and renowned reputation of Loreto’s Music program. Through their involvement they promote increased participation and joyful engagement. Many rewards come from their time, energy and effort. In this spirit, the P&F are keen to see two other groups grow and develop to achieve similar success in line with the goals of the P&F to promote community and to support the efforts of the school. The two additional parent groups we plan to establish are: A Sports Support Group; and A Hospitality and Welcome Group (to include Year Level and Class Parent Reps). The following parents have kindly agreed to oversee the establishment of these groups: Sports Support Group: John Welch and Garry West Hospitality and Welcome Group: Mary Favios and Kerry Fowler

Elizabeth Fort and Lyndal Bray-Claridge will continue to act as a link between the P&F and the members of the Music Support Group. If you are willing and able to offer support to anyone of these groups please contact Trish Willing at the College on 3394 9913 and she will put you in contact with the relevant parent leaders (see article within regarding the Sport Support Group). Another area in which we seek particular support is Debating. We continue to have large numbers of girls interested in debating. This is a wonderful “problem” to have. The “problem” is that our staff simply cannot physically attend each and every debate for each and every team. The one teacher to every four students ratio simply makes this impossible for us to cover. This is where the involvement of parents can really help. If your daughter is in a debating team and you were to nominate as the debating team manager for her team, this would be of great assistance to us. We would be very happy to provide you with some basic training if it would help. The teaching staff at school would provide team coaching during the week and you, as Manager, could then be the coach’s “eyes and ears” at the debate, reporting back to the teacher/coach with feedback. If you think you can help in this way, please email Mrs Rosemary O’Neill on oneillr@loreto.qld.edu.au I thank you greatly for your support. COLLEGE FINANCE COMMITTEE – members sought As part of our regular rotation of members on College Council Committees, we seek expressions of interest from members of the community, with relevant financial and/or legal qualifications, experience and expertise, to join the Finance Committee. Presently we are particularly keen to hear from parents, or others, with a legal background. If you or someone you know might be suitable please submit a one page resume to the College addressed to Geoff McMahon – Chair of Finance, Loreto College Coorparoo, C/- Gail Newman (email to newmang@loreto.qld.edu.au) by Tuesday 21 February. Once again, I thank you for your support. GONSKI FUNDING ARTICLE Next Monday (20 February) the Australian Government will release its report of the Gonski Review of Funding for Schooling. This report is the first step towards the Government’s plan to introduce a new funding system for Australian schools from 2014 and it could have significant consequences for Catholic schools. We believe it is vital that Catholic school communities are well informed of the facts about school funding and are able to constructively participate in the discussions that will follow the release of this report. Some of the key facts about funding for Catholic schools are: 

Catholic schools educate 1 in 5 Australian children, yet on average operate with 10% less recurrent funding than government schools, even when parent contributions are taken into account *NB: ‘recurrent funding’ is the money received every year by a school for its day to day operations+.

On average, 53% of Catholic school income is provided by Federal government and 19% by State government, while 28% is contributed by parents and community.

On average, Catholic schools receive just 73% of the annual recurrent government funding (per student) received by government schools. Catholic schools receive $7,708 per student while government schools receive $10,562 per student.

Including government funding + parent contributions, Catholic schools have an average annual income of $10, 008 per student, while government schools receive $11,132 per student and Independent schools $13, 711. (MySchool website 2011).

Through parent and community contributions to schooling costs, Catholic schools deliver savings to Australian tax-payers of around $2.2 billion per year.

The school funding debate should not be reduced to an ‘us’ or ‘them’ argument. The success of Australia’s education system relies on children in all schooling sectors - Government, Catholic and Independent - receiving fair and equitable government support. Fair and equitable government support for Catholic schools guarantees real parental choice in education. Catholic education authorities are seeking a modest increase in funding that will assist Catholic schools to build on their capacity to provide high quality education while keeping school fees as low as possible and striving to address educational disadvantage. We encourage you to take note of the recommendations of the Gonski report and remain vigilant about the school funding policies that will be framed by government and opposition in the weeks that follow its release. For further information we invite you to visit www.fundinginfo.catholic.edu.au or contact your school principal or Diocesan education office if you have particular queries or concerns.

Library News We are launching the National Year of Reading today, Valentine‟s Day – love of reading! In the lunch hour, we are holding a Read-In, using a Read-O-Meter constructed by the Tech Council and Mr Lane-Richardson to tally the number of readers. Do encourage your daughter to join in and borrow a book. She might like to take out a Blind Date from the library. We are starting a NYR book club for students on the last Friday lunch of the month in the library. Your daughter can bring her lunch but we‟ll provide special food from books such as Bertie Bott‟s Beans from Harry Potter. All students who love2read should be there! Kathy Hedemann - Teacher-Librarian

Music Department News All Music students Are you aware that the Queensland Symphony Orchestra offers a special discount to school students? You can book 4 or more tickets to the main stage season for just $15 per concert. Details of this offer can be found at www.qso.com.au/ student.

Music Parents Thanks to all those parents who came along to our Music Support Group Welcome Supper last Wednesday – it is looking already like it will be another great year and to have so many willing helpers to share the load is a great reflection on the quality and enthusiasm of our school community! Our first tasks for the year will be to assist with the combined Loreto / Villanova Musical. We are looking for parents to help with serving meals at the Musical Camp on February 25/26 and also parents to help run supper and the bar for two of the performance nights in early March. If you would be available to do a shift on any of these dates, please contact the Music Support Group Secretaries Norah Kojrowicz (tedkoj@bigfoot.com) or Mary McMahon (pmf7@optusnet.com.au) as soon as possible.

Private Tuition Just to keep parents “in the loop”. When students leave a regular curricular class to go to a music lesson, they should ask their teacher to sign the Movement Log from the Student Handbook. When they leave their music lesson, they must ask their private tutor to add a departure time and re-sign this same entry in the Movement Log. If the lesson crosses over a morning or afternoon homeroom, then the student should go to Student Reception and sign in / out with their ID card. If you could please reinforce this system and the obvious Health & Safety implications with your daughters, that would be much appreciated.

Year 8 Brass Ensemble This week the Co-ordinator of Music, Mr Ben Langford, will visit all Year 8 classes to introduce the students to the full scholarship Year 8 Beginner Brass Ensemble. Fully sponsored by the parents Music Support Group, the Brass Ensemble gives Year 8 students the chance to “try-before-you-buy” playing music in a group. Selected students will be loaned an instrument, provided with weekly private tuition and ensemble rehearsals for the remainder of Semester One AT NO COST to parents. Students will then be given the opportunity to decide if they wish to continue into Semester Two. If they have worked well in Semester One and are keen to continue, they will then be offered an extension of this scholarship until the end of 2012. Places are extremely limited and are only available on Euphonium, Trombone, French Horn and Trumpet. If you are keen to be involved, then you must return the Application Form (received in class or from the Music Office) by this Friday 17 February as we would like to start the program next week! Science under the new Australian Curriculum so 2012 will be somewhat of a milestone for the Loreto Science Department. I wish the girls all the best in their studies and hope that they see the lab as an amazing and fun place where they can explore how the world around them works. The University of Queensland Junior Physics Olympiad (JPhO) is a 5-day hands-on immersive programme for Year 10 students being held on campus from Monday 25th to Friday 29th of June. It encourages students to expand their knowledge of physics, confront and solve problems and focus on practical learning. As many students in Year 10 have not yet formally studied physics, JPhO assumes only a strong general knowledge of science and mathematics in attendees. JPhO includes lectures, tutorials, tours and interactive workshops and students will gain an insight into the work of UQ lecturers and researchers in the school of mathematics and physics. The program provides an excellent introduction to senior physics and is a wonderful opportunity to meet like-minded students from all over the state. Any interested students can visit www.smp.uq.edu.au or see me at any time for additional information or application documents. Matt Lourigan - Science Coordinator

Sports Supporters – You’ve spoken, we’ve listened One of the significant issues raised by Loreto parents and students in the recent School Survey was the desire for improved opportunities for the girls in Loreto sports teams. The College leadership and Parents and Friends (P&F) Association want to blow the whistle and kick off into a new season of sports participation. Historically, Loreto was a founding member of the TAS group, but this membership could not continue after 2008 due to circumstances beyond our control. We have since played in the BSGSA competition (Brisbane School Girls Sporting Association) on Wednesday afternoons. This format has its limitations and is held at a difficult time for parents wanting to watch their daughters play. to watch. Loreto also played in schoolgirl netball and hockey competitions but was limited to single teams.

Where possible and viable, Loreto is now looking to expand sporting participation over time by competing in a wider range of sports with more teams. This greater participation will require more resources including coaches and managers, uniforms, equipment, entrance fees as well as our girls‟ time. Obviously, parents are essential to the success of Loreto sports. The P&F Association is therefore starting a Sports Supporters Group to support the efforts and directions of the Loreto Sports department in the best way possible to increase participation and improved outcomes for girls in Sport. We will have a meeting on at 7.30pm Tuesday 28 February in the Gonzaga Barry building to discuss items including:      

Explore possible sports and related competitions for consideration Structure of the Supporters Group Role of the Supporters Group (coach/managers, fund raising, socialising, training) Funding of teams (uniform and equipment costs, dues, contributions from school fees) Improving training facilities Parental and past pupil involvement
