FORWARD FOCUS – Year 7 to Secondary Transition Ms Carty and I are this week attending a symposium in Perth, kindly coordinated by the Brisbane Catholic Education Office, in partnership with Catholic Education WA, as part of our preparations for the transition of Year 7 into secondary in 2015.
Q: Why Perth? A: There is much we can learn from the WA experience. In 2009, the Catholic Education System in WA moved to a ‘six plus six’ model, transitioning Year 7 from primary into secondary across the State, just as we are about to do in 2015.
During our visit we therefore hope to gain rich and invaluable insights from their experience. We have a keynote address from Dr Anne Coffey, Notre Dame University who studied and researched the process from 2009 – 2010. We will also have presentations from various Principals, Heads of Middle School, Year Coordinators and School Administrators. There will be visits to various schools as well and the opportunity to meet and talk with educators ‘at the chalk face’ about their experience and their learning.
I am deeply grateful to Brisbane Catholic Education for inviting us to be participants in this important symposium and thank them for their organisation and inclusion.

Dear Parents Second-hand Uniform Trading The College is conscious of the need to provide an efficient process for families to be able to recycle their uniforms and student resources. Beginning in 2014 there will be a new system for the sale and purchase of second-hand uniforms, details of which are set out below. This move was endorsed at a meeting of the P & F late in 2012. I am delighted to inform you of the school’s new initiative to provide parents with the ability to trade second-hand items via the “Sustainable School Shop”. Families are assisted to list For Sale & Wanted advertisements online and the system then matches buyers with sellers. Results from other schools have been excellent; families have enjoyed a comprehensive and convenient method of trading these second-hand items. The Sustainable School Shop is providing complimentary Annual Family Memberships until 31st January 2014 and we would encourage parents to take full advantage of this opportunity. You need to nominate the College when you register on the Sustainable School Shop website to receive your complimentary Annual Family Membership (lasts 365 days). The service provides access to second-hand uniforms all year round. We will monitor the progress of this system for second-hand uniforms only in the initial phase and it may be extended in the future to cover other items such as books, musical instruments, calculators and the like. As a result of this change, the second-hand uniform shop will not be trading after the end of this Term and is no longer receiving supplies. TÜà WxÑtÜàÅxÇà This week we congratulate Laura Nicholls, Georgia Hillas and Katherine Ware for having their work selected for the Creative Generation Excellence Awards in Visual Art - Metropolitan Regional Exhibition. The exhibition is at Waterfront Place, 1 Eagle Street Brisbane and is on from Monday 19th August until 31st August open from 9am-5pm Monday till Friday. Georgia Hillas “Freedom from Suffering” signifies the inevitable suffering that humans endure from cultural and social aspects of life. The work epitomizes courage and the fight for freedom to recover from a period of pain, mourning and oppression to become free. The juxtaposition of the skeleton with the butterflies and soaring bird signifies the journey from suffering to freedom and the associated emotional states. Abstracted imagery symbolized the uncertainty faced when embarking on new ventures in life while leaves and vines indicate growth and evolution. Katherine Ware “Media Overload” represents the exponential influence media and technology has on humanity. The young female photographed is covered in newspaper and advertisement with negative images and words emphasised to reinforce the adverse effects of media. The greyscale of the photographs almost distort partial advertisements which is essentially what happens in reality; we skim over the truth in the media and focus on the negative aspects. This piece challenges the viewer to contemplate whether they too are influenced by media or rely too heavily on technology, posing the question of whether this is negative or detrimental to their mental health. Laura Nicholls “Connections” represents the lack of solitude present in our society, specifically amongst the teenage population. The work explores how the influence of technology has shaped the human experience of solitude within a modern context. The growing influence of technology is represented by the television sets, which, reinforce the idea that we are never truly alone anymore and this influence in our lives becomes more of a burden. The photographic images present a sense of the serene internal and external landscape, juxtaposed with incongruous pieces of technology. `âá|v axãá Open Day Thanks - Open Day on Sunday 11 August was hugely successful with over 600 people attending to see what Loreto College is all about. The Music Department presentations were made possible through the assistance of a large number of students, including members of Exit Stage Left, Percussion Ensemble One, the String Quartet, Loreto Music Festival Duets and Year 10 music classes. Thank you to all involved for your help on the day. Thanks also goes to Mr Cocking, Mrs Nielson and Ms Cohen for their work with the girls. QCMF Uniform requirements - Students are reminded of the following uniform requirements for ALL performances this weekend. All groups should wear full school winter uniform (including polished shoes, ties and stockings, not socks). Blazers or school jumpers may be worn if the weather is cool, however, they are to be left in warm-up areas and not worn onto stage. The following groups have different requirements: Sorelle & Jazz Ensemble (black tour uniform), Guitar Ensembles 1 & 2 (all black as per regular concert dress). QCMF Bus Arrangements - The full schedule for our ensemble performances at QCMF is once again included in this newsletter. Due to the timing of some of these performances (during the day or in the afternoon/early evening), the school will be providing transport to QCMF for several groups – Guitar Ensemble Two, Flute Ensemble Two and Junior Choir. PARENTS PLEASE NOTE – the transport for Guitar Ensemble Two and Junior choir is only to the performance, you will need to collect your daughters from Villanova afterwards! Please carefully note the following arrangements. Guitar Ensemble Two - Students in this group are to meet Dr Svoboda in 702 directly after school on Thursday 15 August. You will tune and get organised at school, before travelling together to QCMF by coach. Parents should collect their daughters from Villanova by the end of the section at 6:50 pm. Junior Choir - Students will attend their regular rehearsal after school on Thursday 15 August in Mulwith. At the end of the rehearsal, the girls will have a short break (for which they will be invited to bring some snacks to share) and then travel together by coach directly to QCMF. As the Junior Choir is first in their section, we would encourage students to stay on and watch the other groups perform and then hear the adjudication. Parents should collect their daughters from St James Church (Old Cleveland Road, Coorparoo) at 7:20 pm when the section ends. Flute Ensemble Two – This groups performance is during the day on Friday 16 August. Loreto will therefore provide transport and supervision both to and from QCMF for Flute Ensemble Two. If parents are able to attend, the performance will be held in the Veritas building of Villanova College starting promptly at 1:07 pm.

Important QCMF Information for Parents! Parents should please take note of the following: 1.
Parking near Villanova College is only possible on the surrounding streets and can be difficult to find. You should be sure to leave extra time before each performance to allow for finding parking spots.

Please note carefully the specific venue for your daughter’s performance. Veritas, Goold Hall, the Quadrangle and the Augustine Centre are all on site at the Villanova College (though some are at opposite ends of the school several hundred meters apart). St James’ Church is on Old Cleveland Road a short distance from Villanova and up to 10 minutes walk away from the Goold Hall (on the opposite Eight Avenue end of the school).

BE EARLY! So that performances are not interrupted, doors to venues are only opened briefly between groups. You need to plan to be seated in the audience at least one or two groups before your daughter’s performance, so as not to risk being left outside.

Entrance to all sections are ticketed for parents and friends (not performers). The ticket price is low ($5 for unlimited entry on one day or $10 for unlimited entry over all four days )and this is not money making by Villanova – the money raised goes directly towards financing the Festival.

QCMF Helpers – For many years Villanova College has run this fantastic Festival, which provides such a great performance opportunity for all our students. However, the Festival only runs so successfully with the help of many parent and student volunteers, including Loreto parents. If you are able to volunteer to fill even one helping session (normally about 3 hours long) that would be greatly appreciated. You could sell tickets, man the venue entry doors, help out backstage, compere a section – you can normally even help out at a section in which your daughter is performing when you would be there anyway! If you are able to volunteer, simply go to https://www.qcmfvolunteering.com/. The volunteer website has just been opened so at the moment you can select your desired job! Primary Music Camp – The Loreto Music Camp for local primary students will be held on Sunday 25 August. The finale concert for this event will once again feature a performance by our own Concert Band One and String Ensemble. Members of these two groups will be expected to arrive at the Mary Ward Centre in full uniform at 2:30 pm for a 3pm concert, which will finish by about 3:45 pm. A number of advanced students from both Concert Band One and String Ensemble will also be asked to attend at various times of the day to act as section leaders and instrument tutors for the younger students. Athletics Training A reminder for the Athletes there is relay training for the 100m runners on Sunday from 10.00am to 11.30am. It is essential for all athletes to be there.
CSGSSA Athletics Congratulations Loreto College will be taking up to 80 athletes to compete in the Catholic Secondary Girls School Sport competition on Monday 19 August 2013. The athletes will catch a bus at 7.15am to QE11 on the day of the carnival. A letter will be distributed to the Athletics Team including program details this week. The Year 11 students will be spectators on the day of the carnival. The 11students will be transported out to the QE11 Athletics track at the ANZ stadium. The students will leave school directly after assembly and return to school around 2.45pm to take the normal buses home. School will finish at normal time for all students including the athletes. All students are expected to be there and wear full school uniform including their hat. It is strongly advised that the girls bring a packed lunch for the day. Loreto versus Villanova Annual Match Friday 9 August saw the much anticipated annual netball game between the Loreto Open A team and Villanova’s finest. It was a really enjoyable afternoon with many supporters from both schools coming along to cheer on their teams. I am very happy to report that Loreto brought the trophy home this year defeating the boys 34 - 22. Our girls played with fierce determination and outplayed the very athletic boys with tactics and skill. All players should be commended for their good sportsmanship and spectators are likewise to be applauded for their exemplary behaviour. Well done to my team on their final game for the season. lxtÜ DD XÇzÄ|á{ _|àxÜtÜç gÉâÜá @ T VxÄxuÜtà|ÉÇ Éy UÜ|áutÇx New Farm On Friday 19 July two Year Eleven English classes embarked on an exciting excursion to the suburb of New Farm in order to gain inspiration for the upcoming unit of short story writing. Getting on the bus that morning it was apparent that the sun had purposely chosen to come out just to ensure we had premium weather. The first stop was the Story Bridge, an historical monument whose iconic iron glory still sustains itself as a modern architectural feat. As we walked across the bridge the classes were awed by the sheer noise of the cars speeding by and the daunting drop over the safe haven of the security railing. For some, the iron structure generated inspirational ideas about how the first settlers modernised the area. Others were inspired by the Brisbane River below us. Later on in the day we had the privilege of visiting the residence of the Catholic Archbishop of Brisbane, Wynberg, and the Holy Spirit Church. The excursion concluded at the precinct of James Street, a hot spot for shoppers and café enthusiasts alike. Many would agree that one of the highlights of this excursion was the hour of free-time, where we strolled into the multiple boutiques and did some window shopping. Above all as the day ended it can be thoroughly said we all enjoyed ourselves immensely. This excursion was definitely a golden opportunity presented to us students by the Loreto English Department and much inspiration was gained as a result. Michelle Godwin On Friday 19 July, half the Year 11 cohort embarked on a journey to gather insight into the local community of New Farm. Throughout this journey much was absorbed about the atmosphere of the inner city suburb. Whilst having the roar and hype of the city, New Farm also has a tranquil atmosphere. This contrast could be seen through James Street and Holy Spirit Church as well as New Farm Park and the busy Story Bridge. However the stand out of the day was the Archbishop’s home. As soon as walking through the door of the home, a gloomy, dark feeling crossed over me as the house was booming with history. The house had a musty scent to it and was decorated impeccably. The grand ballroom, lush red furniture and warmth from the carpets all seemed to give my body goosebumps as it felt like a home where paranormal activity would occur. The pictures of generations of archbishops added to this sense. Everything about the home left a ghostly and paranormal impression. This left a frightening yet exciting feeling within me. Overall, the trip to New Farm was an enjoyable day which will assist us in gathering inspiration for our imaginative stories. Luciana Vorkas ‘A chance to be inspired.’ I had held those words to be a promise and frustratingly it seemed to have come through in one way or another to many of those around me and yet I had not yet discovered any stimulus myself. Crossing the Story Bridge, though a fun expedition, ironically did not in fact present me with any ideas. Next stop, another beautiful view and I heard stories of friendship pacts, rowing competitions and dead bodies and yet not a single worthy thought had sprung to my mind. By New Farm Park I was forcibly willing myself to construct any plausible plot from the park’s serene ambiance. Gazing along the water, pushing my mind to envisage the scene before me in all its stages of history and I could see no more than a painted backdrop. Fed up with the futility of my efforts I headed back to join my classmates. However, upon retreating, something finally caught my attention. A white van was parked looking out to the park, its open door exposing an old man fast asleep. So many questions immediately buzzed in my mind and I was fervent to create my own answers. After blatantly staring at the man for a time that greatly exceeded public etiquette, I pulled myself away and adventured on with a new found enthusiasm. I soon realised that at least to me the point was not to see a picturesque view- that you could obtain from a postcard. The point was to get out and to be exposed to New Farm in its raw state. Not in perfection, but in the tiniest of details, habitually ignored, that will hopefully create the crux of a good story. If not the reason why we went, it’s the reason I’m glad we did. For this term’s unit of work in English, the Year Eleven’s were taken to various sites around Brisbane for inspiration to write a short story. My class was guided through the humble suburbs of New Farm Park and the busy, upmarket lanes of James Street. We began our tour at the monumental Story Bridge, walking below the large, symmetrical masts and beside the hustle and bustle of the city and the continuous rippling of wheels. Strolling down the many streets, we observed the slowly disappearing divide between new and old. The timeless brick homes with white picket fences and the art deco style apartments boarded with stain class windows and Church -like features sat opposite industrial apartments with modern geometric shapes and black exteriors. But the heritage of New Farm, however small, still remains abundant with anecdotes worth sharing. One of the highlights of my day was standing at the end of Abbot Street and looking down through the verdant trees lining the lane. As the thick trunks extended into an archway, my thoughts became tangled in the winding branches. The homes that lined the street were bound to hold many stories, it was just a matter of who would find them and what would occur amidst this mysterious place. Bridget Clark
