At last week’s Opening Mass we were indeed most fortunate to have with us, as special guest, Sr Margaret Mary Flynn IBVM – Province Leader for the Loreto Sisters Australia and South East Asia who joined us for the commissioning of Loreto’s newly appointed Chair of Council, Mrs Diane Bukowski. It was both a privilege and a pleasure to have Sr Margaret Mary with us on this important occasion. We thank her warmly for her a endance. We also offer par cular prayers of thanksgiving for the generous gi of service that Mrs Bukowski is offering to our community and wish her every success during her first term of appointment. To the Senior Class of 2013, we offer you our best wishes and support for the year ahead. May your final year at Loreto be all that you would want it to be and may your leadership leave an enduring legacy based upon your three goals:

TÜà WxÑtÜàÅxÇà On Monday, Year 9 &10 Art Students took part in an Art Excursion to GOMA and QAG. The Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT7) once again provided students with a diverse array of artistic forms with themes that ranged from the contemplation of the forces of the universe to amusing animations that address the ever growing world of consumerism. The Year Nine Students’ exploration of extensive use of pattern from a range of cultures will help to inform their own pottery making. Year Ten Students were focusing on Art as social comment. The hour and a half spent at the galleries gave only a brief insight to the collection. Hopefully, students will be inspired to revisit this exhibition- a very Mrs Leonie McCulkin - Art Coordinator worthwhile weekend activity. ( The APT 7 finishes April 14th).

Wxutà|Çz axãá Welcome to the new year all debaters and their parents, especially those who join us for the first time. On assembly last week, Gabi Kassulke and Mary-Kate Dennis, our Senior debating leaders, rightly acknowledged the tremendous contribution Mrs O’Neill has made to Loreto debating over the past years. As debating coordinator, she did more than attend to the myriad of administrative tasks of this role but encouraged staff and students to develop their skills in debating as well as attending as many debates as possible during each season. On behalf of the debating community, thank you! Last week Mrs O’Neill and I auditioned a pleasing number of talented Year 8 girls who wish to represent Loreto in the Queensland Debating Union competition. This year we have registered eleven teams in the competition. This week the girls will meet their coaches and preparation can begin! The first debate for Years 9 and 11 is on Wednesday March 6; for Years 10 and 12 it is on Wednesday March 13; and for Year 8, it is Wednesday March 20. When QDU notifies us of the time and venue, your daughter will be informed. Girls have been given a letter informing them of a Summer School to be run at Brisbane Boys’ Grammar on Sunday 19 February from 10.00am to 3.00pm. All Year 8 girls, all girls new to debating in other years and all Year 11 debaters are urged to attend. Music Support Group Welcome Supper The Parent’s Music Support Group meets once a month to help plan and run social events and fundraising for the Music Department. Involvement with this group is a great way to contribute to the school if your daughter is part of the music program. Come along this Wednesday 13 February to the Welcome Supper in room 605 of the Gonzaga Barry Building to find out more.
Loreto / Villanova Combined Orchestra The first rehearsal for the Orchestra will be next Monday 18 February from 3:30 pm to 5 pm. Rehearsals for the start of 2013 will be held on the MWC Stage at Loreto. A list of students who have been selected in the Orchestra will be posted on the Music Noticeboard by Wednesday this week.
Scholarship Acceptances The college offers a variety of Music Tuition Scholarships to students at the end of each year. All students who applied for these scholarships should have received a letter in December informing them of the results of that application. We are now finalising these scholarship positions and there are a few students who still need to return their acceptance slips to confirm their placement. If you are unsure if you have returned your scholarship acceptance, or never received a letter, then please contact Mr Langford at the Music Department urgently.
Brass Ensemble Information At the start of each year, Year Eight students are offered the chance to apply for a position in the Beginner Brass Ensemble. This group is designed to give students an opportunity to try ensemble music making for as low a cost as possible to parents. For students accepted into the group, all instruments are supplied by the school free of charge. Additionally, students offered places on Trombone, French Horn or Euphonium will have Music Tuition Fees substantially subsidized. Over the next two weeks, Mr Langford will speak to all year 8 classes about this ensemble, and offer students the chance to apply to play Trumpet, Trombone, French Horn or Euphonium. If your daughter is keen to try music making in a band environment but has never before had the chance to do so, then this is an opportunity not to miss! Ben Langford - Director of Music
c9 Y axãá P & F Meeting The first meeting of the year was well attended last Tuesday with a number of new faces including Community Relations & Development Manager, Catherine Shipton. We heard how the P & F ended the year in a strong financial position, and a range of issues were discussed including the master plan, upgrades to facilities in the Mary Ward Centre, an update on the route 7 bus service petition and planning for upcoming events. Please note that next month we depart from our convention of holding our meeting on the first Tuesday of the month when it will be held on Tuesday 12 March due to a clash with another event a week earlier. There will be reminders in forthcoming newsletters.
Welcome BBQ Thank you to those who attended the welcome barbecue for families of Year 8 students and families who are new to Loreto Coorparoo on Sunday. It was a great opportunity for parents who are new to the school to meet each other, other families with older Loreto students, teachers and P & F members. It also extends your daughter’s imaginative powers and experience. Please encourage your daughter to read regularly. Going to bed a little earlier and reading in bed is a good way to start. In creating the reading habit, it is the commitment to regular reading that is important rather than the length of time spent reading. If your daughter is not already in the reading habit, please encourage her to read for a short time (ten to twenty minutes) on four or five evenings per week. As a representative on LMYAC, Siobhan will collaborate with up to 60 other Year 10 students from the Brisbane Metropolitan area, to develop initiatives with Council for young people on a broad range of topics. Emi and Rachael will also work with other students as representatives on the SELN committee. SELN has been newly established this year, to gain perspective on the issues young people identify in relation to the environment and sustainability. The students will attend four formal sessions this year and have the opportunity to participate in other established Council projects and programs. LORETO INTERSCHOOL SWIM SQUAD The Interschool swim squad for 2013 has been selected and announced based on the results from the Interhouse Swimming Carnival. Training commences this Wednesday 12 February at 6.30am sharp at the Loreto Swimming pool. The training sessions are on Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning with the Loreto Swim coach, Tennille Willington. All squad members have received a booklet detailing the training program and competition commitments. The first Swim meet at Moreton Bay College will be held this Friday 15 February at from 4.00pm to 6.30pm. Transport by Bus is available from the school. All competitors need to meet Mrs Stevens in the MWC directly after Home room. Parents will need to collect their daughter at the end of the meet. Please see the booklet for details.
LORETO TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS Congratulations to all girls, particularly the Year 8 girls, who competed at the Tennis Championships last weekend. The Tennis practise matches will be conducted at the BGGS Court, Gregory Terrace, Spring Hill and Loreto College; E and D GRADES – BGGS 8.00am to 11.00am C, B and A GRADES – BGGS 12.00pm to 4.00pm All players MUST attend. Players will need to wear their PE uniform with the skirt (if already purchased), Loreto cap and bring a water bottle, sunscreen and a racquet. Please provide a healthy morning/afternoon tea to share as this is normally a practise for all our home matches. The teams will be announced this week and there will be a meeting with the teams to plan the training times. Training will begin next week starting 18 February 2013. Waterpolo Reports U14’s Team The Under 14’s again played extremely well but unfortunately let All Hallows College slip away in the 1st half. By the second half the team found some defence and started scoring goals. The girls displayed a massive amount of pride and held their game well. Coach: Oliver Chambers U15’s team had a bye.

We are hoping that this year will be a fruitful experience for those amongst us who like to speak in public, who like to argue points, who are passionate about certain topics or who wish to improve their skills in communication and delivery. There will be a meeting for all those interested on Monday 18 February in 203 at the beginning of lunch. There are some lunch time meetings planned for interested girls to learn some oral speaking skills, speech planning and communication tips. There are many events that Loreto is entering this year. They are: Lions Youth of the Year; Rostrum Voice of Youth Public Speaking Competition; English Speaking Union Competition; YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament.
Lions Youth of the Year: This is for Year 12 students only and this year Loreto has two entrants. They are Anthea Bach and Madeline Blanchfield. At the moment they are busily writing speeches for their judging on Tuesday 19 February and their interview on Saturday 16 February. Good luck to you both!
Rostrum Voice of Youth Public Speaking Competition: This competition is held in April and May and posters will appear around the school shortly. Details of speeches and dates will be in the newsletter closer to the time.
English Speaking Union Competition: This competition will be mid-year and is for juniors only.
YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament: This program is now accredited with the QSA as a community Based Learning Unit and is only available to students 15 years and older. It equips the leaders of tomorrow with the skills to change Queensland’s future. The program involves discussions with other elected members, a Residential from 29 September to 5 October and a Forum from 5 to 7 April. As nominations close on Friday 22 February, please see Mrs O’Neill for details as soon as possible if you are interested. I am very excited to be in the role of Public Speaking Coordinator this year and look forward to seeing many students experience this valuable and enriching activity.
