After months of planning, rehearsing and organising, the Musical week has at last arrived. I eagerly look forward to the show in anticipation of some wonderful performances. I thank the students, staff and supporters for their efforts and commitment to this important celebration of talent and creativity.
YEAR 11 SEMI-FORMAL How delighted I was to be able to attend this special night for the girls and their partners. I congratulate the girls on their gracious behaviour and on making the night so enjoyable for all present. There was an obvious sense of fun, joy and celebration. Thank you to Mrs Meecham for her coordination and the Year 11 Homeroom Teachers and other staff for their attendance, interest and support. I know the girls loved having you all there. CaSSSA – Interschool Swimming It is with pleasure that Loreto hosts the inaugural Interschool CaSSSA Swimming Carnival at Chandler this Thursday. This year the Catholic Secondary Girls’ Schools proudly launch a new Association for our Interschool Sporting Competition. The new Association has been formed to improve the Governance arrangements for our schools and was made possible through a grant for “Empowering Local Schools” from the previous Federal Government. CaSSSA - Catholic Secondary Schoolgirls’ Sports Association We wish our swimming squad members every success and thank them and their coaches for giving time and commitment to months of training in preparation for the carnival. On Thursday, our Year 8’s and 12’s will be attending to support the squad and to lead the cheering. Go Loreto! CONGRATULATIONS

Art Department Students in the Art Department have been engaged in researching and developing visual images in response to their given area of focus. This involves researching the work of other artists and considering how visual language is used to communicate ideas. Students have investigated possible responses to a set task using a range of processes from drawing to photography, experimentation with media, manipulation of images and reflection. Students are now working in the realization of their ideas. Year 9 are creating functional ceramic works with organic forms as inspiration. Year 10 are working with animals as metaphor in the exploration of social issues. Year 11 Creative Art Students are silk painting to create artworks for the refurbished Textiles Room. Fighting Poverty through Increasing Access to Education This Wednesday, our Year 10 Geography students are incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to hear in person the amazing story of Australia born OAM recipient, Gemma Sisia, a world renowned inspirational woman, fighting poverty through increasing access to education. Gemma will be speaking to the students about her incredible journey to Africa where nearly 10 years ago, she established the School of St Jude near Arusha, Tanzania, a place where access to high-quality education is out of reach for many. Having started out with one teacher and three students to now educating over 1600 of the poorest students in the area per year, Gemma’s school is living proof that “women in time will come to do much”. This visit encapsulates the message behind the Year 10 Geography students current unit “Striving for Global Equality”, a unit where they have been investigating various means of meeting the United Nations Millennium Development Goals, especially goals Twoachieving universal primary education and three promoting gender equality and empowering women. They have been studying various ways organisations, community groups and individuals are using education as a means of fighting poverty in Less Economically Developed Countries (LEDCS). One person who has responded to this challenge is of cour se, Gemma. However, the running of her school relies totally on the generosity of private sponsors and donations, thus the reason for her Australia wide tour. Mary Ward Connect 2014 Loreto Kirribilli, Sydney It has been a fantastic experience to accompany six girls from Year Ten Loreto Coorparoo on the Mary Ward Connect exchange program with our sister school in Kirribilli, Sydney. Yasmin Abraham, Chelsea Kuhl, Kathleen Lloyd, Zoe McNamee, Bridget Thelander and Alex White made me very proud as they were outstanding representatives of our school. We left Brisbane on Tuesday 4 March before lunch, and arrived in Kirribilli to be welcomed with a nice afternoon tea in the historic parlour put on by the Deputy Principal Mrs Berlage, the Principal Mrs Dickinson and some wonderful staff members. The grounds and views were beautiful. The girls were all nervous and anxious to meet their new friends, and did some effective mingling and networking. We were joined by our other sister school, Loreto Marryatville in Adelaide and their accompanying teacher Mrs Emblem. At the end of the afternoon tea, all the girls went home with their exchange partners. Historic reception building
On Wednesday we went for a tour of the school. First stop was the Chapel, with views of the harbour and the surrounding facilities. We were all impressed with the intricate windows of the chapel, the library, the tuckshop and the many courtyards. The girls did their presentation about Loreto Coorparoo to Year Eight and Year Ten classes and were asked interesting questions about their ties, uniform, the musical and laptops. Even though all the girls had different uniforms we all felt that we belonged to something special, and that we shared the same values of Mary Ward. It was good to see the Sincerity motto placed all around school. Because it was Ash Wednesday we went to Liturgy in Centenary Hall and then went to classes. Gerry seeing the sights
After another morning tea on Thursday, we were treated to a superb walk around the streets of Kirribilli, during which we were able to admire and appreciate all the varied architecture. We stopped at The Prime Minister’s House, Kirribilli House, and just next door the Governor General’s house, Admiralty House. We arrived back at the school in time for lunch and left for one of the highlights of the trip, an energetic walk across the Sydney Harbour Bridge and around Circular Quay all the way to the Opera House. Following this we took the Ferry across the harbour back to school. That night the girls went to a pizza dinner with their host families and had a great night. Mary Ward Connect participants
As the last day of our visit dawned on Friday we all went to mass in the Chapel. The Coorparoo girls did one more presentation to the Junior School, after which we were shown the Junior School by the adorable Year Five Kirribilli girls. Sadly we had to leave after recess to catch our plane back to Brisbane. We all felt a little teary. Thank you to the girls for being such a delightful group. Debating News Last Wednesday evening the Year 9 and 11 debating teams had their first debates of the season. Congratulations to the 9.2 and the 11.1 teams who won their debates. Loreto’s debating captain, Chantel Morris is coaching the 9.1 team and Mr Corrado is coach of the 11.1 team, and I am sure they are proud of their teams. On Friday 21 February, Ms Coleman and I ran a workshop for the Year 8 debaters. After a pizza lunch, the girls were introduced to the basics of debating. We were most impressed with the girls’ enthusiasm and willingness to participate in the activities. All Year 8 debaters have their first debate on Wednesday 19 March at Moreton Bay College. The 8.1 and 8.2 teams are on at 7:00pm and the 8.3s are on at 7:45pm. I wish the Year 10 and 12 teams the best of luck in their first debate tomorrow evening. The Year 10s are at BSHS at 7:00pm and the 12s are at St Joseph’s College Gregory Terrace at 8:15pm. Girls are advised to leave plenty of time to find the venue, to find a park (especially the inner city ones) and to find the rooms where their debates are being held. Remember that if your team is arguing the affirmative side, you must provide a chairperson and if you are negative, you must provide a timekeeper. Lions Youth of the Year Congratulations to Madeleine Lloyd and Rebecca Marshall who both won their Zone Finals on Saturday! Both girls were very impressive in their interviews, impromptu speeches and prepared speeches. Next week they go on to the Regional Brisbane Final at Leukaemia Foundation House, Dutton Park at 2.00pm. The judges at both venues last Saturday remarked on the girls’ poise and abilities. Loreto is very proud of you and your success. Well done!

St Vincent de Paul News Term One has started well for the group with the Year 11 Board members running a very successful afternoon social on Friday 21 February to welcome new and returning members. About 150 girls from Years 8 - 11 enjoyed a thoughtful presentation from the executive which provided a wonderful introduction to the work of St Vincent de Paul here at Loreto. This was followed by an hour of fun and games designed to allow the girls to get to know each other and to make new friends. The afternoon finished on a high with the traditional pizza and drinks being served. Last Thursday, 27 February, eight members of our Loreto St Vincent de Paul attended a gathering of school groups hosted by Clairvaux Mackillop for the annual Social Justice Day. Vinnies Youth organised the event with representatives from groups such as Caritas, St Vincent de Paul and Catholic Missions. Material and ideas were presented that challenged many of the myths that are presented about refugees, the homeless and other world problems. I am sure our students were inspired by speakers who are active advocates for the poor, the marginalised and those who struggle to escape violence and oppression. Thanks to these students who attended and helped to make the day so successful: Lauren Causer, Samantha Crawford, Lily Devine, Grea Effeney, Georgia Garrett, Caitlin Guarrera, Georgia Johnson and Brigitte Mastry. The next activity will be the annual ‘Guess the number of Easter eggs’ and will involve the younger girls selling guesses to raise money for the group to distribute to the various organisations supported by Loreto St Vincent de Paul. Music Department Loreto Music Festival Entries for our internal Music Festival open this week! You can enter as a vocal or instrumental soloist, in a duet, acoustic ensemble or a band and sections are available for all ages and experience levels. Auditions will start in on May 5 next term but entries close this term on Friday 21 March. Check the morning notices each day for a link to the online entry forms. Music Extension Recital The five Senior students in our Music Extension Class will perform a short assessed concert next Tuesday,18 March from 6pm to approximately 6:45pm on the MWC stage. Entry is free so come along and support some of our schools finest musicians! Beginner Brass and String Ensembles Girls in both ensembles met for the first time last Friday to begin this exciting musical adventure. First lessons completed, Instruments were allocated, and girls should now have Loan Agreement forms to return so that they can take these instruments home to begin playing! Year 9 Excursion Cancelled In last week’s newsletter, we advertised an upcoming excursion to see the QSO school’s concert. Unfortunately, the QSO has had to move the venue for this concert, which has altered the times and availability of tickets. This has meant that we are no longer able to take the Year 9 class to this event, which is very disappointing. We will be looking for an alternative concert to which we can take our Junior Classes and will publicise details when they are available. ’Crazy for You’ Assembly Performances In the week of the Musical, both Loreto and Villanova promote the fantastic work of staff and students by performing a short excerpt of the show at school assemblies. This Wednesday students from Villanova will be visiting Loreto to perform with us, and on Friday 14 we will return the favour by taking students to Villanova. On Friday, we would ask that all members of the Musical Orchestra, Follies and Leads are dropped straight to Villanova by 8.30am before school. The girls will perform throughout the morning for each assembly (the whole school cannot fit into the Hanrahan Theatre so Villa run a split assembly) and then students will be bussed back to Loreto about midday. Science News QUT Stem Camp In 2014, high-achieving Year 11 students will have an exciting opportunity to attend an intellectually challenging five day event, run in the term three holiday break, 29 September-3 October. The science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) camp is fully funded by QUT. There is no cost for students to attend. Students will experience real university laboratories and learning spaces in QUT's Science and Engineering Centre, while interacting with current QUT STEM students, academic staff and leading researchers to find out what life is like on the university campus. Students will work in teams and apply their creativity and investigative skills to topics such as environmental issues, problems in the energy, food and medical sectors, and improving information dissemination and security. Activities will reinforce the importance of STEM and link to career opportunities in those fields. CaSSSA Swimming Carnival On Thursday, 13 March the CaSSSA Cup Swimming Carnival will be held at Chandler. Loreto will be hosting the Inaugural CaSSSA Swim carnival this year. All Year 8 and 12 students will be attending to support our Swim Team. This is a wonderful opportunity for Big Sisters and Little Sisters to get to know each other and for Year 12 students to induct Year 8 students into some important Loreto traditions, such as the College war cry. Attendance is compulsory on this day as on any other. Students who do attend feel very let down by other students who stay away without valid reason. We would like this to be an occasion to build community rather than damage it. All non-attendance will be checked. Students are not to bring magazines, or electronic devices such as IPods. They will be fully engaged in cheering on our swimmers. Dress for the day for spectators is perfect formal school uniform – hat is not required. Students in the swim team will receive a letter with specific details regarding events, uniform, arrival and departure times. All students should bring food and plenty of water. Only very limited canteen facilities will be available for a short time. Students will be travelling to and from the carnival by bus. No student will be able to leave from Chandler unless they bring a parental note to Ms Carty beforehand and a parent is there to collect them by 2.00pm. Helen Carty - Deputy Principal – Pastoral Care

P & F News Special guest speaker Come along to the second P&F meeting of the year tonight at 7.30pm in Room 605 on the lower level of the Gonzaga Barry building. As flagged last week, our guest speaker Tania Gallen will talk about the ‘culture of thinking’ at the school. Among the other items on the agenda are updates on the building project, school dance and gala event, reports by the sports and music support groups, a report on the welcome BBQ, and discussions about parent coordinators, entertainment books and the weight of school bags. A small price to pay Have you enjoyed the cooling effect of the fans in the Mary Ward Centre on a hot day? Are you aware that the drop curtain allows separate classes to be held in this building at the same time? These are just two tangible examples of what the P&F has done for the school recently with its fund raising. With your support we can continue to contribute to the school for the benefit of our daughters. However you need to pay the P&F levy when you next pay your fees. At only $15 per family per term the levy (which is called a ‘contribution’ on the fees statement) delivers a lot more value to the school than you may think. It allows the P&F to continue to play its prime role which is to assist the development of students and facilitate parental involvement in the school. Garry West - P&F Secretary P & F Student Dance The P&F Student Dance (Year 8 – 12) will be held on Friday 21st March at 7pm in the Mary Ward Centre. The theme for the dance is “Once Upon a Time”. We are seeking parent volunteers to assist with jobs at the dance and the clean-up afterwards. It is a great opportunity for parents to listen to music, meet new people and be entertained. Gala Ball Committee If you like a party (and who doesn’t!) then join the P&F gala ball committee. Crazy For You Is on this week! As we enter production week I would like to thank the students, staff and parents for their long hours and tireless efforts in bringing this production together. Parents and students in the musical have already received an email regarding call times and production week instructions at Monday’s rehearsal and via email.
