I delight in sharing with you this extract from the College Captains’ Welcome Address, given at last week’s Inaugural Mass.
What is Sincerity? Sincerity is having the courage to live by truth, believing in honesty, having integrity and realising self‐acceptance. It is to “speak as we think, to do as we pretend and profess, to perform and make good what we promise, and really to be what we would seem and appear to be.” This unique value of Sincerity stems from the La n words, “sin” which means without, and “ceras” which means wax. The word sincerity can be understood simply through the history of the phrase, “without wax”. This story was first introduced through Roman and Greek ar stry, when sculptors came across a flaw in their perfect sculptures. When the ar sts found this flaw, they would fill the crack or chip with coloured wax to match the marble. The wax was said to be used as a cover‐up to mask any imperfec ons. To us, the ‘without wax’ story goes hand in hand with Mary Ward’s ideal that we should, “be such as we appear, and appear such as we are.” During your own personal Loreto journey in 2014, we ask that you be your own ar st, and be proud to stamp your sculpture ‘without wax’ to let everybody know that you are your own authen c piece added to our Loreto Museum. Be proud to let everybody see who you are, see what you believe in and know what you can contribute to the life of the College. . . . If your heart has nothing to hide, you will be filled with an everlas ng, deep truth, that will con nue to guide you as you rise above your concerns to achieve your dreams. Be proud in the knowledge that there is no other sculpture like you. You have been made with your own marble, and hidden within you are your own chips and cracks that you may or may not choose to expose. Throughout this year our virtue challenges us to embrace its meaning into our everyday lives, around our homes and school. It is through sincerity that we can all grow within these grounds, bringing something new and exci ng to the table every day.

Welcome to a new debating season! Last week, Ms Coleman, Mrs O’Donoghue and I auditioned numerous eager Year 8 students for the Queensland Debating Union teams. My thanks go to Ms Coleman and Mrs O’Donoghue for their generosity and help. Fifteen girls have been notified of their selection – they will be assigned to specific teams in the coming weeks. This year we have ten teams registered with QDU. The debaters in Years Nine to Twelve have been assigned to teams and their coaches will soon be calling for meetings. We have the first topics but until QDU provides the draw, we do not know which sides of the arguments we have or the times or venues. As soon as this information is available, the girls will be informed. All debaters should have received a letter last Friday, informing them of the QDU Summer School, which takes place at Brisbane Boys Grammar School this Sunday from 10am to 3pm. I encourage all debaters to attend but in particular, Year 8s and Year 11s should strive to go. The girls must provide their own food for the day. The first debate for Years 9 and 11 is Wednesday March 5; Years 10 and 12 Wednesday March 12; and Year 8, Wednesday March 19. I wish all debaters the best of luck and hope that they enjoy the season. The play Australia Day by Jonathan Biggins is being presented at The Playhouse at Southbank and reviews of the play have been very favourable, promising quality entertainment. This will allow the blazers to be couriered to Sydney and returned before they must be worn in Terms 3 and 4. `âá|v axãá Music Support Group Welcome Supper The parents’ Music Support Group meets once a month to help plan and run social events and fundraising for the Music Department. Involvement with this group is a great way to contribute to the school if your daughter is part of the music program. Come along this Wednesday 12 February to the Welcome Supper in room 702 of the Mary Ward Centre to find out more. Please note that this is a new venue for our meetings, caused by a variety of classroom changes due to our current building works.
Ensemble Rehearsals and Sports Trainings It is an unavoidable part of our students’ busy-ness that we have frequent clashes between Ensemble Rehearsals and Sports Trainings. Music and PE work closely together to help students meet their commitments, and frequently negotiate for students to either alternate or split rehearsals/trainings. It is a vital part of this process that students and parents communicate with Ms Stevens and Mr Langford whenever a clash is to occur so that we can help them negotiate a compromise with their conductor/coach.
Beginner Brass and String Ensembles This Wednesday, all Year 8 students will attend a presentation introducing the Loreto Beginner Brass & String Ensemble program. Through this program students are able to “try before you buy” playing a music instrument and participating in an ensemble. Best of all, the program is completely optional and completely free-of-charge. For the duration of Semester One, participating students can choose to learn Trumpet, Trombone, French Horn or Euphonium (Brass Ensemble) OR Violin, Viola, Cello or Double Bass (String Ensemble) with all instruments and music books loaned free from the school. Each week they will attend one group lesson and one lunchtime rehearsal all with a specialist tutor. At the end of Semester One parents

will receive a formal report on their daughter’s progress and will then have the option of either withdrawing from the program, or continuing into Semester Two (instrument and music book continue to be free and lessons may be part-subsidized). If your daughter expressed an interest in participating after Wednesday’s introduction, she will be given an application letter which needs to be returned to the Music Department by Monday 17 February to be considered for a place in the program (places are limited). Crazy for You There has been great collaboration and progress with the musical recently so I would like to publicly thank the parents, students and staff involved as we continue to move towards production week in March. We are attempting to put together a very complex, entertaining and lively musical. We are well on our way but there is still a long way to go!
Upcoming Rehearsals Rehearsals are scheduled for Friday 14 February 4-7pm, with the later finish time of 8pm for the Follies girls. Sunday 16 February rehearsals run 1-6pm, with the earlier start time of 10am for the Follies girls. Some additional cast members will be required from 10am - we will inform these students directly well in advance. For Sunday rehearsals, students are required to bring their own afternoon tea with them. There is also a Tuesday 21 February rehearsal 4-7pm (8pm finish for Follies girls) for all cast and orchestra. This rehearsal was not published on the initial contracts that students signed last November. For all rehearsals, students are required to be seated in the theatre prior to the starting time. There are also a growing number of students leaving laptops and school bags outside the Augustine Centre. This area is unsupervised. For all future rehearsals, students will be encouraged to place bags and belongings on the verandah between the Orchestra Room and the Playhouse for security reasons.
Costuming Requests – 'Boots and all' “Crazy For You” has a very specific ‘look’ referencing the 1930s. As such we are finding it quite challenging to source costume elements. If you have any wearable cowboy boots you could loan to us please contact Ms Julie Davis (Villanova College) urgently on jdavis@vnc.qld.edu.au. They will be taken care of and look great under stage lights!
Catering helpers Thank you to all the musical parents who kindly offered to help with the catering on the Sunday rehearsals over 23 February, 2 March and 9 March. No further help is required thanks to the generous responses from parents so far. A catering roster to parents shortly.
Hair/make-up We are still in need of a few parents with hair/make-up experience to assist with preparing students backstage prior to the dress rehearsal and four performances. Please contact the Musical Producer if you are able to help for some or all of these nights.

They are busily preparing speeches and reading about current affairs. c 9 Y axãá P & F Meeting It was wonderful to see new and familiar faces at the first meeting of the year last Tuesday. A range of topics were covered including the welcome barbecue, year level parent representatives and social events, Sports Support Group fund raising and entertainment books. Principal Cheryl Hamilton told the meeting of the progress of the building program, Year 12 results in 2013 and the whole-of-school survey findings. Community Relations and Development Manager Catherine Shipton spoke about fund raising events planned for 2014 including the gala ball, which will have a masquerade theme, and a cook book. There was also discussion about making the heating of the swimming pool the P&F funding raising project for 2014. Mark down the next meeting date – Tuesday 11 March, when Year 7 and 8 Learning Coordinator Tania Gallen will speak on developing a ‘Culture of Thinking’ at Loreto.
Welcome BBQ New families at Loreto had a chance to get to know each other better at the traditional ‘welcome barbecue’ in the Undercroft area on Sunday. Parents of Year 8 students feasted on hamburgers and sausages in bread and chatted with P & F members and school principal Cheryl Hamilton for a couple of hours. Running Club The Loreto Cross Country coaches, Andrew and Clare are providing coaching for the Loreto girls for general fitness and in preparation for the Loreto Cross Country season and the International Women’s Fun Run being held on the Sunday 9 March. Bring along lots of energy and $5.00 for the session. The training times are as follows: 3.30pm to 4.45pm on Monday, Tuesday Thursday 6.45am to 8.00am on Tuesday and Thursday morning. Meet the coaches at the Mary Ward Centre 5 minutes prior to starting.
Swim for Fitness and Stroke Development The Swim for Fitness training is on Wednesday and Friday morning from 6.45am to 8.00am at Loreto College. It is recommended that all water polo players try to attend one session for fitness.
Water Polo Training is at Loreto Pool and times are as follows: U13 & U14 - Monday at 3.30pm to 5.00pm U15 - Tuesday at 3.30pm to 5.00pm U16 & U18 - Thursday at 3.30pm at Loreto Pool. INTERHOUSE SWIMMING CARNIVAL – FRIDAY 14 February The Inter house Swimming Carnival will be held at Chandler on Friday, 14 February. Girls must wear sports uniform to school and can change into house colours on arrival at school. Girls will need to change back into sports uniform before going home. Closed in shoes must also be worn. All students will travel by bus to and from Chandler and should arrive at school no later than 8.25am. All buses will return to Loreto for a usual 3.20pm finish to the day. This is the first big Interhouse Carnival of the year. Attendance is compulsory and students are encouraged to compete and contribute to the house spirit on the day. Any student who cannot swim in events due to medical reasons should see Mrs Stevens in the Sports office prior to the carnival day to be allocated a job at the carnival. All competitors are to swim in one-piece togs, preferably Loreto togs. Each girl is encouraged to bring her own lunch and a drink as there will only be limited access to the canteen. Girls are not permitted to leave the pool area during the carnival. NO GIRLS MAY GO HOME INDEPENDANTLY FROM THE CARNIVAL UNLESS A PARENT IS ACTUALLY AT THE CARNIVAL AT 2.00PM. This facility is newly built and features state of the art laboratories and research spaces. The program offers a great opportunity for senior students to participate in real, cutting edge projects in the realm of medical research. There are 5-day immersion programs available and attendees are eligible to earn a point under the University of Queensland Bonus Ranks Scheme to assist in tertiary entry. Shorter workshops are also provided in cell and molecular biology activities. Many sessions are conducted during school holidays. This event is part of the Cross Country training program so all prospective runners must participate. Additionally, the Spirit and Sport Councils encourage all students, but Year 12’s in particular, to enter. The event is on Sunday March 9 and starts at 7am at the Cultural Forecourt, Southbank. You are able to run or walk this event. Be part of the Loreto team by entering as a member. You must pay individually to register and any request for fundraising is optional. As a school, Loreto already contributes by raising funds for cancer prevention initiatives through other events. UâÄÄxà|ÇBaÉà|vxá World Education Program (WEP) offer high school exchange to more than 20 countries across the world. The opportunity to apply for exchange is open to all students regardless of whether they have studied a foreign language or not. Benefits of going on exchange with WEP
WEP guarantee the students country of choice and program duration. WEP are able to accept and place all students who meet the selection criteria. Most non English speaking countries do not require prior language learning. Japan, China, Switzerland and France do require 2 years prior language learning. It is not a competition for places on the program. WEP is a registered student exchange organisation, meeting the State Government registration standards in QLD. *TERMS & CONDITIONS 1. The College Fee Raffle is organised by Loreto College Coorparoo and all proceeds will be directed to stage one of the Capital Campaign. 2. The cost of each ticket is $20, or 3 tickets for $50. No more than 850 tickets will be sold. Multiple tickets may be purchased. The tickets are available upon completion of the ticket form, or sold in person. Payment must be made at the time of purchase. 3. Ticket sales are open to current parents, enrolled parents and friends of Loreto College. Membership of any Loreto College Coorparoo Association or association bodies, whether executive, or as a committee member, or otherwise, will not preclude participation in this raffle. 4. 1st prize is for one year’s College tuition fees, being for 2015 only, for a student accepted or enrolled at Loreto College Coorparoo. The winner will be notified by telephone or email and their name and image will be published in the Loreto College Coorparoo newsletter. Any disputes or disagreements arising from the holding of the College Fee Raffle will ultimately be determined by the School Council. Once Council has made its determination, no other correspondence will be entered into. Prizes are not transferable to another year, another family or for cash.
