On this day (and during this week) we especially look for opportunities to celebrate women’s achievements and join the call for greater equality. As a Loreto school we particularly look to celebrate the achievements of Mary Ward International Australia’s projects which have empowered women to gain an education, generate income and support one another in the mission to seek truth and do justice. History of International Women’s Day Early 1900s – Great unrest and critical debate across the globe. Women marched in cities throughout the world demanding suffrage and equal working rights. 1910 – Second International Conference of Working Women was held in Copenhagen. Idea for an International Women’s Day proposed was unanimously accepted. 1911 – International Women’s Day (IWD) honoured for the first time in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland.

Last week Barry House held a successful fundraiser day “Barry’s Bonza BBQ” raising an impressive $1241.45 to assist the Loreto Sisters and MWIA with their vitally important work for women, children and justice. I offer my sincere thanks to the Most Reverend Mark Coleridge, Archbishop of Brisbane, for the excellent Verity Oration he gave at last 2000s – IWD is celebrated by more than 100 countries week’s annual Council Dinner. In the words of Mary Clarke, immediate around the world. It is considered a national holiday in Past President of the Loreto Past Pupils’ Association, “The Oration by more than 25 countries. His Grace was stunning in its discernment of Mary and her complete trust in God. By viewing all things through this prism she therefore formed a sense of what is true. I found solace in his assessment that she should certainly be a Saint for her impeccable life! Especially in this week of honouring women internationally, he explained that she is a model for all people, for all ages and creeds and all periods of history. He linked her thoughts and actions with those deeds we are impelled to carry out Scripture. In this way Mary consolidated her claim of always acting through the Catholic Church and acting with truth on Christ’s word.” His address provided many insightful understandings for those present on the notion of Mary Ward’s emphasis on Verity. I also offer my thanks to the Chair of Council, Mrs Diane Bukowski and the School Leadership Team who hosted the event in my regrettable and unfortunate absence. Particular thanks also to the Year 9 special helpers and Mrs Gail Newman and her team for their wonderful efforts.

PEDESTRIAN SAFETY Nothing is more important at pick-up and drop-off times around schools than the safety of our students. It is therefore vitally important that we all make safety our first priority. In my discussions with parents about the particular difficulties with Lade Street traffic congestion (in the afternoon especially) they observe, like me, that the situation would be greatly improved if all drivers and all passengers worked together as a system, in teamwork, to keep the flow moving. In the words of one parents two things would make a big difference: 1.
“If the girls moved towards the Science Block end for pick-up and

If every driver moved forward, as in normal traffic queueing, and kept moving forward towards the Science Building instead of stopping and parking (sometimes for much longer than two minutes) then the system would work so much better and prevent cars backing up around into Dale Street”.
I urge every parent and every student to please use this system for pick-up times especially. With many thanks for your support and co-operation. PARKING AROUND PHARMACY In a similar vein I ask for your support, at pick-up times especially, by please not parking at the front or side of the Pharmacy. The Pharmacy respectfully asks for support from Loreto parents and grandparents so that their customers, especially elderly people and customers with small children, are not disadvantaged. 2015 Next Step Survey The Queensland Government is conducting its annual statewide survey of all students who completed Year 12 in 2014. The Next Step survey is a brief, confidential survey that gains a comprehensive picture of the employment, study and life choices made by Queensland school completers in the year after they finish Year 12. Between March and June, all our students who completed Year 12 last year can expect to receive instructions to complete a web-based survey or a telephone call from the Queensland Government Statistician’s Office to complete the survey. Please encourage them to take part. If their contact details have changed, please assist the interviewer with their updated details or forward the survey to their new address so they can participate. Drama News - Theatre Production In 2015, the Loreto College Performing Arts department is expanding its co-curricular offerings to include a Theatre Production. Students who study Drama in Years 10, 11 and 12 will receive an expression of interest letter via their teacher in class this week. Introducing playwright Victoria Carless Loreto College is proud to announce that we have commissioned playwright Victoria Carless to create an original play script for our Drama students to perform. This is a rare chance to work with a professional playwright and see how a script is developed and realised on stage. Loreto girls will collaborate with Victoria and play a significant role in shaping this production. This is a unique opportunity for our talented Drama students, the Drama staff and the wider Loreto community. Victoria’s script will be inspired by the theme of Verity.
Victoria Carless has performance writing credits with Backbone Youth Arts, Queensland Theatre Company, Just Us Theatre Ensemble, Mudlark Theatre, The Young Company, Brisbane Writer’s Festival, ABC Radio National, New Holland Theatre, Creative Regions, State Library of Queensland, White Rabbit Theatre Ensemble, Short and Sweet, Melbourne, Gold Coast Art Centre and Full Throttle. In 2006, Victoria received Queensland Theatre Company’s George Landen Dann Award for The Rainbow Dark, published in Staging Asylum in 2013 by Currency Press. Victoria holds a PhD in theatre writing and has recently been published by Playlab for The Grand. Public performances - Friday 23 and Saturday 24 October, 2015. Peer Mentors 2015 This year again, sixteen Year 11 students have completed the Peer Skills two day workshop to train them to become Peer Helpers at Loreto for the rest of Year 11 and on to Year 12. The program, which is under the auspices of LifeLine Australia, is consistent with and supports the Pastoral Care approach to the welfare of students at Loreto College. Peer Skills recognises that when young people have difficulties, they frequently, in the first instance, turn to their peers for support rather than approaching an adult. The purpose of the training is to develop personal strengths within the participants such as self-understanding and the fostering of positive supportive relationships, as well as cultivation of greater competence in problem solving, conflict resolution, goal setting and goal achievement so that the quality of support amongst students is enhanced. The Peer Skills program is an experiential learning workshop aimed at enhancing the peer support, problem solving and help-seeking of young people. The two day workshop builds upon the peer relations skills young people already have and use daily. The program is supported by LifeLine Community Care and the workshop is facilitated by our School Counsellor, Mrs Barb Davies, and Ms Mary Hardie. Science News Applications are now open for SPARQ-Ed 2015. This program is operated by the UQ and takes place at the Translational Research Institute at the PA hospital. This facility is newly built and features state of the art laboratories and research spaces. The program offers a great opportunity for senior students to participate in real, cutting edge projects in the realm of medical research. There are five day immersion programs available and attendees are eligible to earn a point under the University of Queensland Bonus Ranks Scheme to assist in tertiary entry. Shorter workshops are also provided in cell and molecular biology activities. Many sessions are conducted during school holidays.

Any interested students can visit www.di.uq.edu.au/sparq-ed , check out the science noticeboard or see me at the College. The labs, as always are very busy at the moment. Years 7 and 8 are learning about all of the strange equipment in our labs and how to stay safe while experimenting. Our Year 9 classes are currently using online simulators to model changes in the populations of ecosystems while the mysterious world of chemical reactions is being investigated by Year 10. Our Year 12 Biology Students are embarking on a major component of their assessment for this year; Extended Experimental Investigations (EEIs). These projects require the students to design and plan their own laboratory based investigations. EEIs typically run over 6 weeks and include research, risk assessment, materials acquisition, experimental work, logbook keeping and a final report submission. One group of Yr 12 Biology students has decided to investigate the factors that affect how legumes (bean plants) interact with Rhizobium, a bacterium that converts atmospheric nitrogen into a form of nitrogenous fertiliser in the soil that plants can use. This symbiotic relationship between plant and bacterium is one of the most ecologically and agriculturally important interactions between two organisms in the entire biosphere. We are very lucky to have Dr Peter Gresshoff, director and professor at the Centre for Integrative Legume Research (CILR) University of Queensland, along with technical staff member Ms Sno Li visit us here at Loreto to mentor the girls and share their expertise in this vital area of research. We thank Dr Gresshoff and Ms Li for their time, enthusiasm and wisdom and look forward to a continuing partnership between CILR UQ and Loreto into future. Year 9 Geographers Out in the Field As part of their Geography unit “Destination Gold Coast”, the Year 9’s recently undertook a field trip to SeaWorld on the Gold Coast. Here’s what a few of them had to say: “The SeaWorld Geography excursion was a really educationally fun experience that opened my mind to the human impact that we have on the natural sea life around us. The field excursion was also really beneficial because we could study the economic, environmental and social features that determine the success of a tourist destination. I hope they continue to take Year 9's on this excursion.” Ruby O'Brien 9 Blue “The Year 9 students were very fortunate to go on an excursion to SeaWorld. Our purpose for going was to understand the social, cultural and economic features and impacts of tourism. In particular, the Dolphin show was enjoyed thoroughly by everyone and showed that tourism can not only be fun but educational.” Devaki Padhee 9 Blue “We arrived at SeaWorld at 9:30am and made our way to the conference room for a tourism education talk, where we learnt much about the history of the park, the sponsors, and the visitors – we were informed that 1.4million people visit SeaWorld every year! We were then given some time to have lunch and go on a ride. Many chose to ride the Storm Coaster and came back drenched in water. The rest of the afternoon was spent investigating animal exhibits, such as Ray Reef or Shark Bay, and determining what the positives and negatives of keeping these animals in captivity were, as well as observing how well the exhibits connect with tourists. Music News Sorelle Performance (Saturday 14 March) This weekend, Sorelle will be performing at a concert called “Women Make It Happen” to celebrate International Women’s Day. The concert will start at 6:30 pm and run for about an hour. We will need to meet at All Hallows’ school by 5:15 pm to get organised (this is a little earlier than previously advertised). Loreto Music Festival All students are invited to enter the 2015 Loreto Music Festival. Play or sing a solo, enter a duet, or put together an acoustic ensemble or band and pit your talents against other girls from your year level/experience. Entry is free but must be completed by next Friday 20 March. Heats will run in Term 2 and finalists get to perform on stage at a concert on Wednesday 24 June. Entry forms this year are online, and you can access them via the LMS. Simply go to your LMS, find Music and choose the topic “Loreto Music Festival”. Download the “Entry Form and Rules” document for all rules, conditions of entry, and links to the online entry forms. You can enter as many sections as you want and as many times as you want, but entries close next Friday 20 March, so don’t miss out! Music Support Group It was great to see a mix of new faces and experienced parents at our Music Support Group Welcome Supper last month! If you could not make it, don’t worry! The March meeting is on this Wednesday night 11 March and everyone is welcome. This month we will be preparing for the Music Concerts in early Term 2 and planning the Loreto Trivia Night, to be held on Saturday 23 May. Performance Uniform for Chorale, Big Band, Sorelle & Exit Stage Left We are currently organising the 2015 order of performance shirts for these groups. If your daughter is in one of these groups, she should have received an information letter last week. It is particularly important for students who are attending the Music Tour to look after this promptly as we will need the black performance shirts on tour. Payment is now available online – all you need to do is go to the front page of the Loreto Website, select “Make A Payment” from the options on the left, and follow the prompts! Beginner Ensembles Lessons started last week for some of the beginners and everyone else will get under way this week, including String Ensemble rehearsal at lunch on Thursday and Brass Ensemble at lunch on Friday. Loan agreements are on the way, and we would appreciate these back, as well as the Scholarship Return Slip, as soon as possible. In the meantime, students are being allocated instruments and allowed to take them home to begin practising – the more they can play while the experience is new and exciting, the more immediate progress and enjoyment they will get from their participation in the program! Music Extension Recital: Wednesday 18 March Next Wednesday night at 6pm on the MWC stage, Year 12 Music Extension students will present their first assessed performance Recital for the year. Each of the nine students must present one three minute piece, so the concert will be fairly short, but of a very high standard. It would be great for the girls to have a supportive audience for whom to perform! Ben Langford - Director of Music
We’re back for our second challenge. Already the girls have collectively covered 825km and we’re only five weeks into training. How many kilometres the squad will cover by the time the challenge is complete is difficult to predict. Don’t be surprised if it’s further than half way round Australia. This year Loreto has registered four teams into the challenge. All team members will be training weekly to build their mental and physical strength so that by the middle of July everyone will find 48km achievable and pleasant. Hopefully! The line-up for 2015:

This last two weeks have been a very busy before the season can begin. Thank you to all the staff who have helped us: kit out team leaders with medical kits; make presentations on Nutrition and Hydration; design and order team shirts in conjunction with our two sponsors EDGE Orthodontics and Clark’s Lifestyle Centre; finalised payment to enter the challenge and setup a payment system for parents. Thank you to all the Loreto staff who have helped us. We’re now enrolled and able to access our Kokoda Challenge team profiles. Cross Country Training Training has begun for Cross Country in lead up to the Interhouse Carnival on 1 April. Girls must sign up and fill in a medical form prior to training. Training will be conducted outside of school grounds at venues including Majestic Park, Mott Park and White’s Hill. Girls meet at the Mary Ward Centre at the beginning of the session.The training is on the following days: Monday 3.30pm to 5.00pm Tuesday 3.30pm to 5.00pm Wednesday 6.30am to 8.00am Thursday 3.30pm to 5.00pm Friday 6.30pm to 8.00am. If you have any further enquiries please see Mrs Stevens. CaSSSA Swim Carnival On Thursday 12 March the CaSSSA Cup Swim carnival will be held at Chandler. All Year 8 and Year 12 students will be attending the day to support our Swim Team . This is a wonderful opportunity for Big Sisters and Little Sisters to get to know each other, as well as the Year 12 students to induct Year 8 students into some important Loreto traditions such as the College War Cry. Attendance is compulsory on this day as on any other. Students who do attend feel let feel disappointed by other students who stay away without a valid reason. We would like this to be an occasion to build community rather than damage it. All non-attendance will be checked. Students are not to bring magazines or electronic devices such as ipods. They will be fully engaged in cheering for our swimmers. Dress for the day for spectators is perfect formal school uniform- hat is not required. Students in the Swim team will received a letter with specific details regarding events, uniform arrival and departure times. All students should bring food and plenty of water. Only very limited canteen facilities will be available for a short time. Students will be travelling to and from the carnival by bus. No student will be able to leave from Sleeman Sports Centre, Chandler unless they bring a parental note to Ms Carty prior to the event and the parent is there to collect their daughter by 2.00pm.

If parents intend to collect their daughter from the ‘away’ or home ‘Mansfield’ venues, a note must be given to Mrs Gore by morning tea on match day. All buses aim to return to Loreto between 5.30-5.45pm, traffic dependent! We wish all teams the best of luck. Spectators are most welcome, we’d love to see you there! CaSSSA AFL It is great to see AFL continue to grow at Loreto with two junior teams and a senior team competing in the CaSSSA competition this season. Year 11 Semi-Formal - Thank you Thankyou to students, parents and staff who worked successfully together to achieve a wonderful night of fun and celebration at the Greek Club last Friday evening. All reports from the staff at the Greek Club, the DJ’s (father and son team) and supervising staff were that the girls and their partners were beautifully behaved, friendly, and courteous throughout the night. It was lovely to see the students enjoy each other’s company in a joyous and delightful mood. Meeting Tonight One of the school departments has an interesting proposal for which it is seeking support and funding from the P&F. If you want to learn more about this then come along to the P&F meeting tonight. All are welcome to attend the meeting which begins at 7pm in the new Cruci building near the driveway on Cavendish Road. Also on the agenda are a review of P&F events held this year, an update on planning for forthcoming events and a discussion about how we plan to spend the funds raised from the levy paid by parents. P&F School Dance Friday 13 March - Years 9 - 12 We are now in count down mode to the first Loreto school dance which will be held this Friday 13 March at 7.00pm. The theme for the evening is “Around the World”. Remember the dance features a professional DJ, prizes and themed costumes. We hope the dance will be a lot of fun for both students and parents, and one we all aim to make enjoyable and safe. A huge big thank you to all those parents who have so kindly volunteered for various jobs on the night. However, we still have five places left to fill which will enable the night to run smoothly. at the Mary Ward Centre at Loreto College 415 Cavendish Road, Coorparoo QLD 4151
Please park in the surrounding streets. The Mary Ward Centre is just behind the pool. There is a pedestrian entry on Cavendish Road towards the Dale Street end. (across from the shops) There is a ramp for disabled access. Don’t forget to wear your club/school colours. Cold drinks, tea and coffee and light refreshements will be served after the presentation. This is a great opportunity for all our members to celebrate the season together, acknowledge all our talented athletes and thank all our wonderful volunteers for their hard work throughout the season. We would like to encourage all our members, family and friends to attend.
