Plans by Sheffield City Council to build homes, offices, and industrial buildings on green belt land in areas including Grenoside, Oughtibridge, Chapeltown, Ecclesfield, and Wharncliffe Side have drawn strong opposition from local residents. Concerns have been raised in North Sheffield over the potential loss of green spaces, increased traffic congestion, and the impact on local wildlife. The proposals aim to meet government housing targets outlined in the city's Local Plan. Under the council's proposals, approximately 3.6% of Sheffield's green belt land, spread across 14 sites, would be developed. Planning guidelines generally restrict building on green belt land unless "very special circumstances" outweigh the potential harm. Over 160 residents attended a meeting in Wharncliffe Side to voice their opposition, with particular anger directed at

plans for over 100 houses on green belt land between School Lane and Storth Lane. Social media comments included phrases such as "This would be a tragedy" and "Devastating news." Campaigners have described the plans as “insulting,” highlighting worries about increased pollution, environmental damage, and strain on local schools and services. Local resident David Thornton, who lives in one of the older cottages overlooking the field, said “We are in shock. Many older residents, and young children, are especially worried and upset. This field has been a popular public space for as long as people can remember. It’s located just beyond the original village green, which no longer exists, in the oldest part of the village, and is treasured by everyone who uses it. Continued on page 03
