MP Welcomes Energy Overhaul Penistone and Stocksbridge MP Marie Tidball has hailed new government reforms aimed at protecting households from rising costs and securing the nation's energy future, including a major overhaul of regulator Ofgem. Dr Tidball welcomed the plans, which focus on driving down energy bills and boosting energy security. The core of the reforms involves giving energy regulator Ofgem new powers to ensure customers are treated fairly. Key changes for Ofgem include: •
Banning bonuses for energy company bosses who break the rules.
•
Stronger powers to directly enforce customer law, bypassing lengthy court processes.
•
New measures to regulate sectors such as heating oil.
To shield household bills from future energy shocks, the government is also breaking the link between the high cost of gas and the cheaper price of renewables like solar, wind, and nuclear. Dr Tidball also supported further government action, including an increase in tax on the excess profits of energy generators whose revenues have soared. This is intended to support businesses and households dealing with the impact of instability in the Middle East on the cost of living. These updates follow other announcements, such as major planning reforms to speed up the deployment of clean power and an additional £100 million for the £1.2 billion Social Housing Fund, designed to reduce energy bills for social housing residents. Speaking about the reforms, Marie Tidball MP said she understood the impact the current crisis is having on local residents.
“With the UK facing the second fossil fuel price spike in less than five years, I know the impact this is having on the cost of living for our communities,” Dr Tidball stated. “At the same time, I listen to residents tell me too often about how they have been let down by their energy supplier and a broken system.” She added that the new powers for Ofgem would “finally clamp down on bad practice, put customers first and tackle the cost of living”. “Working towards a long-term solution through our homegrown clean energy is also crucial for our economic security, energy security and national security,” she concluded, noting that bills have already come down by 7% this month.
