Former Sheffield priest guilty of rape and indecent assaults Former Priest of ‘The Nine O’Clock Service found guilty of further charges A former priest who led Sheffield-based Christian movement the Nine O’Clock Service has been found guilty of rape and four indecent assaults. Christopher Brain, 69, used what prosecutors described as a “culture of fear” while leading the evangelical movement between 1986 and 1995. Brain, a former member of Christian rock group Present Tense, was head of the Nine O’Clock Service, which was part of the Church of England. He was previously convicted by a jury at Inner London Crown Court of 17 counts of indecent assault against nine women. On Friday, a second jury found him guilty of one count of rape and four charges of sexual assault. The verdicts mean Brain has now been convicted of a total of 22 sexual offences against 13 women.

Brain was remanded in custody and will be sentenced at a later date. The Nine O’Clock Service was founded by Brain at St Thomas’s Church in Crookes, before later moving to the Ponds Forge area of Sheffield city centre. The evangelical movement took its name from its Sunday evening services, which began at 9pm and featured live music and nightclub-style light shows. Prosecutors said Brain wielded great power as leader of the movement and abused his status to sexually abuse women who had joined what they described as effectively a “cult”. The latest convictions follow the earlier guilty verdicts for 17 indecent assaults, with the second jury considering the remaining allegations. Brain will remain in custody until his sentencing.

Full 52 bus route set to return to Hillsborough and Loxley The full 52 bus route is set to return to Hillsborough, Wisewood and Loxley in 2027, when South Yorkshire's new franchised bus network begins.

phase of the new system is scheduled to begin on 5 September 2027, with the remainder of South Yorkshire's network following in phases through to 2029.

The South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority has confirmed that the 52/52A will be among the services included in the first phase of bus franchising, which is due to begin in Sheffield and Doncaster from September 2027.

Councillor Minesh Parekh, Labour and Co-operative councillor for Crookes and Crosspool and Sheffield Labour's transport spokesperson, described the announcement as a campaign win.

Crookes and Crosspool representative Ruth Milsom also welcomed the return of the route.

The announcement has been welcomed by Labour representatives in Crookes and Crosspool, who have campaigned for the route to be restored. In August 2025, Stagecoach changed the 52 so that daytime services stopped at Crookes rather than continuing to Hillsborough. The 52A continued to serve Hillsborough, Wisewood and Loxley. The change reduced the daytime service between Crookes and Hillsborough compared with the previous arrangement. Under the planned 2027 network, the 52 will once again run be-

He said: “Residents told us how damaging Stagecoach's cut to the 52 had been, and Labour representatives kept fighting for the full route to return. “Now, through franchising, our Labour Mayor is putting it right – restoring the service and effectively doubling the frequency between Crookes and Hillsborough.” He also said the change demonstrated the difference between the current deregulated system and the forthcoming franchised network. Under franchising, the Mayoral Combined Authority will take responsibility for setting bus routes, timetables and fares. The first

She said: “Restoring the full 52 route is an early win for democratic public control working in South Yorkshire. “Franchising gives local leaders the power to protect vital connections, run more frequent buses, and hold operators to account.” The 52/52A is listed by Travel South Yorkshire as one of the services planned for the first phase of franchising in September 2027, with the route running between Woodhouse and Loxley/Wisewood. The wider South Yorkshire bus franchising programme will see routes, timetables and fares decided locally, with the first franchised services operating in Doncaster and most of Sheffield from September 2027.

Police force launches AI tool to reduce 101 calls South Yorkshire Police has launched a new "AI assistant" on its website in a bid to help reduce the number of 101 calls it receives, writes Steve Jones for BBC Yorkshire South Yorkshire Police said the Bobbi chatbot could be used for advice and answers about non-emergency incidents. It cannot be used to report a crime or as an alternative to 999. The technology, which launched on Thursday, has already been rolled out by other forces, including Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary, Thames Valley Police, and Humberside Police. Ch Supt Cherie Buttle said: "Bobbi will be a useful tool to help re-

duce calls to 101, save members of the public time, and provide concise and reliable answers to frequently asked questions." She added: "We receive more than 1,000 101 calls each day and we know that some callers can be waiting 20 minutes or more to speak to our staff during periods of high demand. "By providing quick responses to non-emergency questions, Bobbi will enable those who prefer to use the AI assistant to save time otherwise spent calling 101 and enable those who do need to speak to one of our call handlers to get through quicker. "I also recognise some people will have concerns around the use of AI, and I want to empha-

sise that Bobbi is a secure system. It is an alternative to, not a replacement, for some 101 calls." The technology will use information provided by South Yorkshire Police to answer queries, rather than other AI assistant tools which work by scouring the internet. In August the force launched a call handling system using AI software to triage calls to its non-emergency 101 number. The system was aimed at cutting waiting times for people trying to report crimes by weeding out misdirected, nuisance and prank calls.

Man jailed for 20 years after attack on woman in Park A man who attempted to rape a woman in her 70s as she walked through Concord Park, Sheffield, has been jailed for 20 years.

The woman was attacked on 25 March and suffered serious injuries after being assaulted by Ali Askre, who fled the scene after she fought him off. South Yorkshire Police launched an investigation and, using information provided by the victim and a nearby witness, detectives identified Askre as a suspect. He was arrested within four hours of the attack. The victim was able to provide detectives with important details about her attacker, which helped officers identify him through CCTV footage from the surrounding area. Police footage showed a man wearing a balaclava and gloves making his way towards the

Businesses Fear New Traffic Plans Could Hit Trade Hillsborough traders and residents have voiced major concerns over proposed transport changes in the area, warning that extended tram gate hours and reduced parking could severely impact local commerce. Hundreds of people have signed a petition urging Sheffield City Council to rethink the scheme. Under the proposals, the Hillsborough Corner tram gate operating hours would be extended from 7am to 7pm, a new 12-hour bus lane would be introduced on Middlewood

Road, several nearby streets would become one-way, and a number of parking spaces would be removed. While council officials say the measures aim to improve bus reliability, ease congestion, and boost safety for pedestrians, shop owners fear restricted car access will deter shoppers— especially those picking up bulkier goods. The public consultation remains open until 4 November.

park after leaving a property where Askre was later arrested.

While in police custody, Askre admitted the offences and told officers about his plans to attack and rape a woman. He also provided information about clothing he had discarded while fleeing the scene.

Askre, of Torksey Road West, Sheffield, was charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent and attempted rape. He pleaded guilty to both offences and was sentenced on Monday, 5 October, to 20 years, comprising 12 years in custody followed by an extended eight-year licence period. South Yorkshire Police said the victim's courage in fighting off her attacker, together with the information she was able to provide to detectives, played an important role in bringing Askre to justice.

MP welcomes new legal right to bereavement leave Penistone and Stocksbridge MP Marie Tidball has welcomed plans to give workers a new legal right to bereavement leave following the death of an immediate family member or pregnancy loss. The new rights are due to come into effect in April 2027, giving eligible employees the right to take two weeks of unpaid leave following the death of a spouse or partner, parent, adult child or sibling. The entitlement will also cover step, half, adoptive, kinship care and foster relationships. The changes will also extend bereavement leave to women and their partners following pregnancy loss before 24 weeks, including miscarriage, termination and unsuccessful IVF embryo transfers. Employees will not be required to provide evidence of their loss, with the Government saying the measure is designed to protect privacy and dignity at what can be an extremely difficult time. Leave will be able to be taken flexibly within 56 weeks of the loss, including as individual days, allowing employees to take time away from work when they need it.

UNIT 1 VICTORIA ROAD S36 1FW

Currently, there is no general legal right to bereavement leave for most employees, with time off following a bereavement generally dependent on an employer's policies and discretion. Parents who experience a stillbirth after 24 weeks or the death of a child under 18 already have a statutory right to Parental Bereavement Leave.

Dr Tidball said she had heard from local residents concerned about their rights at work following the loss of a family member. She said: “Behind every loss is a family that deserves time to heal. Time to grieve shouldn't depend on where you work. I am so grateful that our Labour Government is delivering a new legal right to bereavement leave for all employees.” She added: “This is a fundamental change that will give millions of working people the security and breathing room they need. Whilst many employees have understanding employers, who give them the time and space that they need, these measures extend protections to everyone.” Minister of State for the Future of Work Kate Dearden said: “No one should have to fight for time to grieve. These changes back people going through some of the hardest moments of life, whoever they are and wherever they work.” The Government's announcement has also been welcomed by Miscarriage UK, although the charity said it would continue to campaign for bereavement leave to be paid. The new pregnancy-loss provisions build on existing Parental Bereavement Leave for parents following a stillbirth after 24 weeks of pregnancy or the death of a child under 18. The Government is also carrying out a wider review of parental leave and pay, including proposals relating to parents of terminally ill children.

Film festival aims to put Penistone Paramount in the spotlight A three-day film festival is set to bring films, live music, performances and filmmakers to Penistone Paramount – with organisers urging local people to support the cinema at a crucial time for its future. The Penistone Film Festival returns for its second year from Friday, October 16 to Sunday, October 18, just weeks after Barnsley Council halted plans for a major redevelopment of Penistone Town Hall which would have included a new 50seat cinema screen, café and bar. Festival director Jennifer Bulcock said the timing made this year's event particularly important. “We want to work constructively with the council, the Paramount and the wider community on what might still be possible,” she said. “In the meantime, supporting the films and events already happening here is something people can do right now. “Buy tickets. Turn up. Fill the cinema.”

The festival will be based at the Paramount on Friday and Saturday, with a free festival fringe at St John the Baptist Church on Saturday. The weekend will finish at the church on Sunday with a gala dinner, awards and after-show party. The programme aims to appeal beyond film enthusiasts, bringing together silent cinema with live music, contemporary short films, youth filmmaking, accessible screenings and live performance. The festival opens at the Paramount on Friday evening with Nandor Fodor and the Talking Mongoose, starring Simon Pegg, Minnie Driver and Christopher Lloyd, followed by a Q&A. Saturday's programme includes silent films, a student filmmaker showcase and performances, while Sunday's events include the festival awards and after-show entertainment. Jennifer said the festival was designed to give local people the

opportunity to experience cinema in different ways. “It is very much something for local people to come along and enjoy, not just an event for filmmakers,” she said. “We would love to help people discover what is on their doorstep and the different ways they can join us.” The festival is being organised by a small, volunteer-led Community Interest Company, with much of the work carried out by Jennifer and her team for free. Ticket income is an important part of making the event possible. The future of the Paramount has been a major local issue since Barnsley Council announced in September that it was stopping the planned Town Hall redevelopment, citing a £30 million budget gap. The council said it could not justify the proposed £1m expansion, including the additional cinema screen, café and bar, but stressed that the existing Paramount would continue operating.

The planned second screen had previously been promoted as a way of giving the cinema greater flexibility, allowing smaller films and events to take place while the main auditorium was used for other screenings and live entertainment. Planning permission for the proposed expansion had already been granted. Jennifer believes the festival itself demonstrates the potential of the venue. “Supporting the films and events already happening here is something people can do right now,” she said. The Penistone Film Festival runs from October 16-18 at Penistone Paramount and St John the Baptist Church. Tickets and festival information are available through the Penistone Film Festival and Paramount websites. Pictured: Festival Director Jenifer Bullock is urging locals to come and support the cinema

DIY measures that householders can undertake themselves. Event Details: Date: Wednesday, 14th October Time: 6.30pm – 8.30pm Venue: St Mary’s Church Hall, Talbot Road, Penistone, S36 9ED All local residents seeking ways to improve their home comfort and lower energy costs are welcome to attend.

Sheffield to get a museum of beer, and the public gets to shape it Sheffield Beer Museum launches public consultation, starting at this year's Steel City Beer & Cider Festival Plans have been announced for a new museum dedicated to Sheffield's brewing and pub history. Ahead of any opening, Sheffield Beer Museum CIC is launching a public consultation asking the city's drinkers, brewers, publicans and residents what the museum should be, which stories it should tell, and where it belongs. Sheffield has one of the richest beer heritages in the country, from the Victorian brewing boom through the real ale revival to today's independent scene, but no permanent home for that story.

"There is more to beer than drinking, and Sheffield's thriving independent scene is a proud example of that," said George Brown, director of Sheffield Beer Museum. "It's why we're asking the city first. Before we decide anything, we want to hear what people here want to see." The team will be at the Steel City Beer & Cider Festival at Kelham Island Museum from Wednesday 21 to Saturday 24 October 2026, where visitors can meet the team, have their say and find out more. Anyone unable to attend can take part online at https://sheffieldbeermuseum.co.uk or by emailing enquiries@ sheffieldbeermuseum.co.uk.

Indoor bowling returns Residents are being invited to try their hand at indoor bowling at St Aidan’s Church and Community Hall in Oxspring this winter. The weekly sessions are open to everyone, whether they are experienced summer bowlers or have never picked up a bowling ball before. Indoor bowling takes place every Monday from 1.30pm to 3.30pm, running from October 7 until April 2027. All equipment is provided, along with light refreshments, and sessions are held in a warm and welcoming environment.

Admission is £5 per session. For more information about indoor bowling, contact Val on 07957 457681. St Aidan’s Church and Community Hall is also available to hire. Anyone interested can contact Ruth Pearson on 07709 068884 or email atkinsonruth@hotmail.co.uk to arrange a visit and discuss the facilities available. Details of events and activities at the hall can also be found on Facebook at St Aidan’s Church and Community Hall.

Kids ‘Forced’ to Mine Hunshelf Coal? NEW PATH IMPROVES ACCESS TO CORONATION PARK EXERCISE EQUIPMENT Malcolm Edwards, Chapeltown WI

A new path has been installed at Coronation Park, making it easier for residents to access and use the park’s outdoor exercise equipment.

Those responsible for the project hope the new path will be a positive addition to Coronation Park and encourage more local residents to make use of the improved facilities.

The improvement has been designed to provide better access for parishioners and make the exercise area more welcoming and accessible to everyone.

Residents are now able to enjoy easier access to the outdoor equipment as part of the park’s facilities. by Steve Moxon

MAN EXPOSES HIMSELF ON TRAIN - WITNESS APPEAL British Transport Police (BTP) detectives investigating an incident in which a man exposed himself on a train are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

The victim boarded a train from Birmingham New Street station at around 6pm on Sunday 16 August. A man, who was unknown to her, boarded at the same time and sat a couple of rows away from her. As the train neared Sheffield, the victim and man became involved in a verbal dispute. A member of train staff intervened and told the man he would have to leave the train at Sheffield due to him being intoxicated and having no ticket. As the train arrived the man exposed himself to the victim.

“There are people in this neighbourhood which can’t do without their children working in the pits. If they go to the [Poor Law] Union for relief, the Board says ‘you must get a job for your children at Mr. Jubb’s or Mr. Webster’s coal pits and let them work, girls as well as boys’. … It The man was escorted off the train and shortly would be an injury to the parents to prevent afterwards BTP officers arrested him on sus- children from working before they were 11 or picion of Outraging Public Decency. 12 years old.” He was interviewed before being released on So claimed William Jubb, owner of Hunshelf bail pending further enquiries. “The children are worth nothing less they come at eight or nine years old. We don’t employ them before and they are no good to us after they are 14, the seam of coal being only 20 inches thick and the gate [tunnel] not more than two feet high.” It almost beggars belief that mining in so tight confinement was thought viable. It was, but mine owners were all in the same boat: either use children or you don’t have a coal mine. Both mines were ‘day holes’, so-called because you exited the mine straight into the light and not up a shaft. You went along a near-level tunnel (gate) driven into the hillside; in other words, an adit. So you weren’t hindered by gravity in moving the corves (very large wicker baskets of coal), that when full weighed a very hefty twelve stones. A tramway was used at Webster’s pit – though goodness knows there was hardly the height to accommodate rails – whereas more usually the corves had sleds for bases to aid dragging. To assist in transporting such heavy loads was a girdle-and-chain arrangement: a leather belt around the hurrier’s waist, from which ran chains to go between the legs and attach to the

corf. In this way it was pulled while leaving hands free to crawl through the gate. A second hurrier was behind to push. Working an eight-hour shift, paid one shilling, the children at Jubb’s pit were expected to take a corf back-and-forth 24 times. The distance at the time from coal face to the entrance was 150 yards – at Webster’s it was 120 yards. The weight together with the awkwardness of the tiny space must have been dauntingly tough labour, yet the interviewed hurriers were a non-complaining bunch. And their testimony seems not to have been under duress. The Rev. William Irving of Bolsterstone Church told Symons: “I believe they are all well treated. I never heard any complaints from the children or their parents to the contrary”. So how unsafe were these day holes? There’s no official record of accidents, but Irving said there were none he was aware of. With no shaft, very hard rock above the coal precluding roof fall, and virtually no black damp (air minus oxygen replaced by CO2 and water vapour), the main threat would be laden corves. A boy run over by a corf was the sole death I can find: on March 20, 1859, in Jubb’s Hunshelf Colliery. No age is given, and the stated name, Charles Morton, is not the boy’s but that of the man filing the cursory report, the H.M. Inspector of Mines for Yorkshire. How invisible can you get? It looks like safety was not the real concern of the Commission. The consequent Mines and Collieries Act 1842 responded to the famous moral panic about the discovery, in the heat of the Hunshelf mines, of naked male hewers and bare-breasted female hurriers. It was merely assumed, on no evidence, there must be below-ground hanky-panky, despite everyone black bright, exhausted, struggling for room just for one, and unable to see anybody! A blanket ban was placed on employing girls and women. Boys continued to be allowed, as long as they were aged 10 plus, so more of them took the place of the girls. Yes, many more boys were engaged in the wake of the Act than hitherto. So much for much-vaunted Victorian reform.

Four in court over murder of newborn baby Four people accused of murdering a newborn baby at a house in Sheffield have appeared in court, writes Emily Johnson for BBC News. Maria Skopova suffered 33 wounds in 15 separate stabbings on 30 August - the day she was born - before being found by police at a house in Holywell Heights, in the Wincobank area of the city. Andrea Skopova, 20, Peter Horvath, 19, Peter Horvath, 38, and Nina Horvathova, 37, appeared earlier at Sheffield Crown Court charged with murder. A 15-year-old girl charged with perverting the course of justice also appeared. No pleas were entered by the defendants on Friday and a further hearing was fixed for 14 December. The adults, all Slovakian nationals, were remanded into custody by Judge Jeremy Richardson. The girl was remanded into youth custody.

Horvath Jnr, Horvath Snr and Horvathova, all of Holywell Heights, and Skopova, of Robey Street, Grimesthorpe, Sheffield, are also charged with causing or allowing the death of a child, and perverting the course of justice by cleaning the scene of the alleged crime. A trial lasting up to seven weeks is expected to take place from 12 April. At a previous hearing, the court was told Maria had been found on top of a washing machine in an outhouse at the property. An inquest into the death of the baby girl was opened on Thursday and has been adjourned until 25 March due to the ongoing criminal proceedings. Senior coroner Tanyka Rawden told Sheffield's Medico-Legal Centre when the inquest resumed in March, she would "make a formal decision as to how the inquest will proceed at that point".

TIGERS THROUGH TO GRAND FINAL SHEFFIELD are through to their first Grand Final in three years after a dramatic Super Heat success over Leicester.

steaming up the inside of Morris into lap three as the Tigers just about did enough to progress through.

The sides couldn’t be separated after a total of 30 races with the overall score locked at 90-90 - before the Tigers scored a 6-3 in the unique finale as the Owlerton outfit breathed a huge sigh of relief.

Team boss Simon Stead said: “That is an amazing achievement from where we were half way through this meeting - we were really on the back foot. “I’m proud of them; they had to dig deep, there were a couple of really big results in there that stemmed the flow a little bit, but it was just hard work. The track was hard work, Stewart (Dickson - Leicester team manager) had got his boys firing and we couldn’t really live with them. Our middle order and our reserves were struggling early on and I know they’re disappointed but what I would say is that they picked up some crucial points at Sheffield that put us in this position.

Despite travelling to the East Midlands with a 24-point advantage, the fired up hosts came out all guns blazing and hammered away at the aggregate scoreline. The Tigers were pegged back level with 10 races gone - but a timely first heat advantage of the night from guest No.1 Max Fricke and Anders Rowe saw them edge back in front overall heading into the interval.

RUNNERS SHOW TEAM SPIRIT

Chris Holder split the home duo of Sam Masters and Joe Thompson in Heat 12 before Fricke and Leon Flint won shared races for the Tigers to take it down to a last heat decider.

“Max was a fantastic guest once again and him and Picko stood up, was counted and got the job done in the end. All that matters is that we’re into that final and we now get to dust ourselves off and go again.”

That was again won by a fast starting Fricke, but with Josh Pickering unable to find a way through from the back, a Super Heat was setup.

Sheffield will host Roses rivals Belle Vue in the Grand Final first leg next Thursday (October 8, 7.30pm) with the second leg in Manchester on Monday, October 12 (7.30pm).

Leicester won the toss for gate positions and interestingly opted to switch Nick Morris to the inside gate with Ryan Douglas going off ate three - a surprise move which visibly gave the Tigers’ a boost pre-race.

ROWE MOTOR OIL PREMIERSHIP, PLAYOFF SEMI-FINAL, 2nd Leg

After another initial fast start from Fricke, Douglas then took the lead on bend one, lap two and with Morris sitting in third, the hosts looked set to complete the unthinkable comeback. But Fricke quickly responded off bend two to retake the lead before Pickering came

LEICESTER 57: Joe Thompson 14+1, Ryan Douglas 13+1, Nick Morris 11+4, Sam Masters 9+1, Drew Kemp 7+1, Paco Castagna 3+1, Dan Thompson R/R. SHEFFIELD 33: Max Fricke 13, Chris Holder 6, Josh Pickering 5, Leon Flint 5, Anders Rowe 2, Luke Killeen 2, Jye Etheridge 0. Aggregate scores tied 90-90. Sheffield win Super Heat 6-3.

HAPPY SATURDAY Saturday saw runners show grit and determination as they tackled the gruelling Rowbotham’s Round Rotherham 50-mile trail race.

selflessly gave up her chance to run as part of the relay team to act as dedicated crew for her fellow runners.

Starting and finishing at the Manvers Waterfront, runners and walkers lined up before dawn to take on a beautifully scenic anticlockwise loop that circumnavigates the Rotherham boundary, taking in local landmarks such as Keppel’s Column, Langold Lake Country Park, and Roche Abbey.

Completing the solo roster was Shaun Wright (V50). Returning from injury, Wright showed immense resilience by completing the brutal 50-mile route as a walk, clocking an impressive 14:18:30.

High Green’s own Valley Hill Runners (VHR) made a sizeable impact on the event, fielding an impressive roster that included two 8-member relay teams alongside five dedicated solo competitors who braved the full 50mile distance. Leading the individual charge for the club was Tom Brockwell (M45). As the first solo finisher for VHR, Brockwell crossed the line in a blistering time of 10 hours, 51 minutes, and 11 seconds. He was followed by Jonny Briggs (V50), who registered an excellent time of 11:33:57. Demonstrating the true essence of endurance running, debutante Rebecca Sanders (F V40) and second-claim member Chris Lobjoit (V50) ran the entire course side-by-side, crossing the line together in 13:46:53 and 13:46:57 respectively. Keeping their spirits high across the long hours, the pair adopted the catchy synth-pop classic “Popcorn” by Hot Butter as the unofficial, looping soundtrack to their 50-mile run. The pair were brilliantly supported throughout the day by clubmate Caroline White, who

“It was a gamble, so I’m happy to have succeeded,” Wright said of the achievement. The club extended its warmest wishes to Shaun as he continues his return to peak form. The incredible club spirit didn’t stop with the soloists. In the 8-stage team event, the VHR relay squads put in spectacular performances. Valley Hill B took top club honours on the day with a flying time of 8:35:22, while Valley Hill A displayed fantastic consistency to finish in 9:10:57. The logistical triumph of the relay squads was heavily aided by Wendy Duggan. In a display of dedication, Duggan not only ran a highly competitive leg as part of the relay effort but subsequently drove to every checkpoint on the course to cheer and support her teammates. Club members John Power and Caroline Brooke were also out on the course throughout the day, providing welcome support and encouragement to the team. With 100% of their solo runners and relay teams successfully conquering the perimeter loop, it marks a highly successful and memorable weekend in the history of Valley Hill Runners.

Saturday wouldn’t be Saturday without High Green Harriers heading out to volunteer somewhere this week. It was the usual stomping ground of Concord Parkrun. Everyone enjoys running and seeing friends on Saturday morning. It’s a great way to make

new friends its all inclusive from young to old, everyone enjoying a social Saturday. It’s a great way to start the weekend. Jayne and George always give the thumbs up to Concord.

NEW STEELS MANAGER APPOINTED AS CAPTAIN LEAVES FORMER LEEDS UNITED MIDFIELDER REPLACES JORDAN LEMON AS BEN TOWNSEND DEPARTS THE CLUB It’s been a busy week for Stocksbridge Park Steels starting with a 3-2 defeat away at Liversedge on Saturday. Then on Monday the club announced the departure of goalkeeper and captain Ben Townsend who made over 160 appearances for the club. In a statement released on the club’s social media, Townsend said: “I’ve always given everything I could for this club, on and off the pitch, and I can honestly say I’ve given my all. But now, my time has come to an end.” A day later, the Steels were back with more big news as they announced Jordan Lemon’s replacement. Jason Blunt, who began his playing career with a handful of Premier League games under Howard Wilkinson at Elland Road, has been brought to Bracken Moor to turnaround the club’s fortunes. club with such a proud history, is an opportunity I’m honoured to embrace. I’d like to thank the club for their trust. We know there is a big job ahead, and we’re ready to give it everything. My good friend Micky Norbury will join me as assistant manager. A great player with valuable experience at this level, he’ll bring a great deal to our team. Connor Blunt will also join us as a coach, bringing his knowledge from his playing background and his contribution at my previous clubs. Having good people around you—people you trust – is vital. The league table doesn’t lie. We know where we stand and the work required, but we’ll face that challenge together, with hard work, high standards and everyone pulling in the same direction. Our aim is to build a competitive team that works for one another, improves every day and represents this club with pride. To the supporters and the wider community, your backing will be vital. We want to build a team you can connect with, that gives everything for the badge and makes you proud. I’m looking forward to meeting you all and getting started. Thanks, Blunty.” The Steels host Matlock Town on Saturday 10 October.

That proved to be their final score of the afternoon, however, as Stocksbridge regained control. Birch marked his return to action in style, scoring almost immediately after coming on. George Leary was later shown a yellow card, but Stocksbridge’s defence held firm against another Dinnington rolling maul. Birch then added his second try of the afternoon after producing a neat sidestep, with Bowskill converting. Dinnington also saw a player sent to the sin bin after a high tackle brought down the rampaging Birch. The final whistle confirmed a 38-12 victory for Stocksbridge, who began their league campaign with an emphatic bonus-point win. Captain and inspirational leader Andy Beal was named Man of the Match after a dominant display. Beal said: “It was a great start to the season, where all our hard work and grind in training just seemed to click. “This is the standard we have set, and we will be looking to improve week on week.” Stocksbridge are back on the road next week when they travel to Abbeydale to face Sheffield’s third team, before the Fox Valley derby away at Wortley RUFC on October 17. The first competitive fixture at the newly renamed Grov Park Arena takes place on October 24, when Wath 3rds visit for a 3pm kickoff.
