Specially trained police deployed to Tramlines Festival Specially trained police officers are being deployed around Hillsborough Park as Sheffield prepares to welcome thousands of music fans to this year’s Tramlines Festival. South Yorkshire Police says officers from its Project Servator teams will be carrying out deployments around the festival site as preparations continue ahead of the event. Project Servator is a policing tactic designed to deter, detect and disrupt a range of criminal activity, including potential terrorist activity. Officers were most recently in the Hillsborough Park area on Sunday, July 19, and members of the public may see further deployments throughout the coming days. Police say the deployments will be highly visible, but not all of the resources being used will be immediately obvious to the public. As well as uniformed officers, specially trained plain-clothes officers and operators
monitoring live CCTV cameras may also be involved in the operation. Project Servator officers are specially trained to spot tell-tale signs that someone may be planning or preparing to commit a criminal act. South Yorkshire Police said officers could be seen at any time of day around the festival area, adding that members of the public “won’t necessarily see everything at our disposal”. Police are urging festivalgoers and members of the public to remain alert and report anything suspicious to officers. The force also stressed that while Project Servator officers “could be anywhere”, they cannot be everywhere. Tramlines Festival takes place Friday 24 to Sunday 26 July at Hillsborough Park, with thousands of people expected to attend the popular Sheffield music festival.

Train services cut Rail passengers travelling between Sheffield and London have been warned to expect disruption after East Midlands Railway introduced a temporary reduction in services.
The changes came into effect immediately and could remain in place for weeks, with fewer trains running and some services operating with reduced numbers of carriages. South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard has criticised the short notice given to passengers and said the lack of information had left people having to rearrange their travel plans at short notice. He has also called for clearer communication from East Midlands Railway, saying the scale and duration of the changes remain unclear. In a statement, Mayor Coppard said: “While we still have very little detail, from what they’ve sent through it looks like we could be losing up to half our services, and they will also be reducing the number of carriages. “My officers met with the EMR stakeholder team last week and nothing was mentioned.
“Apparently this is a ‘temporary measure’ but we have no idea for how long.” He added: “We’re now facing a summer of chaos on the railways. To say this isn’t acceptable couldn’t be more of an understatement and I’ll be taking it up with the Managing Director of the company as a matter of urgency.” East Midlands Railway says the changes are necessary because of ongoing reliability and maintenance issues affecting both its new and existing train fleets. The operator has described the revised timetable as temporary and says it will remain under regular review while work continues to improve the reliability of its services. However, passengers have been urged to check their journey before setting off. The changes could affect commuters, holiday-goers and other passengers travelling between Sheffield and the capital during the busy summer travel period. Passengers are advised to check the latest journey information before travelling and allow extra time for their journeys.
