High Green Jack and Paul’s Law FOUR ARRESTED
Local MP and Mum Celebrate as 'Jack and DRUG CRACKDOWN Paul’s Law' Passes First Parliamentary Hurdle Police have arrested four people in High Green after carrying out warrants and proactive vehicle stops as part of a crackdown on drug dealing in Sheffield. Officers from the Ecclesfield and Shiregreen Neighbourhood Policing Team executed two warrants in the High Green area during County Lines Intensification Week targeting suspected drug supply activity.
MPs have voted through the first stage of "Jack and Paul’s Law," a monumental step in the 11year campaign by local campaigner Claire Throssell MBE to repeal the presumption of parental contact. The Courts and Tribunals Bill, which includes Clause 17, passed its Second Reading in Parliament.
The operation resulted in four people being arrested on suspicion of possession of controlled drugs with intent to supply. One woman has since been charged with possession offences, while three others have been bailed as enquiries continue.
The campaign follows the tragic deaths of Claire’s sons, Jack and Paul Sykes, who died in a house fire during a court-ordered unsupervised contact visit with their known domestically abusive father. The law aims to repeal a legal principle in the Children Act 1989 that currently assumes any parent, even a known domestic abuser, should be given contact with their children.
In a seperate incident, officers conducted a warrant at a property on Wortley Road in High Green, following intelligence the property was being used to cultivate cannabis. Police reported that no cannabis plants or drugs were found inside the property, but there were signs that the electrics had been tampered with.
Claire Throssell, who watched the vote from the public gallery, said the bill offers a life-saving opportunity. She added that the legislation will ensure children suffering abuse “will be protected and allowed to live their lives free from harm and oppression and given better futures”. Continued on page 2
