A list of the top ten Inspirational Northerners of 2025, out this week, names domestic abuse campaigner, Claire Throssell MBE, and her Penistone and Stocksbridge MP, Marie Tidball in 2025 Top Ten List of Inspirational Northerners. Featured in The Sun on Sunday, The Northern Agenda also named Margaret Aspinall and the Hillsborough Families, as well as people from the worlds of sport, including Lioness Lucy Bronze, and Musician, Sam Fender, in their list.
In October, the Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, met Claire and Marie in Downing Street and told Claire that he would take forward that promise and repeal the presumption of contact, to protect future generations of children.
Claire Throssell MBE topped the list, for the work she has done on domestic abuse and violence for more than a decade, following the tragic deaths of her sons Jack and Paul Sykes killed by their father - a known domestic abuser - in a house fire - while on a court permitted contact visit.
In highlighting Marie’s work alongside her constituent, Claire, The Northern Agenda described Dr Tidball MP as one of ‘Labour’s rising stars’ and celebrated her work on the Assisted Dying Bill and intervention on Welfare Reform.
Claire made a promise to her boys eleven years ago, that she would change the law to protect children like them. When Marie Tidball MP first met Claire, she in turn said that if she was elected she said would help her fulfil that promise to her beautiful boys.
After hearing the news, Dr Marie Tidball said: “As a proud Yorkshirewoman, it means a great deal to be named alongside my phenomenal constituent, Claire Throssell MBE, in the 2025 top ten list of inspirational Northerners. It has been such a privilege to campaign with her for ‘Jack and Paul’s Law’ - to repeal the presumption of contact. Continued on page 11
