An 8-year-old girl from Chapeltown, Sheffield, has spent the last two years growing her hair to donate 10 inches to The Little Princess Trust, a charity that provides real hair wigs to children and young people who lose their hair due to cancer treatment or other medical conditions. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the charity, making her donation especially significant. Emily Topham was inspired to start her hair-growing journey after admiring a friend’s short haircut at school and wanting a similar style herself. Her parents
then told her about The Little Princess Trust and how her hair could help another child, and Emily immediately embraced the idea, showing her naturally kind and caring nature. So far, Emily has helped raise over £700, covering the cost of one real-hair wig. Any additional donations will go directly towards funding another wig for a child in need. The “big chop” is scheduled for 30 December and will take place at her Auntie Joanne’s house, where Emily usually gets her haircuts. It promises to be a special moment shared with close family, and Emily is said to be excited to see her new look. She has even expressed a desire to grow her hair again in the future so she can donate once more.

TRACTOR RALLY DAZZLES Community rally to help Sheffield charities and begin the ‘festive’ togetherness
This years Bradfield Tractor Rally was enjoyed by many families, young and old, across North Sheffield, with a dazzling display of Christmas spirit as local farmers drove from village to village, brightening up a dark, damp Sunday winter evening. The festive event also raised, so far, an incredible £5,500 to support The Sheffield 1000 and The Farming Community Network (FCN), two charities making a real difference to local communities and rural families. The Sheffield 1000 charity helps grassroots organisations that often lack big marketing teams, ensuring that even relatively small donations — such as £1,000 — can have a huge impact. “At The Sheffield 1000, we’re proud to support grassroots organisations making a real difference in our local communities,” organisers said. The Farming Community Network provides vital support to farmers, their families, and

rural communities during difficult times and periods of change. Running a confidential national helpline and e-helpline every day from 7am to 11pm, volunteers provide free support to anyone who seeks help. More than 10,000 people benefit each year, a service organisers say is especially needed given the current challenges facing the farming community. Organisers of the rally expressed their gratitude to all who attended and supported the appeal. “A huge thank you to everyone who came along and helped us reach our fundraising target of £5,500,” they said. “Your support will make a real difference to both local community groups and families in the farming community who need our help the most.” The money raised will go directly to supporting local initiatives and providing essential assistance to those in rural areas, highlighting the strong sense of community and festive spirit across North Sheffield.

One thousand local children out of poverty Marie Tidball MP, Labour MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge has welcomed the Government’s announcement of their historic Child Poverty Strategy, which will attempt to lift 550,000 children out of poverty across the country. This Strategy will attempt to deliver the largest reduction in child poverty, in one Parliament, since records began, claim the Labour government. The Strategy includes landmark measures including scrapping the two-child cap, which will alone lift 1,140 children out of poverty across the Penistone and Stocksbridge constituency. This cap was introduced by the previous Conservative Government and has pushed an estimated 300,000 children into poverty. The strategy aims to tackle the scourge of child poverty at its roots by getting all public services to row together to tackle the structural causes of child poverty. This includes cutting the cost of essentials, like reducing the cost of baby formula, with free breakfast clubs like the one at High Green Primary School, 30 hours government funded childcare,
and expanding free school meal eligibility. The latter means 2,700 more children across our communities will receive free school meals. From next year, the rules will change to make it easier for new parents who receive Universal Credit to get back to work by extending eligibility for upfront childcare costs to those returning from parental leave. This will prevent new parents from facing a debt trap, meaning more parents can get back to work and get on in work faster. The Strategy also strengthens local services, with investment in family hubs and nursery places, like in Royd Nursery School. As part of this, Marie Tidball MP is campaigning to bring a Family Hub to Chapeltown to serve families across Chapeltown, Burncross and Ecclesfield. Following the announcement, during a debate on the Strategy in Parliament, Marie Tidball MP raised that “over 23% of children in my Penistone and Stocksbridge constituency are living in poverty. This is unacceptable. We know that children growing up in poverty are less likely
to be in work and will earn 25% less than their peers by the time they are 30.” She followed by highlighting that “scrapping the two-child benefit cap will benefit 1,140 children in my constituency... this is an investment in their future. Marie asked the Secretary of State for Education, Bridget Phillipson, “given that it is the moral mission of this Government to break the devastating cycle of child poverty, will the Secretary of State work with me to look at opportunities for a family hub in Chapeltown in my constituency that will also serve Burncross and Ecclesfield?” Following the announcement, Marie Tidball MP said: “Our children deserve the best start in life, nothing less will do. “It’s one of the proudest moments so far as your MP is to say that these changes will lift 1,140 children out of poverty across Penistone and Stocksbridge. “

New wing opened at Hospital Over £7 million has been invested in two new state-of-the-art machines at Weston Park Cancer Centre to give more people radiotherapy. The development includes a purpose-built extension wing at Weston Park Cancer Centre to house two new Halcyon radiotherapy machines which enable faster, more precise radiotherapy treatments. The new wing also provides modern welcoming waiting area for patients and staff facilities. The new machines were officially opened by Dr Trish Fisher, retired Clinical Oncologist
and former Clinical Director for Specialised Cancer Services at the Trust. Dr Trish Fisher said: "I was thrilled to be invited to officially open this important new wing, which houses two more state-of-theart radiotherapy machines, which halve the treatment time for patients compared to previous machines that we used. This £7m development represents another step forward in Sheffield Teaching Hospital's commitment to providing the highest standard of cancer care to patients from across South Yorkshire and beyond using the latest technology."

FREE ICE-SKATING RINK Sheffield City Centre will be transformed this January with a vibrant Fan Zone – complete with a free to use artificial ice rink – set up in celebration of the ISU Figure Skating European Championships Sheffield 2026. From 13–18 January, the city will proudly host Europe’s premier skating event at the Sheffield Utilita Arena, marking the UK’s first time in over a decade to welcome this prestigious competition. Sheffield is ready to roll out the red carpet for world-class athletes and fans from across the continent. While the Championships unfold at the Arena, the excitement will also be felt in the city centre. Residents, visitors, and skating enthusiasts will be able to soak up the atmosphere at The European Championships Fan Zone. Located at the Sheffield Peace Gardens, the Fan Zone will feature a freeto-use ice-skating rink, alongside a big screen broadcasting live competition coverage, highlights, and sponsor content. Life Coach Runs Percy HOSEPIPE Pud in Memory of BAN FINALLY Lifelong Friend LIFTED After almost five months of restrictions, Yorkshire Water has lifted the hosepipe ban that was brought in over the summer following one of the driest springs on record.
The ban, introduced back in July, came after the region experienced its driest spring in 132 years alongside a record-breaking warm summer, leaving water stocks under severe pressure. Now, with reservoir levels restored and groundwater supplies recovering, the company says it is safe to lift the ban earlier than expected. Reservoir levels across Yorkshire now sit at 91.6%, while the Hull aquifer has risen to 77% — both above average for this time of year. A spokesperson for Yorkshire Water said they were “incredibly grateful” to customers for sticking to the rules and helping protect supplies at a critical time. They added:
“Your efforts to follow the restrictions and use less water really did work. When restrictions were introduced and the weather was warm, customer usage dropped by 10%, taking pressure off our reservoirs.”
The company said that continued water-saving habits, combined with increased rainfall and the use of drought orders and permits, helped speed up the recovery of water sources across the region. In total, Yorkshire Water estimates that the hosepipe restrictions saved around 3.1 billion litres of water — the equivalent of 69 days of York’s average water usage. Residents across the Look Local area can now return to using hosepipes, sprinklers and pressure washers as normal, though Yorkshire Water is still encouraging households to keep up good water-saving habits heading into winter.
An Oughtibridge life coach has raised more than £500 in memory of her close friend, after taking on this year’s Percy Pud 10k at short notice to support St Luke’s Hospice.
Debbie Cundy, a well-known fundraiser who has previously supported a range of local causes, said she wanted the spotlight firmly on her late friend David Grocutt, a man she described as “a lifelong friend of over 30 years” and someone who “did so much for the good of others in both his professional and personal life”. David, who lived locally, passed away far too early, and Debbie said she felt compelled to do something positive in his honour. Despite only securing a last-minute donated place for St Luke’s, she joined thousands of runners at the popular Loxley Valley event on Sunday, helping boost the hospice’s overall fundraising

The Wharncliffe Side Christmas Tree Festival made a triumphant return this past weekend, drawing crowds and rekindling a cherished local tradition. Organised by the Wharncliffe Side Development Association, the festival ran from Friday 12th December through Sunday 14th December, with visitors enjoying refreshments and admiring dozens of trees decorated by local schools, clubs, and community groups. Association Chair, Luke Denton, said: “We wanted to bring back something that had always been a highlight of the village calendar. Seeing the hall filled with light, laughter, and creativity again was truly special.” Attendance across the three days was strong, with families, friends, and neighbours turning out to support the event. The Association extended thanks to everyone who contributed; from those who decorated trees, to volunteers who served refreshments, and to the many visitors who came to share in the celebration. The Development Association, who have had many successes over 2025 including the popular Brightholmlee Community Café, the newly formed Wharncliffe Dragons Youth Club and the Brightholmlee Community fridge, say the success of this year’s revival has laid the groundwork for the festival to become a regular fixture once more, shining brightly in Wharncliffe Side’s Christmas calendar.

Our local Christmas folk plays have died out, except for one in one place, that doesn’t merely survive; it thrives: the Grenoside Sword Dance. A continuous tradition (as near as), it’s not the 18th century invention assumed. A diary discovered 200 years ago that had belonged to an even then long deceased villager, contains this entry, showing 17th century spelling, written in the past tense:

Local Opinion Appeal for a Lady An elderly gentleman is hoping to reconnect with a lady he had a ten-minute conversation with outside Allied Pharmacy on Johnson Street on the afternoon of June 11th. At the time, the gentleman was feeling a little tired and didn’t want to impose on the lady. However, the memory of their chat has stayed with him strongly, even after nearly six months. He is appealing to anyone who might remember this encounter to make contact. The man seems to remember the lady was the same age of 76, and may even have been in the same class at school. Dogs Dear Editor As the festive season approaches and another year comes to a close, I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has supported Dogs Trust over the last 12 months. With your support, we have made a vital difference to the thousands of dogs who needed our help. The pressure on the animal welfare sector continues, and this year, we received more than 40,000 enquiries from owners who felt they had no choice but to give up their dog. As a dog owner myself, I know how devastating a decision like that can be, which is why we do all we can to keep dogs and their owners together, including providing support to thousands of dog owners through our Behaviour Support Line. Despite the challenges, we have also seen incredible kindness from our nation of dog lovers. With your help, almost 10,000 dogs of all ages and breeds found new homes, including 440 puppies born in our care. Throughout their stay, our dedicated staff ensured every dog was safe, comfortable and loved. We are very grateful to our incredible volunteers, whose time and dedication make all the difference, whether through fostering, dog walking, administrative support, or inspiring fundraising efforts. High Street Christmas Event I would like to thank everyone who took part in and helped organise the Stocksbridge High Street Christmas Event on Wednesday 10th December at Manchester Road Shopping Precinct. I would especially like to thank the children and staff from Stocksbridge Infant School. The children sang the carols beautifully, they were well guided by their teacher. A big thank you to the local shops who donated food and refreshments. Selection boxes, cookies and treats were handed out to all of the children who took part in the treasure hunt to find out what the cheeky elves had been up to. I would also like to thank Sheffield City Council and Stocksbridge Town Council staff for setting the music and the gazebo up. The Christmas songs were wonderful and so were the High Street decorations. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone in Stocksbridge & Upper Don. This issue is killing your party’s credibility just as Thatchers government was on the wrong side of history with Nelson Mandela and Apartheid in the 80s The evidence is mounting to show that this Labour government is giving licence to arms companies like Elbit systems to manufacture Arms and systems which are still killing civilians in Palestine. Eg. Drones which mimic the cries of women and children and which entice people out of hiding after bombing where they are killed by snipers. You cannot remain silent and gag people from speaking out. You must not ignore the plight of those committed to end these atrocities through thier hunger strikes during thier imprisonment without trial. Lift the gagging order, visit and listen to the hunger strikers. Stop the profiteering from genocide!! Listen to the people you represent. TOWN HALL TREE PLAQUE On 4/12/2025, the BBC reported that Sheffield City Council (SCC) has finally commissioned an artist to design a bronze plaque to recognise the efforts, sacrifices and achievements of all people that supported the campaign to secure better outcomes for all tree populations in Sheffield (the urban forest), and to serve as a reminder that such wrongs as committed by SCC must never happen again. The SCC decision to have a plaque, to be displayed on the wall at the main entrance to the Town Hall, was made during an ‘extraordinary’ SCC meeting of council, on 10/5/2023, convened to consider the implications of the Street Tree Inquiry Report (published on 6/3/2023) for Sheffield, SCC, and the councillors responsible for the wrongs. The text originally proposed for the plaque (see issues 1398 & 1273 of look local, online) had been penned by Ms Shelley Cockayne, with input from Ms Ruth Hubbard (both from It’s Our City & Sheffield Tree Action Groups [STAG]), in April 2023 following discussion in a little-known WhatsApp group (Tree Democrats). The text was offered as a suggestion, for inspiration when formulating the actual wording for the plaque. The hope was that it would “be a reminder for every public servant that they serve the public every day they turn up for ‘work’.” The text was shared, for feedback, on the STAG Members Discussion Facebook group, on 26/4/2023, but went unnoticed by many of the key players in the tree campaign, myself included. At the aforementioned ‘extraordinary’ meeting, SCC approved the text for use. In December 2023, SCC secretly set about designing the plaque and presented STAG with several seemingly computer-generated images for consideration, plus a range of different wording options, all of which lacked appeal and failed to communicate that there had been a city-wide campaign, what it was about, and what campaigners achieved. Wishing to avoid conflict, and unsure of who to consult, SCC issued a public appeal, on 10/5/2024: “We’re looking for people to join a small, time-limited group to help develop and lead a process to agree: the wording of a design brief for the plaque, how to commission the plaque design…; the approach for a wider public consultation process. …The group will have up to 12 members, including a senior Sheffield City Council officer representative. It will initially be supported by an independent, experienced facilitator. …we’re looking for people who: …are able to volunteer approximately eight hours of time over the next three months… … Email us …in no more than 250 words, explaining why you want to be part of the group and what skills and experience you can bring.” On 4/6/2024, along with fourteen others, plus Mr Richard

Call 0114 283 1100 Eyre - SCC Director of Street Scene & Regulations Services (Neighbourhoods Directorate) - and one of his Officers (Mr Daniel Whittaker), I joined the Trees Plaque Working Group (TPWG). To date there have been ten meetings. To facilitate the inaugural twohour meeting, and to provide a fourteen-page summary of the session, SCC commissioned a consultant, at a cost of £2,940. The consultant insisted that we appointed two chairmen from amongst our number and that they had to be people that had not been involved with the tree campaign (although both may have been involved with SCC). There were only two in the group that fulfilled those criteria; neither had any knowledge or understanding of the tree campaign. At the meeting, Mr Eyre informed the group that we could have a plaque or something else, instead. He said that, within reason, it could be whatever form, size, shape and material we desire, and that we could choose the wording and location. Immediately, what had been a relatively simple task became ridiculously complex. Progress has been greatly hindered by the acts and omissions of the SCC men and the two chairmen: taking bad decisions and advancing the process between meetings, without first consulting the group and without seeking its authorisation. Those wrongs have resulted in much confusion, conflict and many months of delays, eroding faith, trust and credibility. The approved wording had neglected to mention trees and did not provide any date/s. After much debate with the group, in November 2024, I suggested the following text (65 ‘words’): “In recognition of the sacrifices, hardships and generosity of all citizens who campaigned for a strategic approach to stewardship of our urban forest, its street trees, and the range of valuable benefits that trees afford to the environment and communities, and to serve as a reminder to all elected members that such failure of leadership as occurred between 2007 and 2019 will never happen again.” My offering was one of sixteen that were considered. The wording for the plaque (37 words) was finally decided by the majority of the group in January 2025. It is an amended version of wording offered by Dr Sheldon Hall (a film studies academic and STAG supporter). He offered five wording options (four with between 18 & 25 words and a fifth that had 44 words), inspired by four wording options that had been offered by individual TPWG participants and provided to Dr Hall. The four options from the TPWG – my own included - had survived popularity polls completed by TPWG participants & STAG supporters (November 2024). The polls had required recipients to rank each option on a scale of 1 to 5 and comment on each option. However, the poll that was presented to supporters neglected to explain the ranking system, thereby invalidating ranking results. The TPWG was at a loss as to how to progress, so invited Dr Hall to suggest a wording option of his own, based on his analysis of the four

options and polling comments. The wording on the plaque will be: “In recognition of the courageous campaigners who saved thousands of street trees from wrongful felling by Sheffield City Council, and as a reminder to all that such failures of leadership must never happen again. 2012 - 2018” Many TPWG participants felt that if the text was any longer nobody would read it. In light of feedback from the TPWG & STAG supporters, in January 2025, I prepared five shorter versions of my offering for the group to consider, alongside any contribution from Dr Hall, ranging in length from 47 words to 27 words, but the two chairmen of the group would not permit the group the opportunity to receive or consider those. TPWG participants felt that the plaque should not recognise or acknowledge the fact that tree campaigners campaigned for, and secured, better outcomes for all Sheffield’s trees. They felt that people in Sheffield wouldn’t understand what ‘urban forest’ meant. They also felt that the date range should not cover the whole period of SCC wrongs but just the conflict years of the £2.2 billion ‘Streets Ahead’ highway maintenance contract: up to when the Forestry Commission intervened and in effectively forced an end to the scheduled unlawful felling of circa 11,000 more street trees. The plaque text will be framed by a design provided by Lydia Monks (Children’s Illustrator) and each letter of the text will be as drawn by her. The TPWG only met once with Ms Monks. It was an informal one-hour meeting to discuss design. She presented a range of font options for the text and agreed to amend her initial design, to incorporate creatures that signify a range of techniques that protestors used during non-violent direct action. I had asked if she could include a bat hills and hills - to communicate that the campaign was city-wide and not just about street trees. She said she could but then, without reason, didn’t. Beyond that, Ms Monks insisted that TPWG participants must not contact her. Participants have not had any further communication with her. Her £500 fee is being donated to the charity Kids Plant Trees. SCC are eager to complete this task before the 2026 local elections. This wasn’t revealed to the TPWG until November 2025. Unveiling of the plaque is expected to be on or around 6/3/2026 (third anniversary of the Lowcock report: see Look Local issue 1381, online). David Long (SORT representative at the TPWG) S35

Festive fixtures bring success Penistone Footpath Runners were in fine form at the Travellers 6, the traditional pre-Christmas six-mile road race organised by Denby Dale Athletics Club. Tom Fryers led the club home with a strong seventh place overall in 3816, followed by a series of age-category victories that underlined the depth of the Penistone squad. Damian Kilpin claimed first place in the men’s over45 category with 40-49, while Ian Neville topped the men’s over60 standings in 42-17 and Andrew Shelbourne added a further podium place with second in the same category. Suzanne McGill continued her consistent winter form by winning the ladies over45 category in 44-04, and Shaun Swallow added a further category victory with success in the men’s over55 category in 44-17. Further category wins came from Stuart Woodhead in the men’s over70 and Raymond Brown in the men’s over85, as Penistone collected a notable haul of age-group honours across the field. There was further road race action at the Stockport 10, where Pete Beever represented Penistone Footpath Runners at the popular Cheshire event, completing the undulating ten-mile course in 1-26-53. Nichola McNally added to the weekend’s success with an excellent run at the Langdale Christmas Pudding 10K in the Lake District. Racing on an undulating but highly scenic course, McNally finished second lady overall and claimed first place in the women’s over50 category, recording a time of 44-00. Harriet Drouin took on the demanding Moors the Merrier event, covering 21 miles of rugged terrain around Hebden Bridge with approximately 4,000 feet of climb. Drouin completed the challenging winter route in 5-21. A small Penistone Footpath Runners contingent also took part in
the Sherwood Pines Festive Duathlons, staged in the Nottinghamshire woodland near Mansfield and organised by Wild Deer Events. The off-road courses combined trail running with mountain-bikefriendly cycle routes through the forest. In the Standard Duathlon, Philip Hinchliffe led the club home with a strong fourth-place overall finish in 2-18-29, followed by Dan Rushforth in 15th place in 2-28-00. Robin Clough completed the course in 2-28-57 for 16th overall and topped his age category, while Simon Lovidge rounded out the Penistone representation with a solid run to finish in 2-42-33. Chloe Hinchliffe was also in action at the event, competing in the shorter Sprint Duathlon and finishing in 1-21-24. At the weekend’s parkruns, 71 Penistone Footpath Runners seniors were in action across 25 venues. At Penistone, Suzanne McGill led the women home with first female place in 22-11, while Tom Fryers and Hannah Shaw both secured second gender places. There were further podium finishes elsewhere, with Gemma Nutton second female at Pontefract and Rob Lees second overall at Armley. Third places came from Alan Nutton at Pontefract and Sean Pitt at Rother Valley, where Pitt also recorded a personal best. Seuranie Johnstone marked a milestone at Hillsborough, completing her 50th parkrun. Strong age-category performances were a feature throughout the weekend, including wins for Richard Heppenstall at Hove Promenade, Julia Johnson at Huddersfield, Oliver France at Riverside and Danny Batty at Barnsley. The top five age-graded performances of the weekend came from Julia Johnson (88.73%), Richard Heppenstall (86.19%), Dawn Godley (81.09%), Ian Neville (77.52%) and Alan Nutton (76.10%).

Ladies blazing a trail The ladies of Stocksbridge Running Club were out in force over the weekend, competing in the final trail race of the year organised by the team behind the popular Steel City Trail 10 series. Sunday’s event marked the culmination of a year-long programme of 10km trail challenges, staged to raise funds for local conservation groups. The concluding race was set against the striking backdrop of Redmires, offering both scenic views and a demanding test of endurance. Starting at Wyming Brook, runners climbed onto the moors overlooking the Peak District before looping around the Redmires reservoirs. The course proved challenging and rewarding in equal measure, with competitors tackling mud, rocky paths, boggy sections and classic trail terrain throughout.

Stocksbridge RC’s women rose admirably to the occasion. A special mention goes to Rachel Howard, who secured an outstanding third place overall in the female standings across the entire series, a result that reflects her excellent pace and consistency throughout the year. Amy Hutchinson also delivered a strong performance, having competed in the majority of the Steel City Trail events and representing the club with distinction on each occasion. Stocksbridge Running Club continues to meet on Monday evenings and welcomes runners of all abilities and paces who are interested in road, trail or social running within a supportive club environment.
BUSY WEEK OF FESTIVE RUNNING It was a busy few days for VHR runners in the run-up to Christmas. On Tuesday, Kim Adcock and Sarah Turton headed to Endcliffe Park for a charity run in aid of Sheffield Children’s Hospital. Festive lights lit up the three-mile route. Sarah described the evening as “so festive”, adding that the hot chocolate at the finish made it particularly enjoyable. At Concord parkrun on Saturday, Margaret Steer marked a major milestone by complet-
ing her 100th parkrun. Rebecca Sanders also enjoyed a strong morning. She jokingly credited some late-night dancing at the VHR Christmas do for the extra speed.
Pickard and Steve Sansom also wrapped up a series, finishing the Kimberworth Striders’ programme with the Santa Dash. Wendy described it as a great run.
VHR colours were on display at parkruns far and wide, with Kim Drake and Emma Raine travelling to Vicar Water, while Jenni and Gordon Fiander crossed the border into Wales.Sunday saw Gordon Fiander complete the full Steel City Trail 10 series. Wendy Richardson, Alan
Judith Kippax, Tina Pass and Louise Harrop took part in the festive Sherwood 10k. Sherwood also hosted a junior event, with Richard Bowles watching on as George, his and Louise’s son, completed his first one-mile run. George ran the full distance.

A stunning strike from Alex O'Connor gave Stocksbridge Park Steels a worthy point against Gainsborough Trinity. The first half wasn't one to entertain the hundreds in attendance at the Kal Group Stadium. Stocksbridge had plenty of possession, but it was Gainsborough that were carving out the chances. Ben Townsend was in great form though, making a series of great saves. He first had to react quick to an improvised effort from Johnny Margetts, before Sisa Tuntulwana became his foe. He was able to go one-on-one on two occasions, but Townsend was able to foil him with reflex saves on both occasions. Gainsborough would up the intensity in the second half and they were able to create more chances. The pressure
eventually paid off for Gainsborough as they found their goal.

Stocksbridge would rally though and get back into the game. After a few close calls like a Jack Tinker shot being saved by former Steel David Robson and O'Connor's free kick also being well saved, the goal would come. Oliwier Grzelak was denied a chance to move into the box, so he laid the ball off for O'Connor. The Australian midfielder hit it first time and it couldn't have been met better than it was as the ball zoomed into the bottom corner, leaving Robson helpless..

Globe Holidays sponsored Stocksbridge Rugby travelled east to Livingstone Road on Saturday 13th December for the final fixture of 2025, taking on Hessle RUFC in Counties 4 Yorkshire South, with the lads making the journey together on a pre-Christmas coach trip.

Pomona produced an impressive performance to secure a convincing 5–1 victory away at Dronfield and progress into the quarter-finals of the Topham Cup, rounding off the pre-Christmas period in emphatic fashion.
Pomona made a bright start and took the lead after seven minutes. A well-worked move between the forward partnership of Simon Bonnett and Jason Allsebrook saw Allsebrook cleverly flick the ball into Bonnett’s path, allowing the striker to finish calmly leftfooted across the goalkeeper into the far bottom corner. Although Pomona continued to dominate possession, they were occasionally guilty of forcing the play and conceding possession unnecessarily. Dronfield, however, struggled to break down Pomona’s wellorganised defence. It was one of the visiting centre-backs who doubled the lead shortly before half-time, as Michael Heppenstall met Simon Hawley’s corner with a powerful
diving header that left the home goalkeeper with no chance. Pomona returned after the break with greater intensity and sharper passing, increasing the tempo and causing Dronfield persistent problems down both flanks. The pressure told just five minutes into the second half when Allsebrook once again provided the assist, slipping Bonnett through to finish with his right foot across the keeper and in off the post to make it 3–0. Pomonas fourth followed ten minutes later, with James Illingworth latching onto a wellweighted pass from Simon Yeadon before finishing clinically. Bonnett completed his hattrick — and a deserved manof-the-match performance — finishing one-on-one with the goalkeeper after collecting yet another assist from Allsebrook.
Selection saw a welcome boost to the backline with the return of Jake “Bevs” Bevan, partnering Harrison “The Storm” Norman in the centres, while Calum Green and Jack Spencer took up residence on the wings and Tim “Turbo” Burton marshalled things from full back to give Bridge a strong looking back three. The bench had a youthful look with plenty of promise, including half-back Jono Burton, Jack James, Cole Stayley, returning forward Finn Dodsworth, Elliot Shaw, Mason Goldsworth and Aaron Kaye, showing the depth coming through the club.
Stocksbridge started brightly and were rewarded early when Scott Bowskill slotted a penalty after just three minutes following sustained forward pressure deep in the Hessle half. Moments later Bowkskill read the play superbly to intercept a pass but just couldn’t quite go the distance as scrambling Hessle defence hauled him down short. Continued pressure told soon after, with Bridge earning a 5-metre scrum. A controlled shove saw the pack rumble over the line for a textbook No.8 try from George Watts, sponsored by DR Binns Butchery, capping an excellent opening spell. The conversion drifted wide, but Bridge was deservedly ahead.
However, Hessle clawed their way back into the contest as Stocksbridge went a little quiet. The hosts crossed for their first score, missing the conversion to leave it 5–8, before Bridge switched off again just before the break, allowing Hessle in for another try. Another missed conversion meant the half-time score stood at 10–8 to Hessle, despite Stocksbridge’s strong opening 20 minutes. The second half became a real armwrestle, with both sides struggling to build momentum and defences largely on top. Stocksbridge battled hard and showed plenty of grit, but it was Hessle who eventually found the breakthrough, sneaking in at the corner and adding the conversion to stretch the lead to two scores with time ticking away. Bridge wasn’t done yet and threw everything into one final attack, making a couple of line breaks, only for Aaron Kaye to be held up agonisingly over the line. As Stocksbridge chased the game from deep, Hessle won a late penalty for holding on, which was calmly slotted to seal the result and put the final nail in the coffin.
It was a disappointing end to the year on the road for Stocksbridge, who showed just how dangerous they can be in that opening quarter but couldn’t quite maintain it for the full 80. The desire and effort were there in spells, but Hessle simply wanted it more on the day. There’s plenty to work on over the festive break, and the new year offers a chance to turn the corner. Burton, whose excellent work under the high ball, calm decision-making and dangerous returns kept Bridge in the fight throughout.
