BUS OPERATOR ADMITS NEW SERVICE HAS ‘NOT BEEN GOOD ENOUGH’ Local bus operator, Stagecoach has announced it is to make changes to a new bus service that has been in operation for only 2 weeks.
We also made clear the impact that this lack of reliability is having on people in the Upper Don Valley trying to get to work, school, and hospital appointments.
The Stocksbridge ‘Flyer’ has received much scrutiny and criticism from local residents after the Supertram Link bus was scrapped earlier in the month and replaced by the new service.
Stagecoach accepts that the first two weeks of the new service have not been good enough and they are disappointed in the poor performance of the service.
Local MP Miriam Cates last week, met with the operator. Miriam Cates posted “This afternoon, Councillor Lewis Chinchen and I met with Stagecoach to discuss concerns about the new 57/57a bus service between Stocksbridge and Sheffield. We shared detailed feedback from passengers about buses that have been late, driven past without stopping or not turned up at all.
However, they have been working to understand the reasons behind the issues and will be revising the timetable from 30th October to improve reliability, especially at peak times. There will also be additional resources committed to the route from 30th November to help with the problems caused by traffic congestion at peak times.” A regular user of the bus service told Look Local
Unsliven Bridge fell off the ‘tracker’ and did not run, and when the next bus came there was a crowd waiting for it in the centre of Stocksbridge, several of whom said they’d been waiting for over an hour for any bus. All were providing horror stories about Stagecoach, including that it is now impossible to get on a Stocksbridge bus at Hillsborough during rush hour times, as they are all full.” Stagecoach is also currently updating the data for their mobile phone app bus tracker, again to improve reliability. Stagecoach managers are keen to hear directly of incidences where buses with empty seats have failed to stop for waiting passengers.
