Stocksbridge to Sheffield

Railway line

to re-open

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak reiterated the government’s commitment to re-opening the Don Valley Line as part of a raft of rail promises to appease northern voters for the loss of HS2.

The proposal was shortlisted for ‘Restoring Your Railways’ funding two years ago, and Sunak appeared to suggest last week that it would be in a prime position to be granted approval. MP Miriam Cates told Look Local “I’m delighted that the Prime Minister has backed my plan to reopen the Don Valley Line between Stocksbridge and Sheffield, and committed to funding it as part of the new “Network North” project to improve transport connectivity.” The MP for Stocksbridge and Penistone received an official letter from Rail Minister Huw Merriam to confirm the ‘go-ahead’ “ …the Don Valley line … has been assessed…

I’ve been working hard with local partners to make the case for the reopening of this line since I was elected. It has huge support amongst local people and I’m thrilled that it will now be delivered. Network North will also see full electrification and more capacity on the lines connecting Sheffield to Leeds, Manchester, Doncaster and Hull. I particularly welcome the Prime Minister’s announcement of extra money for local bus services in South Yorkshire and an extension of the Government’s funding for the £2 bus fare cap.
