MAN WITH THE PRAM TO BE HONOURED BY THE CITY
Written By James Fletcher
Thursday the 17th of August, John Burkhill, 84 - also known as ‘The man with the pram’ will be celebrated by the city for his outstanding charity work. Mr Burkhill could and still be seen pushing his iconic pram around the city of Sheffield raising money for Macmillan Cancer Research after the tragic loss of his wife and child in 1991 and 92 to cancer and has been fundraising ever since. Recently John has raised over £1 million for Macmillan over a 30-year period and could be seen walking the streets come rain or shine. He has touched so many lives and has become an icon for the city with many residents calling for a statue to be erected of the great man. And has had a documentary made about his life called ‘One in a Million this film was made by Sheffield filmmakers, Matt Exton and Sean Lovell and remarks on his
life before and after the tragedy he had to endure. The city will honour John with a Civic Celebration with the Lord Mayor Councillor Colin Ross hosting the proceedings, spoke very highly of the great man, “I’m very proud to be hosting a civic event for John Burkhill, whose achievements have been nothing short of outstanding. To raise over a million pounds for charity is no mean feat and it’s only right that we honour John’s achievements in a public setting for everyone to enjoy.” The mayor also added that he would like to see everyone who is attending be dressed in Macmillan green in honour of John. The presentation will be held at the Winter Gardens, city centre starting at 11 am for anyone wishing to attend to show their admiration for all he has achieved.
