Whilst you are enjoying the summer break do keep a check on your emails for updates from us!

Our students were invited to celebrate their success at the Gold Award Celebration, Buckingham Palace Gardens, on Friday 22 May. Here, they enjoyed the gardens, tea and cupcakes, chatting to HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, brass bands, and motivational speeches from Hugh Bonneville (Actor and Humanitarian Activist), Lucy Shepherd (Explorer), Tabitha Stoecker (Olympic Champion) and many more nd
recently completed her gold expedition in a wheelchair Everyone left feeling very inspired.
Completing the DofE Gold Award involves 52 hours of volunteering, 78 hours of physical activity and skills development, a 5-day residential to meet new people and learn new skills, and completion of a 4-day / 3-night Expedition

WHY DO DOFE?
Doing DofE is a brilliant way for you to discover just how much you are capable of It gives you the chance to explore new things, make new friends, follow your passions, learn new skills, make a difference in our community, and embark on exciting adventures! It is non-competitive and a powerful way for every young person to develop their selfconfidence, whatever their background, interests, and abilities
HOW IT WORKS:
To achieve the Gold Award, you complete four sections – Physical, Skills, Volunteering and Expedition – plus, undertake a Residential trip together as a cohort You choose what you would like to do for the first three sections, and we will provide all the guidance and support you need The Expedition involves spending four days and three nights camping in wild countryside, and again, we’ll make sure you are fully prepared for your challenging and memorable trip
DofE is a great way to engage in holistic personal development and maximise your sixth form experience We are excited to meet you and find out what you can do, and what we can do together!
This is a brilliant opportunity and a real achievement, recognising their hard work, dedication, and potential for a future career in law.

STUDENTS AWARDED PRESTIGIOUS LEGAL STUDY GRANTS
Huge congratulations to Long Road students Jasmine Jones and Yasmin Kociak-Gomes, who were invited to a special celebration event at the Cambridge offices of HCR Law, where they each received £1,000 study grants
The awards are part of the Hewitson Grant scheme, which offers aspiring law students the chance to receive financial support towards a future legal qualification, alongside valuable work experience with HCR Law during their degree
After being nominated by Long Road, students submitted competitive written applications outlining their passion for law, future ambitions, and the skills and qualities they would bring to
the profession Following a highly competitive selection process led by Head of HCR Cambridge Natalie Minott and The High Sheriff of Cambridge, five students were shortlisted and awarded £1,000 grants with Jasmine and Yasmin proudly among them. The judging panel highlighted just how strong the candidates were, noting how difficult it was to select a final winner.
Both students were praised for their outstanding applications Jasmine impressed with her curiosity, initiative and strong work ethic, while Yasmin was recognised for her commitment to extra-curricular activities alongside her studies
LONG ROAD NETBALL CROWNED 2026 TEAM OF
THE YEAR
The Long Road Netball Team has been recognised for an outstanding season after being named Cambridgeshire County Netball Association Team of the Year 2026
The award celebrates a season defined by hard work, resilience, teamwork, and exceptional sporting achievement Throughout the year, the squad has consistently demonstrated their commitment both on and off the court, representing the College with pride and determination at every opportunity
The team's most significant accomplishment came earlier this year when they qualified for the
AoC Sport National Championships for the very first time in the college's history. After winning the regional tournament to secure their place at the prestigious event, the team travelled to the University of Nottingham to compete against some of the best college netball teams in the UK, ultimately finishing 9th in the country
This is a well-deserved acknowledgement of everything the team has achieved this season Congratulations to all the players and staff involved in this remarkable achievement We look forward to seeing what the future holds for this talented group as they continue to build on an unforgettable season
Beyond the results, the award recognises the culture the players have built together. Through countless training sessions, matches, and competitions, the squad has shown exceptional teamwork, supported one another through every challenge, and consistently played with passion and professionalism.

STUDENTS HELP SHAPE THE FUTURE OF CAMBRIDGE
Long Road Sixth Form College students joined young people from across Cambridge last month to take part in the inaugural Cambridge Student Summit, a new event designed to give students a stronger voice in shaping the future of the city.
Held at Cambridge Guildhall on Thursday 18 June, the summit brought together students from the University of Cambridge, Anglia Ruskin University (ARU), Long Road Sixth Form College and other local education providers to engage directly with city leaders, decision-makers and community organisations
The event aimed to challenge the idea that students are simply temporary residents,
instead recognising them as active contributors to Cambridge's future. Throughout the day, students took part in talks, workshops, panel discussions and collaborative sessions, exploring the issues that matter most to young people living, studying and working in the city
Representing Long Road, students contributed to discussions on topics including transport, sustainability, community development and the future growth of Cambridge. They worked alongside local leaders and fellow students to share their perspectives and help shape conversations around the city's future.
STUDENTS HELP SHAPE THE FUTURE OF CAMBRIDGE
One of the day's highlights was a panel discussion exploring the unprecedented transformation taking place across Cambridge and how the city can continue to grow in an inclusive, sustainable and community-focused way Students also participated in interactive workshops, giving them the opportunity to put forward ideas directly to the people responsible for making local decisions.
The summit welcomed a number of high-profile speakers, including Daniel Zeichner MP for Cambridge, Pippa Heylings MP for South Cambridgeshire, Professor Deborah Prentice, ViceChancellor of the University of Cambridge, and Professor Roderick Watkins, ViceChancellor of Anglia Ruskin
University, alongside representatives from local government and the voluntary sector.
The event provided Long Road students with a valuable opportunity to engage with civic leaders, develop their confidence in discussing real-world issues, and play an active role in conversations that will help shape the future of Cambridge. It also reflected Long Road's commitment to empowering students to become informed, engaged citizens who can make a positive impact both within their communities and beyond.
Students are a very important part of Cambridge's community. It was encouraging to see students from different institutions coming together to discuss the issues that matter to them. If Cambridge is to grow in a way that is inclusive, sustainable and successful, young people must have a genuine voice in shaping the decisions that affect their lives.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: KATHERINE
I chose to study at Long Road because i had heard great things about the college from friends, and liked the friendly, relaxed atmosphere at the open day
Since completing my studies in English Literature, Art History and History I have completed an undergraduate degree in Art History at the University of York. I have also set up a blog about art in Yorkshire, which led me to work in editorial for a magazine about ceramic art in London I now work in communications and marketing for a research centre at the University of Cambridge
My favourite memory of Long Road is listening to our tutors bring their subjects to life in vivid language, with a depth of knowledge and infectious enthusiasm
The college helped me find new energy and interest in academia - especially in second year I learned how to write methodically and persuasively. Our wonderful English Literature tutor, Ann Jennison, supported my university applications, and shrewdly advised me to broaden the wording of my personal statement.
FILM STUDENTS GAIN INDUSTRY INSIGHT FROM ARU & LONG ROAD ALUMNI
Our A Level Film students were excited to be joined by two of the lecturers from the film and media team at Anglia Ruskin University, as well as a current student and Long Road Alumnus!
Dr Sarah Gibson Yates and Dr Harriet Fletcher brought with them ARU student, and former Long Road student, Louis Jeeves Louis highlighted the uniqueness of the film-making practices he has been able to learn at ARU, with the 8mm and Super8 filmmaking being particular highlights ARU is one of the few universities that also teaches students a more analogue approach to film-making. Louis talked about the synergy between the Long Road ethos and that of ARU, and that his
transition to studying at thishigher level felt smoother due to the similarities between the two institutions.
Sarah & Harriet talked with students from the A Level film studies and Applied Media 180 course about the facilities, opportunities and content of their film & media courses The ARU team also did a practical task using students' phone cameras to shoot a short sequence. With 20 minutes to plan and shoot, we were all impressed with the results that the students came back with Comments on the quality of cinematography, use of natural light and well-selected locations were all heard in reference to the student work
We hope to welcome the ARU Film and Media team back to Long Road again very soon.
