On a recent visit to Veniceâs Guggenheim Museum, London Clarion member Ian Moyler spotted âAu Velodromeâ, a modernist painting by the French artist Jean Metzinger. The work illustrates the final few metres of the 1912 ParisâRoubaix one day race, and portrays the winner Frenchman Charles Crupelandt. The race is one of the âFive Monumentsâ, held annually in early April, it is also known as the âHell of the Northâ due to its length, difficulty, and dangers of racing over the narrow, treacherous cobblestone roads of northern France.
