Despite the inconsistent weather across the country, footfall increased by a solid 6.9% on average for the weekend compared with the May average. DRS handling fee revealed With Deposit Return Schemes (DRS) scheduled to be implemented across the UK at various dates in the future, the handling fees that retailers will receive for returned containers when Scotland’s DRS goes live have been revealed. Scotland will be the first nation to implement a DRS on 16 August 2023. For retailers using approved automated Reverse Vending Machines, the fee will be 3.55p for the first 8,000 containers received each week and 1.35p for each additional container. For manual returns, retailers will receive 2.69p per container.

And it’s this key balance of support and flexibility that has helped to drive the business’s success over the intervening years and through its most recent refit in March 2022. “We had been growing year-on-year since 2015 and then the pandemic hit and provided us with a further massive lift,” Jim explains. “Local shoppers started to visit even more frequently and were buying bigger baskets, but we also attracted new shoppers from further afield,” Jim adds. “Fortunately, we’ve held on to those elevated sales levels, so in March 2022 we decided on another refit to keep that momentum going and provide an even better offer for our loyal shoppers.” That refit required a three-day closure which once again saw Jim and Leanne lead adopt a hands-on approach – including one memorable 22-hour day as the pair worked to bring their vision to life. An enhanced chilled offer with a far larger range of fresh meats, vegetables, dairy and ready meals has been key to achieving Jim and Leanne’s aim. “Chilled reached a new level of importance during the pandemic and we knew that growing our range of ‘meal for tonight’ and lunchtime solutions would help

Meanwhile, the store’s growing vape sales were being catered to with a new corner vape display at the edge of the counter. Outside, a smart new dark Londis fascia complements the store’s fresh new paint job. “We had a lot of ideas about how we wanted the store to look and Londis worked brilliantly with us on creating our vision. That kind of support is hugely reassuring. We really are a very happy store with a great team too. All our staff are local, many have worked here for years and they know most, if not all, of our local shoppers, as do we of course.” Needless to say, those local shoppers are thrilled with their new-look store. “Sales are growing week on week,” Jim says “and shoppers say they love what they see. We are just hitting the all-important summer season now which brings a lot of additional visitors to the area plus many second home owners. Many of those are just seeing the transformation for the first time and the reaction is overwhelmingly positive.

Theepan is also hopeful that his round-the clock operations will soon pay even further dividends when Aberdare’s nightclubs and late-night bars re-open, following the pandemic challenges. “Aberdare used to have a thriving night-time trade prior to the pandemic. There were three nightclubs open in the town, but they’ve been hit by the months of hospitality closures and things still haven’t returned to how they were. I’m hopeful that the situation will continue to improve over the summer and we can make even more of that late night trade.

We now sell a range of great-value ready meals alongside chilled ‘to go’ options and dairy products in a new three-metre chiller.” “Local shoppers are really happy with the new range of chilled ready meals, the quality is excellent but they are also very happy with the price. Unlike some other forecourt operators, I strive to keep our prices as competitive as possible. Forecourts are not traditionally the cheapest, but we want to change that perception by matching and ideally bettering the local competition when it comes to price.

We have been thrilled with the level of support that we have received from Londis since making that change and the direction that all of our sites are going. “The last 12 months have been quite disrupted in our sector with the fuel crisis, delivery issues and of course the ongoing impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, so it’s been wonderful to have that support from Londis and we are very happy with the way things are going. “Londis brought so much to the table

“The Londis offer allows us to be a proper neighbourhood store where shoppers can do a full grocery shop for a range of different meal occasions and taste preferences. It undoubtedly drives shoppers in.” And the store’s solid core range offer not only appeals to its legion of loyal locals, but also to the great many holidaymakers who flock to the tourist town over the summer season. “There are numerous Airbnb properties in and around Totnes, so we do also receive quite a lot of trade from visitors to the area who use us to buy their groceries during their stay,” he adds. “Unlike many of the town centre businesses we are lucky to have a large space outside of the store for parking, meaning that shoppers can come here with their cars and do those big shops, which is obviously a bonus.” The large space to the front and side of the store also allows Bob and Robert to add a further splash of colour and interest to their offer, in the form of an extensive range of plants and gardening products, plus bulky items such as topsoil, compost, logs and coal. “Shoppers love the range; we really try to offer them more than your average convenience store and they

FRUITY AND FLORAL FLAVOURS CONTINUE TO MIX UP SPIRITS Flavoured spirits are driving sales at the moment – especially fruit flavours. Berry and tropical flavours, such as raspberry, watermelon and passionfruit are particularly in demand during the warmer summer months as shoppers look to fruity flavoured vodkas and gins for easy, yet effective cocktail recipes. We’re also seeing developments in floral flavours this summer. JJ Whitley’s recently launched Rose Vodka, for example, tastes great paired with lemonade for a simple summer cocktail.

GINSTERS

CENTRAL BILLING

BRP POPULAR SUPPLIERS Sales from central billing supplier Ginsters are currently up double digit vs last year thanks to the growing demand for fresh ‘on the go’ options as shoppers get back out and about. Londis retailers who sell 150 sandwiches a week (at an average RSP of £2.99) have an opportunity to “make over £10,000 per year” with the Ginsters range which includes Urban Eat Sandwiches (Gluten Free, Vegan/Vegetarian), Salads, Ginsters Pastries and Food to Go.

EXCLUSIVE RETAILER LAUNCH DEALS

Central billing also allows Londis retailers to unlock an array of exclusive deals from its broad base of well-known and trusted suppliers including Frozen Brothers, Country Choice, Snowshock, Ginsters, Celtic Frozen Drinks and many more. Taking advantage of these Booker Exclusive launch deals can be a great way of driving footfall and boosting those all-important cash profits. ‘10p off all Urban Eat sandwiches for new customers’ and ‘10% off the lease price of Tango Ice Blast machines’ are just some of the great deals available.

BONDS CONFECTIONERY The confectionery company can help retailers to make up to 35% POR on its wide range, which includes 40 sweetshop favourites, kids’ products and on-trend American Confectionery with in-demand brands including Mega Mallows, Jelly Beans and Nerds. HAVE YOUR SAY… Central billing has a great many benefits but the key one has to be time-saving. As independent retailers we are incredibly busy, so anything that helps to reduce time-consuming administration is a great positive. Central billing streamlines everything for us, it makes accounting so much quicker and easier as costs are charged weekly and set up as one direct debit. Simpler streamlined services such as these help to free up my time so that I can focus on growing other areas of the business. I would urge all Londis retailers to make use of this valuable service!

LIQUID LINES

Arjan Mehr, Londis Great Hollands, Bracknell

The Londis Central Billing directory also features a number of new and on-trend suppliers which can help retailers tap into the sizable and growing ‘drinks to go’ opportunity. The F’real offer, for example, gives Londis retailers the chance to “make over £15,000 per year” (based on purchasing cases of F’Real at £22.50 and selling 200 cups a week at £3.49. One retailer who is already milking the profits is Jeet Bansi, of Meon Vale Londis in Long Marston. “The F’real machine has been an excellent addition to the store, driving footfall and generating sales. During the first week we made sales of £920, which we expect to increase further over the summer months. I would strongly recommend to any retailer.” Also available via Central Billing is Tango Ice Blast, from Frozen Brother’s, which offers Londis retailers the opportunity to make PORs of up to 70%. Londis retailers can also secure a range of benefits and savings on machine rental and syrups.

social media Social media is an excellent way of reaching a far wider audience of potential shoppers and generating fresh footfall, as well as sales and profits.
