LOGAN’S “CHIROPRACTIC PROFESSIONALS NIGHT WITH THE CARDINALS” IS THIS FRIDAY Congratulations to the four lucky individuals who purchased tickets to the “Chiropractic Professionals Night with the Cardinals” game and won the opportunity to walk onto the field at Busch Stadium with Drs. George and Elizabeth Goodman for the “first- pitch” ceremony before the Friday, July 8 game at Busch Stadium. They are: Sr. Sheila Bennett, Academic Affairs; Carol Guntorius, Admissions; Tri 5 student Patrick McNamara; and Tri 9 student Bethany Meeks. The special Grand Finale drawing was held on Friday, July 1 at a festive rally in the lobby of the Purser Center where Dr. George Goodman received a special Cardinals jersey with his name lettered on the back with the #1. KMOX sports director Tom Ackerman served as master of ceremonies at the rally. The winner of the drawing for two Cardinals Club green section box seat tickets in the second row behind home plate for the July 8 game was Robey Taylor. Additional tickets for Cardinal games (courtesy of Dr. George Goodman) from July 4 through July 10 were also raffled off as names were pulled from the $5 ticket pool. The winner of the class solidarity special prize – the trimester with the most tickets purchased – was Trimester 1. Tri 1 students will receive a pizza party on July 6. The theme is “Vaccines!” This is an important topic for detailed discussion. So, come to this Fireside Chat and join us. The Fireside Chat series is sponsored by the Pi Kappa Chi Fraternity. Lemonade will be served. The Student American Chiropractic Association (SACA) will host a guest speaker at 11 a.m. Monday July 11 in room 142 A. Logan’s Dr. Martha Kaeser will present a lecture on "Cardiovascular Disease in Women" which will include a presentation as well as an ultra-sonographic vascular demonstration. Dr. Jay Elliott reports that NCMIC is scheduled to be on campus on July 12 to present its annual “Starting into Practice” seminar to the trimester 7, 8 and 9 students. The speakers will Ms. Ginger Marcinkowski and Dr. Braxton Pulley. The seminar will be in the Purser Center from 8-11:30 a.m.
The Logan College Student Doctors’ Council (SDC) will be sponsoring a movie night on Tuesday, July 12. This event was made possible by Logan alumnus Dr. Loomis, DC, FIACA. The movie being shown is "Source Code." There will be a catered meal beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the Purser Center, followed by a show time of 8:30pm (sundown) for the movie. The running time of the movie is 93 minutes. Popcorn, candy and drinks will also be available. An admission price of $3 will cover the cost of food, drink, popcorn and one piece of candy. Please take a study break and come join us for a great night. Families are welcome and encouraged to attend! On June 26, Logan faculty member Dr. Gary Guebert and students David Binversie, Joel Rahn, and Case Ruckman represented Logan at the 16th annual William L. Clay Scholarship & Research Fund invitational golf tournament held at Greenbriar Hills Country Club in Kirkwood. Touring professional Robert Gamez and aspiring high school golfer Mary Fran Hillow put on a clinic prior to the event. The Logan team played in the shamble format under soggy and windy conditions and managed to finish at 8 under par which was good for second place. Welcome to Amanda (Mandy) French and Ayda M. Equbay, two new part-time library assistants, who began work at Logan on Tuesday, June 28. Both come to Logan with library experience. Mandy is completing a BA in English while working as a library assistant at Lindenwood University. She is the co-president of the Word Society at Lindenwood University and editorial and publishing staff member of the Arrowrock Literacy Journal. She was the editor in chief of Images in Ink Literacy Magazine. Ayda is completing her pharmacy school prerequisite courses while working as a library front desk agent and multimedia lab assistant at St. Louis Community College. Her background includes: tutoring, customer service at Barnes and Noble, customer relations for IFIG in Abu Dhabi, and work experience as a marketing assistant for Excel properties in Dubai. Two Logan students have been selected as senior interns this trimester at the Logan clinic at Scott Air Force Base. They are Holly Tucker and Kevin Ward. Dr. Kevin Winkle, an August 1997 graduate of Logan, was recently appointed as the staff chiropractic physician at the John J. Pershing Medical Center in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. Dr. Winkle is the first chiropractor to ever have worked here and is in charge of setting up the chiropractic department within the facility. He is one of fewer than 50 chiropractors currently working for the VA Healthcare System. LOGAN COLLEGE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION NEWS The Logan College of Chiropractic Alumni Association recently honors two of New Jersey’s finest doctors of chiropractic, who just happen to be Logan graduates, at a June 25 Homecoming reception in the Standard Process® Student Center on campus. Dr. Alan Epstein was named to a two-year term as the LCAA’s new president and received the president’s gavel from Dr. David Poe (class of Dec. 1996) of Oakville, Kentucky who served in this capacity for the two years. Dr. Steven Clarke was named Logan College of Chiropractic Alumnus-of- the-Year. He currently serves as president of the Association of New Jersey Chiropractors (ANJC). An April 1993 Logan graduate, Dr. Epstein attended Brookdale/Monmouth College in New Jersey and served 16 years on the Logan Alumni Board of Directors. He has been honored in the past with their Distinguished Service Award, as well. Along with other members of the Logan Alumni Association, a recent donation of $50,000 was made to the Logan Student Learning Center. Dr. Clarke accepted the award on behalf of “all ANJC members who have helped make a positive difference for the profession and thanked Logan College for the vision and leadership in chiropractic.”

RESEARCH DIVISION SURVEY PROVES A SUCCESS Chiropractic education at Logan meets rigorous standards established internally and as required by external accreditation agencies. Such standards include criteria for chiropractic physicians’ knowledge and competency in conducting patient health histories and physical exams. Drs. George and Elizabeth Goodman developed the idea of surveying Logan alumni’s practices with respect to patients’ health histories and physical exams. Working with the Drs. Goodman, Dr. Tepe and Chabha Tepe developed a 413-item survey to assess Logan Alumni history and exam practices with their patients. The Tepes, assisted by librarian Christina Prucha and student Jonathan Emlet, distributed 222 surveys during Homecoming, of which 136 completed surveys were returned – an outstanding response rate. These extensive data will be transcribed onto an Excel spreadsheet after which data analysis will report descriptive summary statistics and analyses of group comparisons by gender, years in practice and number of patients seen per week. Incentives to participate included a raffle for free In Touch articles and free books (provided by Chabha through the LRC) and an iPad2 provided by the President’s office. Prize winners were Sheryl McGuire, Christina Christiansen and Renee Rheinecker (books); Melanie Littleton (In Touch articles); and Paul West (iPad2). CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL NEEDS VOLUNTEERS – LOGAN STUDENTS INVOLVED Matthew Viejo, a Tri 9 Logan student and a coordinator at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, is seeking volunteers Children's Hospital's 2011 Teaming Up For Kids scratch-and-win ticket promotion which kicks off in July and hopes you can help. Eighty (80) volunteers are needed to sell $1 tickets at the ballpark. Volunteers will work as two-member teams, so please invite a friend or family member to join you. If you sign up as an individual, you will be paired with someone. Volunteers should be personable, responsible and able to work outside in possibly high temperatures. Because of the rather physical nature of the work and because the job involves handling cash, we are unable to accommodate volunteers under the age of 16. APPLIED KINESIOLOGY CLUB MEETS JULY 5 The Applied Kinesiology Club will meet Tuesday, June 28 at 11:05 a.m. in room G40. Dr. Katharine Conable, associate professor in the Chiropractic Science division, will teach the Tuesday meetings of the A.K. club, beginning with the most basic basics of A.K. Through the trimester, videos of Dr. Goodheart telling his stories of the early discoveries in AK and patient management clinical pearls will be shown. Tuesday’s meeting affords an opportunity to practice these and more advanced AK skills with the help of club officers and experienced club members. All trimester students are welcome to these hands-on workshops. No previous experience required. Learn to evaluate muscle function with scientific precision and to use muscle responses as functional neurological feedback. Gain certainty on your ability to correct postural deviations and to identify subluxations. Learn simple manual methods of optimizing muscle function to prevent injury and help adjustments hold. SUBJECTS NEEDED FOR RESEARCH STUDIES Danielle Spath, DC, MS, CCSP, assistant director of sports and rehabilitation, and Melissa Engelson, DC, a resident in the BIOFREEZE® Sports & Rehabilitation Center, are recruiting subjects for a research project entitled, “Effects of Lumbar ROM Exercise on Multifidus Cross Sectional Area of Asymptomatic and Symptomatic Low Backs.” Participants will take part in a six-week trial of Lumbar ROM exercise. Expected duration of the exams will be approximately one hour (initially) and 10 minutes (follow up). Participants with or without low back pain between the ages of 18-55 not currently receiving treatment may qualify for this study. Diagnostic imaging fellow, Eve E. Bonic, DC, DACBR, is recruiting subjects for a second research project entitled, “Ultrasonographic Evaluation of the Anterior Talofibular Ligament: Thickness of Injured Ligaments.” Subjects between the ages of 18-45 who have had ankle pain or an ankle sprain within the past year and who do not have a history of ankle fracture, ankle surgery or diabetes mellitus qualify for this study.
