Claudio Ferreira

I did a project about holidays and found out that even in ancient Rome people took time off from work. They often visited ancient Greek monuments and theatres in new cities, and went to the beach in summer. They had maps and guidebooks, just like we do today. My classmates and I didn’t realise that holidays were such an old concept.
0 The author learnt that …
A holidays in Rome were the same as he expected.
B few in his class knew that Romans had holidays.
C holidays have always existed.
However, holidays in ancient Rome weren’t a part of life for everybody . Most of the population worked long hours to make enough money to live. Only rich Romans had free time. And, as hotels or B&Bs didn’t exist, you needed to have a second home. Also, they went for much longer than our typical holidays, up to two years at a time. The word ‘holiday’ had a very different meaning for them than it does for us. After the fall of the Roman Empire, this stopped happening
1 Who went on holiday in ancient Rome?
A Only people with hotels.
B Only people who worked long hours.
C Only people with a lot of mone y.
The idea of holidays became popular again in the 19th century. If you were in England, you would see familiar scenes of people at the beach making sandcastles, eating ice-cream and sailing. But, back then not many people went into the water. The water was dirty, people couldn’t swim, and they needed long clothes to avoid sunburn. These ‘holidays’ were only day trips by train or horse and cart for most people. Until the 20th century ordinary workers couldn’t pay to stay overnight somewhere.
2 How were 19th century holidays similar to holidays now?
A G oing to the seaside was popular.
B Everyone went on holidays close to home.
C Holidays were usually just one day.
However, in 1938 a new law gave workers in England one week of paid holidays every year. The idea of the modern holiday was born. Today, holidays are an important part of most people’s lives in my country, we all expect to have them. If we were living one hundred years ago, that might not be true! Be thankful to the people who made them possible.
3 What might the writer say about modern holidays?
A A moder n holiday is one that everyone can afford.
B Holidays nowadays are something everyone must have.
C Our holidays are not as long as the Romans’ holidays, but we can go to much better places.

BY KERRY AND MARK
You don’t always need to cross a border to learn about other countries. You don’t need luggage, a visa or foreign currency. We don’t always go away in the summer because it’s high season and very expensive. Last summer, we had a ‘staycation’ and travelled at home instead. It was great!
MONDAY

We love Indian film music and dancing, so we’ve been watching lots of Bollywood music videos online. We decided to take an online Bollywood dance class so that we could dance like the stars in the films. We learnt a Bollywood dance and made a film of ourselves dancing. It was a lot of fun! We wanted to watch a few Bollywood films, but in the end, we only watched one. They’re really long! When people go to the cinema in India, they expect it to last for a whole afternoon or evening.
FRIDAY
Egypt is an amazing destination and the Pyramids are among the world’s most famous sights. We decided to learn about hieroglyphics, the ancient Egyptian writing system. The writing looks like pictures, and sometimes the pictures describe things, but they can also be a kind of letter. We went online and found out how to read hieroglyphics. We even tried to write our own names in hieroglyphics! Try it! Although I’m not sure we succeeded, we had a lot of fun.

TUESDAY
We have always wanted to go to Japan, so we decided to make some Japanese food – sushi. We were able to get the ingredients and equipment, but now we know that you need a lot of training to be a sushi chef. It was hard because you have to pay attention to so many details. Some chefs in Japan say that it takes them years just to learn how to make the rice. Our rice was not very good, but in the end our sushi tasted great, anyway!
WEDNESDAY
Wednesday was sports day. Well, we were in the USA! Playing team sports is an important part of the culture there. Americans say it’s a way to learn about fairness and respect, not to mention staying fit! We have been playing football, tennis and rugby for years, but today we tried playing baseball, basketball and American football. We played in the park with friends. We didn’t have the right facilities, but it was fun!

THURSDAY – Uganda
Thursday was Uganda day. Uganda is one of only a few countries in the world where you can see gorillas in nature. There aren’t many of them left in the world, so we have to protect them. We’re lucky – our local zoo has gorillas, so we went to see them there. We learnt all about what the gorillas eat and where they live, and what the zoo has been doing to protect them. Now we really want to travel to Uganda and see gorillas in their natural home in the forest.

1 What things annoy you about the people you live with? Discuss with a partner.
2 Read the article. Who do you think is right – Oliver or Victoria?
Living with my wife Victoria has made me realise how much her phone habits annoy me. She loves having her phone on full volume with a song playing loudly every time she gets a call. We both work from home and the noise of her phone makes it difficult for me to concentrate. Even in the evenings, our private time is interrupted by the constant pinging of her phone. I told her to turn the phone off at night, but she wasn’t happy.
I always keep the sound on my phone so I can see my messages. I run my own business, so I have to be available for customers at all times. I don’t think Oliver really understands how important it is for me. My ringtone isn't any more annoying than anyone else’s. I listened to him and I turn my phone off at night now. However, I do worry that I might not see customer requests. I’m happy to try and be more present after work, but I won’t turn off my phone’s sound.

3 Read the article again. What reasons does each person give to support their argument?
4 Work in pairs. What other reasons can you think of to support Oliver and Victoria’s arguments? What do you think is the best solution for them?
5 Look at the advice for having a debate. Put the steps (a–h) in order. Compare your ideas with a partner.

2 Follow steps 1–5 from Exercise 5.
9 Have your debate and make a video recording of it. Remember to listen and respond respectfully. Then decide which pair had the better arguments.
10 Review the video of your debate and discuss the questions.
