We continue to honour our heritage of traditional craftsmanship while embracing the challenges of a changing world. Now we have completed our second year of measuring our carbon footprint, we’re proud to report that the choices we’ve made have led to measurable reductions in emissions per metre of fabric. These are small but meaningful steps on our journey towards Net Zero.

Equally significant is our commitment to local sourcing. Nearly one-third of our annual wool usage now comes from Scottish farms which has been a major investment over the past three years and one we’re incredibly proud of. Supporting local producers not only strengthens our community ties but also reinforces our dedication to sustainable, traceable textiles.

Our Selkirk Tweed™ is made from 100% pure new wool and 50% of the wool is of Scottish origin. As we continue our environmental journey one of our aims is to increase our use of Scottish sourced wool for our fabrics and accessories. The Selkirk Tweed™ stock range comprises of nine classic tartans interpreted to reflect our natural environment and have been woven with a kilting selvedge. This quality is based on our premium Strome™ cloth and is a beautiful addition to our stocked tartans.

A Fly Plaid is usually worn over the left shoulder and harks back to the days when ‘kilts’ were less structured, more akin to a length of cloth where part of this was thrown over the shoulder. The modern Fly Plaid gives a spectacular lift to your look.

Our heavyweight Scottish wool kilt fabric is firm and durable, has an excellent swing and it is ideal for kilts. It has also been used to great effect in many other applications, from upholstery to bags, in classic cars to catwalk classics it oozes Scottish authenticity.

Considered by many to be the premium kilt fabric, it is available in a collection of over 500 stock supported tartans we aim to ensure all are in stock or in the process of being made to replenish stocks.

Our lightweight fabric is available in a collection of around 500 authentic tartans, estate style checks and solid colours. These are generally available from stock or if not currently in stock they are likely to be in the process of being made to replenish stocks.

With a nice drape and handle the ReiverTM fabric has a wide application of uses. It has been used successfully in many clothing types from jackets to ties, skirts to dresses, head wear and even shoes. In traditional Scottish wear it is successful in sashes, cummerbunds, wraps and as a lightweight kilt cloth.

Additionally it works well in interiors as cushions, curtains and light use upholstery.

Sold by the linear metre, we are happy to quote for cut lengths and bulk orders, please ask our sales team for further details.

We also offer a design service, whether for international design houses requiring bespoke textiles, for individuals looking to have their own family tartan, for non-textile applications, or to mark special events or raise awareness for charities or many other purposes, we can design a tartan or bespoke textile for clients.

All our fabric qualities have been tested to BS EN 14465:2003 Abrasion Resistance and to BS EN 1021-1:2014, BS EN 10212:2014 Flammability Resistance.

Our lightweight ReiverTM quality passes the abrasion test for Light Domestic use making it suitable for throw cushions, loose covers and similar.

Our medium and heavier weight BraeriachTM and StromeTM qualities are suitable for Heavy Domestic use, such as upholstery, from stock.

We also offer a bespoke treatment service to upgrade our BraeriachTM and StromeTM quality to Severe Contract use (Crib 5) if required.

Tartan Design Service

As the world’s leading manufacturer of tartan, we are all passionate about the tartan we design and make here in Scotland. Tartan is the thread woven through our history and is the story of our future.

With our rich textile heritage and contemporary design capabilities it is very fitting that we offer a bespoke service for tartan design. Inspired by your tartan brief, our in-house design team will create tartan patterns as prints generated through our CAD system. These designs can then be sent to you electronically or in print format for approval. Alternatively a more interesting option for you would be to visit the mill and work directly with our skilled design team and use this as an opportunity to see just how we dye, warp, weave and prepare our fabrics and accessories ready for our customers.

We can also guide you through the process of registering your tartan with The Scottish Register of Tartan ensuring its place in tartan history.

As well as creating your own tartan, you can have your design converted into a wide choice of fabrics and accessories made here at our mill in Scotland.
