lthough I wouldn’t call myself a fanatic, I enjoy a show every now and then. My first Broadway performance was The Lion King, which I saw on the big stage in New York City—it was beautiful, seemingly effortless and certainly a spectacle. That was in spring 2012, and though I haven’t seen another Broadway show, I’ve been to many high school stage productions and have enjoyed streaming productions—Hamilton, anyone? In this celebratory Best of Woodbury issue, not only are we celebrating the people, places and things that make our community the best of the best, we’re also commemorating the venues that bring a true sense of community to our homes. Our bakery makes the best fresh pizza dough—which is the hardest part about homemade pizza. It’s one of those hidden gems that once customers find it, they

can’t get enough of. It looks a little intimidating in the package, but it’s very soft and fairly sticky, and it’s coated in a generous layer of olive oil to give it great flavor. I love to leave mine out on the counter for several hours before I roll it so that the gluten relaxes. (Warmer dough is much easier to work with.) You’ll want to use a fair amount of flour to keep the dough from sticking to your hands and your work surface, and work it gently. If

Greek philosopher Heraclitus still rings true today as the world continues to develop. New trends are catching on everywhere, from fashion to interior design. One Woodbury company that stays on top of new design trends is undergoing some changes of its own. After 21 years, Pomegranate Interiors, formerly known as Pomegranate Designs, is getting a facelift. Roxanne Potter is now the sole owner since her business partner retired, and will be focusing strictly on interior design. This change means there’s no more retail store, but it gives Potter more time to focus on designing instead of stocking shelves. “I love working with people, so I miss the interaction in the showroom,” Potter says. “But my passion is and always has been design.” When Potter started in the design industry in 2001, her job consisted of picking out furniture and carpeting, but the job has grown and developed. Now she’s choosing lighting fixtures, window treatments and countertops and even removing walls. “The industry has exploded so much since I originally got into it,” Potter says. “So much has changed.” For projects requiring extensive work, such as gutting rooms and tearing down walls, Potter works with a contractor. Some clients hire their own contractor, which is OK with her. Otherwise, she’ll work with one of her own contractors. Most of Pomegranate Interior’s work is in residential homes, and it has been around long enough that Potter’s seeing repeat clients—whether it’s for the same home, a new home

or perhaps a vacation home. Others want an update as trends change. Some homes are at the age where the kitchens and bathrooms need updating to the plumbing, and it’s a good time to make some design updates as well. “Every job is different,” Potter says. Supply chain issues have delayed some projects, but Potter knows she’s not the only one fighting that battle and is working to combat it. She’s partnered with a local framer and a few licensed art companies, so customers can pick out a piece of art, have it printed and then framed close to home. “It becomes custom for the customer, and I save on shipping,” Potter says. “It really works out.” While the merchandise will differ from its original store, Potter is working on a showroom in Woodbury for people to see different vignettes and get an idea of what they’d like to do in their home. She’s also hoping to give seminars again to bring people in the door. “I’m hoping to get back into that and build some community,” Potter says. “I think people want to get out and be with other people again.” Despite a few hiccups, Potter is excited to be on this new journey. She’s staying busy, and there’s no sign of slowing down. HONEY MANGO SALSA PORK CHOP INGREDIENTS: 2 pork chops 2 Tbsp. butter 3 Tbsp. honey 2 Tbsp. soy sauce, low sodium 2 cloves garlic, crushed or minced ¼ cup chicken stock, low sodium 2 Tbsp. apple cider vinegar 1 Jerry’s Foods mango salsa container (recommended) salt, to taste pepper, to taste garlic powder, to taste
Season the pork chops with salt, pepper and garlic powder, and cook on the grill for a minute or two on each side. (The intent is to cook the outside but not quite finish them internally, yet.) Once mostly cooked, set aside and start the glaze. In a cast iron dish or pan, melt the butter, soy sauce, garlic, honey, chicken stock and apple cider vinegar until thick enough to glaze the pork chops without falling off. Glaze the pork chops and return them to direct heat to continue cooking; flip them every so often for even cooking on both sides. Remove from heat once the internal temperate reaches 145 degrees F. At this point, the glaze should be charcoal kissed and the edges should be crispy. Recommended Tip: For a sweet way to beat the heat, top finished pork chops with Jerry’s Foods mango salsa and enjoy!
Grill set up: Indirect heat; all the coals on half the charcoal grill, or half the burners on one side of the gas grill. Grill should be 400–450-degree F on the hot side and 275–300-degrees F on the off-heat side.

AS THE COMMUNITY rapidly grows and evolves, the Woodbury Heritage Society continuously provides and creates new ideas on how to get residents curious, interested and involved in the rich history of the city. Through education and preservation, it gives city goers an inside glimpse of what Woodbury once was. “The preservation of history is important because it helps us understand where we came from,” says Wayne Schilling, president of the Woodbury Heritage Society. As a former farming mecca, Red Rock Township (now Woodbury and Newport) was originally inhabited by the Dakota tribe. After the first settlers arrived in the early 1840s, they adhered to traditional farming techniques to advance production and contribute to the growth of the community—wheat, dairy and livestock. When it was learned that there was already an existing Red Rock town, the region changed its name in 1859 in honor of former U.S. secretary of treasury Levi Woodbury. And the rest is history. “We can learn from this [history] about how to work together and keeping some of this older stuff is important because it gives us a tie to information that many families don’t have,” Schilling says. In an effort to restore what remains, Schilling says it is important to acknowledge the influence that former structures and artifacts have had on our world today. “We have lost some really historic places in Woodbury for development that cannot be replaced,” he says. “We [the Heritage Society] like to think of it as if it wasn’t for us being the social conscious for history, that all of those things would be lost.”

WOODBURY HERITAGE SOCIETY EXHIBIT Sixteen years in the making, the Washington County Heritage Center finally opened in fall 2021 as a facility exclusive to the history of the region. The center is home to three permanent exhibits, a rotational exhibit space, a classroom, a research center, gift shop and storage hub for antique artifacts. Created as a way to capture the spirit of the county, viewers can marvel at the fashion of the 1860s and 1960s, learn about the 19th century photographer and Stillwater native John Runk or try their hand at crosscut sawing in the lumberjack logging exhibit. Through September 2022, the Woodbury Heritage Society is showcasing a variety of its artifacts from the city’s peak farming days such as a corn planter, milk jugs (five, eight and 10 gallons), butter churns, a wooden yoke, chests, tools, sewing wheels, toys and more. All of the items showcased are a combination of pieces donated from its archives and the Heritage House. The exhibit also features a slab from the Woodbury’s Witness Tree, a burr oak formerly located on Radio Drive, that was estimated to have sprouted in 1738. Used as the city’s natural landmark, it was once used as a tool to help individuals navigate the vast farmland. Growing to be more than 200 years, it was eventually cut down due to infection. As one who grew up in Woodbury, Schilling says it is amazing to see younger generations learn and appreciate elements from his past and beyond. “[The exhibit and its artifacts] represents how times have changed … and for the most part, for the better,” he says. The center is open Tuesdays through Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $8 for adults and $3 for children.

Built in the early 1870s the Heritage House was an attachment to the original log cabin home of German immigrant and property owner Fredrick Raths. Formerly used as a kitchen and living quarters, the structure was eventually moved on site to make room for a rebuild of the original home. Though the home has changed its interior purpose over the years across four generations of farmers, the home still remains in modern times as a relic of the olden days. Today, the house sits on the corner of Radio Drive and Lake Road in Marsh Creek as a symbol of early Woodbury settlement and architecture—just 1,000 feet over from where it was originally built. Just outside the doors of the home sits a flourishing garden, aptly named the “Heritage Garden.” Like its tradition entails, the garden embodies the value of agriculture and the traditional approaches to land cultivation. The garden grounds host a variety of trees, a vegetable garden, butterfly garden and heirloom plants (crops that would have been grown by Woodbury settlers, such as tomatoes, pumpkins, corn, cucumbers, barley, potatoes and sunflowers) that are all maintained by volunteers. Story by Hailey Almsted After many theater venues went dark in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19, audiences were searching for other entertainment options, including virtual performances. Now, local stages are welcoming back their crowds—and in Woodbury, the passion for theater runs in its roots. “So much of what makes theater theater is the audience,” says Katie Carlson, East Ridge High School (ERHS) theater coordinator. Woodbury High School 11th grade student Kyra Sego agrees. “What theater means to me is having kind of a break from reality; where nothing else matters for a couple of hours, and you can just have fun singing, dancing and acting with your favorite people,” Kyra says. “At the end, you can put on a show that makes people happy, laugh or even cry.” So cue the curtains, and grab your tickets! We’re welcoming back the best performance venues around town. • The Loft Stage Located at ERHS and home to the high school’s band, orchestra, choir and theater, The Loft Stage hosts several types of performances each year. The 2021–2022 season includ-

ed The SpongeBob Musical, which was recognized with 18 Hennepin Theatre Trust Spotlight Awards, Frankenstein 1930 and The Tempest by William Shakespeare. “[The Loft Stage] was created as an auditorium for the high school, but we are a community space,” says Carlson, who has been with the high school since it opened in 2009. “We really wanted the space to be welcoming to the community and over the years it has evolved, but the intention is the same.” Although the stage has staff members assisting the students, Carlson says it’s truly the young adults that create the magic. “Once the show is going and it’s tech week, the directors sit back and watch the students work, problem solve and make it happen,” she says. “It can be nervewracking, but it’s so rewarding to see kids take the helm.” The 938-seat facility also serves as the primary venue for the Merrill Arts Center (MAC) and partners with several organizations, including the Minnesota Thespian Society, Spotlight Musical Theatre Program and Kirk Portrait Designs. The fall 2020 play was a radio play with three casts, “where the students were separated by plexiglass and performed as radio actors,” Carlson says. The radio play, A Trio of Thrilling, included The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allan Poe, The Mark of the Beast by Rudyard Kipling and The Canterville Ghost by Oscar Wilde. The spring 2021 performance of Grease was held in the ERHS parking lot and was its first in-

Black Box Theater, East Metro Symphony and other local art groups. Originally incorporated as the Woodbury Arts Council in 1996, MAC was founded by a group of citizens who served as the voice for the arts during Woodbury’s booming growth. What first operated as an allvolunteer organization with a $25,000 annual budget turned into a multimillion-dollar fine arts center following the death of Dorothy K. Merrill. Her $1.2 million donation was used to build the Merrill Black Box at ERHS. MAC also started hosting summer camps for youth and year-round educational programming, and launched an affiliate program for varying art groups. In 2005, MAC acquired the Woodbury Community Theatre (WCT). Originally founded in 1975 by Gloria Dale, Marjorie Wetz and Sharon Wivell, WCT
started small—it performed just one show in its first year. The following year, WCT presented Sing Out Sweet Land for three evenings at Woodbury High School (WHS). It continued to grow and, in 1978, became known as the Community Theatre Guild of Woodbury. In 1990, following the death of Wetz, the theater renamed to what is currently. In its last season, MAC performances included Miss Nelson is Missing and Madeline’s Christmas.

person performance since winter 2020. “We extended the stage and safely put on our musical under the stars,” Carlson says. “It was a challenge and one we’re hoping not to revisit, but as theater makers, we try to be creative and adapt. After all, the show must go on.” As for the next year, Carlson hopes that The Loft Stage will be back to business as usual. Legally Blonde and The Play That Goes Wrong are on deck for the fall 2022 and spring 2023 season.

THANK YOU WOODBURY FOR THE NOMINATION OF Open Door Community Theatre’s (ODCT) mission is to “not only stage high-quality productions, but also to give back to our community by donating a portion of our shows’ proceeds to local charity partners,” says Stacey Dolan, ODCT board member, noting that the opening production of Shrek the Musical raised nearly $11,000 for the Christian Cupboard Emergency Food Shelf in Oakdale. In 2020, the theater partnered with Woodbury’s Aspire Music Academy and Somerset, Wisconsin-based Coco’s Heart Dog Rescue. This year, it’s partnering with SoWashCo CARES for its summer production of The Little Mermaid. (ODCT took a pause during 2021 due to COVID for the safety of its volunteers and audience.) To this day, every participant in the theater is a volunteer. “... From the board members to the production teams, including directors, cast and crew,” Dolan says. ODCT takes an inclusive approach, meaning no one is turned away from a production. “Whether it is on the stage, behind the scenes or administratively,” she says. Dolan is excited for this summer’s production as well as its 2023 show, Godspell. “We have received a very positive response from the community in anticipation of our return this summer, and we’re all just so happy to be together again, doing what we love and giving people the opportunity to get involved,” she says. On top of its summer and winter performances, Dolan says there will be a fundraising gala in the fall featuring more singing and dancing. So, even though the show was shortened, it was just as fun to put on.” Musical director Brooklyn Schwiesow says it will be challenging to top its latest season, which included Chicago (High School Edition), Kafka’s Metamorphosis and Clue. “Chicago received 22 Spotlight Awards, including the top honor of an ‘Outstanding’ in Achievement in Musical Theatre, which earned the cast and crew the opportunity of performing a medley on the State Theater stage,” she says, noting that the production was part of the Spotlight Education program through the Hennepin Theatre Trust. “We hope that this success is motivation for our students to continue producing outstanding theater.” Its next round of performances
hasn’t been announced quite yet, though Kyra says she’s excited to see what else the Royal Theatre has in store for her senior year. Schwiesow agrees. “Royal Theatre has a lot of incredible talent. The students are hard working, diligent and have a future in theater if they choose to pursue their passion,” she says. “Royal Theatre is a place for safety, inclusion and acceptance. Jon Hagen, recreation technician for Woodbury Parks and Recreation, says this year will be full of fun. Some things included in this year’s festivities are food trucks, vendors similar from last year, live music and a kid zone bounce house. The kid zone will be open from 6–8:30 p.m. and the firework display will start around 10 p.m. Hagen is also excited about the live music. He says, “Our band this year is Free Fallin, it is a Tom Petty tribute band and live music will play from 7 p.m. until the start of the fireworks.” This event is free, but make sure to bring your own blankets and chairs to watch the dazzling display. —Hanna McDaniels

Photos should be taken in Woodbury. Generally, photos should have been taken within a year of the submission date. Readers’ Choice voting takes place in September at woodburymag.com.
