A very short welcome this month as the issue is packed with lots of our amazing local businesses and news stories. The feature on page 6 and 7 about a few local animal rescues is well worth a read. As always please support local where you can including these amazing places that go above and beyond. With October being the next issue there will be a few features on, dare I say it, Christmas! If you have a story or would like to get you business delivered directly to 10,000 homes in Lowton and Golborne please get in touch. Until then take care and stay safe.

Covid 19 Updates from Wigan Borough Council
GCSE results We would like to congratulate all of our school age children on their A-level and GCSE results .We know that the last few months have been an unsettling and uncertain time for our children and young people and want to congratulate them on adapting to the sudden changes we have been faced with. Following the U-turn from national government earlier this week announcing that A level and GCSE results will now be based on teacher assessments, unless grades produced by the Ofqual algorithm are higher, we hope our young people got the results that they deserved. If your child needs guidance after receiving their grades, visit our website here. www.wigan.gov.uk/LINC2/SurvivalGuide/Education-and-work/Support-for-exam-results-2020.aspx We wish all of our children good luck in their future endeavours! Covid-19 and returning to school We’ve been made aware of a false social media post circulating regarding the process for pupils displaying symptoms of Covid-19. The post claims that if a child presents symptoms while at school, they will be removed without parental consent. This is false. If a child displays symptoms, parents will be contacted directly and asked to take their child for a test. They will also be asked to self-isolate in line with the current restrictions. Easing of Lockdown in Wigan After Greater Manchester leaders urged the government to review the regional Covid-19 rules on 20th August, restrictions in Wigan Borough will be eased and residents will now need to follow national guidelines. Wigan Borough’s new infection rate has remained very low in comparison to neighbouring areas, so rules restricting certain businesses to reopen and mixing of households are set to be lifted. Following a steady decline in positive cases in the region, Greater Manchester council leaders and the Mayor called on the government to remove the tougher restrictions introduced on July 31st earlier this week. This means from 26th August, the current Covid-19 restrictions will be eased in Wigan Borough and other parts of Greater Manchester following calls from leaders across the region. Local test centre open Our local testing centre on Chapel Lane car park is now open using a drive-thru system. Access is by car only.
From a young age I have always been independent, ambitious and determined to run my own clothing business. Due to the unforeseen circumstances of this year and an unexpected global pandemic I, like most, found myself with more time on my hands and decided it was the right moment to finally take the plunge and open my own business, so with that Reid’s Rails was born. I have always been interested in women’s fashion and discovering the latest trends and finding ways to accessories outfits in different ways. My clothing business provides not just clothing to all shapes and sizes, but also a particular focus on accessories, such as headbands, scarves and handbags, as well as footwear and also children’s ranges. I pride myself on the fact that my clothing is affordable and shows people you don’t need to pay high street prices to look good and feel good. You can find me on Facebook, Instagram and my new website is launching soon! Thank you
Art Competition Winners The winners of our Carry on Colouring and Carer Awareness logo competitions have been unveiled! Residents who stuck their artwork to their bin on collection days were in with a chance of winning a family trip to one of the North West’s top visitor attractions as part of the Carry on Colouring competition. And it was 9-year-old Henry Mcleod who scooped the top prize for his vibrant poster. Megan Crawford, 14, was also crowned the winner of the carer awareness competition, which asked residents to submit a logo that they think symbolises carers in the borough. Megan was awarded a Nintendo Switch for her fantastic design, which captures the different strands of what it means to be a carer. Well done to all who entered our competitions and a thank-you to our waste crews and carers for all of their hard work!
Further measures in place to support cyclists and walkers on Slag Lane Further improvements to Wigan Borough’s roads are underway to ensure pedestrians and cyclists are safe. On Slag Lane, road signs will be erected to ask motorists to give cyclists more room on the road. It is hoped this will help cyclists feel safer riding on the road rather than mounting the pavements, which then puts pedestrians at risk.

ALL on Board for Golborne Train Station The long-awaited TfGM report into the potential to reopen Golborne Train Station has now been completed and we are delighted to learn the report is very positive. Today we are meeting TfGM officers, the GM Mayor Andy Burnham and our MP James Grundy to consider the next steps.
www.facebook/locallivingonline
For getting us to this stage we would like to thank Jo Platt, Andy Burnham and James for their support for our campaign, to Andy and those key local people who have campaigned for many years past and to all those residents who came to our two public meetings to demonstrate their support for the station. Green Light for Golborne Station. Transport for Greater Manchester’s report on the potential to reopen local train stations has determined that Golborne Station has a very strong case and could be achieved without exorbitant funding. The GM Mayor has given his full support. The next stage is to draw up viable plans. Gena, Yvonne & Susan

Locals come together to raise money for two charities close to their hearts
A group of friends smashes their target of £1,000 for two charities. The challenge was to successfully climb (inc travel) the three biggest mountains in the United Kingdom within 24 hours. Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike & Snowdon Initially they planned to raise money for the Walton Centre as they do each year with the annual Love Leah bike ride. However, with the current COVID-19 pandemic, they wanted to support those who are risking their lives each and everyday. Therefore, all donations will be split between both The Walton Centre (Home from Home) and the NHS together. Clayton said ‘we all came together as a team and managed it in 22 hours and 30 minutes”. The group of friends (Clayton, Keiron, David, Danny, Marc, Joe and Craig) are local and wanted to do something challenging and worthwhile whilst supporting the charities. Clayton told us a bit more about the challenge “We came down snowdon in our love Leah and nhs tshirts on and random people where clapping us in and gave us a cheer, which was one of my favourite moments personally. We all camped out afterwards and celebrated with a few beers and a bbq.
Ben Nevis was probably the hardest part. Getting out of the van (driven by Charlotte and Chloe) in the rain and really dull cloud. Moral dropped slightly and it was hard to keep motivated. Altitude made breathing difficult at the top but we didn’t let that get the better of us and got up and down in 4 hours. Scafell was brilliant timing as we caught the sunrise coming round hollow stones onto the home straight. We all took a moment and just looked across the landscape. By the time we got to Snowdon we was all very excited and motivated. The weather was great, maybe a little too hot. We even got a couple of donations as we was climbing. We all felt our legs struggle in the latter part of the climb but again, adrenaline got us through and we smashed it out the park! On behalf of all the friends they wanted to say a big thank you for all your donations and support. On behalf of Local Living a huge well done to you all!!
