Something Bloomin Different opens its doors in Golborne In the former bookies on Heath Street in Golborne something blooming different is happening...
Opening it’s doors on Thursday 1st October it will have lots of beautiful local crafts, plants and gardening supplies and craft supplies. You can even have a cake and coffee in their tea room. It’s the brainchild of Mark Collier (lots of you will know him as the owner of The Bloomin Nursery. I’m sure you have read about Mark in previous issues where he told us all about restarting his gardening business after suffering from a brain haemorrhage. He is also the Chair of Golborne Carnival Committee and is currently in the process of reviving Golborne carnival. After running his plant stall every Saturday in Kane Square he had his eye on the shop and, after chatting it through with his Mum Lisa they decided to go for it. Lisa said “We would like to run weekly groups from knit and natter to baby sensory in the tea room area. There will even be a dog friendly Monday! We would like the space to be a community area and hope that there will be something for everyone”.
With Marks wife planning on working and his Mum Lisa and Sister volunteering there it will truly be a family business. Opening at 8:30 on Thursday 1st October Mark has asked his friend Billy Dyke to officially open the shop. Billy helped Mark on his market stall. The opening hours are Monday - Saturday 8:30 -5. The shop area will be opening on Thursday 1st and the tea room the following Monday. The tea room is based on bookings only at the moment due to government guidelines. Bookings will be taken from Thursday 1st for Dog friendly Monday, Friday feeling Friday and afternoon tea Saturday. Lisa explained ‘Our vision is to try and revive the high street and get everyone shopping locally. We already have some fantastic places in Golborne and we would love to enhance this. We need the communities help and support to do this. We hope you will all support us by popping in and having a look”. Margaret Vaudrey 100 Years The 21st of September 2020 was a very special Monday for Lowton resident Margaret Vaudrey who celebrated 100 years of living in the same row of houses. She was born and grew up at one end of the row and has lived at the other end for at least 75 years! On her 100th birthday Margaret enjoyed visits from family and friends, all timed and carefully managed to be socially distanced of course! She received her birthday card from HRH Queen Elizabeth and by the end of the day was surrounded by gifts, cards, flowers and balloons. It was an exhausting but a very exciting day for Margaret and all the family. Margaret was born on 21st Sept 1920 to parents Fred Taylor, a miner at Plank Lane colliery, and Ruth Bent, a tailoress. Ruth came from a large family of farmers who farmed land around the East Lancs Road between Lowton and Glazebury (or ‘Bury Lone’ as Margaret likes to call it). There are still farms run by members of the Bent family in the area but so far we have found no connection to the Bents of Bents Home and Garden! Margaret left Lowton-St-Mary’s School at 14 and began work at Courtauld’s Mill in Leigh. Her father did not want her to work in a factory so he used his influence with Mr Talbot, the ‘Boss’ at Courtaulds to secure Margaret a job there. She enjoyed her time there with her fellow workers, playing tennis on the old courts near Courtaulds Mill and attending dances at Lowton-St-Mary’s school hall. Unfortunately during the war years she was sent to work at the munitions factory at Risley, work which she hated. She would have loved to have joined the forces to see The Flash frozen over in the Forties. From left to right in something of the world but was the photo are Harold Vaudrey, Margaret, husband John needed at home. Vaudrey, brother Geoff Taylor and Jack Wilcock.

In 1945, on the 17th Sept, Margaret a life long member of Lowton St Mary’s Church, married John Vaudrey, son of the headmaster of the Chapel School. Her father did not approve and said it would never last because she was only a miner’s daughter and John was from a different class! How wrong he was! John and Margaret were happily married for 66 years until John passed away in 2011. John had been in the RAF during the war training pilots. Margaret remembers him occasionally flying low over the Flash and his mother’s house in Lowton. The recent VE Day celebrations provided Margaret with an opportunity to wave her Union Jack and wear John’s RAF cap whilst regaling neighbours and friends with her favourite wartime tales. When Margaret and John moved into their marital home it cost all of £250. It had no electricity or a bathroom. For years they managed with an outside toilet and a tin bath that they kept hanging on the wall in the kitchen! Margaret has so many stories of her early life in Lowton, of wartime, of adventures on John’s motorbike and sidecar, skating on the Flash (“It doesn’t freeze like that these days. That shows how the climate has changed!”) and many more. She still has a twinkle in her eye when she talks of the people she knew and the things they got up to. She is an inspiration to others with her optimistic, positive and non-complaining attitude and, what’s more, she still has all her own teeth!!

Well there has been lots of doom and gloom this year and lots of things cancelled :( The children need to be able to look forward to things, Halloween included. OK, so it will be different but doesn't have to be less fun! I saw this on a page and thought our little village could do this also:
